I know how to tell a First Edition, first printing, but how do you know if it is a 2nd printing?

They're probably assuming that since the T39 was the first printing (39th week of the year), then the T45 was 6 weeks later, making it a 2nd printing. Just speculating...

YES>>>> The second highest bidder was shown as "private" and has bid on 9 items with 100% of them with this seller. Imagine that.
and if you look at the sellers history This same "private" bidder has been involved in bidding up all sorts of this sellers unrelated items......and was invloved in the auction where the seller got serious negative feedback. Clearly a SHILL

If anything, I’m surprised that he has the same User ID. I would think that if he opened a new account with a new ID, he might fly under the radar a little bit, but with the same ID he just makes it fairly obvious that he’s back in the business of selling fakes.

Both books are from the same seller and it shows the tray case in the background as if advertising it was a S/L and not a gift. Now he/she does have a limited for sale and maybe they were just too lazy to change the pic out but I would say too close to a misrepresentation of what is being sold buyers beware.

It looks to me as if both are gift editions. they just have one that is remarked and selling for a higher price. the gift edition without the remark is $95 the gift edition with remark $275. I read the descriptions and didnt even notice the case until you pointed it out!

That's a bit paranoid. From what I can see both are listed as "GE" one with a remarque by Chadbourne. I'm all for the "Faker's" out there being exposed, but this one seems legit. Plus, I could swear I have seen that remarque here in someone's collection so, I am inclined to call it "Good". They're not all "Scumbags" just most of them!!! LOL LOL

In no way was I intending to suggest that they were a "scumbag" just suggesting its misrepresenting what is being sold due to the pic. More falling under the questionable item category of this thread, as I did notice the gift edition in the written description.

Weathervane is the Seller that got me into Stephen King Collecting!!!

I've always read Stephen King and I was looking for a new book that was coming out or something like that on Ebay and realized there was a collectible market and bought some things from her after chatting with her on one of the auctions. She gave me MORE than I won in the auctions...really cool throw ins and even lowered her pricing on the stuff I did buy.

I've since collected a lot of stuff and even sold some of the things I got from her at good deals to people on this site. :) Ari_Racing filled up some major holes in his needed issues of the Castle Rock Newsletter series for a good price and I got many of those from Weathervane.

I can only speak for my experience but I can't think of a better seller in all of my Ebay years and I have 100% positive feedback from 1999 join date....OLD SCHOOL! hehe! :)

I rarely speak out against or for real people in online forums, but felt compelled to stick up for my interaction with Weathervane as she sparked my "fire" for collecting King.

I concur and must say I made most of my early purchases from Weathervane. A great seller, very honest and communicates very well. If you find the prices high it may be that its because the market has gone down a bit so maybe she’s just refusing to take a loss. I often price items at around my cost or small profit unless I have some dire need for money.

Have to agree with above sentiments about weathervane. I just purchased two first editions of 20th century ghosts (both signed) and they were at a very reasonable price - I negotiated with the make an offer option. She then sent a very nice email once things were ready to ship - very pleasant to work with.

She lives here in Arizona and just two towns away from me. I ordered a Barrister Bookcase from some place and they inadvertently sent me two. She was in the market for a new case and I contacted her and said if she can pick it up, she can have it!!!! So I met her and her husband, we had coffee and henceforth I unofficially got a "friend" discount from her!! However, she always made me dicker!!! LOL She actually maintains two collections as her daughter is a King collector as well and she is always looking out for her.

She also has a veritable menagerie at the house. Several Dogs, Cats, Chickens etc. which she invariably had to go and feed!!! Really good people!!!

Come to think of it, Since I have completed my US 1/1 collection, I haven't communicated with her in a while. I should rectify that!!!

Not a BS but does anyone know what is up with seeing "private listing - bidders' identities protected" on the bid histories in ebay?
I thought it might be something with the new look, but some of the auctions I am watching still have the m***m stuff as usual, but one I am watching only shows the above for bidding history. Just curious if anyone knows what is up with this.

I think an ebay seller can choose to have the auction "private" meaning the bidders identities are not disclosed. Not certain, but I think when feedback is left on one of these "private" auctions you cant see the original listing though you can read the feedback.
I also think - but again not certain - that a bidder can choose to be "private" and his ebay handle is not displayed.
Ive never used the "private" option as a buyer or seller but I think thats how it works.

Hi Surly! Been a while..
This seller has four signed King books he's selling and each one has a similar odd carbon paper like signature. What throws me is the Night Shift sig that's bleeding through, but it isnt bleeding through like a sharpie or gel pen ink would.
Im sure these are all copied somehow but curious to know how he did it.

Saw this one earlier in the week and meant to let David at Bett's know about it.

Unless your name is David, I would not think it is something you would want to display on your wall.

Someone I know got this pop-up book signed by King, (Obviously not this actual copy that Brennan has up) but what was funny was that King didn't know what to do with it, and refused to sign it at first as he didn't know where to sign. The next day, my friend gave him a sharpie and he reluctantly signed it, but I'd have to figure he hasn't signed too many copies of the pop-up edition.

More than you might think. King did a formal signing for the book in December 2004 at Book Marc in Bangor. My copy from that signing is done just like that one. He sat and signed copies all afternoon with a silver sharpie on the cover.

I also own one just like this. I found it on my trip to Bangor to buy the Explorer. I dropped into a store nearby where he did the signing and when speaking to the owner he recalled the event and remembered he had a copy in the back room he had gotten from the event. He sold it to me for about $50. Since then, I am never shy about speaking of S. King when traveling around Maine.

Legit or not I would not purchase anything from them either. As stated above...why support someone who is known to sell fakes even if they throw up a legit sig once and awhile....plus, and not that i know this has happened, but I would worry about a switcheroo !! as was also stated above..who knows what you may actually get in the mail !

I think it is a legit signature. I would question the seller as to whether or not the "First Edition" statement is present on the copyright page. She is right that the number line begins with "2" on first editions but they also have to have "First Edition" stated (otherwise it is a second printing).

FYI, when you post a link to a gallery image that is too large, the pic exceeds post parameters and doesn't show. Best way is to right click on image and copy image location, and post that URL using the Insert Image icon.

Here's my 2 cents worth:

The Stand: good example of a 1979 sig

The Wind through the Keyhole: typical crappy recent sig (i.e., genuine but ugly)

The Talisman: I take it this was signed in the last year or so? Same comment as TWTTK

It: horrible; I say no good

Gunslinger graphic novel: probably no good; hard to tell with that thick silver pen

Gunslinger 1 and Dark Tower: not sure, but I'd lean toward good

Need more info... Which ones did you get from SAME seller/store? Any of them? :) For some reason, I'm not feeling the Talisman and TWTK ones, but if signed in a super hurry for whatever reason ("please sign two more for me!" situation that flusters him) then they look close enough. Hard without knowing the "story" on how/where signed sometimes. :(

Edit: After reading about the "new" King signature, I looked around and I guess he is kinda sloppier now. Gonna be REALLY hard to tell fakes if they make any effort. sigh....

The only one I have any doubt about is the IT. I could maybe be convinced by the IT if I stared at it long enough. It's a Sharpie sig done crazy fast right on the dust jacket, like he was signing things as fast as possible, maybe while being ambushed by a crowd coming out of an appearance. The lead in to the 'p' and the loop on the 'h' in Stephen look fairly consistent with his handwriting.

ChristineB

It is getting harder to tell a fake from real these days with his cramped/hurried "I am signing 500 books in 2 hours" (if you do the math on this 500 in 120 minutes is just scary) sigs of late. Then add in all those people that mob him before/after events for a sig, and the fact that he is not as young as he used to be (my sig has gone to crap over the years, I see stuff I signed from when I was 20 and go "I signed that? can't have been me") and those people that will ask him for a sig in the bathroom and you have a recipe for crappy sigs big time. :(

Okay - this is king unrelated; but still along the lines of eBay BS and I was interested in your thoughts or if you have seen this before.
There was a seller I watched a few months back - that was selling some rare Gaiman signed items (seller: floodfund - from the Philippines) - had a bunch of items listed, and a signed print from Craig Thompson (of his blankets cover) - that was in the thousands - once that item closed...all of the other remaining auctions ended as well. So low and behold I do a search for Melinda and Gaiman - and it is the same seller, book, description that I saw a few months back (or it might have been weeks). I sent them a question as to this "fishiness" so I will see if they respond at all - but I was curious as to your thoughts.

Here was the url to one of the items that I copied (not sure if this link will work - sorry)

I believe the books are legit - just not the seller - they had the same items in previous auction that was pulled and now they reappeared, plus when asked questions this seller does not respond - so I think the whole thing is a sham

I am not as familiar with all of the scammers out on ebay - or easily picking them out - as it seems like many of you have a good eye (or know of stories from past dealings). So in cases where the price is too low for a signed first edition - the assumption is it is NOT legit. So if you went through with something like this you would then have the hassle of dealing with ebay protection to cover such a purchase?

cit, I'm most definitely not an expert on this. lol I can usually figure out if something is a forgery because I'm accustomed to seeing students fake their parent signatures. As far as my personal experience, I have seen one King signature in person (accidentally, thanks to Bill ;) ) and have never felt the need to purchase any. So I wouldn't be the best person to ask on this one... however, I do know that ebay protection is indeed a hassle and it is always best to consult the wise and kind DT members prior to snatching up such a deal. And if it is an issue of "I don't want to alert others people who might raise the bid" then it's a risky bet you just have to take on your own. Of course, for the most part, the community seems to respect each other enough not to "fight" over a find like that.

The one time I asked about a possibly too-good-to-be-true ebay find, I actually got a PM from a member offering me an even better deal!! ;)

I imagine they went out of business trying to sell books with sigs like that - here was the description for that one:

This book was purchased at a used book store in Sarasota, FL that went out of business a few years ago.

I am not sure if the autographs of Stephen King and Michael Whelan are authentic or not, thus I am NOT SELLING this as an autographed book, but I am including a picture of what the signatures inside of the book look like so you exactly what you are getting.

The book is valuable because according to the description it is "expurgated"

Reported. How many would it take for eBay to take it down?

I don't know what, but I feel that as a community there must be SOMETHING real we can do about chronic offenders that might make them take notice (as opposed to just reporting to ebay).
Isn't forgery is a federal offence in the US or are there different degrees of the crime? Either way, it is a crime. Not only is it straight up stealing from inexperienced collectors (which is frustrating enough) but it harms long term futures. I read somewhere once that there are so many Confederate fakes of Civil War items flooding the market that even experienced collectors are just too gun-shy to purchase anything.

When you look at the number of fakes on ebay on any given day, it just seems that we could be on a path where a similar thing could happen to King collecting (if it hasn't already).

These sellers will likely never go away. Brennan was reported by several members here a month or so ago, and then all of his listings disappeared. Well, obviously he's back again. As much as I'd like to see him gone for good, I have serious doubts as to whether that's going to happen.

Well...one thing we could do is have people on here list stephen king items IDENTICAL to his but maybe slightly less in price. What this will do is bring those potential buyers that he is duping to "check out YOUR auction" as well...(because it's cheaper and stuff). And in your description you "slander" brennan" and pretty much tell potential SK buyers that all his shit is fake...and also redirect them to our website here....OR!...just link the "questionable items, fakes and questionable sellers.

What do you guys think???

G

We gotta hit this guy where it hurts!

SHIT...we can just make multiple ebay accounts and BUY all his shit but never pay...then just tell ebay that you DID pay...and just tie up all his items and Final auction value refunds for weeks///months!!!

I appreciate your "good intentions" and zeal, but wouldn't that be resorting to similar tactics, albeit with good intentions? I say we just keep reporting him and of course, bashing him here. It may have more affect than you think. Look at the site "online" numbers from the last two King releases!!! We are growing as a trusted resource!!! If someone with all the facts, and can identify the differences they can send an email to Baltimore@ic.fbi.gov to get the ball rolling to see what can happen. I say contact the Baltimore branch based on the fact the seller (Allstarbooks) from what I see is from Cumberland, Maryland.

Yeah it sucks to see scumbags like Brennan, but there's only so much we can do. If we keep posting his garbage and a number of us here report his items when they go back up, that may keep his "damage" and profit to a minimum.
I think I'm actually going to call ebay and voice my concern over this. Reporting single items are one thing but there's no Report option that involves repeat offenders and obviously intentional fraud, and maybe talking to a person about it will have more weight.

My only question is who the hell forges on an index card. If I were going to do a forgery I'd do it on what the person was famous for ...book, art, record, whatever. It's not like people are gonna shell out thousands or hundreds even for an index card.

When I looked at this auction yesterday the first thing that popped in my mind was a baseball card show I attended in the 80's, and there was a class on spotting fake signatures. They had photos of this workshop that had signatures in-between glass with like 6 lights under it, and all they did was fake index cards. The reason was for the index cards back then, and really even now is for framing purposes. The newer addition is having the index cards sent out for authentication, and grading. This kind of card would of been what they would of included in the frame with the Real Stephen King Roof Shingles.

Well now, hold on!!! I'm not defending this guy or anything, but a good 1/1 of this book goes for around $1,200 to $1,400, right? Admitted this is not a F/F copy in the least, but the price is somewhat fair if maybe $50 too expensive, no? Doesn't seem like the seller has stellar Photog skills. but the price, if negotiable seems fair for a "Poor man's copy". Just my 2 cents

Edit: Plus, copies of 1/1 of this title are becoming more and more difficult to find, no?

If it pleases you, then spend $300+.
You will forever (until you spend more), be looking for a replacement.
Original crappy purchase:
$300+
Better copy: $400+
Best copy: $900+
Now you have spent $1,600+, go sell the POS copies....good luck.

Besides reporting Brennan on eBay, has anyone ever sent him an email asking how he got those signatures? I'm curious what his response would be.

Brennan's response to my message:

Dear welcometolud,

i buy and sell tons of books. I have collectors that get items signed for me at events (local to new england and not local). I buy from many book stores and super collectors across the world.. you think this is the only place i buy items for my collection? anyways thanks for viewing my items, I have removed this item since you dont think its authentic and will be getting a refund from the guy i had it signed for me.
PS: please dont bid on my items if you have those concerns. thanks again

- brennan2984

It's bullshit but he did realize that we're not stupid. I told him that photo is in his feedback unsigned, I also mentioned that Night Shift paperback and basically said "we're on to you." He knows I wasn't bluffing so he took it down. He left the books up and frankly, the whole process can be tedious. If someone else wants to point out he has fakes, he might take them down.
