View Full Version : Contest #1: The Tick-Tock Man

As promised, here's the first Towerpedia! Art Contest. Below is King's description of the Tick-Tock Man to get you started, but where you go from there is up to you!

Sitting in the center of the room, with one massive leg thrown casually
over the arm of a chair big enough to be a throne, was a man who
looked like a cross between a Viking warrior and a giant from a child's
fairy-tale. His heavily muscled upper body was naked except for a silver
band around one bicep, a knife-scabbard looped over one shoulder, and
a strange charm about his neck. His lower body was clad in soft, tight fitting
leather breeches which were tucked into high boots. He wore a
yellow scarf tied around one of these. His hair, a dirty gray-blonde, cascaded almost
to the middle of his broad back; his eyes were as green
and curious as the eyes of a tomcat who is old enough to be wise but
not old enough to have lost that refined sense of cruelty which passes
for fun in feline circles. Hung by its strap from the back of the chair
was what looked like a very old machine-gun.
Jake looked more closely at the ornament on the Viking's chest and
saw that it was a coffin-shaped glass box hung on a silver chain. Inside
it, a tiny gold clock-face marked the time at five minutes past three.

Artwork should be posted in this thread. The contest will remain open until November 12, 2007. If you need more time, PM or email me at daghain@thedarktower.org and I will extend it two more weeks.

Please read the posting guidelines before submitting artwork and have fun!

Yep, I wish I could draw even a stick man

(I can, but its bad--smile is never right, goes off the face)

Our artists here should really give this a try, its fun and you will become a part of the best Dark Tower wiki in the internet.

If I'm the only one who contributes, do I get to win even if my drawring is shite? (Kidding, I'm ineligible anyways...)

11-02-2007, 11:37 AM
Are you going to do one, Mikey?

Mike Beck
11-02-2007, 11:59 AM
yes! i started working on one at work. it's been awhile since i've done any drawing. but i just bought a new sketch book and stole some pencils from work. i'll post one soon, Dag. :)

Hannah, for me you are the absolute winner.

Daghain
11-02-2007, 03:31 PM
Letti, are you going to draw us something?

Letti
11-02-2007, 03:33 PM
Let me think of it... for some years. :)
I will think of it.

alinda
11-03-2007, 12:14 PM
Oh please Letti, wont you?
You draw quite nicely.

Letti
11-03-2007, 12:45 PM
Oh please Letti, wont you?
You draw quite nicely.

Ufff... I will try to pretend that I believe you, okay? :huglove:
I might give it a try but I don't know. I know I will sound... romantic or pathetic or I don't know what but whenever I draw it comes from my heart. That's I dare to grab the pencil and draw because from that moment that I know I must draw it because it's in me I don't give a damn if it becomes good or bad - I must draw it.
Tick-Tock man... he is not my favourite at all. Yeah, he was a quite interesting big strong guy but that's all for me.
So even if I can draw I am not sure at all I can draw him.
Does it make any sense?

alinda
11-03-2007, 12:54 PM
Yes, my friend...like the little flower in that letter you wrote me.:huglove:

I was all set to post mine last night...borrowed my Dad's scanner and everything...but I think I've broken it :o

It won't switch on or anything. My web cam is broken too so i can't use that...I'm going to see if I can borrow my neighbours scanner when she gets home from work - other than that I've taken some pics on my regular camera which I can have put on cd to upload when I get the film developed.

Mike Beck
11-06-2007, 07:20 AM
i'll join ya here, Hanners.

Lisa, if you can't get yours up by the deadline, let me know and I can extend it.

Mike Beck
11-06-2007, 10:06 AM

Erin

Lisa, if you can't get yours up by the deadline, let me know and I can extend it.

Cheers! My neighbour scanned it, but his pc won't let him email it to me. I felt a bit cheeky asking him to scan it in the first place so I didn't want to be all like "Ok, upload it to this site for me!" :D Anyway, my other neighbour who I know very well will be home soon, so I'll try her next :P

Mike - that is fucking brilliant! Maybe all this trouble I'm having is an omen...a "don't bother Lisa!" type omen

Grillslinger
11-06-2007, 11:55 AM
Mike....that looks fantastic! Great job!

Daghain
11-06-2007, 11:59 AM
Hey Grillslinger, are you going to take a shot at this one?

Mike Beck
11-06-2007, 12:11 PM
thanks erin. :)

Hey! don't you say that, missy. you better post yours, or i'll hit the next customer that comes in. i'll hit them right in the groin. with a cordless phone.

and thanks for your kind words. ;)

Thanks Grill! Yeah, you definitely need to put one in!

Darkthoughts
11-06-2007, 12:53 PM
As much as I want to see one of your customers get hit in the groin with a cordless phone, karma tells me to desist and post my pic :D

Ok, I had to go round my other neighbour's house, get her to scan it, put it on a disc because she isn't online, then burn the disc to my pictures...phew...

Nice, Lisa! :D

Kevin
11-06-2007, 01:02 PM
Wow, All three are awesome in their own way. I like Tick Tock's posture and facial expressions in Lisa's pic. He's sitting like such a man, with his legs splayed to each side like that.

Mike's is pretty ace too. He looks very...sinister. For some reason he reminds me of an evil Crocodile Dundee though.

Hannah's is classic, I love it.

I really dont know which one I'll pick when it comes downto the wire.

Mike Beck
11-06-2007, 01:02 PM
that's fukkin awesome! i can't believe you were thinking about not posting it. and to be honest, this is one of those days where i wouldn't mind taking out someone's groin with the cordless. ;)

he looks like a real mean prick, doesn't he? :D

Darkthoughts
11-06-2007, 01:13 PM
Cheers you guys, cheers Mikester ;) I loved when you wrote
i got lazy with the background because i thought - Cool!! I was so lazy i didn't even do one

Hannah
11-06-2007, 01:15 PM
Those are both damn awesome.

I love the abs in both of those, too. And they're both kinda sexy. Rawr.

And Mike, he does look a little like he peed his pants ... but that just adds to the awesomeness of it. Peepee pants Tick Tock Man. :D

Mike Beck
11-06-2007, 01:23 PM
yeah...it was from a....lost chapter of Wastelands that King ended up scrapping. it talked all about Tick Tock's childhood and how he used to pee his pants when he was young. but all the kids made fun of him and that ended up shaping him into the dirty harrier that he is when Roland and the gang cross his path.

:D

Jimmy
11-06-2007, 01:28 PM
The yellow bandana is obviously a reflection of that.

Mike Beck
11-06-2007, 01:30 PM
 holy shit! good call.

Darkthoughts
11-06-2007, 01:32 PM

Mike - how did you colour your picture? Is it like a mixture of pencil and...colouring it on the pc? I don't have a clue about graphics but I'd really like to get into it.

Jimmy
11-06-2007, 01:32 PM
I work with what's given to me. :D

Hannah
11-06-2007, 01:35 PM

I always knew he had some horrible childhood trauma that made him the way he was. It's sad what a little pee in the pants can do to a child.

Mike Beck
11-06-2007, 01:35 PM
you did good, Jimmy.

DT, I penciled that bastard out first, then scanned it in, took it into Photoshop, and did all my coloring from there. but i think i was happier with the pencil sketch. it is fun to color it on the cpu, though. you can easily change stuff, which i like very much.

Mike Beck
11-06-2007, 01:37 PM
yep, Hanners. Every night at 3:05 am he'd wake up with piss all over himself, and his mother, much to her shame, had to clean his sheets and reprimand him.

he wears the clock in remembrance...

this is making more and more sense. :(

Hannah
11-07-2007, 09:16 AM
The one who peed his pants like 188 times?

Matt

zomg, the pantswetting talk is killing me.

mikestache, your drawing is totally awesome...like everything you do.

lisa...i had no idea you had drawing talent, too. i love you more every day.

my wifey still gets my vote, though. that's nepotism at work for ya! :D

Grillslinger
11-07-2007, 04:56 PM

Erin
11-07-2007, 04:58 PM
I'd love to see a version from you Grillslinger. But if you can't make it, Daghain is going to be doing other contests for other characters too in the future. :D

Daghain
11-07-2007, 06:27 PM
Grill, if you want to do it, PM or email me, and I can extend the deadline 2 weeks. Otherwise, the contest ends Monday 11/12.

Not sure if I prefer the lighter, or the darker version.
Full disclosure-I did not draw these as I have no artistic talent.

I like the lighter one. Whose are they?

Grillslinger
11-09-2007, 02:18 PM

Daghain

Randall Flagg

Wow! Who did? Do they mind if we use them potentially?

I went out and was soliciting artists-not an easy task I must say to commission a drawing-most of the people I met either flaked or wanted far too much money. This guy did the drawings for free. If you look at the characters face, he really doesn't look as "Viking" as he looks Indian. The artist is from India. He felt the drawing wasn't very good and gave it to me.
I e-mailed him for a link to his webpage to see other art.

Daghain
11-09-2007, 02:44 PM
Well, Jerome, if you can get him to sign up as a member he can enter it in the contest. :D

Randall Flagg
11-09-2007, 03:11 PM
Since the artwork was given to me, and posted by me; I have entered.
I do not however wish to be considered for any prize-I only want the best picture possible. If the decision is made to use the picture I submitted, any prize should go to someone else who submitted a piece they themselves drew.

Patrick
11-09-2007, 03:21 PM
Cool drawing, RF. I like the lighter one better.

boehmke
11-10-2007, 04:37 AM
Hey everyone here is my submission. I've worked on this on and off all week. I wasn't planning on finishing it tonight...but my car died (again) and no one I knew was home that was in driving distance to take me to some sort of food source so I guess I decided to paint.

That is terrific Boemke, I am so glad you did something for it.

This is going to be a hard choice. :orely:

Daghain
11-10-2007, 11:51 AM
I think it has to be member artwork to qualify, Jerome. :D

We could still use it on the site, but it technically couldn't be entered in the contest, IMHO.

Boehmke, that's awesome!

It's like they crossbred Ten Nungent with David Lee Roth, then grafted the hybrid onto some Norse God.

Great job, people!

All of them are awesome portraits.

Thanks everyone for the kind words. :)

I do think my jeep did it on purpose. The next morning I went to take my car battery to where I bought it...to see if it had gone bad in 2 weeks. I figured they'd give me a new one and everything would be good. Turns out the battery was fine...so all sorts of mechanical crap went floating through my head...alternator is bad...distributor is bad....OMG money out of my pocket bad. So I get home and figure I should at least put the battery back in the car so I don't get charged labor for someone else putting it in later whenever I get it fixed. I finish that...and for the hell of it I go to try to start my jeep. AND IF F'ing STARTS! It's run fine all weekend. So I figure my jeep..who I will now call Christine...wanted me to stay at home and paint and not get late night coffee and tacos. You may all thank Christine.

Hannah...what in the world is your avatar?

It's Bear Grylls, from Man Vs. Wild. I have a hot crush on him right now.

And Dave, what really happened was that I told your Jeep to break down because I wanted you to paint. Me and your Jeep have a pretty good relationship. I gossip with him about you and your new electronics (he totally hates your new HD DVD player - he thinks she's a bitch), and he breaks down on you when I tell him to.
