I have quite a bit of Bradbury books, and will be adding them as time permits, but we'll start slow with just a of couple pictures.

btw, I always say Bradbury and King are my two favorite living authors, so I'm a big fan.

Fahrenheit 451 - The Limited Editions Club 1982

This one is unique in the fact that the spine and the boards of the book are bound in aluminum. This is my only metal book. I have multiple metal traycases for some of the books I own, but this is the only book bound in metal.

Here a the Fahrenheit 451 50th Anniversary Edition (one of a few 50th anniversary books) by Graham Press. Published in 2005.

This one is cool because it does not have the same Mugnaini images that adore most editions of Fahrenheit 451, the artist here is Ralph Steadman.

Here is one of many incarnations of the old edition of Fahrenheit 451 published by Easton Press. There is a signed copy, many red cover incarnations and a black cover signed by Bradbury. All of them are essentially the same book with the same Joe Mugnaini illustrations inside.

http://i351.photobucket.com/albums/q475/gguthrie_album/fahrenheit451col_img.gif

This is the 2011 Slipcased Limited from Easton Press. It's the best edition by Easton so far. It again has the same Joe Mugnaini illustrations but it also adds about 8 new illustrations by Adrian Chesterman. Plus it's signed and numbered.

Geoff, I love all your Bradbury editions, especially all the F451 limited editions. I look forward to seeing more of your Bradbury collection (and everyone else's as well, of course).

It ain't much, but here's what I've got (quotes are from my Collection thread):

I have always loved Ray Bradbury. Here is an S/L (one of many versions) of one of my favorite books. Yet another opportunity I learned about from another SK collector.

A signed 1st/1st of FROM THE DUST RETURNED by Ray Bradbury.

I don't know anything about the story, but I love the author and the price was right.

lol, sadly I own too many copies of Fahrenheit 451.

Here is an interesting item. It's a Triptych of three images from the Martian Chronicles that Hill House was doing before it folded and Subterranean Press took over. I really love the artwork. It's framed and signed by both Bradbury and the artist Edward Miller.

Thanks for posting these. One of the first field trips we did in my art classes in college was visit a book binder. It was a really cool small garage like structure filled with books and machinery. I thought it was so cool, but the project the artist/binder was finishing was a cover or slip case for Martian Chronicles that had a cool rocket ship or blinds of a rocket ship on the cover/case. I have no idea if someone commissioned that or if it was an actual edition. I remember thinking that was something I could do, then came computers.
Thanks for spurring this memory, I'm going to look up if that was an edition now.

Today was the release day for Shadow Show: All-New Stories in Celebration of Ray Bradbury, which includes a brand-new Robert McCammon story, "Children of the Bedtime Machine", plus stories from Bradbury, Ellison, Gaiman, Hill, and many others.

In the crappy photo below, you can see the ARCs for the HarperCollins trade paperback and Gauntlet Press editions, the final HarperCollins book, and the trade paperback edition of Illustrated Masques, which features a graphic adaptation of Robert McCammon's "Nightcrawlers".

Yes, three of those books are encased in plastic....

And here is the Book-of-the-Month Club hardcover edition:

I can't tell you how jealous I am of seeing all these books. It's great to actually see other collectors because we tend to be a secretive, reclusive bunch. I've been a book collector for several years now, at first amassing a random collection of books, then young adult novels, but I'm just now beginning to fiercely collect Bradbury. I'm going after the first editions of everything he's ever written (including all the short stories!). I know this is a daunting task, and will take me many years to complete (if ever such a thing happens. haha), but I feel the need to do this! I've already managed to get my hands on a couple of the Galaxy magazines where 'The Fireman" (precursor to Fahrenheit 451) was published as well as a first edition/printing of the Ballantine pb edition of 451 and a couple of other signed books and first editions. I will post pictures if anyone is interested in seeing.

I've only got a couple so far, but I think I'm off to a good start.
Here I have the true first edition, first printing of Fahrenheit 451: The 1953 paperback edition, which was published a couple of weeks before the hardcover edition.
I also have two copies of Galaxy February 1951, in which "The Fireman", precursor to Fahrenheit 451, appears.
Also pictured is a signed first edition of Bradbury Speaks, as well as a signed arc for "Quicker than the Eye". I also have a signed paperback edition of 451 and a copy of Weird Tales, which contains The Interim, but it's in pretty bad shape.
I am actively seeking to acquire more Bradbury works - signed and unsigned. I'm looking for the very first editions of everything, specifically when his short stories were published in magazines. If you're looking to get rid of them...... haha But why would anyone want to get rid of Bradbury. I just can't express how much I love his works, but I'm sure you all have a pretty good idea of how I feel.

Perhaps you guys can help me while we wait on the moderator to approve my posts. I was reading The Martian Chronicles, and on the back of it, it mentioned that Bradbury was one of the few writers whose fiction had appeared in Life magazine. Do you know what story that was? I've looked all over the internet, but I can't find any reference to it.

I think it might have been a non-fiction piece. Bradbury went to Houston Texas in January of 1967 to do an article about the Apollo program for Life magazine-possibly "An Impatient Gulliver Above Our Roofs," Life, November 24, 1967. Article.

http://bks7.books.google.com/books?id=TkEEAAAAMBAJ&printsec=frontcover&img=1&zoom=1&edge=curl&sig=ACfU3U01yk06z6qQxDFeilrMM3h68ILtLA (http://bks7.books.google.com/books?id=TkEEAAAAMBAJ&printsec=frontcover&img=1&zoom=1&edge=curl&sig=ACfU3U01yk06z6qQxDFeilrMM3h68ILtLA)In 1960, Ray Bradbury wrote an article for Life magazine on the then new science of SETI, the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence. Life's archive is available on Google Books, so you can read the entire article for free here (http://books.google.com/books?id=TkEEAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA116#v=onepage&q&f=false).

Seven years later, another Bradbury article for Life won him an award from the Aviation Space Writers Association. The article "An Impatient Gulliver Above Our Roofs" details Bradbury's impressions of his first visit to the Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston, Texas, and of the Saturn/Apollo Moon program. The full article, with some beautiful illustrations is here (http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=eEkEAAAAMBAJ&lpg=PP1&pg=PA31#v=onepage&q&f=false).

So, he published a short story called "The Kilimanjaro Machine" in the Jan. 22, 1965 issue of Life. It was apparently a tribute to Hemingway after his death. He also published several other articles about space. These appeared in the following issues:
Aug. 2, 1968
July 1991
Sept. 14, 1962
November 24, 1967
And a letter to the editor in the Feb. 24, 1967 issue.

That's really cool, because when I get that special S/L in with all of the author's signatures, the one signature missing in there is Bradbury's ... so this will make a great pair on the shelf!

Bradbury is my 2nd favourite collectible author after King. I've been collecting for a few years on him. It's a lot easier for me as Bradbury was living locally to me (actually his house was 15 minutes drive from mine) and I would attend book festivals and signings easily. I have 43 Bradbury signed books. All hardcovers. Some S/L. Most purchased at cover price before he passed. One of them was even a gift from a fellow member here.

I will own my first letered Bradbury S/L. Purchased one from Gauntlet yesterday.

According to Gaunlet Press:
We have a small number of signed copies of Ray Bradbury’s THE DRAGON WHO ATE HIS TAIL which we are selling for $100. Those who purchased MATCH TO FLAME (published in 2007) received a free UNSIGNED copy of this perfect bound chapbook. We recently found a few signed copies of the chapbook while searching one of our warehouses for another title.

To purchase the chapbook go to the MATCH TO FLAME webpage (http://cts.vresp.com/c/?GauntletPress/4193304b2a/584f672cea/93cba77a11/ACTION=template&thispage=MatchToFlameBk&ORDER_ID=217683095) and scroll down to the very bottom. Order the unsigned chapbook. In the Comment’s section mention “$100 Signed Copy,” These signed chapbooks will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Sorry, no Paypal orders. As always ignore the notice automatically generated by our server. It will not contain the correct price. Publisher Barry Hoffman will send an official confirmation.

Oh, sure. I don't plan on buying or offering for any of them. It's just there's something about window shopping. For example, I see a genuine first edition The Cat in the Hat or Make Way for Ducklings or The Hobbit or Lord of the Flies, etc. and I think about what it must have been like if you were a kid and got one of these for Christmas before anyone knew it would be anything special. How many attics or boxes of kids stuff might have a first edition Seuss?

Saturday is the annual antiquarian book fair here in the DC area. I've been before and had a great time looking at the sci-fi first editions. If I had unlimited funds, I would try to collect golden age sci-fi. That's actually my true love (rather than horror). Asimov and Bradbury and Heinlein and van Vogt and Poul Anderson and Fredric Brown, etc.

If I win the lottery I'll offer to buy bookbid's entire inventory. And keep it all to myself!

Slowly going through Shadow Show and I was amazed that Dan Chaon basically blew RB off after writing back and forth. It's amazing how RB took the time to write to him and this dude was like "Yo, I'm staying in school" and then never wrote back. So sad.
His story was great. I wanted to check out his other stuff but it seems very depressing from the reviews I've read.

Does anyone have the Illustrated Life of Ray Bradbury? I can;'t quiete figure out what kind of book it is. Is it an artbook or like a photo book with some artwork collaged in?

RC65
04-18-2013, 06:23 AM
I thought Chaon's story was one of the better ones as well, and have put one of his collections on my Amazon Wish List...might even pick it up one of these days. There were several standouts in SHADOW SHOW that introduced to me some (to me) new writers.

I have the ILLUSTRATED LIFE book. It's not really either an artbook or photobook, per se -- the focus is on Bradbuy's life and development as a writer, but is liberally illustrated throughout.

Those ILLUSTRATED LIFE editions look like DMG used the same material as the cases for LSOE. They're beautiful.

Here's my review of "Bradbury: An Illustrated Life" (the review is for the Grant editions, not the actual content of the book, which I haven't read yet).

Short review: As I explained elsehwere, I came into a sum of money via fairly absurd means (I self-published a couple math books for babies, and I have sold several hundred copies in the last couple of months) and I decided I wanted to blow the money on something equally absurd. I decided that these two books (with a total list price of $1300; I was able to negotiate a bit of a discount with Robert Wiener) fit the bill perfectly. As a collector of Grant books, I am very happy with what I got. The books are beautiful. It's a bit annoying that the traycases are both too tall and too deep to fit on my bookshelf, but it's not that big a deal.

Long review: These books are outrageously expensive for what they are. The page block primarily comprises the William Morrow traded edition, with a small set of pages at the beginning added for the Grant edition. But, I'm more interested in the beauty of the books than anything else. As Patrick said, they are bound in the same material as Grant used for LSOE and TWTTK, but different colors. Also, if you thought LSOE was a big book, then get a load of this:

http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag74/Robert_Fulman/DV300F/aa_zps43eed0b7.jpg

The Lettered (26 copies) is bound in red, and the Numbered (350 copies) is bound in blue. I was disappointed, given the price difference, that that is the only difference between the two editions. Even the signature pages are exactly the same, and don't even mention that there are two distinct editions (or how many copies are in each):

http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag74/Robert_Fulman/DV300F/aa_zps0d6131b3.jpg

The book itself wasn't actually written by Ray Bradbury. It's a biography by Jerry Weist, with an introduction by Ray Bradbury. However, in the Grant edition, there is an added section at the beginning which is a film treatment with storyboards. I'm sure the storyboards were done in B&W, but it would have been nice to include a splach of color on these pages:

http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag74/Robert_Fulman/DV300F/aa_zps485e27bc.jpg

If you just want to read the book, you can buy the trade edition on Amazon . As I said above, it is literally the same exact set of pages. The Grant edtion copyright page above only addressed the extra contents in that edition, because the WM copyright page is included in the Grant edition as well, after the added materials.

The verdict: If someone hands you a bunch of money and says, "You have to buy something that is equally awesome and stupid" then you should get the Lettered edition of this book. If you love Ray Bradbury and beautiful books, then buy the numbered edition; other than the color, it's the same as the numbered edition and costs $700 less. If you just love Ray Bradbury, then skip the Grant edition and find a copy of the trade edition.

I want to explicitly state that I am not complaining about the book at all. I'm glad they are mine. I was unable to find any info about these books at all online, so I hope this post will be useful (and yes, I am aware that this book was published almost ten years ago). If my book sales keep up for another couple months, I am thinking about purchasing a hand-bound copy of Phil Hale's Goad, so I have no problem at all with Grant or the quality of the books they produce.

Bradbury: An Illustrated Life can be purchased directly from Grant: https://secure.grantbooks.com/z-titles-bradbury.html

"Ghosts of Forever" will be reproduced in color in Wilderness. The binding will probably pale in comparison to the Grant bindings of Illustrate Life, though. :) I've seen both of those in person and they are absolutely gorgeous books.

IDW Publishing Presents The Greatest Shadow Show on Earth With A Comic Book Adaption
Literary Mavens And Acclaimed Comic Book Artists Come Together In Celebration Of Ray Bradbury

San Diego, CA (July 26, 2014) – In the prose anthology Shadow Show, acclaimed writers gathered to pay tribute to the work of the incomparable Ray Bradbury, known for such timeless classics as Fahrenheit 451, The Martian Chronicles, and The Illustrated Man. What resulted was a collection of remarkable and unique stories that beautifully illustrate Bradbury’s enduring imprint on the fantasy, science fiction, and mystery genres.

This November, IDW Publishing will take a selection of these stories and pair them with some of comic book’s biggest and brightest artists for a 5-issue series of comic-book adaptations. Shadow Show #1 starts with the haunting and melancholy “By The Silver Water of Lake Champlain,” written by Joe Hill (Locke & Key) and adapted by Jason Ciaramella (The Cape) with art by Charles Paul Wilson III (Wraith) and a gorgeous cover by Locke & Key co-creator Gabriel Rodriquez.

“The pairing of Bradbury-inspired stories written by some of the best prose writers working today made for an amazing tribute book,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief, “and to see them brought to life by such amazing artistic talents not only helps further Bradbury’s legacy, but it’s making for some damned good comics, too.”

"The anthology Shadow Show is a loving homage to Mr. B, so it's great to see some of these stories in comics format. Ray considered comic strips central to his education and inspiration and Bradbury stories adapted for the classic EC stories helped raise the bar for all the comics that followed," said Sam Weller and Mort Castle agreed.

Issue 2 will see Neil Gaiman’s “The Man Who Forgot Ray Bradbury,” brought to life with artist Maria Fröhlich, and artist Eddie Campbell will tackle Audrey Niffenegger’s “Backward In Seville.” Writer/Editor Mort Castle and Bradbury biographer Sam Weller, who compiled the Shadow Show prose anthology, are onboard to help bring these stories to life in comic form.

Other Shadow Show stories to be included are Harlan Ellison’s “Weariness,” Dave Eggers’ “Who Knocks?” and Alice Hoffman’s “Conjure” with accompanying artists to be announced. Haunting paintings by Shane Pierce will grace all subscription variant covers for this series.

I absolutely loved Neil Gaiman's hommage to Ray Bradbury!

This is coming out next week:

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/81hI1EmDuHL.jpg

http://bradburymedia.blogspot.com/2013/11/exclusive-collected-stories-of-ray.html

Yes, it's a world exclusive: I can now reveal the contents of the second volume of The Collected Stories of Ray Bradbury: a Critical Edition, Volume 2: 1943-1944. The book is due for release from Kent State University Press in September 2014, and seems to already be available for pre-order from the publisher, here.

Attentive readers may have noticed that this second volume covers a much smaller time period than Volume 1, which spanned the period 1938-1943. This effectively reflects the accelerating pace of Bradbury's career as a professional writer, not necessarily writing more than previously, but getting more work published.

Without any further ado, here's the list of stories for Volume 2, courtesy of the book's editor, Jon Eller from the Center for Ray Bradbury Studies:

The Sea Shell
Everything Instead of Something (Doodad)*
The Ducker*
The Shape of Things (Tomorrow's Child)
The Night
Perchance to Dream (Asleep in Armageddon)
Referent
The Calculator (Jonah of the Jove Run)**
The Emissary
And Watch the Fountains**
The Million Year Picnic
The Man Upstairs
Reunion
Autopsy (Killer, Come Back to Me!)**
The Long Night
Lazarus Come Forth**
There Was an Old Woman
The Trunk Lady
Jack-in-the-Box
Where Everything Ends***
Bang! You're Dead!
Enter-the Douser (Half-Pint Homicide)
Rocket Skin**
Forgotten Man (It Burns Me Up!)
The Jar

* These stories have not previously been collected in a Bradbury book, although they have been reprinted in anthologies in addition to their original magazine publication.

** These stories have never been published in a book; their only previous appearances were in their first magazine publication.

*** Only previously available within a limited edition volume from Subterranean Press.

The Collected Stories series was initiated by Bill Touponce and Jon Eller, with Bill as General Editor and Jon as Textual Editor. Now that Bill has retired (but still working on independent projects such as his recent book on Lovecraft, Dunsany and Bradbury), Jon has taken on all the editorial duties himself, supported by a small team of editorial associates at Indiana University's Institute for American Thought, and a couple of consulting editors: Donn Albright and a certain Phil Nichols.

Since the aim of the Collected Stories series is to establish Bradbury's versions of the texts - rather than versions modified by a magazine editor - Bradbury's own preferred titles are being used here wherever there is primary or secondary evidence to support it. So, for example, "Doodad" has it's original title "Everything Instead of Something" restored.

It's not just the titles: Collected Stories aims to identify Bradbury's intentions for each text, and this means going back to the author's own manuscripts where possible. In this instance, Jon is using original Bradbury typescripts for three stories ("The Shape of Things", "The Man Upstairs", and "Where Everything Ends"), and original opening pages for nine others. Of these, Jon reports "We have first-page carbons that Ray appears to have saved as proof of date and authorship while stories circulated during the war years." Through this documentary research, the editorial team is able to not only retrieve otherwise forgotten story titles, but in some cases to also retain Bradbury's preferred spellings and compounds and reject the house-styled changes imposed by various pulp magazine editors.

Another aim of the series is to establish the chronology of composition, which previously was somewhat shrouded in mystery. There are at least two reasons for this. First, Bradbury's stories might circulate for a number of years before being chosen for publication by a magazine editor, and so we have a situation where a story might be written in 1943, but not be published until 1947. And second, most of us are familiar with the stories from their appearance in Bradbury's books, giving us the mistaken impression that stories published side-by-side are of a similar vintage - leading many a critic to draw invalid conclusions about Bradbury's authorship. The stories collected in Volume 2 span a compositional period from April 1943 to March 1944, one year of professional output.

For scholars, this volume will once again offer a new insight into Bradbury's developing professional authorship, and make plain his evolving ideas by showing those ideas in chronological order. For the general Bradbury reader, it will offer a chance to enjoy a number of previously rare and obscure tales. September 2014 is a long way off, but the wait will be worth it!

I was looking at a book on eBay, and I saw the below story re: The Cat's Pajamas S/L published by Hill House. Anyone know if it's true?!

"In 2004, Hill House, Publishers issued a signed limited edition of Ray Bradbury's short story collection: THE CAT'S PAJAMAS. This title was originally published by William Morrow in a trade edition. However, through an agreement with Ray Bradbury, the limited edition includes five additional stories that were not included in the trade edition. These five stories had not appeared in print at any point prior to the publication of the limited. This accounts for the fact that the full title of the limited edition is: THE CAT'S PAJAMAS: Stories + 5.

Shortly after this limited edition was published, Hill House went out of business. Therefore, we are able to offer 155 copies of this beautiful limited edition at an incredible price of $35.00. (Please note that we are forced to list only 100 copies per Ebay rules -- we do have 155 copies available.) The original published price of this edition was $200.00. This is the first time these books have been available at retail at a price below the original list price.

This book was published in a limitation of only 1,000 copies. Each book is signed by Ray Bradbury. Ray is sadly no longer with us, but his signature, done in a vibrant and broad red pen, is one of the last signatures he did."

Seems like a great deal! Camelot Books has it for $175 and AbeBooks seems to have copies in the hundreds of dollars.

Glad I could help, guys. But has anyone heard this story before???

you mean the story about hill house going out of business? In that case yes - but it was most likely related to their publishing of Anansi Boys from Neil gaiman - that was about the time that they went out of business - they even stopped numbering the copies of that book. There were issues in production - and their costs went through the roof and they folded.

"HH was one of the most notorious small presses on the planet. They created some of the most beautiful books to be found, but their production schedule was so erratic and chaotic that it became a minor miracle when they managed to actually get something out the door. Email inquiries were frequently ignored and sections of their website hadn't been updated in years. Anansi Boys is a prime example of a book that was Trouble (with a capital "T") ever since HH decided to have the printing done in Krakow, Poland in order to utilize real, not bonded, leather. Apparently, the whole experience was a royal PITA and HH vowed to never again outsource. Their next title, presumably The Martian Chronicles, was going to employ a U.S.-based printing house."

but thanks for the bradbury update - i will definitely be grabbing one of those copies

I bought Cat's Pajamas, as well as a Bradbury chapbook from Hill House before they went under.

They originally had a series of, I think, three Bradbury books planned. They went under while they were working on The Martian Chronicles, so another publisher had to take that one over. IIRC, only CP+5 and the chapbook were actually published by Hill House.

If he lists more on eBay, I would definitely grab another copy.

Just a shipping to Germany question - is it more efficient/less expensive to ship the copies to one person overseas - and then have that person ship to the UK/Germany/etc members? I know I recently shipped to Germany and the package was just over 4 lbs (that seems the magic cut off for rates) and just over that was $52 to Germany. Ups and fedex quoted over $100 for that size package. 2 of these would probably be a shade under 4 lbs depending upon packing material and box size.

There is also a new version of The Halloween Tree coming, with illustrations from Gris Grimley. There is a book and art launch on August 2nd and he thinks it will be available to buy (signed by Gris) online mid-august: http://www.madcreator.com/store/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=369

The launch is at 'Creature Features' in Burbank, California: https://www.facebook.com/events/1392629847731733/

I have his version of Frankenstein (plus a signed print to accompany it), which is fantastic. There he used the original Mary Shelley text from 1818, but added his own illustrations.
If you haven't seem him before, he is very Tim Burton like in his style and I suspect this will be a very nice edition to have (and for a very reasonable price, usually his stuff is all under $20!)
