This is the official thread for HBO's epic new series "Game of Thrones" based on the A Song of Ice and Fire novels by George R.R. Martin.

The show premiers this Sunday, April 17th at 9 PM/EST.

Much discussion about the series has taken place on this site in the "A Song of Ice and Fire" thread in the Mansion sub-forum located in the Keystone Rose. However, with the premier of the show quickly approaching, we wanted to start a separate thread so we don't spoil those who have not read the books, but are fans of the show.

Now...Winter is Coming in just 2 more days and I can't be more excited! :D Let the discussion begin!

I'm ready. I'll be watching Sunday night, maybe I'll have the chat open while I watch, if anyone wants to join and watch together.

I know HBO is going to be a lot more stringent on allowing downloads than a lot of other broadcast companies, but does anyone here know any good links for tv downloads? I haven't found a source yet, but I am dying to watch it as soon as possible

I've watched football games from wqork on justin.tv It's a site where people broadcast streams directly from their tv. At least it used to be, haven't used it in a while.

If I tell you guys I have an overwhelming urge to make some kind of lemon cake for tomorrow night, you'd understand, right?

Also, two old timers (Marty and Sen) won some kind of contest and got to see the first two episodes yesterday and participate in a Q&A session with Sean Bean. I admit I haven't read or listened yet but here is the link to the podcast. http://boxroomboy.com/boxroom-of-thrones

And I was really considering making some lemoncakes too! Thanks for posting the recipe in the other thread!

Indeed it was. I hope they show Jon and Rob being close in future episodes, as they were supposed to be. Of course, Rob didn't say a work during the whole episode, so maybe they just seemed distant because of that.

I was hoping to see the faces of the Old Gods on the trees when Ned and Catelyn were talking about Jon Arryn.

Those are both VERY minor issues, though. I loved every minute of it.

Daenerys is so, so, so, so HOT.

Bethany

Amazing the little things that distract you, isn't it? I loved it but all I could keep thinking was "there's only one sexual position?"

I need help, clearly. Please, let your intellectual dissection of the show continue.

Bethany
04-17-2011, 08:47 PM
That being said, I loved the opening credits and the ending. That was the perfect point to stop. Arya and Bran are spot on. I'm still not keen on Cersei and Dinklage is growing on me.

John Blaze
04-18-2011, 06:04 AM
I guess Lena Headey didn't want the described sex scene in the book, therefore her position. Khal Drogo was tender to Daeny in the book, didn't seem so much in the show. That bothered me a little. The hooker Tyrion was with in the beginning was hot, I guess they have good quality hookers in Winterfell.

Bethany
04-18-2011, 06:13 AM
I thought the same thing about Dany and Khal Drogo.

"Oooooh. Violence AND nudity. My kind of show."~~Annabeth

Emily
04-18-2011, 08:08 AM
Ditto about Dany and Drogo. I thought it was going in the right direction when he wiped away her tears, but that was where the tenderness ended, haha. I hope they show the sort of growing affection that happens between them in the books, I really loved that.

Also, I don't know if I've ever thought a child was more adorable than the actor who plays Bran. I want to squeeze him.

My only other gripe was I wished they showed a scene with all the Stark kids and their direwolves. I'm sure we'll see more of that in coming episodes (and obviously there's only so much they can fit into the first hour), but I was hoping to see Sansa, Arya, and Rickon meeting theirs.

Erin

I freaking loved it as well. Like Bethany mentioned...the ending was perfect. Things I loved:

- The fact that Jamie didn't look at Bran when he pushed him out the window.
- The first Viserys/Dany scene. I was totally surprised to see so much Dany nudity, but it really worked in establishing how creepy Viserys is. Plus, she's hot. Also, I love the little nod to what is probably going to be the last scene in the first season with Dany walking into the bath and being told it's too hot.
- Loved everything about Arya in it. "Where's the Imp?"
- OMG direwolf puppies. So cute! Can't wait to see them rip out some throats. Haha.
- Mark Addy is awesome as King Robert. I loved the scene in the crypts, it was really moving.

Things I didn't like so much:

- The Dany/Drogo sex scene. I, too, wanted to see the tenderness there, but from what I've read online, originally that scene was longer and it was cut short because they didn't want the episode being "too much like a porno". So hopefully we will see more of the Khal's sweet side in the next episode. But that's my only gripe and it's minor.

Overall I loved it and can't wait until next week! As for why they changed the Jamie/Cersei sex scene to doggie-style (the only sexual position in Westeros as Bethany put it.... ) I think it is because Lena Headey was 5 or 6 months pregnant when she filmed the first season and it may have been too obvious having her on her back or sitting up during a sex scene. In the rest of the episode, she's got bulky robes on or is sitting at a table, things where she can hide a pregnancy.

Bethany

I didn't know she was preggers, that would probably explain it.

I think Mark Addy and Sean Bean did a really good job playing the dynamic between Robert and Ned. I loved when Robert told Ned that he has gotten fat and Ned just raises his eyebrow at Robert. I also think Sean Bean does a really good job of playing Ned unsure of how to react to his best friend after so many years of him now being king.

I really enjoyed the first episode of Game of Thrones. I've never read the books, but a show like this is right up my alley. I will be interested to see if the show can continue to sustain such a high level of production values as well as the ability to weave so many different stories together.

you know what? I don't know what I would do if I could do it all over again, because the series isn't finished yet, but the show has begun, idk. I finally got around to watching the first episode last night. Loved it. Especially Dinklage as Tyrion. Jon Snow was well-cast. Jaime Lannister was nearly pitch-perfect (for my taste, anyway). I could see a family resemblance between Arya and her mother.

As someone who also hasn't read the books but has just checked out the first ep, this was my reaction, too. Very well made, drew me right in, and whilst i can't remember half the characters' names off the top of my head at the moment, the story seemed easy to follow, despite beginning with so many different threads. I loved how each setting was so distinct, so different, with Winterfell being very Medieval-ish but King's Landing shown to be much more advanced, more civilized, and having much better weather, too. I'm now looking forward to the next ep, i must admit, especially at how the first episode ended in such a brilliant way.

The crazy thing is that you haven't even met a third of the characters in the series yet, or probably even a eighth. haha. In the books at least, Martin does such a masterful job of weaving all of their stories together, though. The shows seems to be doing a good job of it so far as well.

John Blaze

lol, actually, in the books, Arya and Jon are supposed to be the only ones who look like their father, the rest of the family is supposed to have the "Tully" look.

Lena Headey was on Craig Ferguson promoting Game of Thrones last night and she is about 500 times more hot as herself than she is as Cersei. I am starting to think they just didn't properly capture her beauty on the show.

OchrisO
04-21-2011, 04:47 PM
Oh, here is the interview. It has a clip from the show as well that shows interaction between her and Joffrey.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k73ENcak1Y4

Erin
04-21-2011, 05:28 PM
I watched that earlier today and thought the same thing. Maybe she just can't pull off the blonde look?

OchrisO
04-21-2011, 06:02 PM
Maybe it is that she was pregnant in the early parts, which are the only scenes we have seen so far, so they put her in a bunch of loose, baggy clothes, as well as pregnancy often changing facial proportions and such. I'm not sure. She's quite beautiful, though, and has played a strong queenly type character in 300 before, not to mention the super bad ass Sarah Connor,so I hope she manages to win me over as Cersei as the show progresses.

I just noticed that in that interview they shortened the clip they showed on Craig Ferguson, they show a full conversation about the Starks in the actual intro to the interview.

LOVED last night's episode. The Tyrion slapping around Joffery scene was freaking perfect. Also, I noticed that the majority of this episode was pretty much directly from the books, minus the added Cersei/Cat/Bran scene.

Also, Sean Bean is just blowing me away as Ned.

I wasn't sure about Dinklage for the first .0067 seconds, and then I loved his casting. Ned of course IS Sean Bean, or rather, Sean Bean is NED. In fact, from now on, on other projects, they will put his name as Eddard Stark on the credits. :D

Joffery may very well be the best cast character. I just want to punch him whenever I see him.

alkanto
04-26-2011, 02:51 PM
My exact thoughts on Joffery. They picked the perfect kid to play him...let's only hope he's a great actor...
I am loving Tyrion more by the minute, however. He's my favorite character in the book, and I think he now holds that title in the series. Peter Dinklage has always been great, and he is just perfect for this role!
As far as the second episode is concerned it was quite good. I like seeing the wolves in a bigger role, even if the scene with Ned and Lady at the very end was the only part I refused to watch. I'm a huge dog person, and even the sound effects they used there almost made me tear up. That scene kills me every time I read the books. Between that and Nymeria being forced to run off....

Erin
04-26-2011, 04:26 PM
Oh yeah, Dinklage is doing great as Tyrion. I read a lot of complaints about his accent before the series aired, but he sounds great to me (granted I'm as far from an expert in British accents as you can get  )

This past episode, Lena Headey really grew on me as Cersei. That was one of my most major issues before the show started, but man she pulled off hateful bitch in this most recent episode.

alkanto
04-26-2011, 04:32 PM
As far as Dinklage's accent is concerned, I'm hardly qualified (just a bunch of experience watching British shows and talking to British friends....) but he does alright. A few times, in this episode particularly, he doesn't slip the accent, but a few words seemed off. I may rewatch his parts to get more specific, but it's not bad, really.

Also, Jon has grown on me. From the initial pictures I wasn't sold. But the actor does really well...I loved his interaction with Arya!

fernandito
04-26-2011, 04:52 PM
Hold on, why would anyone have an issue with his accent if this is taking place in a completely fictional universe ? This isn't taking place in Britain or anywhere in the UK, last I checked.

I feel like Tyrion would be the sort of man who "put on airs" and tried to talk especially regal around others just to make fun of them to himself, while at the same time, messing it up so everyone knew it, just to see if they would break court civility to point it out.

But, maybe that's a Lannisport/Casterly Rock commoner accent. Tyrion picked it up from spending more time bangin' whores than being at court. His brother and sister never spent enough time among the rabble to pick it up. haha.

Seconded. I think because people see castles, peasants, and Sean Bean though, they automatically think everyone should sound British. I guarantee you that, somewhere out there in the world, a retard is asking the question...

"Wait. So it's not set in England?"

Seriously though, i've no problem with how Tyrion sounds. It's not exactly British, but it blends in. And he's so awesome, who gives a fuck?

I wasn't sure how I felt about the guy playing Littlefinger until lastnight, now I really like him though. Well, I don't like him at all actually, which is accurate to how I felt about him in the books  . I loved the scene where Jaime tells King Robert what The Mad King said as he stabbed him. I'm really loving that actor.

In general, I agree about last night's episode, though. I wasn't as blown away, but it was still awesome.

I rather enjoyed last night's ep. True, as people pointed out, it wasn't as amazing as the first two, but still something that kept me watching (especially any scenes with Tyrian in, that guy's awesome). The training at the end was also very cool, and whilst it didn't have the fantastic cliffhanger endings of the last two eps, it still ended on the right note.

Well i must say: it's great to finally see another high quality show to watch every week! That's something i find very difficult to find these days!

Definitely, I'm looking forward to watching this week in and week out :D

One element that I feel the show is handling a bit better than the books is the foreshadowing of Winter is Coming. The phrase is peppered throughout the novels, but it's different to see and hear the characters say it and look upon the despair and fear on their faces, especially when Bran's Nan is talking to him about mothers killing their own children to spare them from the cold of winter.

John Blaze

Sunday is becoming a very solid night of TV for me. I start off with The Amazing Race. I know you guys might scoff, but it's not your normal crappy reality TV show. I've always loved that show and I look forward to watching it every week.

From there I go into Game of Thrones and end the night with The Killing. I've haven't heard a lot about this show, but it's another great program from AMC. It's not as good as Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead, but it's still very entertaining. Check it out if you can.

So what did everyone think of last night's episode?

Likes
- Dany finally standing up to Viserys.
- Sam. The actor is bringing more humor to the role than Sam had in the books, but I'm really liking it so far.
- Speaking of Sam, Randall Tarly is one cold-hearted dude.
- The Ghost scene was awesome. Loved the eyes, love the growling. Scary.
- Kit Harrington IS Jon Snow to me now. Especially after him telling Sam about why he didn't have sex with Ros. That was some great stuff.
- Bronn!

Dislikes
- I felt like the Viserys/Doreah bathtub scene went on a bit too long.
- Although Littlefinger did a good job, I really wish that they would have had the Hound tell Sansa about how he got his scars. That's one of my favorite scenes in the book and I love any Sansa/Sandor interaction.

But again, that's some minor stuff. I can't wait until next week, stuff is really starting to move now!

Bethany
05-09-2011, 06:40 AM
I don't like the wolves, they are too doggie for me.
Viserys is so perfect in his insanity!
Gendry is too old and too firmly entrenched as "Chris" for me.
Cat is an insufferable, cold boor with a stick (probably weirwood) up her butt.
Sean Bean is breathing more life in to Ned than I ever saw in the books.
Arya, I love this kid.
Theon hit it perfect.

fernandito

Likes :

- I was skeptical of him at first, but the actor playing Jon Snow has really made the character his own. I can only see him getting better as the series moves along.
- The Ghost scene.
- Littlefinger revealing the Hound/Mountain's brotherly love
- That guy choking on his own blood for 2 minutes before meeting his maker
- Littlefinger pointing out to Ned the different spies in the garden

Dislikes
- The Ghost scene lasting 0.4 seconds
- Certain trivial scenes dragging on for way too long, like the Viserys hot tub scene

Also, I know that this is only the beginning of the series and that things need to progress organically, but the past two episodes have been dreadfully dull. A little more fights/scuffles please ? Kthx.

Has anyone else been reading the Recaps by James Hibberd on ew.com? They are hilarious. Sample from today's:

"After the meeting, we meet elderly councilor Grand Maester Pycelle, whose name along with wearing a massive metal chain makes him look like the world's oldest hip-hop artist. Maesters are actually scholars and scientists and each link in their chains represent one educational subject they've studied -- like Boy Scouts badges, except the badges collectively must weigh like 30 pounds and you have to drag them around for the rest of your life. It's almost as bad as a having a consolidated student loan."

I'm really enjoying this show. Every week I look forward to learning more about these characters and every week I battle with myself on whether or not I want to read these books this summer or not.

Reading your comments make me want to hold off because I know if I read the books I will watch every episode with a discerning eye of how it matches up with the books instead of just enjoying the show.

I know I will be having this conflict on a weekly basis.

Yeah, I hear you Bruno. They already have the dogs, so how hard would it be to just have them in the background of a scene. Like when Jon and Sam were talking in the mess hall, it would have been nice to see Ghost in the background. I'm missing them as a presence like they were in the book.

Last night's episode....OMG! Loved it! Thoughts:

- I was blown away by Robert and Cersei's talk with each other. AWESOME acting from Mark Addy.
- I just love Arya more and more each week.
- They are really putting a lot of energy into the Greyjoy's and their story arc.
- Speaking of the Greyjoy's....holy crap Theon dick!
- I don't think they could have done a better job showing how insane Lysa Arryn is. That scene gave me the creeps, just like it was meant to.
- Tyrion's comment to Bronn after killing the mountain man about he was willing if Catelyn was. Hilarious!
- Jamie stabbing Jory in the eye....ahhhh!
- LOVED the Jamie/Ned fight. I love how Jamie looked so cocky and confident until the fight goes on awhile and he starts to look a bit more worried when he realizes Ned really is a bad ass. I also loved Jamie knocking his own man out for ending the fight early. Ha!
- One thing that isn't sitting well with me is the Renly/Loras scene. I have no issue with what was going on, or with them being gay (I actually loved that they were gay in the books, and loved all the subtlety surrounding them). I'm not really liking how Loras is being portrayed very much at the moment, but i'll reserve further judegement until I see more of him this season.
- Spoilers for those who haven't read the first book: Can't wait to see the Khal "crown" Viserys next week! Woot!

Oh and here are two hilarious lines from the EW recap on the episode:

"Bran is annoyed that his mom isn't there, which annoys us because we spent two episodes watching her sit beside him while he was asleep. Clearly the Blair Witch dolls she made did not comfort him, and he wants her back."

"For those who missed Dany and the Dothraki's (which sounds like a terrible 1970s glam band), Episode 6 has some of the best stuff yet with that storyline."

Bethany
05-16-2011, 03:30 PM
How could you leave out the little vis a vis between Varys and Littlefinger? That was an awesome display of power.

I don't like the way Renly is being portrayed. He never came across as a simpering fop to me. I imagined him to be more along the lines of Smecker :P

I can't wait until next week! And i get to watch Episode 7 next week on HBOGo. I may die.

I really don't like the way Loras is being portrayed. Yes, he's a pretty boy, but he's also a highly skilled and highly competent swordsman. You're telling me /that/ guy is destined to be one of the best swordsman in the realm ? I'm surprised he was even able to lift up the blade.

Also, I know that Lysa needs to be portrayed as a woman on the precipice on madness, but the breast feeding thing was a little too much

And yes, the Jaime vs Ned duel was amazing. This is definitely the best episode thus far.

I know there have been numerous discussions about that scene, but I'm not sure why everybody is automatically assuming the kid was actually sucking on a real breast. In fact, I doubt he was sucking on a fake breast.

It's possible that the breast was a CGI creation. The shot of the horses head being cut off was CGI. Also, the shots of some of the castles off in the distance is probably a CGI creation. It's possible they could be minatures (or bigatures depending on how you look at it.) It's also possible that the scene was shot using split screen. This is how I would do it. It's cheaper and pretty easy.

TV and movies have used similar techniques for years. For instance, a film like the original Parent Trap. The same actress was shot twice and then the scenes were superimposed to look as if she was acting with another actress. All they would have to do is shoot the scene with a real breast and then shoot it with the kid. Could have shot the kid on a green screen sucking a bottle and then removed it in post.

I have no idea how it was done, I just doubt anybody would let their child suck on the breast of a real woman at that age, or a fake boob for that matter. If anybody has actual proof of how it was shot, I'd love to hear it.

Another good episode. I love the scenes where Ned is interacting with his children. Even though he is this warrior with all this power, it's funny to see him deal with things that any parent must deal with. I was a little disappointed with what happened to Viserys. I kind of liked his character and thought it could go in a lot of different directions. That was a pretty badass scene though.

Also, I'm wondering who this fellow is that stood up for Tyrion. Where did he come from? Why did he help him? I'm hoping they touch upon this.

I was wondering - when ADoD finally rolls around, will everyone be picturing the characters as played by the actors while reading the novels ?

That ending was shot perfectly. It's kind of fun not knowing what's going to happen. I just started reading Game of Thrones and I'm loving every syllable of it. It's also pretty cool to already have faces to put with the names. You guys are right though, they're not showing the direwolves enough. It seems like each character is defined by the unique relationship they have with their wolf.

I will finish watching the first season before finishing the first book. After that, I'm not sure what I'm going to do. It's going to be pretty hard to hold off on reading the books and wait for the next season to air on HBO.

Last night's episode was just epic. GRRM should write them all!

- I loved Robb tonight. It was nice to see him shine. I especially liked the scene where he decided to call his Bannermen and then the shot looking out the window and seeing all the ravens taking flight.

- SYRIO. Man that was awesome, taking out all the Lannister guards with just a wooden sword. And now, i'm even more convinced that Syrio is still alive, especially with what seemed to be a hint from GRRM, with the whole "What do we say to the God of Death?...Not today" part. I think Syrio could have easily disabled Meryn Trent, even with a broken sword. His eyes were exposed, etc...

- Lots of direwolves tonight. They are so obviously dogs and move like dogs, but I'm just happy to see them at this point, so I won't complain. (Although it does annoy me that Ghost is making so much noise).

- Khal Drogo is a badass. Enough said.

- I really liked Sansa in this episode. I think the actress did a wonderful job at the end conveying how scared she was while pleading before Joffery, yet still showing some strength and courage. She is still a Stark afterall.

- How awesomely intimidating was the Hound in tonight's episode?

- Jon about to knife the shit out of Ser Allister.

- Jon's fight with the white walker wasn't nearly as scary as it was in the books.

- I read online earlier that the phrase “The Full Monty” can now be replaced with “The Full Hodor.” But for real, if we are going to keep having full frontal male nudity, can we please get some naked Jason Momoa screen time? Please?

- Shagga was great. As was Tyrion in all his scenes.

- Arya's first kill!

No, it wasn't. This brings up a dilemma for me - some of the scarier/more high fantasy bits in the novels have actually lost a lot of their flash in the transition from books to small screen. I'm worried that some of the other high concept bits (especially the dragon scenes) are going to be downscale and end up feeling somewhat ... mundane.

How he was killed by a faceless man who then took his place? If the Faceless Men have magic that allows them to change their faces at will, as we've read in the books (the Kindly Man showed Arya he could, remember) then why should Trant be Trant at all?

Yup, Martin isn't very conventional when it comes to certain storytelling aspects. As you've found out, he's not big on the cliched last-minute-rescue stance, and for that I applaud him (although I was really pissed off when I read that too).

Yeah, pretty much.

I'm just so used to somebody saving the day and the hero survives. It's a breath of fresh air honestly. It raises the stakes for the whole show. They killed off the most famous person on the show. A person that probably brought in a lot of viewers who were fans of LoTR and saw Boromir in a role that seemed similar. That's pretty much what happened to me. I had heard about A Song of Fire and Ice from people on this very site, but I just had not gotten around to reading them. When I saw Bean in the trailer for the show, I knew it was right up my alley. I just hope most viewers are hooked on the show and don't abandon it now.

Also, there has been a lot of talk of producers bringing in a big-name actor next season to play Stannis Baratheon (who will be a major character in the next few seasons) to fill the void Sean Bean has left. Not concerned with his lack of anglo-saxoness so much as I am if he can act the part. :P

IDK, the acting part is definitely more important, but I like it when an actor looks like I imagined him. And who in their fucken mind would confuse Mark Addy and Mark Strong as brothers? Not that I was ever happy with Addy as King Robert anyway. I like the actor, don't get me wrong, and he did it well, but Robert Baratheon, in the books, ....fuck it, let's just say I was disappointed.

Jason Momoa as Khal Drogo = heaven

What the hell is up with Renly and Loras' affair? What's going on there? What possible reason could they have added that for? <-- just a general rant

Totally agree with you on the Khal. Jason Momoa = Super hot.

As for the Renly/Loras affair, it is in the books, but very subtly. GRRM has even confirmed in during various interviews that he intended those two characters to be gay. Obviously they really elaborated on it in the show. I missed it on my first read through, read about it online and then picked it up on my re-read. The biggest line pointing to it is actually in A Clash of Kings when Jamie says something along the lines of "I'm going to shove Loras Tyrell's sword so far up his ass that even Renly Baratheon won't be able to find it". Other clues are their private "praying" sessions they have together every night, Loras burying Renly alone, in a place only he knows along with other things.

Oh, and Still Servant - I think people don't like him because of (without giving too much away) the people he surrounds himself with and things he does based on listening to them. I don't think it's so much of disliking Stannis himself.

I had my sister watch the first episode of Game of Thrones and she pretty much hated it. She really didn't like the incest stuff. Granted, we happen to be twins, so the stuff with Cersei and Jamie really creeped her out, which I can understand.

I guess it makes sense because you guys are all here, which means you all love The Dark Tower. Anyway, I'm looking forward to the finale. I'm going to hate having to wait for season 2, but at least I have a bunch of the Fire and Ice books to look forward to. :)

Yes. He's not a particularly nice person, but a great character. As for those he surrounds himself with, I thought the red lady was an interesting villain. And more stuff to freak people out if they show a certain birthing scene. Dear me. It'll be interesting to see how she is depicted.

DRAGONS

Emily
06-19-2011, 09:27 PM
Alright, I thought the finale was awesome. I loved the scene where Jon's brothers come and stop him from leaving The Wall. Also, obviously the dragons at the end were fuggin' awesome. And usually I get pretty annoyed when shows don't stick to minor details for the sake of things looking pretty, but I was really glad they didn't have Daenerys lose all of her hair. Also, I think I've said this like 30 times, but I love the kids who play Bran and Arya. They're so adorable. Also glad we got to see Rickon a little bit more. OH, and I'm so glad they included the Jaime Lannister line, "There are no men like me. There's only me." AWESOME.

Things I wasn't crazy about: I know Bethany mentioned this, but I really am not crazy about the portrayal of Shae. I don't understand why they made her so different, but I think she's annoying and strange. I kind of thought that actress was hot at first, but in tonight's episode I thought she looked like a strange, exotic cross between a snake and a horse? Really I just don't like that they changed her so much from the books. My biggest complaint tonight is the Pycelle scene, and then the Varys/Littlefinger scene that followed it. That Pycelle scene was so horribly boring I actually got annoyed and started fidgeting in my seat, which I never do. I don't understand what the point of that scene was. It seemed like a supreme waste of finale episode time. And I don't know if it was because I was annoyed already, but the Varys/Littlefinger scene right afterwards bored me also.

All in all, it was a great episode, I just can't help but be weirdly critical of finales.

Erin
06-20-2011, 07:06 AM
Excellent episode as well. I totally agree with you about the Pycelle and Littlefinger/Varys scenes. I think they could have been left out this season and Dany's final scene could have been expanded a bit. I would have loved to seen Drogo's bloodriders who had previously shunned Dany bow down to her after seeing the Dragons. It seemed a bit weird for Jorah to proclaim her "blood of my blood" when he's not even Dothraki.

I loved the King in the North scene and I'm really impressed with the actor playing Robb. These past couple episodes have been so convincing with the emotion he's displaying.

I also really liked how you heard the Lord Commander's speech to Jon while it showed the Night's Watch armoring up and leaving to head beyond the Wall to find Benjen Stark and see what is going on with the wildlings. That was a really moving scene.

The Dragons scene was just awesome. The dragons themselves looked great, Dany looked great (I'm glad they left her hair unburnt as well. Something like that works in the books, but seeing her suddenly bald onscreen would have distracted the average viewer out of the moment) and the mood was awesome.

Oh, and I'm glad they threw the Cersei/Lancel scene in there. They didn't say what was on that letter she was reading, but I bet it was informing her of Jamie's capture. If so, that's an interesting deviation from the books, having Cersei already sleeping with other people BEFORE learning of Jamie being imprisoned. Huh. Cersei likes to keep it in the family.

Bring on season 2! Did anyone notice the green in the flame during the Season 2 teaser? Wildfire anyone? One big concern I'm hearing a lot about for Season 2 (which starts filming July 25th) is the budget. The cast is ever expanding, all Dany scenes next season will have to have CGI dragons in them, the direwolves are growing and dogs aren't going to cut it for much longer, there are huge battlescenes in book 2, giants and mammoths, all the House of the Undying stuff with Dany in book 2 and so on. Lots of CGI needed. I wish the show could have a movie's budget to fit it all in. :(

Bethany
06-20-2011, 07:24 AM
I am afraid that a huge deviation with Pycelle is in the making. Why go to all those (boring) lengths to establish he is not as infirm or doddering as he puts on? A huge waste of what could have been dragon time. And I, too, loved the scene with Lord Mormont and the Night's Watch. Had I not known that Dany's scene was still pending, that would have been the perfect place to end the season. Shae is so annoying, I can't wait :P I don't like Roz. Why does she keep showing up everywhere? the King in the North scene was incredible. Theon's piece hurt my heart (you know why). I liked the dragons, they were not Disneyfied at all. And I think I kinda have the hots forJorah.

I think I will let Annabeth sum it up for me:

"That. Was. Epic."

fernandito
06-20-2011, 08:16 AM
Agree with Pycelle, waste of precious screen time.

I personally loved the exchanges between Littlefinger and Varys. Two insidious characters acknowledging that they both pledge allegiance with the winning side under the pretense of 'serving the realm'.

Loved the dragon scenes, but I'm a little worried about how they're going to portray them in the seasons to come. If the CGI isn't up to snuff, we could be in trouble.

Love everything and anything having to do with Jon/the wall. Does anyone else notice that whenever they start to talk about the Whitewalkers, there's this slice of audio that they play, it's like a wolf's howl accompanied by the sound of the wind howling ? It's subtle but it lends much more poignancy to any mention of the danger to come. I freakin' love it.

BRING ON SEASON 2 !

Dragons? You guys keep talking about dragons, but I didn't notice any dragons in the whole episode. :scared:

What an amazing ending to an amazing season. People who know me know that I love obsessing about TV/books/movies and I've already been the recipient of playful teasing from family and friends. From The Lord of the Rings, to Lost, to The Dark Tower, there's nothing like getting totally lost in a form of entertainment.

What I liked/loved/adored

Sansa and Joffrey. Joffrey is quickly becoming one of the best villains in TV history. I loved how Sansa was going to push him off the bridge. Would have been a nice little parallel with what happened to Bran. I'm really looking forward to seeing how Sansa's character develops.

"There are no men like me. There's only me." Classic. I also loved the Robb scenes.

Rickon sighting.

Arya/Gentry scene.

Jon Snow. I like pretty much anything Jon Snow does. His scene with the Nights Watch was just awesome.

I really like Jorah. He's fast becoming one of my favorite characters.

Dragons. There were fucking dragons. 'Nuff said.

I was going to call this next section, "stuff I didn't like" but there's almost nothing I dislike about this show so:

Stuff I wanted more of

Would have liked another scene wrapping up the season for the Starks.

Would have liked a little bit more from Tyrion that episode.

I didn't like the Pycelle scene. It just didn't work, then again, I was distracted.

No Bronn. I love that guy. Wanted at least one scene.

I was kind of looking forward to seeing Drogo as some bad ass warrior. Oh well.

I can't really think of anything else right now, but I will just say that I'm extremely excited for what's to come in the books/movies. I love adding a show like GoT to my list of fine, quality programming.

Ok, off to go finish reading Game of Thrones.

What the hell, there are only ten episodes in the season?! Fuck that. I was coming in here to be all "omg I love this series when's the next episode" and that totally killed my high. That being said, I fucking love this show, I think the casting is brilliant and I don't hate the child actors because they can actually act. While I kind of hate that they keep killing off the interesting/awesome characters, it keeps it from getting predictable which I would have hated more. NO ONE IS SAFE. :ninja:

The only thing I didn't like was the dragons... they looked too CGI. I know there's really no way to pull off dragons, but I think in general puppets have a slightly better look to them. Or they could have taken some sort of lizard and glued wings to it. :P They were a lot better than usual (think Harry Potter atrocities) but I still winced.

I was going to get the books out of the library but everyone in the damn county had the same idea. Must find someone to borrow from.

Season 2 castings are starting to role in!

Apparently Asha has been cast, but her name has been changed to Yara to avoid confusion with Osha.

http://winter-is-coming.net/2011/07/asha-renamed-and-cast/

Also, GRRM on his blog left clues that point to Gwendoline Christie as Brienne. I'm super pumped about that particular casting, she's always been my top choice. She's pretty, but she's more than got the size and I'm sure she can be made to look quite plain in armor and make-up.

Wow, they just now care about confusing names? I was having a lot of trouble watching the first time around because everyone's names rhyme or start with the same letters (Bran/Bronn and Jorah/Jory for example). And Yara reminds me of Yoren (or Arya!), so I think they're not helping themselves any.

Erin

Erin

That's about the age I pictured Stannis in my head, but that's based on the characters ages in the books. Like in the book, Ned is in his early 30's, much younger than Sean Bean. They aged them up on the show.

But yeah, to me he looks a lot younger than Mark Addy's Robert, more than just a couple years.

I just watched a clip of him as Thomas Jefferson in HBO's John Adams and he was great in it.

He makes a good Davos.

All this casting is making me excited! Next season will be here before we know it.

And that guy is a perfect Davos.

I was reading some Game of Thrones casting stuff(http://www.themarysue.com/eccleston-joining-game-of-thrones/) and saw that Christopher Eccleston might be up for Stannis Baratheon. This would make me excited beyond words, but just seems to be rumor right now. He would be perfect.

Oh, and Natalie Dormer from The Tudors(as Anne Boleyn)and Captain America has been cast as Margaery Tyrell.

Not him, someone else has been cast as Stannis.

Oh, yeah, I remember that now from this thread, but I was thinking it was just a possible casting. Bleh. I think Eccleston would be much better.

He would be. I loved him in Gone In 60 Seconds. Also, Natalie Dormer is HOT. She should be Maergery.

Eccleston would fucking own as Stannis.

So far there have only been two chapters in Clash of Kings that I've read with Stannis in them, but it seems like Eccleston has too much personality to play Stannis. Seems like his best quality would be wasted. I'm sure the actor they chose to play Stannis will be good.

As the series goes on, Stannis gets a lot of really subtle, funny one-liners. But, I'm down with this actor they hired to play him...I haven't really been disappointed with any of the casting so far, minus Lena Headey and she won me over.

German actor Tom Wlaschiha has been cast as Jaqen H'ghar! And I mean seriously, just based on looks alone, this couldn't be a more perfect casting! I hope they keep his two-tone hair on the show, too.

It's not confirmed yet, but George R R Martin posted casting clues on his blog today for what appears to be the casting of Roose Bolton. This is the guy who most people think it's going to be:

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0568385/

If so, holy crap. I clicked that picture and saw Roose Bolton staring back at me. Granted, I never pictured him bald, but that face is dead on what I had in my mind.

Well with a scraggly beard and some dirt on his face I could see this. From the head shot it hard to tell if this actor has the physical attributes I associated with Crastor.

I'm willing to bet that if there's a ginger in the Skins cast, she's a shoo in for Ygritte.

Just thought I'd give you guys an update on where I'm at in the Ice & Fire series. I'm almost finished with Clash of Kings. I just completed the chapter where Jon lets Ygritte live. I'm taking the books deliberately slow. I just like savoring them. I also purchased Storm of Swords at Borders. It was only 25% off, but I figured I should grab it while they still have it.

I'm really enjoying the series. Clash of Kings has been a little slow at times, but I don't mind it. I can feel that it's building to something, so it feels right.

I have to admit I'm a HUGE fan of this series at the moment, not just the TV show but the whole Song Of Fire and Ice it's absolutely mind blowing!!

I've got the TV show page on my facebook and saw this the other day -

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2011/04/13/game-of-thrones-for-dummies.html

It's a run down of ALL the casting for season 2 with little tidbits for the character in the show so it is a little spoiler filled if you've not read the books. While I think on - i'm not so big on massive spoilers for the books so was just wondering if there' a way to use spoiler spaces when i message?

If you want to mark something as a spoiler, highlight your text and then click on the icon that looks like an old fashioned movie reel or kinda like a radiation warning sign. Also, we have a thread that is dedicated to discussing the books, though both the show and the books get discussed in both places. http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?1616-A-Song-of-Ice-and-Fire-******Spoilers!!!&p=635103#post635103

Welcome to the discussion, by the way. Winter is coming.
