View Full Version : Book Collection: harrison ryan's Thrifty Acquisitions

I've looked at a lot of great, expensive collections on the boards in the last few weeks, so I wanted to start a collection thread of my own. However, since I am a (somewhat) starving artist and used bookstore employee who doesn't make a lot of scratch, my collection thread will showcase the cheap paperbacks and more common finds that are both affordable and just downright fun for me to collect. I realize this thread may be a bore to the advanced collector but I enjoy taking pictures and presenting them here too much to let that deter me. Hopefully, anyone who takes the time to browse can find something interesting herein.

Here's my humble collection, my ever-growing cache of thrifty acquisitions:

This is the one that kind of kick-started my current collecting. I've been a huge King fan for years, buying each new novel and short story collection as it was released, but I've never considered myself a serious collector. Still don't. But this bargain baby led me to keep an eye out for the older paperbacks in good condition. I love the cover art and design schemes of King's older work from the 70s and 80s, and a lot of the other stuff Signet/NAL released from the same time period.

When I saw these come into the store, I had to have them, even though I already owned the same stories in updated designs. They were all in excellent condition, which is somewhat rare for my place of employment.
Condition: VG/VG+

From what I gather, this was released by the BOMC in conjunction with On Writing. This one has the white boards, which (I think) means it is a first edition. They get points in my book for including The Ballad of the Flexible Bullet, one of my favorite King short stories.
Condition: VG+/NF. Fornit some Fornus!

Keep 'em coming! By the way, I have a nice collection of New English Library paperbacks - very cheap stuff but I love them (great artwork). Check them out in my collection thread.

Thanks, Collecting Friends! They are cheapies, but I love 'em. Hmmm....what's next? How about:

http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss27/starkoryan81/OtherStuff/DSC01783.jpg

This is the first Signet printing of 'Salem's Lot. The spine is quite creased, and there is some water damage to the bottom of the book. The water didn't damage the story, though!
Condition: Poor. Update: I managed to purchase a copy in better condition, then I gave the old one to a friend.

http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss27/starkoryan81/SalemsLotUpdate.jpg

http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss27/starkoryan81/OtherStuff/DSC01774.jpg

Next is the twenty-fifth printing. It has the TV miniseries logo and info on the back cover, and lists Cujo on the "author of" line, so that puts it post-'81. There is some creasing to the spine, and general yellowing of the pages, but the covers are in pretty decent shape (with the exception of the corners on the front there).
Condition: Good.
http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss27/starkoryan81/OtherStuff/DSC01782.jpg

I rescued this one from the dumpster. Thirty-fourth printing. They've re-worked the cover again to suit a new overarching design scheme for paperback reprints. Unsure of the date, but the $4.50 cover price probably puts it in the early to mid-nineties.
Condition: Poor. Update: I moved mid-way through last year, and think I ended up giving it back to the dumpster.

I should note that I'm restricting this thread to items I've purchased in the last six months or so, when the discovery of that old copy of Roadwork (see above) kind of ignited an interest in augmenting and re-working my existing collection of King and similar authors. There's no real rhyme or reason to the order I'm posting, but it's roughly chronological to the date of acquisition and I'm keeping multiple copies of the same book to a single post. Next!

http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss27/starkoryan81/OtherStuff/DSC01798.jpg

Last October I sold one of these to a customer while I was manning the register, and was very jealous that I didn't see it first! With a little waiting and hoping, another one soon arrived and I eagerly snapped it up. I read it that night and LOVED it. I think I've seen Bev Vincent's name attached to a few posts on this very message board, too, if I'm not mistaken!
First Printing. Condition: VG.

http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss27/starkoryan81/OtherStuff/DSC01799.jpg

This one came in at the same time, a kind of added bonus. The pictures of the Bangor Standpipe and other locations that inspired the city of Derry alone make it worth buying.

Great interviews with a variety of horror authors, circa '85. Of course, the King is one of them!
First trade paperback edition. Condition: Good.

http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss27/starkoryan81/OtherStuff/DSC01821.jpg

This little paperback reprints Fangoria's King articles and interviews from a number of years. Not very special, but I had fun reading it!

Richard Matheson is an author I was turned onto by seeing numerous references to his work in King's writing. I'm fairly certain he's mentioned a bit in Danse Macabre, for one.

Here are the Kurt Vonnegut paperbacks I amassed over a period of a couple weeks about a month ago or so. Much like the King stuff, I prefer the vintage design scheme used on the ones from the mid-70s. You'll notice I have two versions of Sirens of Titan. The first one (first row, second from left) is the first Dell paperback printing from 1966. My copies of Breakfast of Champions, Wampeters, Foma and Granfalloons, Galapagos, Hocus Pocus, and The Eden Express (by Kurt's son, Mark Vonnegut) are first paperback printings.
Condition: Varies.

http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss27/starkoryan81/OtherStuff/DSC01832.jpg

This is the first paperback printing of Venus on the Half-Shell, by Vonnegut's fictional sci-fi author Kilgore Trout. It was actually an early work by Philip Jose Farmer. Farmer fooled many less-discerning readers into believing the novel was written by Vonnegut himself. Vonnegut was not pleased.
Condition: VG-

http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss27/starkoryan81/OtherStuff/DSC01888.jpg

Book club version. I wish I hadn't bought it. If I see a nice paperback, I'll replace it and re-sell. BCE's suck.
Condition: VG.

http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss27/starkoryan81/OtherStuff/DSC01862.jpg

One of Vonnegut's few plays. It's a trade paperback version, a little fewer and farther between at the store. Condition is somewhat appalling, but for bargain basement prices, you can't always be too picky. Eighth printing.
Condition: Poor.

First paperback printing. This novel was the inspiration for the similarly-named movie. I'm pretty sure this was a paperback original, but I'm not certain. I thought I did pretty well on it when I saw them going for upwards of $40 on ebay (though that doesn't always say a lot). My copy is in such excellent shape I highly doubt it's ever been opened.
Condition: NF.

We'll get back to King in just a bit. But first:

http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss27/starkoryan81/OtherStuff/DSC01795.jpg

It's a fourth printing from July 1979. I don't collect Anne Rice, but I have read most of her Vampire Chronicles stuff, so I couldn't pass this one up. I like the typical paperback romance-type cover, but I don't think it relates particularly well to the contents inside. A co-worker pointed out that you could tell it was older simply from the small font used on the author's name! At this point, Rice had no other credits to her (own) name.
Condition: VG.

http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss27/starkoryan81/OtherStuff/DSC01772.jpg

Fourth printing. I needed one with the die-cut cover. I read a post on the board a few days ago where someone (was it you, carlosdetweiller?) pointed out that it's harder to find copies where the eyes line up properly with the die-cut holes. I immediately thought of my misaligned copy!

Now for some of my proudest new acquisitions, though certainly not the thriftiest!

http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss27/starkoryan81/OtherStuff/DSC01760.jpg

First NAL/US printing. Condition: NF.

http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss27/starkoryan81/OtherStuff/DSC01762.jpg

First NAL/US printing. In my research, I discovered that The Long Walk was the only Bachman paperback original to have multiple printings, three to be exact. I noticed from ebay auctions that the third printing has a UPC barcode on the lower back cover, whereas the first printing has a smaller version of the front cover art. This cemented my decision to go after a first. Does anyone know if the second printing has the UPC or the art?
Condition: VG+.

Grant first trade editions. Another bookstore acquisition. I originally bought them just as they were released, but those copies have been "well-loved", having been read several times and lent to friends. I acquired these extra-nice versions last week, and--as is the way of things--it has led me to seek out first trades of the rest of the series, with the notable exception of DT1 (where I went for a second edition). Thanks to the members of this board, I have nearly completed my set! Expect an update on this very soon!
Condition: NF.

Thank you, Ric and Ben Staad!
By the way, Ric, I read the first third of that copy of Carrie last night. I couldn't put it down. It's interesting to see just how much King's style has matured over the years. This will be my third reading of the novel, if I recall. I'm thinking of re-reading all of King's work up through Needful Things or so, and doing it in order of release. Anyone want to join me?

I hear you, Michaël. Most of the books in this thread have (thus far) gone unread. I keep telling myself I won't buy any more until I've finished the ones I have, but I'm usually making this promise to myself as I'm opening my wallet.

http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss27/starkoryan81/OtherStuff/DSC01787.jpg

I already had a copy of the mostly black version of this, but I wanted a white one as well. This is one of my favorite covers, along with the first paperback version of Cujo (which I have yet to obtain) which also features a similarly central illustration. This is the second printing.
Condition: VG.

http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss27/starkoryan81/OtherStuff/DSC01792.jpg

This is the ninth printing, a movie tie-in version. It's been a while since I've reviewed the film, but as I recall it's pretty awful. Still needed it for the colleksh.
Condition: Poor.

http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss27/starkoryan81/OtherStuff/DSC01789.jpg

First paperback printing. It's notable for the inner cover--an illustration for Misery's Return by Paul Sheldon--which features King as the dashing male protagonist.
Condition: Good-.

These are ex-library copies of short bios aimed at the young adult age group. One is marked "Harris County Library" (state?) and the other "San Diego Public Library". Somehow they found their way to Kentucky, and into my hot little hands. I sincerely hope they were discards, or else the Library Policemen are coming after somebody...
Condition: Good-. Cost: Free.

EDIT: I re-checked the books. Both are stamped "withdrawn." Phew!

Update: These went the way of the Dodo when I moved. No great loss.

Collecting the Signet King paperbacks led me to notice others released by the same imprint. Some of my favorite illustrations adorn the work of British writer James Herbert, who is probably best known for:

Something about this weird photo cover--featuring a patently fake skeletal hand emerging from what appears to be a rather large vat of strawberry Jell-o--appealed to me. Also, the fact that it includes the King short story "Survivor Type". This is the second printing.
Condition: VG.

http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss27/starkoryan81/OtherStuff/DSC01811.jpg

Another paperback anthology with a King short, this time it's "The Night Flier" listed somewhat prophetically under the first subsection of the book dubbed "In the Court of the Crimson King." This is the first Signet/NAL printing from April '89. It's also notable in that it was edited by Douglas E. Winter, author of a number of King ancillary titles including the excellent (and highly recommended) Stephen King: The Art of Darkness.
Condition: Good+.

http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss27/starkoryan81/OtherStuff/DSC01823.jpg

I discovered this one last week. As a critical examination of King's early work, it leaves something to be desired, but I did enjoy the Peter Straub contribution quite a bit. Unfortunately, some of the other contributors seem more content to focus on the film adaptations of King's first 4-6 published novels, at the expense of the works which formed their basis. It's a later reprint, but since we don't see them every day at work, I thought I'd grab it for the collection.

As yet, I have not read any Theodore Sturgeon. I do know he (or at least his name) was the inspiration for Vonnegut's fictional sci-fi author Kilgore Trout...get it? I can't help but think this novel may have also inspired the screenwriter(s) of Blade Runner to some extent. Remember the line, "Our goal here is more human than human?" It's a bit I don't believe occurs anywhere in the Dick novel.
Condition: Good+.

Ralph McQuarrie, the concept artist behind many of the iconic designs of the orignal Star Wars trilogy, also worked for Ballantine/Del Rey as an illustrator of paperback sci-fi novels in the late 70s/80s. I stumbled on a blog showcasing his work in this arena in the course of my research for an art project. I decided I'd look for them at the bookstore, since my employee discount allows me to pick this stuff up for next to nothing. So far I've found these four:

This beautiful piece of work JUST arrived in the mail:

http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss27/starkoryan81/OtherStuff/DSC01890.jpg

A Donald Grant first trade. Fellow member Mulleins gave me a great deal on it, as there is a (very) faint water ring on the front board. The front foldover flap of the DJ sustained a small crease in the upper right corner from a hasty closing of the book as well, but it's otherwise quite flawless and I'm very happy with it! Thanks, mulleins!

Give it a go, my friend. It won't take you twenty minutes. You can see its echoes in a lot of King's work. Storm of the Century immediately springs to mind.

That's about it for my acquisitions from the last 6 months. I will be updating as new stuff arrives. Which will be tomorrow!

Now for my new King pb's:

http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss27/starkoryan81/OtherStuff/DSC01911.jpg

I'm still waiting for a nice first printing to come in. That's the one with the metallic silver, as opposed to this muted gray used on subsequent printings. This is the twelfth printing. I needed a good reading copy for The Shelf. Condition: Good-

Update: I gave that copy away when this nice first printing fell in my lap:

http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss27/starkoryan81/OtherStuff/DSC01913.jpg

I really dig the cover art on this movie tie-in version. I just noticed the gleaming eyes in the cornstalks, and they used a shade of red and typeface that are very similar to The Long Walk, which is a plus. Condition: Good-.

http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss27/starkoryan81/OtherStuff/DSC01916.jpg

I think we can agree that this is an awesome cover to an awesome novel. I didn't have a copy of the original, truncated version, so I've grabbed this one until I can replace it with one in better condition.

Interesting to note that they use a smaller version of the illo on the back of this one but replace it with a barcode in later printings. I think this is standard practice. I know they did it with the third printing of The Long Walk, as mentioned previously in this thread. I've made something of a study of these things.
Condition: VG.

http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss27/starkoryan81/OtherStuff/DSC01920.jpg

Here's the tenth printing of The Running Man, another tie-in. I also have a third printing with a different photo of Arnold and a slightly more retro feel:

http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss27/starkoryan81/RunningManArnold.jpg

Can anyone think of another King novel with multiple tie-in versions? I know there are two for the Stand By Me tie-in of DS. Any others? Night Shift? I must own them all!

I'm not so into the later King stuff (in paperback anyway), but I couldn't pass up this Hodder trade version of Just After Sunset, which may be the only King book I had yet to own in any form. The UK version's Dali-esqe cover illo is a distinct improvement over its American counterpart, in my humble.
Third printing. Condition: VG.

http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss27/starkoryan81/OtherStuff/DSC01905.jpg

A first/first in pretty decent shape. I like the gold version better than the red foil. I now have a red foil as well. Only the silver variant left to acquire! I figure it will be a while (if ever) before I see one without any rubbing to the gold. Buying this may start me down the road of collecting firsts of the older work, a potentially costly endeavor which seems to be the next step in this collecting fever. Will I have to change the title of the thread? Stay tuned.
Condition: VG+.

And now for my new pride and joy, featured in the background of most of these newest snaps:

http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss27/starkoryan81/OtherStuff/DSC01903.jpg

This was waiting in the mailbox when I came home from work this afternoon. It is the second edition. I love it. It's in impeccable condition, and it has tested the (current) upper limit on what I will allow myself to spend on a book.
Condition: Fine. DJ: NF.
Maybe not a "thrifty" acquisition, but a fine one!

Thanks, my friend! Between The Gunslinger, Rage, and The Long Walk, I am very happy with the more costly items I've collected recently. I'm a little afraid I'll mess them up if I read them, though.

Here's an interesting new acquisition. This must be one of King's earliest novels, because I can't seem to find out much about it and there's no other titles listed in the front of the book. The copyright date is 1973. Does anyone know the story here?

The UTD Collector's set was offered by Scribner for $75. It is exactly the same as the Signed/Limited just without the signed page. It has the belly band, the cards, and the different binding/endpapers.

My new Thrifites from the last few days:

http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss27/starkoryan81/OtherStuff/DSC01972.jpg

First printing of The Stand: Complete and Uncut hardcover in VG condition. There's some wrinkling to the cellophane on the cover, but overall it's in great shape.
I also picked up the 'Salem's Lot Illustrated Edition (first printing of the one from 2005).
...and I couldn't help but pick this one (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&_trksid=p4340.l2557&rt=nc&nma=true&item=390304627862&si=tn3De3uXslB0bPgPqFudHNN%252FNQY%253D&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWNX%3AIT) up as well. Finally bought some batteries for the camera tonight, so here's a few new pics:

http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss27/starkoryan81/OtherStuff/Dicks.jpg

I'm always on the lookout for Philip K. Dick stuff. Love the cover art on these old paperbacks. From left to right they are The Divine Invasion (kinda got cut off), The Game-Players of Titan, Eye in the Sky, Martian Time-Slip, The Crack in Space, The World Jones Made, and The Unteleported Man. I haven't had time to read them...yet. That's some of my art in small acrylic frames there on the right.
I also have a paperback first and an early book club version of The Man in the High Castle on my "stash shelf" at work, but I haven't purchased them yet.
Oh yeah, dig this: The tagline for The Crack in Space? A single enigmatic sentence: "Find another world for the deep-freeze people." How can you not love that?

I snagged these early Koontz pbs:

http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss27/starkoryan81/OtherStuff/Koontz.jpg

The Fall of the Dream Machine was one of his very earliest works...this is the first printing, an Ace Double with The Star Venturers by Kenneth Bulmer on the flipside.
A Darkness in My Soul was a strange read, and my first encounter with Koontz's early sci-fi work.
Here's the first paperback printing of Night Chills with sweet late 70s/early 80s art. I jokingly refer to this book as Night Night Night Night Chills.

Time for some more notables (in the morning light):

http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss27/starkoryan81/OtherStuff/notables.jpg

Here's a first edition of Ghost Story in excellent condition. Shardik is a BCE I rescued from the round file. The Beast That Shouted Love at the Heart of the World is a book club as well, which is actually the true first! It's in VG+ condition and contains the short story "A Boy and His Dog" which I consider a classic. The Face of Fear is an early Koontz written under the Coffey pseudonym (alas, this is just the BCE). Here's the CD Blockade Billy I picked up just yesterday. Alas, it is the second printing and doesn't have the trading card. Anyone got one you're willing to trade for artwork?

http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss27/starkoryan81/OtherStuff/SciFi.jpg

We'll get back to King in a bit, but here's a few more notable acquisitions first. Sphere is a first edition. The Man in the High Castle is an early book club edition, but I haven't done the research to find out just how early (probably late 60s/early 70s). There's a Signet reprint of Do Androids Dream? (DADOES?) that's been through the war, but is still coo', and The Penultimate Truth was bought for a song in VG+ condition (pretty sure it's unread, pretty sure that's the first paperback printing--NAP listed).

Here's some ARCs. Haunted and Rant by Chuck Palahniuk and No Country for Old Men by Cormac McCarthy. Someday I'll have to learn the difference between ARCs and proofs, because it's confusing. The Haunted cover copy describes it as a "bound galley". Rant is an "Advance Reading Copy." No Country is an "Advance Reader's Edition." Every listing I've found for No Country while researching its value has stated that this is actually the uncorrected proof. Can anyone enlighten me further about these three books?

I don't think it's easy to find a first printing of The Shining without at least a little rubbing to the wraps. This Shiny Shining is most likely unread, with no crease to the spine and only moderate rubbing. I ditched the later printing I had previously. Not shiny enough!
I resorted to ebay for the movie tie-in. Still very inexpensive.

I'm back! I brought some books:

http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss27/starkoryan81/OtherStuff/others.jpg

I got a great deal on the Absolute Death. I'm going to a Neil Gaiman signing here in town in early July, and I will be lugging this bad boy with me to get it signed. It really is a nice production, and quite hefty. That's a first edition Congo next to it. I can't pass up those early Crichton firsts when they're in good condition. I included the first printing trade paperback of Ready Player One in the pic because it rocks and you should all give it a try!

King firsts in VG/VG+ condition. I'm still (passively) looking for a good copy of Eyes of the Dragon, which is pretty much the only 80s-era King I don't have in a first edition. I've passed up multiple copies at the used book store because the dust jackets weren't nice enough.

I went to the Joe Hill signing here in town on May 4. Joe is a great guy and was very fun to interact with. I read NOS4A2 in about two days! I told him it was "binge-reading". Here is the pic of the event that Joe snapped and later tweeted. I got there early, and was reading my British edition of Heart-Shaped Box, so when he told us to hold up our books for the picture that's what I had in hand. D'oh! I just had to be different, I guess.

http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss27/starkoryan81/OtherStuff/carrie_first.jpg~original

First Signet printing. It's a little scuffed up, but nothing too terrible. The saddest part is the dulling to the upper right corner that occurred as a result of removing a recent price sticker (Philistines!).

http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss27/starkoryan81/OtherStuff/carrie_54.jpg~original

Any Philip K. Dick fans out there? (I'm looking at you, Roog)

http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss27/starkoryan81/OtherStuff/Our_Friends.jpg~original

Our Friends from Frolix 8 was originally published as a paperback original. To my knowledge, it only came out in hardcover a bit later as a book club edition, and this is it. From the Internet Speculative Fiction Database: "First printing has gutter code "B3" on page 184 [verified], indicating a January 1971 printing date". Gutter code check! Not sure if it's really worth anything, but like most of my collection, I got it for a song. VG/G.

Looking back through the thread a bit, I realized I forgot to add one of my favorite books:

http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss27/starkoryan81/OtherStuff/Stand_13_back.jpg~original

The Stand trade hardcover, 13th printing VG/NF. Comparing it to the first edition (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showwiki.php?title=Stephen+King+First+Editions:Sta nd+The+-+Trade+HC), you'll notice they added a UPC code and ISBN to the back cover and bumped the logo over a bit more to the left. List price at this point was $19.95 so I'm sure it's one of (if not the) last printings before the Revised edition was released. It's in such great shape, I figure it will make a good display copy until I find the right opportunity for a true first.

carlosdetweiller
05-25-2013, 03:53 AM
It also has the anchor logo on the spine of the dj just above the word "Doubleday." The first editions did not have that. Same is true for all of the early Doubleday books by King. If you see an anchor it is not a first edition dj. Looks like a really nice book though.

http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss27/starkoryan81/OtherStuff/Crichtons.jpg~original

I just sold some books, bought a handful more, then had a bit of a photo session. First up:

http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss27/starkoryan81/OtherStuff/Eyes_of_Dragon.jpg~original

Yeah, nothing too exciting here, but it's one of the few first editions I didn't have, yet. The book itself is in very good shape, but there is a little loss on the front cover of the jacket due to an old store sticker that was left on too long, then carelessly and quickly removed. Oh, well. It's still the best condition copy I've seen in a while, and it was very cheap.

Here's my collection of paperback copies of the Running Man, which seems to keep growing almost of its own volition. Left to right, top to bottom: First Signet/NAL printing (love this one), Second NEL printing, a couple of Signet tenth printing tie-ins, the earlier third printing tie-in, and the newest addition, an NEL printing from 1988. Hard to tell exactly which printing, the copyright page simply states, "This edition 1988."

And the funnest score of the day was this:

http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss27/starkoryan81/OtherStuff/F_SF_oct78.jpg~original

It's a bit tanned up and aged, not really in what you would call a "collectible" condition at all, and it's got that address label practically baked onto the front cover. It had probably been sitting in someone's attic or basement for years with very little protection from the elements. I rescued it for 53 cents and now it's got a good home.
Great Find. Just to let you know the true 1st was a hard cover. The only movie tie-in is the 2nd edition of the paperback with a SOON TO BE printed sticker on the cover. I'm sure the only reason their was not a full Rodger Rabbit movie tie-in was because of the adult nature of the book (something you don't want the kiddies reading) But it was novelized in the U.K. (never printed in the U.S.A.)

Great facts! Of course, I don't mind your contributions a bit. Thanks, in fact! You're welcome in "my" thread anytime. I do have a copy of all those versions of Carrie, but my photo back is a 39th printing and my musical tie-in is a 54th. I'll assume your posting the lowest numbered printings where these versions first appeared. So fun. Getting into the minutiae of paperback reprints of early King is where I live. I'm going to have to start hunting down more 'Salem's Lots now...

I've since run across several book club versions of Roger Rabbit in hardcover. The true first is a publisher's edition with a price on the dj?

Love the Crichton promo!

Rodger Rabbit I don't own a hard cover because I only collected movie tie-in editions of books but I would assume the 1st has price on the dj as for the King tie-ins it would be what ever I ran into. But I did go new book shopping every week back then. So we can assume mine would be the 1st time that cover showed up & then like the special edition West World I found it 2nd hand.

I really like the production on both of these, I couldn't help but start Insomnia last night. Thanks, David and Betts Books! (http://www.bettsbooks.com/w95020ai.html#girl)

Thanks, guys. I'm 2/3rds of the way through reading it. If I had to complain at all about it, I would say I wish Hale had done a few more illustrations and I wish they'd had a better proofreader. There are some minor omissions and spelling mistakes that are especially frequent around one spot, as well as an odd tendency to hyphenate words that don't need it, as if they were working from a file that had some words broken up due to line endings that were then re-juggled for this edition so that the breaks don't fall in the same place anymore, leaving some unnecessarily hyphenated words mid-sentence. Does that make any sense? That's my theory, anyway. Relatively minor complaints.

Typos usually really annoy me. There are a LOT of them in Nancy A. Collins's books for some reason. On the other hand, I'm 3/4 of the way through 11-22-63 and I've only encountered two typos, and they were so minor I almost missed them.

As I recall, I did not like INSOMNIA very much, although memory fails me as to why.

I'm sorry, your memory was wrong. You loved Insomnia.

I hate typos. I feel like I should circle all the mistakes and turn it back in for corrections.

And a couple of King items:

http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss27/starkoryan81/OtherStuff/Shining_Grave.jpg~original

I already have a copy of The Shining movie tie-in paperback (16th prntg), so I guess I'm just hoarding them at this point. I recently got a turntable/cd/cassette player, so I snagged the Graveyard Shift audiobook (still sealed!) for the price of a vending machine gumball.

Nice Collection! Congrats.

It wouldn't surprise me if your turntable/CD/Cassette player wasn't worth more than most of my collection! It may be time to start with collecting vinyl along with books!

The turntable is not worth much, but it makes a great surface to set up and photo books (and so far I'm resisting the vinyl collecting, it's just not my thing).

Got this:

A little wrinkled but worth the price.

Also got another full set of the Gunslinger F&SF's minus the first issue (which I included in the pic for the sake of completion):

And I might as well show off my sweet Dolso case for the S/L of Joyland while I'm at it.

Front:

And back:

I was really happy with the way the detail of the drawings held up when translated through the engraver.

What kind of lens(es) did you get? I bought just the 50d body, then picked up a 50mm f1.8 prime lens. Super-sharp, super-fast, and really cheap!

I bought it with the stock 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 lens.
It doesn't get as shallow of a DOF as I would like at times, so the 50mm f1.4 prime has been tempting me. However, I keep telling myself that I need to learn more before I buy any additional lenses. Would love to get a macro lens at some point for sure.

I used my birthday money a few weeks ago to get a decent tripod and a cheap polarizing filter from Monoprice.com. The filter in particular has been helpful for book photos.

For DOF, the 50mm 1.8 is pretty dang good, nice bokeh and only a fraction of the cost of the 1.4. You might consider that. And if you want to get tricky, you can flip the lens over and use it as a macro. Arnie here will serve as an example of the shallow DOF:

http://i558.photobucket.com/albums/ss27/starkoryan81/arniebear.jpg~original

I took this wide open at f1.8 at 1/1000.

Nice shot

The metal construction of the 1.4 is part of the appeal for me, but I've probably got a few months yet to decide.
Now the f1.2 is really expensive! That one is $1600 on Amazon.

Just what I need, another expensive hobby!

First paperback printing. It's notable for the inner cover--an illustration for Misery's Return by Paul Sheldon--which features King as the dashing male protagonist.
Condition: Good-.

One of my favourite editions of "Misery". I found this post on this forum tonight when I did a google search for "Paul Sheldon" cover version. I love it so much I even made it my profile pic here on the boards! When I first got the book I had no idea that picture was inside it and it gave me a shock lol!

Glad you found the collection, Jonah, and thanks for writing. I'm pretty sure the glossy interior Misery's Return cover is exclusive to the first printing of the paperback. Anything that features traditional illustration is a plus in my book.

I like old Crichton paperbacks. The copyright page states this is the first Dell printing in paperback, June 1970. If I'm not mistaken, it was not printed in paperback by another publisher prior to this:

I enjoyed perusing your thread, I too am a thrifty collector. :) I also really dig the old paperbacks and kick myself for cleaning mine out when my husband kept bugging me "why do you need multiple paperbacks of those books when you have them as hard cover?" Oh well, I'll just have to put in extra thrift store digging time to find them again. :nana:
