As the Dark Tower series is my passion and the cornerstone of my collection, I have been tracking the ownership of complete same-number sets for ~30 years now. As you probably know, there were only 500 Signed and Numbered Gunslingers issued (1-500) plus 12 Publishers copies plus 1 "converted" Publisher's Copy, making 13. So even though there were 1,500 S/L DT VII books, it is only possible to put together a complete set all with the same number if your number is 500 or less. With the help of many individuals, I have put together a comprehensive list of "known" owners. This is what my database shows (I would be grateful to any who could shed light on any numbers not accounted for below):

NUMBERED

AS OF JULY 9, 2023:
WE HAVE 30 COMPLETE NUMBERED SETS DTI - DTVII + LSOE + TWTTK
WE HAVE 58 COMPLETE NUMBERED SETS DTI - DTVII

WE HAVE 3 COMPLETE PUBLISHER'S SETS DTI - DTVII + LSOE + TWTTK
WE HAVE 3 COMPLETE PUBLISHER'S SETS DTI - DTVII

He's right, Wiz. Just don't let your wife find out. ;)

I know it has taken you a long time to compile this list. Great work!

Feel free to update some of those ".net" to ".com" if you feel it appropriate. Also, I'd like to confirm that I am the "Patrick" from the Grant Books wanted page, if you want to just put TDT.com after my name on #196 and #290.

I will add your data Patrick, maybe I will just just edit the first post. (Done)

Matt- I am open for a graphic, but let me look and see what I have. I am already thinking of my ultimate remarque with Roland standing, holding the rose, gazing at the Dark Tower (see below).

And, yes, I have spent a lot of time tracking these things on eBay, the Grant want page (now long defunct), my own network of collectors, ABE etc. It is a labor of love to be sure.

Note in my original post that the seller purchased this set from gunkslinger just 2 months ago for $9,500. That would be a hefty profit if he can sell it at his asking price. I think he is about 4 grand too high in this market.

Congratulations on winning the auction. Another member on this board, fsmdr, told me this and I believe it is true. If you register directly with Heritage Auctions and do your bidding on their site, rather than through eBay, the buyer's premium is 19.5%. You pay the higher premium of 22.5% if you go through eBay. Same auctions.

I've never bid with Heritage. Living in Texas I am also subject to sales tax if I were to win. It just seems like too many fees. Of course if something were listed I really wanted I would bid but would have to keep the extra fees in mind.

Welcome aboard, Shoveler! What other King books do you have?

John

Hi, and thanks for the welcome! :) I've got nearly all King books, minus the extremely rare ("The Plant", for example), but not all in the limiteds, of course! My first limited was Firestarter, bought it when I was 14 or so for something like $65 (I was obviously a huge fan at an early age). Missed out on "The Gunslinger", but saw it listed on the "Other books by Stephen King" page in some other book from around that time, I think maybe Insomnia, so I did some fast research and got a 2nd print, then got in on the lottery for the limiteds and got DTII-DTVII. The other limiteds I have are Black House, Salem's Lot, Desperation, and Regulators, plus some anthologies.

Folks -

Where is the best place to start looking to purchase a single (numbered under 500) book.

There's no way I could afford a whole set, least of all not until I hit the lottery or something. I might be able to swing a single book though.

Hey, maybe someday my name could be on this amazing list!

What are they going for, individually, approximately?

Thanks in advance.

Turtlex-
You have come to the right place!
A full same-number set will set you back approx $10,000, but since you are looking to swing a single S/L issue (under 500), then I think these ranges are appropriate for a single book. Others might differ slightly on the prices. [Note: there is a premium for a same-number set, which is why the individual prices when added do not reach $10,000]

DT I Gunslinger $5000-$6000
DT II Drawing of the Three $700-$900
DT III Wastelands $400-$500
DT IV Wizard & Glass $600-$700
DT V Wolves of the Calla $400-$550
DT VI Song of Susannah $350-$450
DT VII The Dark Tower $400-$550

I have a single Wastelands #168 that is not part of a larger same-number set, and I think I have a higher Wastelands #964 (I'd have to check) also a single that I would be willing to sell if that holds any interest for you at all. Let me know.

Just my two cents worth--the price of the DT VII may go up the closer to the issue date of the Revised Gunslinger from Grant comes, if, as usual, the owner of the DTVII can get the same-numbered Revised Gunslinger.

They are all kept in Brodart or plastic sleeves, in the fitted wardrobes in my spare rooms, at the top of the house. The rooms are constant temperature controlled, and the doors keep out any light. We do not use the top floor for anything else.

I do not have bookshelves for them yet, although I have searched in vain for anything suitable.

... With the help of many individuals, I have put together a comprehensive list of "known" owners. This is what my database shows (I would be grateful to any who could shed light on any numbers not accounted for below):

WE ARE AT 51 COMPLETE NUMBERED SETS ACCOUNTED FOR
At least 3 COMPLETE PUBLISHER's SETS

#368 (not complete I sold to jmaher2006 on eBay 11/06)
#371 (not complete I on sale at Bett's 4/07)
#374 (not complete I-III eBay offered by ersk4 8/06)
...

a few updates and corrections.....
I dont think i have #368... check your sources. My records suck but i dont see it on my inventory.

I do own #308, 352, and 1-3 of #374

I do not have detailed records of #368 which I have you down for, but in Nov 2006 you did buy several items from www.flatsigned.com and several from signedlimited. That's not to say you bought #368 from either of them.

I figure you would know if you owned #368, so I will delete that one from the list.

Also, out of curiosity, when the revised gunslinger comes out, there will technically be another 350 possible complete sets right? Obviously, they will be worth less, but will they still be considered "real" complete sets? and will this list be updated accordingly?

My opinion, because it won't include the original Gunslinger, that no, it shouldn't be updated.

Yah its really a grey area, it IS a numbered Gunslinger, but if you place it on a shelf in order of published year.... I'm not sure what I think... Given that I just bought a IV-VII set above 500 but below 850... for my personal purposes it'd be a complete set - but I think I'd have to agree that from a collectors stand point its not. It'll be one step above a II-VII set without #1.... but thats about it!

Eric-

I was not planning on updating this list to account for the variations with the Revised Gunslinger. If someone else wants to take the lead and use this list as a foundation, please go right ahead. That's not being judgemental on my part, it's a labor/time thing.

Patrick
04-22-2008, 01:19 PM
Having the revised rather than the original would not be a true matching set, in my opinion either. Sort of like a matching set, but with an asterisk.

The other question is, after this book's release, would it take all 8 books (both versions of the Gunslinger) to be considered a true matching set?

In other words, if someone had the original seven books, would you consider it somehow "short" if they didn't have the matching revised as well for some reason?

jhanic
04-22-2008, 02:23 PM
I would say yes. For a true complete matching set, all eight volumes should be there.

(I'll never have one.)

Hey Friends - with regards to the numbered sets, are the lower numbers more sought after. Say, for instance, I wanted to start collecting set # 27 (it's my lucky number) would that be harder to find than say, set 3 hundred something? Who has set 19?

Thanks.

Aside from maybe #1, #500, or due to its significance to the story, #19, I think all the sub-500 numbers are thought of as the same.

John - The revised Gunslinger really only offers The Little Sisters story extra, of which there was a sgn/ltd of 250 copies already... so if its needed, wouldn't there only be 250 complete sets?

Agreed. Only the Grant books should be considered for the set, and a "new" complete set will include all 8 books with the same number. I cannot imagine of the 50 odd complete sets that exist to our knowledge today, that many if any of those owners will not step up and get the same number of the new Revised Gunslinger S/L.

It is high but rather standard for large auction houses, unfortunately. If you are interested do NOT bid through eBay. Register directly with Heritage and bid on their website. The buyer's premium is a bit lower at 19% if you do it that way.

turtlex
05-25-2008, 01:31 PM
Gee, I never would have guessed. I've been to a couple of live auctions, and the premium was always 10%. I was shocked at 22.5 - Cripes, if you win the auction at $5000 it's an EXTRA grand!!!

Even if I was thinking to take a shot at it ( on account of really, really wanting to own a set ) there's no way I could afford the premium!

Well, you just have to factor in the buyer's premium in deciding what amount you are willing to bid. Then it is the same as any other auction. The auction house just gets a bigger percentage.

For instance, if you think $7,000 is a good price for a matching number set of the DT books, then you would bid $5670 (knowing that you would also owe 19% or $1330). Your total price would be $7,000.

Then it would be about the same as placing a $7,000 bid on eBay. You just have to adjust your thinking and bidding to allow for the buyer's premium.

One reason that I have not bid more often on Heritage Auctions is that I am in Texas and would also be hit with an 8.25% sales tax. I'm really used to internet type sales being free from state sales tax.

Welcome to the site. Thank you for your information. I get info from a whole lot of sources, most of which I believe are fairly credible, but there clearly are exceptions (as is the case here). The list that I maintain here is only as good as the info I receive and you have made the list stronger now with your contribution. I will remedy the error. Thank you.

Hi There all, i'm new to the site, so i'm just saying hi, and giving a bit of info to update the list that starts this thread.

I do share the DT obsession, and I have a set after many many years of trying. Sadly it is not matching.

DT I is 129
DT II is 329

DT III- VI is 207

I also have as number 207 the following: Black House S/L, Artists Ed Black House, From a Buick 8 S/L, Secretary of Dreams S/L, and Salems Lot S/L and other none 207 S/L's.

I'd certainly be up for swaps if anyone has 207 of I and II so and can be nicely matching, which would be brilliant!.....so feel free to PM me.

Great site and great to see so many other DT obsessives as i've been fascinated with it since 1986 and I saw my name in the index of Douglas E Winters book on King!....

Cheers Mike

I have a very cool signed book from the other chap which says 'from one Michael Whelan to another (this feels very weird!)'......which is cool!...

thanks for the welcome!.

Cheers Mike

Michael Whelan

Mike, welcome to the site and thanks for your contribution.
You neede to get in touch with jemaher here on this site as he owns I and II of #207.

I noticed that you put down as owning #207 III-VI. Did you mistype or do you not own #207 of DT VII? And if you do not own it, why not?

Ah, thats the old mis typed roman numerals gag then - I DO most certainly own VII too..!....

Thanks for the info ref 207 - checking through more of these posts I saw the entries when jemaher managed to get the books, and indeed, asks if anyone knows who owns 207 too......so, hopefully I can encourage a trade of some kind!....

cant see how I would PM him though, but i;m sure it must be possible....

I do not know that answer for sure, but I will ask him and report back here. He indicated that he sold a set when he acquired #1 so intuitively that says he got #1 in the after market. I just asked him how he acquired #1 and from whom (if he can share that info).

Here is the answer I got from Hal regarding set #1:

Hi David, Me and 2 other guys used to go over to Don Grant's house starting in the mid 70s. The 3 of us were Robert E Howard fans and Don was publishing those long before King. One of the 2 guys was the original owner of your #32. I originally had 2 sets but sold 1 set right away. Grant had a friend that helped him with his early publishing and there was an unverified rumor that he had originally owned up to 50 copies of the S&N first DT. The friend offered to sell me the #1 copy in the early 90's but the deal did not go through until several years later. I don't think that he will mind me telling you that his name is Dick Brisson. I know that he does not own a set of DT's at present and still don't know if that rumor was true, Thanks, Hal

I have been compiling the list for roughly 8 years with the help of A LOT of people, many of them here on this site. I remember I started with being able to account for 5 complete sets and about 12 numbers. It grew slowly but surely from there to the list you see today. I freely admit there are likely some mistakes there as I rely on third party information at times, but overall it should be pretty accurate.

The two things that got me started was putting together (the hard way) my first complete set #296 and Stu's (Bett's books) constant reference on his site around 2000 that complete same-number sets were really rare and there may be only a dozen complete sets out there....I wanted to see if that was true. And here we are with just over 50 and still 40% of the numbers unaccounted for. Statistics (through extrapolation of what I have already compiled) would suggest that there are perhaps another 40 complete sets, making 90+ in all out of 500, or roughly 20% of the total are complete, but I suspect that the "low hanging fruit" has already been picked and of the 200 numbers still unaccounted for, there may be only 15-20 complete sets there, making the total 65-75, or 13%-15%. Just my educated guess.

The lower one is far more realistic in today's market. The seller with the higher price is wishing this was 2005 rather than 2008.

Possibly one actually wants to sell, whereas the other only wants to sell if they can fetch a big price.

But that's just my uneducated opinion.

Gretchen, I got it registered for you!

Congrats on the purchase. We may be able to locate the owner of #1 for you. If you would like.

That would be awesome, Karen!!! What do you need me to do? Just name it! Within reason, of course . . . hehe

If we find out who the person is, you send me a letter with your intentions (like you are willing to buy for said amount or willing to trade and have) and I mail it to them. If they are interested, they will contact you. Hopefully they still own it, cause it's strange that they only bought book 1.

OMG I wish I had the money to get a complete set numbered under 500. Just looking through this thread makes me wish I had been smarter and started collecting when I was younger. Maybe one day I will win the lottery and be able to afford a full set.

* goes off to beat self up for not collecting when I was younger

Well, it's official now :) and I hope this doesn't sound like I'm bragging.

It took me a while to work, save and slave for this. With the market the way it's been, it took a lot of thought and 2nd thinking on my part. But I bought DT set complete #432. This used to belong to our very own Gunkslinger (Mike) who sold it to donnacastle (Bret) and now I own the complete numbered set.

Merry Christmas to ME

My wife told me not to expect anything else under the tree.

I need to check with Karen about registering my name to this number at Grant.

Again, I hope this doesn't sound like bragging. I'm just excited :excited:

Again, Thanks Everyone. :grouphug:

I was thinking about sharing the wealth a little to a lucky member here. Now that I have #432. I was thinking about letting someone here take ownership of 5,6, & 7 #1097 registered at Grant at exact publisher price plus shipping so they can get a LSOE.

Before I put this on DTbay....does this sound fair or has the market killed this?

Good question. I think $250 each. It might have been a little less. I think I have $750 in the three signed limited. I purchased and registered all three directly from Grant.

I'm only doing this to help someone here. If I go to Ebay, the price will go up :wtf: :P

Thanks, Ralph. I asked because I'm in sort of the same situation with #678 of V-VII, but I paid a little more than the list price. I've been debating about eBay or DTBay or just asking for PMs! I've also been debating about waiting until I get Gunslinger #64 (I can dream!) to complete my set. Hmmm....

$200, $175 & $225 were the respective issue prices.

Regardless, $750 is a great price - they'd probably go minimum $1000 on eBay.

Gretchen - unless you really need the cash now, hold on to them - that way when you find your Gunslinger you'll be able to make a $4K purchase a $2.5K purchase!

I also have a DTV/VI/VII set, but I'm definitely holding onto VII and would like to hold onto V if I can ... that leaves VI if anyone's interested.

Do we know for a fact that having a limited edition of DT7 assures a person of getting the same numbered copy of LSOE? Or are we still just speculating based on DMG's prior policy?

I hope it's true because then I'd at least have the full story with LSOE to match my set since I really don't have tons of hope that I'll ever find the original Gunslinger #64. :(

The only reason I'm confident that they'll continue that policy - is due to the headache Karen would incur if they didn't. Imagine how many emails/ phone calls Grant would get with requests for numbers ... it'd be suicide!
