Never really was super interested in the majority of Dan's SubPress S/L's, but you better believe I'll be picking up a matching number set of the Hyperion Cantos as it becomes available for preorder.

Thanks for posting pics of your collection, Ari. Nice looking stuff! Especially the lettered editions.

Some nice looking books.
For the past year or so I have had back and forth communications wilth Bill at SubPress about the possibility of a fully restored limted of Summer Of Night and then I read on the Simmons forum about the five new limiteds and still no SON. Suffice to say I was disappointed.

Oh no! That ruined it all><. Why make 15 lettered and ~3 PC's?

My thoughts are that most publishers order a few extra copies of S/L's from the bindery as backups in case books are lost in the mail, defective or whatever to use as replacements. If not needed they might later get the designation "PC."

For a long time I only had this "PC" as I missed the initial sale. Then some kind soul on this site offered to sell me a real lettered one. I'm still grateful, Jerome.

It looks a lot like yours, only it has an "E" on the limitation page instead of a "B." Thought pics would be redundant. It's still sitting snugly in the Simmons case.

Almost ten years ago, every time I came across a copy of Summer of Night, I wondered about the book and wanted to read it. It intrigued me a lot. Then, one day, I finally purchased it and started. The truth is that the first 100 pages were slow, but the book was good. And after page 200/250, I just couldn't drop it and read it all in that same day. Then I read Carrion Confort, which I liked a lot, but I think it has 100 pages more than it should. And then I read Hyperion saga... it's a really wonderful piece, and it was really nice to see that an author I labeled for horror, could write also a great piece of Sci Fi. But it was after Phases of Gravity (one of my favorite books by the author) it has my full admiration. From that moment on I read almost all his books in spanish (I still have to read The Hollow Man) and I'm currently enjoying Flashback, after reading two of his last masterpieces: The terror and Drood (which is my favorite so far). Dan is, in my opinion, one of the best living authors.

I don't understand that expression :orely:

The phrase is an American political expression. The "right wing" is typically thought of as the conservative republican side whereas the "left wing" is the liberal democratic side. I could go on but I don't which to offend anyone or let my own politics seep into my post. Hopefully you get the general idea of the expression from this vague description. :)

As mentioned "Right Wing"= Republican (Conservative) political viewpoints. "Left Wing" = Democrat (Liberal) political viewpoints.
Simmons also is very Pro-Jewish and thus anti-Muslim in his ideas.

I've read Flashback (in the ARC) and found myself a bit turned off by the political views espoused therein. If you've ever looked at the forums on his site, you'll see that his views are the same. Now, I hold myself to be "center right", but the extremes contained in the book didn't appeal to me whatsoever. I had planned on buying the trade edition when it came out, but I've changed my mind. Not one of Simmons' better works, in my opinion.

Not so much the proofs, just some of the books they did. They had a great product line, and I never knew why they went out of business.

They became distracted by other interests and took their eye off the ball. I knew them peripherally as they were from the same town as I am and used the same printer/binder and graphics people I did. I think they did a good job with their books and I referenced their quality/design level when I pitched Second Coming and Sword In The Darkness limiteds to SK.

The first 100 pages of Summer Of Night reminds me of 'Salem's Lot: a very slow build up as we get to know the characters and town and then both books take off. SON was just re-released with a new intro from Dan and that alone is worth the price of admission. If you want to read an excellent coda to SON visit Dan's website and read his two part short story Watching The Presidential Debates in Elm Haven. Subterranean have announced a signed limited of Hyperion:

http://subterraneanpress.com/index.php/2011/08/28/announcing-the-signed-limited-edition-of-hyperion-by-dan-simmons/

Announcing the Signed Limited Edition of HYPERION by Dan Simmons

We’re pleased to announce the signed limited edition of Dan Simmons’s classic space opera, Hyperion. Fans will be thrilled to know that we plan limited editions for the subsequent three novels in the Hyperion Cantos, as well.

Our edition of Hyperion will be an oversize volume, printed on 80# Finch, with a dust jacket and full-color endsheets by John Picacio.

***

First published in 1989, Dan Simmons’s Hugo Award-winning Hyperion is one of the undisputed classics of modern science fiction. The opening movement of a hugely ambitious multi-volume epic, it is both a masterpiece of pure storytelling and a visionary meditation on the future development of the human race.

The narrative takes place some seven hundred years from now, at a time when humanity has left Old Earth behind and has begun to colonize the worlds between the stars. At a critical moment, with interstellar war about to begin, seven travelers are summoned to a pilgrimage on a distant planet called Hyperion, where ancient mysteries are taking on a new and sudden urgency. At the heart of these mysteries are the Time Tombs, enigmatic artifacts that appear to be traveling backward in time, and the savage, barbed creature known as the Shrike.

Included among these seven pilgrims are a soldier, a poet, a scholar, a priest, and a private detective. As they make their way toward their destination, they tell each other stories, transforming the novel into a far-future version of The Canterbury Tales. These varied, highly personal tales form the heart of this extraordinary book. Individually, they offer highly developed examples of narrative art. Collectively, they set the stage for the wonders, terrors, and revelations to come. The result is a remarkable—and durable—accomplishment that remains fresh and exciting more than two decades after its initial appearance. Hyperion, together with its successors, does what only the finest imaginative literature can do: It creates and populates a complex, extravagantly detailed universe more vivid, vital, and consistently enthralling than our own everyday world. Popular fiction just doesn’t get better than this.

Limited: 474 signed numbered hardcover copies: $125

Lettered: 26 signed leatherbound copies housed in a custom traycase: $300

Sub Press recently turned down the opportunity to do a limited of Summer Of Night with bonus material (Banished Dreams, Watching The Presidential Debates In Elm Haven) as well as a limited of Dan's forthcoming novel The Abominable. Another publisher is in converations with Dan's agent to see if something can be worked out. Hopefully it will happen as SON is deserving of a nice limited edition.

Banished Dreams is a chapbook published in 1990 by Roadkill Press consisting of excerpts from an early draft of Summer Of Night. The dream sequences that are included in the chapbook along with the subplots that arose from them were cut from the published version. I haven't checked lately but you could probably find it on eBay or ABE.
As for Watching The Presidential Debates In Elm Haven you can read it at Dan's website. Just click on the News button and select "Message From Dan". Once there click on the index and select October 2008 and you will find part 1. Part 2 can be found in the November 2008 message. Watching The Debates is an excellent coda to SON.

I think Dan tends to get pretty inolved with his limiteds in terms of design and art contributions so he's probably right that his return on time investment isn't very good. That said I'm hopeful things will work out with a different publisher.

From Amazon:

It's 1925, and the desire to summit Mt. Everest has reached a fever-pitch after the disappearance of George Mallory the year before. A young man and his climbing friends, eager to take their shot at the top, accept funding from a grieving mother whose son fell to his death on Mallory's expedition. She is not convinced he is dead, and she wants them to bring him back alive.

Once on the mountain, the climbers discover that the young man's death was no accident--and something he was carrying with him could and will change the course of the 20th century. They also learn that they are not alone on Everest. Someone else--or something else--is up there. And it is stalking them.

A bone-chilling and exquisitely researched story of historical high-climbing suspense, THE ABOMINABLE is Dan Simmons at his best, and it will thrill the many readers who made The Terror a bestseller.

I have been a huge fan and a collector of Simmons for a long time. I have a PC of the lettered edition of Carrion Comfort that I purchased from DreamHaven books over a decade ago. I know that there were problems with Dark Harvest flooding the market with PC copies of the numbered states of their titles, but I have not herd of another copy out there and several large dealers I have talked to have said they can't recall seeing PC copies of the lettered (woody) states of the Dark Harvest books. Does anyone know anything about this state? Or any other PC lettered from them?

Randall Flagg

The PC debacle by Dark Harvest was, as far as I know, limited to the numbered editions. I've not seen a PC lettered for sale, so if there are any, I would have to believe there are substantially fewer than the numbered PCs (of which there are many).

We're pleased to be able to offer one of Dan Simmons's finest creations, the colllection Lovedeath (http://subterraneanpress.com/store/product_detail/lovedeath), as a signed limited edition. Best of all, this book is in stock and ready to ship. (The numbered edition is. The lettered will still take a bit as the traycases need to be manufactured.)
About the Book:
First published in 1993, Lovedeath remains one of Dan Simmons’s most significant accomplishments. In five stories—four novellas and an amazing short novel—Simmons explores the intertwined themes of love and death with wit, intelligence, and grace—and from an astonishing variety of perspectives.
The volume opens with the moving “Entropy’s Bed at Midnight,” a portrait of parental love and anxiety that broadens to become a meditation on the random, frequently absurd hazards of ordinary life. The award-winning “Dying in Bangkok” is a graphic, often deeply unsettling story of vengeance and erotic vampirism set against the flesh markets of Bangkok during the height of the AIDS crisis. “Sleeping with Teeth Women” is a tale of the Lakota Sioux and of a young brave—Hoka Ushte—who embarks on a vision quest that will alter both his own life and the lives of his people. “Flashback,” a precursor to the recent novel of the same name, examines the impact of the eponymous drug that allows its users to recapture—and relive—specific moments from the past. Finally, “The Great Lover” uses the wartime journals of a fictional British poet—James Edwin Rooke—as the basis for a hallucinatory recreation of the Battle of the Somme in 1916. The result is a profoundly imagined, meticulously researched narrative filled with horror, poetry, and indelible images. “The Great Lover” is, beyond doubt, one of Dan Simmons’s greatest creations. It is also one of the finest fictional portraits of the First World War ever put on paper, and it brings this masterful collection to a resonant, unforgettable conclusion.
Limited: 250 signed numbered copies, printed on 80# Finch, fully bound in cloth: $125
Lettered: 26 signed leatherbound copies, housed in a custom traycase: $250

LOVEDEATH was never done by Dark Harvest...you must be thinking about PRAYERS TO BROKEN STONES, which indeed had a Dark Harvest edition. The only HC treatment LOVEDEATH has had was a trade HC from Warner Books.

Ahhh, now I remember. Thanks for correcting me. I do wish they would do some limiteds of Simmons' Joe Kurtz novels - great stuff!

Thanks, Michaël. I ended up buying this proof. I had seen the listing but scanned right by it thinking that I already had it. When I checked my collection after seeing your post I noticed I didn't have it (I was confusing it with Worlds Enough And Time which looks very similar). All of these Simmons proofs by the UK publisher Headline are pretty hard to find and I am glad to be getting this one.

On another topic I am about 100 pages into The Abominable. I have no idea what is going to happen but this is some good shit!!! Excellent writing.

John, how are you liking the book? I'm 60 pages in and I'm struggling a little. (Just before someone calls me a luddite, I love Lucius Shepard and Tim Powers, who are at most times, writers whose works you absolutely have to read slow to fully understand/get.) I think it's all the secondary (and tertiary) names of characters that are making it a slow read. I find myself trying to figure who Simmons is talking about. It's only the first 1/10th of the book but it feels like this one might be a slow burn.

Incidentally, I ended up getting Flashback from the library yesterday and can't put it down. Its pacing is maniacal but it's still not some mindless adventure story.

I finished The Abominable last night. Think Indiana Jones and the Secret Everest Expedition--there's Nazis and spies and a beautiful heroine. There's just barely enough action to keep you plodding through the endless descriptions of mountain climbing gear, clunky exposition, and the constant up and back and up and back from each camp they have to establish on their way up the mountain. Things get moving the in the last 1/4 of the book, but it takes a hell of a long time to get there. The introduction where "Dan Simmons" tells how he met the main character while researching another book, then a decade later came into possession of a box of notebooks that contain the story is awkward and completely unnecessary, IMO. Why does Book I start each chapter with a pulled quote and use present tense, then Book II use dated journal entries, then Book III switch to past tense and numbered chapters? I think Simmons is at the point where he's beyond editing or rewriting. In the end, you've got an overlong, mess of a book that will try your patience.

There is an explanation for the change of tense in the letter accompanying the journals sent to Simmons. I liked this book quite a bit -- more than The Terror, in fact, though I may be a minority voice on that point.

I saw his explanation. I just didn't think it was satisfactory. I kept asking during the first 2/3s why, if this is supposedly the written recollection of a 90 year old narrator, is it written in present tense? It made no sense. I liked The Terror quite a bit more than this one.

I finished The Abominable a few minutes ago. I think I liked it much more than some of the others who have posted. I also enjoyed the technical parts about mountain climbing and didn't find them boring at all. Perhaps it was because I know next to nothing about mountain climbing and it was all new and fresh to me. I am somewhat afraid of heights and some of the climbing scenes really had me squirming in my chair. I thought it was a great read.

My only complaint is that there were no maps. I found myself on the internet looking at photos and maps of Everest frequently to get it fixed in my mind where the scenes were taking place. But this had a benefit in that it led me to reading about the Mallory and Irvine attempt in 1924. I thought Simmons was masterful in taking what is known of that climb and weaving the actual details into this story. Just brilliant, IMO. I thought the same thing when I researched the failed attempt of the Erebus and the Terror and how Simmons wove the facts into his fictional story The Terror. I think Simmons is a pretty special talent. I really liked this book a lot.

I'm warming up to it. I dove into The Abominable right after Flashback and The Crook Factory and I think that was what made me enjoy it a little less than I thought I would. Those books move fast. I'm not back-pedalling. Sometimes you can get more (or less) enjoyment out of the same book under different circumstances.

He posted a picture of his stack of research material for The Abominable on his website. You have to respect that sort of commitment to craft no matter what. I'll probably end up doing the same thing you did-I'll try to get a clearer picture of the scenery in my head. I looked up more information on Hemingway after I finished The Crook Factory and ended up admiring and respecting the man. And adding a few of his books to the library.

The premise for this novel sounds interesting.
I believe Dan Simmons is an extremely talented and unpredictable author. That said I have struggled with many of his books, including The Abominable, but always commit to finishing them as I have an appreciation for his pedagogical nature. I just finished Darwin's Blade (very entertaining) and aim to tackle The Crook Factory next.

The Crook Factory is in my top 5 DS books (first four are Hyperion books). Agreed on The Abominable. I liked the book but at times it felt like a how-to manual more than a novel.

The Fifth Heart is a no-brainer for me. Dan Simmons and Sherlock Holmes. It can't possibly be bad.

Interesting how Simmons' fans like different books. Personally the Hyperion books are my least favorite (and I've only read the first two) probably because I am not much of a science fiction fan. And I had to start Crook Factory twice because I gave up on it the first time. I'm pretty sure I like Abominable more than most because I absolutely loved every page of it. Currently rereading Summer of Night and I like it just as much the second time through.

We took a family vacation to the Florida Keys last month and after visiting Hemingway's house I felt compelled to finally read some of his work and The Crook Factory is part of my self imposed assignment. I will likely struggle with it as I have with actual Hemingway!
As for Summer Of Night it is one of my top 5 favorite books. Although heavily influenced (much to the author's denial) by IT, I find SON a more compelling and better written story. I also enjoy the way Simmons has woven many of the SON characters into his other novels. If you haven't done so read Banished Dreams (excised material from the original SON manuscript that was published as a chapbook) as well as Watching The Presidential Debates in Elm Haven parts 1 & 2 in the October and November 2008 Message from Dan section on his website. A very nice coda to the novel. Too late in the process I suggested to Dan Simmons that both Banished Dreams and the website story be included in the SON reprint from a few years ago. Sadly a follow up plan to a publish a limited edition of SON has fallen by the wayside.

I really love Simmon's Hyperion books, all four of them, and the two part Ilium and Olympos are equally outstanding sic-fi books. As for horror, Carrion Comfort is one of my absolute favorite books of all time - wonder take on the vampire genre. Summer of Night and its quasi sequel, Children of Night are also fine horror entries. The Hollow Man and Song of Kali both brought me to tears, though for different reasons. And if you enjoy hard-boiled detective fiction like I do, then dive right into Hardcase, Hard Freeze, and Hard as Nails - right up with Dennis Lehane. You will notice that I do not have as many entries form his later novels - I liked The Terror, but overall, I think that Dan has gone a little downhill with age. Just one man's opinion.

I'm probably one of the very few, but Phases of Gravity is one of my favorite books by Dan. Drood and Summer of Night would be the first ones. Sub Press to do limited of The Fifth Heart...

The Fifth Heart by Dan Simmons

We've been lucky enough to gain permission to publish the signed, limited edition of Dan Simmons' new novel, The Fifth Heart, an epic length thriller in the vein of Drood and The Terror.

Our edition will feature an oversize 7*10 trim size, sewn binding, and be housed in a custom slipcase. We're still consulting with Dan on finding just the right artist for the book.

The Fifth Heart has classic written all over it, as you'll see from the description. It has already garnered starred reviews from Publishers Weekly and Booklist.

About the Book:

Paris, 1893: On a bridge above the Seine, two figures, each bent on suicide, unexpectedly encounter one another. One is the great American novelist Henry James, whose personal and professional fortunes have dramatically declined. The other is Sherlock Holmes, who has an unusual reason for wanting to die. He has come to believe that he may not be real, that he may just be some “scribbler’s” fictional creation. This chance encounter at a vulnerable moment will have enormous ramifications for both men.

Abandoning thoughts of suicide, the two make their way to America, where the fastidious James finds himself caught up in a violent, frequently lethal world he could never have imagined. A pair of interconnected investigations dominates that world. The first concerns the supposed suicide of Clover Adams, wife of historian Henry Adams and member of an elite social circle called The Five Hearts. The second involves a vast, overarching conspiracy which, if successful, will affect the fates of entire nations. For both Holmes and his unlikely partner, the path to personal redemption leads through these two very different mysteries.

Seamlessly combining melodrama and metaphysical speculation with a brilliantly detailed portrait of Gilded Age America, The Fifth Heart is something truly special: a novel of depth and character that is also a world-class entertainment. Colorful, gripping, and ultimately quite moving, it is a formidable addition to a unique—and irreplaceable—body of work.

Limited: 500 signed numbered oversize copies, housed in a custom slipcase: $125

Lettered: 26 signed deluxe bound copies, housed in a custom traycase: $500

From Publishers Weekly (Starred Review):

“In Paris in 1893, Sherlock Holmes and Henry James join forces in this outstanding novel from Simmons, who has concocted something far from the usual pastiche, with a historical figure standing in for Dr. Watson… Simmons (Drood) knows the Holmes canon and uses that expertise in the service of a highly original reimagining of the beloved sleuth.”

From Booklist (Starred Review):

“Like several of Simmons' earlier novels, including The Abominable (2013) and Drood (2009), his latest is a riveting mixture of historical fact and fiction. The year is 1893. Henry James and Sherlock Holmes travel together to America to solve the mystery surrounding the death of socialite Clover Adams (whom, some say, James would later use as his inspiration for his novels Daisy Miller and The Portrait of a Lady). But the book isn't just for Holmes' fans—it's a solidly constructed, beautifully told mystery; a portrait of one of the nineteenth century's most important writers; and an intriguing blend of fact and fantasy.”

It has received very good reviews so far.
I thought DS had sworn off of limited editions. A few years ago he was bemoaning the amount work he had to put into them vs. the small financial return. I think the workload complaint is partly due to his desire to control art and design of the books. Maybe this will rekindle the possibility of a Summer Of Night limited.

I'm torn on whether or not to get the S/L of THE FIFTH HEART. I enjoyed a couple of his recent ones -- DROOD and, especially, THE TERROR -- but a few others like ABOMINABLE and BLACK HILLS have left me cold. I'd hate to spend the $$ to get the S/L of a book that is much more like the latter books than the former books. Just not sure I'm in the mood to gamble.

That's an accurate title for the novel, too. Been meaning to re-read this one lately. I absolutely loved it when it came out. Simmons went from strength to strength for me back then when he was starting out. He is, perhaps, a much better "writer" now, but those first 5 or 6 books had such energy driving them. Not unlike King, I guess.

FREAK SHOW
edited by F. Paul Wilson

From the Horror Writers of America (the creators of UNDER THE FANG anthology) comes a fantastic spectacle of the inhuman, the superhuman, and the all-too human guaranteed to both appeal and enthrall.

WELCOME TO THE FREAK SHOW!!!

Features original stories by Rex Miller, Brad Strickland, Nancy Kilpatrick, Steven Sprull, and others.

Freak Show is a superbly put together novel, each chapter written by a different author and following a main storyline; like George R. R. Martin's Wild Cards series. F. Paul Wilson has done a brilliant job of editing this strange foray into the world of the Circus Freak.

With authors like himself (F. Paul Wilson), Richard Lee Byers, Dan Simmons, Rex Miller, Nancy Kilpatrick, and many others each dedicating their talents to a single chapter of the Ozymandias Traveling Circus and Oddity Emporium's journey across the US, focusing on a particular freak and his particular talent

Wilson’s own franchise character REPAIRMAN JACK makes an appearance as well. (This appearance is the basis for Wilson’s THE LAST RAKOSH)

Stories follow the travels of the Ozymandias Traveling Circus and Oddity Emporium's journey across the US,

Winter Quarters by F. Paul Wilson
Okefenokee Swamp, GA by Brad Strickland
Athens, GA by Gregory Nicoll
Sikeston, MO by Rex Miller
Leesville, LA by Nancy Kilpatrick
Bois D'Arc, TX by Scott Cupp

FREAK SHOW
Edited by F. PAUL WILSON

This is an interesting book. I enjoyed the concept and the stories. Elm Haven is bit like Simmons' Castle Rock. He has based two novels there (Summer Of Night and A Winter Haunting) and has threaded the town into a few more. Wouldn't mind him returning there one more time.

Before I put it up on ebay, I have a signed Dark Harvest copy of "Carrion Comfort". It comes in a custom wooden case (used by Dark Harvest for a lettered edition).
Make me a mutually beneficial offer.

I remember someone posted some links on where signed copies of The Fifth Heart could be purchased but I can't find the post. I really would like to buy one before he goes to the event so I can get an inscribed copy.

I don't see anything about an inscription on PP's website. Should I add a note when I check out and that's it?

Hmmmm - I can't remember whether I ordered an inscribed or flat-signed copy. . . . if inscriptions are available, I'd prefer one for sure. Please let us know if you're able to request an inscription!

Sounds right to me. I hated seeing the old SKEMERS go. We had some great times then.

Bev - yes, I'm still a member of SKEMERs on Facebook, but the group is moribund; nothing at all like its glory days of newsletter e-mails!!

Sadly, Simmons is not going to be anywhere near me (I live in New York). . . not even Jersey! Ugh. Very jealous of you guys who live out west!! Had to get my signed copy of FH via mail order.

Yeah, New Zealand is a great place to live. Not so great to be a book collector - the shipping and duty costs are astronomical!! Just had a look at your collection - it is amazing :).

Jules - Thanks!!! Still missing a couple of key Simmons items though. New Zealand - super-exotic to us here in the USA! I can imagine how much it costs to have books shipped. Receiving books here from the UK, for example, shipping is $25 - $30 for a single book sometimes. Ugh.

Bev - NIIIIIIICE!! Front row! How was the the talk? Looking forward to my signed copy from Poisoned Pen, but it's no substitute for actually being there. Also pre-ordered the numbered & lettered S/L of Fifth Heart as well. . .

He was entertaining -- he read the dinner party scene from The Fifth Heart after talking a bit, then fielded some questions. In addition to TFH, I had him sign my ARC of Drood and my World Horror Convention program book that has an excerpt from his unpublished novel Vastation. The latter is especially special to me, since I wrote the appreciation of Simmons for the book.

NoahM
03-25-2015, 06:07 AM
Bev - that's AWESOME! I think it's great that Simmons will sign other stuff as well. Was there a limit? Most book signings I attend, the writer will sign as many books as you want. When I saw Joe Hill, the bookstore said there was a 3-book limit, but Hill very generously offered to sign as many books as people brought. That's the one downside to King signings - he only signs the current book. Surely due to time & numbers - the poor guy would be swamped otherwise.
Anyway, that's great. Can you share a photo of the WHC programme??

Bev Vincent
03-25-2015, 06:49 AM
The store rules were The Fifth Heart + two older titles on the first pass. If you had more books, you could go to the back of the line once everyone else had been called.

I'll share a better picture of the WHC book later -- here's the cover for now:

Bev - nice!!! Can't find a copy of that for sale anywhere!! That's great that Simmons was cool with people cycling through a few times to get more than 3 signed books.
