I'm not sure if there are many fans of Mr. Tolkien here, but aside from Stephen King, he is one of my All-Time favorite Authors!!!!! I like a few other authors as well, but few can be said to have defined a Genre and a generation the way that Tolkien did.

I make it a yearly ritual to re-read the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit each and every year. I wish I could afford to do better, but I have a few fine collectible editions to share with all of you. If, you are so inclined:

For what it's worth, I have commissioned another display case for my very old and valuable "The Hobbit" from our own "Dolso" who made the LOTR display case. He does just amazing work!!!!!!! It is "worlds" better to be able to admire your collectible books from a display case, than stick them on a shelf, IMHO.

Keep watching this thread for more items!!!!!

Thx for looking!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Merlin- I couldn't agree with you more in regards to Tolkien. Reading The Hobbit early on in life shaped my reading habits at a young age and made me the SK fan I am today.

I first read the Lord of the Rings trilogy back in the early '60s when there were "dueling" paperback printings being done, by Ace and by Ballantine. I bought the Ace books (which, it turned out, were the unauthorized editions) because they were cheaper than the Ballantine ones. I literally read those books to pieces.

Have you ever seen these copies of the books from The Folio Society? - http://www.foliosociety.com/book/BZA4/lord-of-the-rings-and-hobbit

You can get them all for 19.95 if you join for 1 year and agree to buy a few more books. They look kinda nice.

They look nice however does anyone have any comments on this place? Do you get the intro books after you buy their other books, what is the quality of the books, is there any actual value from this publisher? Don't know so I'm just asking.

By the way thanks Eric!

The Folio books are really nice. I like the unique cover designs/materials. I've been a member before (to get the Tolkien deal), and was very happy with the membership & books. You get the introductory books right away, and agree to purchase 5 or 6 other books from them (at around $40- $60 each) over the next year. Then you are done. The best way to see if it would work out for you is to look through the whole online available books catalog and see if you can find 5 or 6 books in there that you would be interested in. If so (and you should- there are always a few good horror titles in there), then I say go for it.

There is a set of all five books from the Folio Society (adds The Silmarillion) on ABE right now for $225. I'm not sure how much you would spend over the length of the membership agreement but if you just wanted the Tolkein books that might be the way to go rather than join. They recently did an edition of DRACULA that I wanted but bought on eBay rather than joining.

Some beautiful books on show in this thread! As it was for many other people, it was reading Tolkien in my early teens that shaped my reading tastes. My LOTR are the UK 2nd edition 6th impression. Fold out maps at the back of each book.

Maybe one of you Tolkien collectors can tell me something about this set I bought about 6 years ago on eBay. The three books were published in 1962 and came in a slipcase that housed all three. FELLOWSHIP is a 12th printing and the other two are both 9th printings. The slipcase has seen better days but did a good job of protecting the books. The dust jackets are darkened on the spines but pretty good elsewhere (price-clipped, though). The books themselves are fine and maps are present.

Is this set worth anything? Guesses?

Carlos-

There are a few sets of these on abebooks right now (unless any of these are yours) and they are asking for between $490 and $1200. I'm not sure if there selling but that's what is being asked.

I absolutely love the stories, but am by no means an expert on collecting them. I have 2 or 3 dealers I trust and use for advice on editions. One thing I can tell you is that if you think King collecting is complicated, its virtually nothing compared to Tolkien!!!! Did you know that LOTR is second in book sales to only the Holy Bible????

It's a good idea to get an expert involved before making a purchase or sale. There are just so many intricacies involving the publishers and impressions.

I, personally, only collect LOTR and The Hobbit books. I also have "the Silmarillon and a couple others, but to me the first four are "The Collectibles" for the most part. Make no mistake, Tolkien was a "Genius" when it came to writing, if only for his attention to detail and history!!!!

Since I have acquired this awesome case for my Edition of "The Hobbit", I now have a very nice slipcase available for free (Pay the Shipping). If anyone out there has a similar edition (About 7 7/8" high) and wants this case, just PM me and its yours!!!!! It has the "Tolkien Crest" on the side and is Green in color. Rather give it to a dedicated collector and I'm not interested in selling it.

I have a U.S. First of "The Silmarillon", but yours looks to be a UK, which is an earlier edition. The CP would help if you have a pic of it. Tolkien editions are notoriously difficult to identify given all the re-printings, but your's look to be very early from what I can see.

So this isn't a collecting question as much as it is a reading question. I am about 120 pages into Lord of the Rings, and Iam completely bored. I can only read a few pages at a time before I have to put the book down. Am I rushing to judgment? So many people say LOTR is the greatest thing ever...I'm not seeing it, at least not yet.

Well. not positive as far as where 120 pages puts you in the story, but you have to get past "Rivendell" before it really picks up. A truly wonderful tale!!!!

Oh I know what you mean, Tom Bomadil was "brutal" to me. All those poems and songs!!! Arrghhhh!!! "Weathertop" is cool and the arrival at "Rivendell" as well. It's mostly "gravy" from here on out!!!!!

Yes, do continue!

It's all rather Hobbit light until Rivendell. Complete the story and then you will know if it was worthwhile.

Tom Bombidil is an enigma in the story, the council of Elrond is probably one of my favourite chapters ever. It opens up the whole story.

In fairness. It's overall a marvelous story, but there are parts that sorta drag.

The part i thought that dragged was, fellowship of the ring:)
But a neccesary evil to get the desired effect from the rest of the story.

I always assumed that the pacing of the book was deliberate, as in the start was slow to show off the lazy relaxed lifestyle the Hobbits lived, as opposed to after Rivendell when there is a genuine menace in the air and the mood takes a turn for the worst.

On a side note, what did people think of 'The Council Of Elrond'?

All the information was almost an overload for my brain but I absolutely adored that chapter. Your view of Middle Earth just expanded at an instant. You realised that this wasn't just a hobbit problem but something that would effect everybody.

Can you tell I love Tolkien?:lol1:

For your enjoyment, these are my copies, maybe less rare but I'd say no less loved. These are paperback Ballentine editions of my parents that I have from the mid 70s that I remember as a child of 6 or 7, really reading first as a 6th grader (and not understanding much of), and are still my reading copies read every few years (although I treat them quite a bit more carefully now.

Here in The Hobbit (assuming that I got these URLs in the right order), I tried to get a futile family tree to try to keep the names straight. For some reason, I kept merging Bilbo & Frodo into the same hobbit, not understanding this was a prologue of essentially a different cast of characters.

Well, as I said I was "Laid up", but after Fellowship I was under the covers with a flashlight!!!! Plus there was no cable at the time. "Star Trek", "Twilight Zone" and "Outer Limits" were about it for me mostly. This was like '74-'75. Also, there was no "TV" like the one in your mind. Remember that???? I read a LOT of books by flashlight in those days!!!! I could literally devour them!!!! LOTR was almost like that "Where were you when Kennedy was Shot"? thing. You just have to remember the first time you read LOTR. right? AWESOME book!!!!! I read "The Hobbit" and Silmarillion" after.

Those Ballentine editions came out at the same time as a set of Ace editions (which were unauthorized). I ended up buying the Ace editions anyway, because the Ballentine editions were $.95 while the Ace ones were $.75. Back then, it really made a difference. I just wish I still had them (they were destroyed when my basement flooded.)

Dude, we all know that the Lord of the Rings provided the inspiration for every single stoner/road trip movie ever: two guys who smoke a lot of weed without shoes or a car have to walk a huge distance because they knicked some geezer's ring and have really pissed him off as a result. Along the way, they meet a weird guy who loves to fight in a bar (ok, pub), hang out with some posh dudes before one of them tags along, meet an angry dwarf, and then some weird, disgusting, mega skinny junkie, along the way singing their arses off and being lead by some hippie who thinks he's a "wizard". It's the greatest stoner story ever written!

I think it's time for a Tolkien re-read.

I have a couple of books about the Beatles to get through first, then I promised a certain bear that I would read pet Semetary, then it's time to revisit middle Earth.

I've just thought; How many 'companion' books to the series do people own?

By that I mean anything to do with Tolkien really. I have:

A Readers Companion by Wayne G. Hammond and Christina Scull
The Children Of Hurin
The Silmarillion
Unfinished tales
The Road Goes On And Ever On by Brian Sibley
There And Back Again by Brian Sibley
A Biography by Humphrey Carpenter
The Letters by Humphrey Carpenter
The Road To Middle Earth by Tom Shippey
The Complete Companion by J.E.A. Tyler
The History of Middle Earth by Christopher Tolkien
The Atlas Of Middle Earth by Karen Wynn Fonstad
Plus various visual companions to the films and ' The Frodo Franchise' but I can't remember the authors as they are in the loft!

So a friend of my cousin inherited a small collection of Tolkien books from his father with two standout pieces among them.
One is a signed copy of The Hobbit, the other is one of the books that Tolkien used for his research while writing LOTR. It is literally filled with his hand written notes throughout and "still smells of his pipe smoke."

He's been thinking long and hard and is considering selling one, or both, to help build the college fund for his kids.
I know the Hobbit was appraised at least $8,000. I don't believe it's a first printing or it would probably be higher.

My understanding is that both have been authenticated by the head of the Tolkien collection at Marquette University in Milwaukee.

I'd have a very hard time parting with either of those if I were him.

Tolkien was an early work, very distinctive in its mode, completed in 1926: he returned to it later to make hasty corrections, but seems never to have considered its publication. This edition is twofold, for there exists an illuminating commentary on the text of the poem by the translator himself, in the written form of a series of lectures given at Oxford in the 1930s; and from these lectures a substantial selection has been made, to form also a commentary on the translation in this book.

From his creative attention to detail in these lectures there arises a sense of the immediacy and clarity of his vision. It is as if he entered into the imagined past: standing beside Beowulf and his men shaking out their mail-shirts as they beached their ship on the coast of Denmark, listening to the rising anger of Beowulf at the taunting of Unferth, or looking up in amazement at Grendel’s terrible hand set under the roof of Heorot.

But the commentary in this book includes also much from those lectures in which, while always anchored in the text, he expressed his wider perceptions. He looks closely at the dragon that would slay Beowulf ‘snuffling in baffled rage and injured greed when he discovers the theft of the cup’; but he rebuts the notion that this is ‘a mere treasure story’, ‘just another dragon tale’. He turns to the lines that tell of the burying of the golden things long ago, and observes that it is ‘the feeling for the treasure itself, this sad history’ that raises it to another level. ‘The whole thing is sombre, tragic, sinister, curiously real. The “treasure” is not just some lucky wealth that will enable the finder to have a good time, or marry the princess. It is laden with history, leading back into the dark heathen ages beyond the memory of song, but not beyond the reach of imagination.’

Sellic Spell, a ‘marvellous tale’, is a story written by Tolkien suggesting what might have been the form and style of an Old English folk-tale of Beowulf, in which there was no association with the ‘historical legends’ of the Northern kingdoms.

This treasure cam from a good friend "Down Under", who may feel free to disclose himself, but it will always be special to me since it came from "Hobbiton" as I like to refer to it, much to his chagrin I suppose. LOL

Hi all. I enjoy popping in here from time to time and seeing what you all are acquiring. I started out collecting Tolkien, but don't really do much anymore. Still, it's a fun world, indeed.

Here (if I'm lucky enough to get this right- and it would be sheer luck) is a photobucket link to some Tolkien books I've stashed away over the years and am getting ready to part with. If anyone's interested- feel free to pm me and let me know. Or, just enjoy checking out the pics (which aren't very good, I'm afraid- took them a long time ago). Note- the only exception is the signed/limited Silmarillion. Just not ready to part with that one yet. That sucker is very rare. Anyway, carry on!

Hi there!
What do you think of this set and Price and edition (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lord-of-the-Rings-trilogy-TRR-Tolkien-3-book-box-set-hardcover-2nd-ed-1965-/380925423164pt=Antiquarian_Collectible&hash=item58b0ecae3c)?
I like it that the books have some years on them

(it is for the boxed HC set from 1965 2nd edition)

I know these don't have a whole lot of monetary value, but they mean a lot to me personally. I recently found a complete set of the first edition Ballantine paperbacks from 1965 in decent condition at a used book store. As you all know these were the first authorized paperbacks released (after the infamous Ace pirated editions). These were the ones that launched The Lord of the Rings into the stratosphere! In the same haul, I also found the first paperback edition of The Hobbit and The Tolkien Reader (both also Ballantine from 1966). In all my used book travels, I've very rarely come across these (and then they are usually in pretty bad shape). Usually the earliest editions of LotR you'll see are the Ballantine second editions from 1973. None of these are first printings, but I can't tell you how great it was to find these in the wild. I'm so excited to have these on my shelf!

Ironically, I am pretty sure that those are the PB's that I was given the first time I read LOTR back in high school!!! LOL Now, I try to collect the earliest HC printings I can afford and have since developed an unreasonable avoidance of any PB book, but that's a story for another time. Regardless, I can appreciate your joy for obtaining these personal treasures. They look to be in very nice condition!!!

My sincere congratulations to you!!!:clap::clap:

I read the Ace editions when they first came out. They were cheaper ($.75 vs $.95) and that .20 meant a lot back then. Alas, they are long gone now.

Thought I'd share a couple from my personal collection.

I've been collecting Tolkien since the 1970s; THE SILMARILLION was the first book that I bought, new, on day of issue. In collecting THE HOBBIT and THE LORD OF THE RINGS, I've never had the means to invest in high-quality early editions, so I've done the best that I can. While I've owned several variations of the limited editions of both, when I pared down my collections during harder times, those were among the first to go.

Starting with THE HOBBIT today. Both of these were purchased within the last ten years, both cost me less than $10.

This is a 22nd printing, the only second edition copy that I've ever owned. The jacket is... bad, but from all I can tell it's correct for the printing.

http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e306/KNOMEOR/JRRT--HOBBIT-22nd_zps4cca9490.jpg

Also somewhat vintage, this 28th printing. It has the 1966 copyright and the ISBN on the copyright page, dating it after 1969; there is an inscription on the ffep dated 1972. As it happens, 1972 was the year I first read the book, so that adds a bit to the vibe.

I have a similar DJ but an earlier printing. When I really started going after these books the editions, the printings, etc are enough to drive you bat shit!!! LOL After awhile I just focused on the dates. I earmarked a couple thousand and bought the ones in my collection and then called it a collection. My most prized is "The Hobbit" UK 8th Impression, VF condition. TLOTR books are all U.S. early editions, 1958 or so, I think. Then I spent a few hundred on the Dolso cases, which to me, really make them something to look at and be proud of. If, you really get into these four books you can go bankrupt really fast!!! I think there are pics of mine in this thread, but if not they are in my collection thread, if you care to look. I have a 1/1 US Silmarillon, which I treasure as well. Then a few "special editions" and a couple peripheral ones like "Bilbo's last Song".

Great to see another, Tolkien collector here as well!!!

And FELLOWSHIP...

Was looking back over this thread, and noted a comment about a collection/part of a collection lost to a flood. I lost my TWO TOWERS that way, and I've never owned a US or UK first of RETURN OF THE KING. These are nice to have (a 13th and 15th, respectively); the only better I had, I gave away before I understood the arcana of collecting Tolkien.

Nice copies !

I've seen this from Stephen Spignesi, today, on facebook :

On June 3, 1954, JRR Tolkien wrote to his British publisher Allen & Unwin about the dust jacket proofs for the soon-to-be-published "The Lord of the Rings":
I wish that I could say that I approve of the proofs of the jacket, herewith returned. I do not. I think they are very ugly indeed. But to be effective I should have been given an opportunity of criticism at an earlier stage.….I tell you what I think, since I am asked: tasteless and depressing. But surely asking my opinion is a formality. I do not suppose that any of my criticisms could be met without serious delay. I would rather have the things as they are than cause any more delay. But if this can be done without delay, I would like a different type for the title-lettering at least (on the page; the spine is passable).

I drool every time I see pictures of those early Hobbit and Lord of the Rings hardcovers! What a thrill it must be to have those in your collection (whatever the printing # may be). I dug out my old copy of Karen Wynn Fonstad's The Atlas of Middle Earth (1981) the other day. I remember buying it with my own money just after it came out when I was 11. My book handling habits then were apparently not as refined as they are now. ;)

Hate to say but it is only worth $30 - $35 You can still buy it new from B&N at price of $35. It's really "pretty" though and I do like it but probably will not become valuable until someone make a new Brown colored copy lol we now have gold and Green what could be next.

Tolkien and The Hobbit were my first love when it came to literature. I read it first in grade 5, and read it several times since. I read The Lord of the Rings for the first time throughout high school. The Hobbit was also the first book I ever collected, though not specifically collectible versions, just random paperbacks with different art. I've expanded my collection a bit, but mostly have moved onto collecting other authors. Would love to get some of Tolkien's Easton Press editions as well as an early copy of The Hobbit one day.

This is the first copy of The Hobbit I had read, I'd borrowed it from the library in Grade 5, and years later bought it from them for $0.50, the art still captivates me. Would love to have a nice edition of this one.

And a first edition Silmarillion that I grabbed for $2 at a book sale:

It has a publication date of 1977, has two print errors; one on p.330 and one on p.352. Don't recall the where the errors are specifically, though I obviously knew when I took this picture.

I also love the Bakshi film. Though it doesn't quite hold the same place in my heart as the Rankin & Bass productions, or his later collaboration with Frank Frazetta; Fire & Ice, it's still a fantastic flick and imaginative rendition of Tolkien's work. The soundtrack is great too, snagged the DLP for cheap at a record sale and love to spin it every now and again. Hope it wasn't supposed to come with a book, like the beautiful edition of The Hobbit DLP.

That's a bit of a rough copy, Shac. Bear in mind, I am no expert, but it looks to be a 33rd U.S. edition. I have an 8th edition that went for north of $800. Are there maps included? I do have a link to a very cool dealer that can help steer you in the right direction. He was very helpful and informative with me. So does anyone know how to tell editions on Tolkien? I just passed up a set of 2nd edition books (gold orange and purple) becausebecause I could not confirm them. Did they make a BCE edition of those in the slipcase? These had no price on the DJ and the map in the back was attached to the boards rather than their own page like I've seen. FoTR was a 12th printing and CP page looked good but there was also a 13th printing there that had a $9.95 price and the map on its own page.
Any info would be great!

Thanks for the information. The jackets weirded me out and I agree with your description that they were BC Jackets but I was sure the books were actual books due to the Copyright Page, but then the maps... I should have picked it up. It was a 12/11/11 as well and only $45 but I couldn't bring myself to throw money at something I wasn't 100% on. Hell maybe the set that was 12/11/11 was a one off that didn't have prices originally who knows, you could have something rare in itself. Maybe Bruce or Bill might have additional info from their findings?

For anyone interested this is what I received from David at Tolkien Bookshelf.

It sounds like you have figured out the differences already. There was indeed a Book Club Set of the Lord of the Rings that was published concurrently with the 2nd US Trade Edition. Usually the Book Club Editions are not quite as nice or are made with lower quality paper, but these are virtually identical to the trade editions. The only difference is no price on the dustjackets, a small blind stamp on the back boards (lower corner), and the slipcases seem to be covered with a duller paper, doesn't shine quite as much and may have a tendency to fade a bit more. Also as you noted, the maps are placed differently, but I have seen some that were placed the same as the trade editions. It is not too unusual to find sets that may be mixed, as there were so many printed, and with people replacing lost or damaged copies, invariably there was some mixing and matching involved. So if you are looking for a nice set, I've found that the Book Club Edition may be found at a lower price, without giving up very much at all, comparatively speaking. If you have any other questions, feel free to contact me.

Very good information if you are planning on buying a set.

Picked this up at a Friends of the Library book sale recently ($5). Lord of the Rings + The Hobbit Ballantine Second Edition paperbacks box set (gold foil), issued between 1973 and 1983. All are printings from Feb. 1977. FotR, TTT and RofK are NF condition, The Hobbit is VG. The slipcase is a little dinged, but not in terrible shape.

These are great because these are the first paperbacks to feature Tolkien's own cover art (Barbara Remington did the covers for the Ballantine First Edition paperbacks). Tolkien also did the Heraldic symbols that appear on the slipcase of this box set (Elwe, Luthien Tinuviel, Finwe, Feanor, Idril Celebrindal, and Earendil). There is also a symbol called "Numenorean Title" that appears at the top of the slipcase.

Really excited to picked this up (it appears this thing is worth ~ $50). I now have the first three Lord of the Rings Ballantine paperback editions, most in NF condition. I don't think I'll be picking up any of the other (later) Ballantine editions. I don't care for the covers of those (and my overall paperback collection generally ends around the mid-80's).
