On my Gaiman wish list are some of the books that Eric shows above, specifically the S/L's of NEVERWHERE, AMERICAN GODS and ADVENTURES IN THE DREAM TRADE. I am drooling over his collection.

His collection is awesome indeed. I really didn't mean to slight it, I love all the S/Ls, especially American Gods.

With yours though, I was especially blown away by all of the sigs on the trade editions and the doodles too. I don't think I've ever seen a Gaiman doodle before. They were really cool!

Random thought: Someone needs to do an over the top edition of Good Omens, really, really soon. I'd buy the hell out of that, so to speak. I don't know if it's my appreciation of Pratchett too, but especially I love that book. It also could be because that is the first time I ever read Neil though, as well.

Its all good. I didn't post the pics to be in competition with anyone. Patrick has some great books there. It is great to see copies of books that I might want to add down the road. I have a few more in the mail to me as we speak (including some not on the list above), so once I get them I will surely display pics.

I like the books from Sub Press. They don't compare to the HH editions, but they are nice. I was going to preorder Smoke and Mirrors, but it says it is a year behind already and it is not listed on its "coming soon" list, so I didn't want to tie up any funds waiting years for a new book.

And Patrick, wait until you get your HH copy of Anansi Boys. It is one beautiful production.

Anansi Boys (I wish I knew the exact details of this book. It was produced specifically for Ottakar's Bookstore in the UK. It is not numbered, and I have read that there are anywhere between 1000-2000 copies. My copy is signed by NG on the FFEP. I have read that all of these are signed, but I can't find definitive proof of that. Still a nice book, with silver gilt on the page edges)

Eric, I love looking at your Gaiman collection- your pictures are absolutely stunning! Even though I have most of these books, I've never seen them look so good- even in person! What are you using? Please say it's some crazy-expensive camera, and not one of those "regular" digital ones (like I have and can't seem to get really good pictures from).

Thanks for the kind words. As for the carpet, well, my office carpet is extremely old. It has no more fluff to it, so if I stand something up on it, it usually stays still. My camera rig is a Nikon D40 with an SB400 flash. I bounce the flash to the side off of a white wall, so it sends the light back to the picture without aiming it directly at the book, so I don't get flash spots in the picture. I then use Adobe Lightroom for some post-processing. I'm certainly no photo pro, but I know enough to do what I need to do.

I just have the one signed by Gaiman. I wasn't planning on really picking this book up, but it was cheap and I couldn't justify spending the extra money for the artist signature.

Yes, my copy has the Reader's Copy, with the same limitation number on the title page.

Yeah, this is a pretty strange situation. McKean seems to have always been a reliable designer. His twitter stream indicates that he's been busy with quite a few other projects over the last year or so. I've been a fan for a very long time, going back to the early Sandman days, but at this point I'd welcome giving it over to someone else.

Those are nice. I think once I pay the taxes I might take the plunge and get some Gaiman S/Ls. They'll look nice next to Absolute Sandman editions and Taverns of the Dead S/L. I loved Neverwhere (although the TV show was seriously lacking), American Gods and Anansi Boys.

Coraline - I guess you could call this a "gift" edition. It is not signed or numbered, but the limitation page states that only 4000 copies exist. A special plate by Dave McKean is included, along with some additional stuff, like copies of notebook pages, etc.

This particular special edition of Coraline was put together by the comic book, toy, gaming, & collector card market distributor, DIAMOND, Inc. Hence, the "Hobby Market" reference. I preordered my copy through the comic book catalog PREVIEWS (Diamond's monthly catalog of all the forthcoming swag) all those years ago. In addition to the special features at the back of the book, the other thing that is different to the "trade" edition is the cool glow-in-the-dark ghosts on the dust jacket. I've got about 5 different editions of Coraline (including a comics adaptation hardcover), and this is my favorite one by far. Thanks for sharing it, Eric!

I haven't added much lately, since I've got most of the regular S/L Gaiman's that I've been looking for (still hunting down the Angels and Visitations and the Sub Press version of The Graveyard Book). But I did just pick up this - Melinda, the last of the Hill House Publications. It comes in an envelope with the same limitation number as the book itself (mine got a little wrinkled, but that's OK). Here is a description - "Released by Hill House, this limited edition is an oversized hardcover volume actually designed by Matuzak. Each page is quite literally a work of art, beginning with the embossed front cover with its hand-placed colour plate and continuing inside with red-flecked art-quality paper imported from Germany specially for this book. The page numbers are presented uniquely, as part of a machinery cog design at the top of the pages. Each colour plate is set off by a simple black line frame and what appear to be two mechanical hinges, as if the plate were a literal door into Melinda's world, waiting to be opened."

The envelope has nothing else other than the book. I guess you could call it the slipcase, although the art print on the front is applied. The drawings inside are black and white, with 8 laid-in color prints by the artist. It is a short story, but I loved all of the Hill House books, so I just had to get it:

Gaiman is going to either be a "love him" or "don't love him." The first book I read of his was Neverwhere, followed by American Gods and Anansi Boys (which loosely go together). His short story collections are great as well, but you'll notice some stories show up in multiple books. I liked Fragile Things. And his kids books should not be missed as well. Coraline is great.

I consider myself a fan, but actually disliked American Gods and it's follow up novel and short story. (ducks thrown torch, upon which the word heretic is branded) Something about them leaves me feeling cold. What can I say?

That said, anything else I've picked up from him, and I mean anything, I've loved. Neverwhere, Sandman, The Graveyard Book. Good Omens was great if you go for British humour... And like Eric mentioned, Fragile Things was great. To me anyway, it is almost a perfect collection. Also, should you get the chance, check out any of the several audiobooks of his that Neil himself has narrated. His voice is *perfect* for his own stories. The man could be a professional narrator, if he chose.

As far as I know, he won't do a public signing (these "Writers on the Stage" events are in a theater and the books are pre-signed)...but if you ask, maybe they can arrange it.

I'd agree with Patrick. I paid $30 for a 1st of Coraline, but signed would definitely increase the value since it is such a popular story. A doodle makes it nicer, but the inscription could hurt. $75-100 sounds about right.

I've been meaning to do this for a while now but have been a bit ... (ahem)... busy with other projects.

I don't really collect Gaiman but Tom and Patrick turned me onto the S/L of "STORIES". I bought the trade to read & haven't enjoyed a book more for ages!!! I know that it's other authors but it was so enjoyable reading so many different stories ( Gaimans short "The Truth is a Cave....." is, in itself, worth the price!!)

Anyway, I made this case for myself and, if there's any interest, would be glad to make more. It's made of mahogany with a blue liner that comes real close to matching the color of the book spine. The engraving is colored & supposed to resemble the marbled design of the book. The interior of the engraving is designed to resemble the signature pages before each story. There is room below the cases 'signature box' to engrave the number of your S/L if you want. The price would range from $90 (un-engraaved mahogany slipcase) -- $105 (engraved with title, editors, box, limitation #) -- to $125 (title, author, limitation and 'marbling' engraved). Anyone that's interested, wants more info or just wants to inquire about it, PM me. As always, the grain of the wood will vary from case to case.

I must admit, the mahogany didn't turn out to look too much like Marble... but still sort of a neat effect. That's why I usually make my case first -- I make the mistakes on my own case...after all, practice makes perfect. The color is hand-painted with acrylic paint inside an engraved design.

That's how I read it too, Patrick. I guess I'm trying to decide if having a signed bookplate where he writes "To Eric" on it would be as special as if it was in a first edition copy of the book.

One option:

Ask them to send the book and personalized bookplate but without attaching the bookplate.

Then you could partner the personalized bookplate with any book of your choosing (presumably a 1st edition), either loose or affixed.

In 2009, Dave McKean designed a set of stamps for the Royal Mail. Neil Gaiman wrote little stories to go with each stamp. Here are these MYTHICAL CREATURES:

I can't afford this, so I thought I would point it out to you folks in case you were interested. The first and only edition of the screenplay that Neil wrote for Good Omens, number 409 out of only 500 copies. It is also signed.

On top of that, it is part of an auction series ran by Patrick Rothfuss called Worldbuilders that is a very good cause, tied to Heifer International. It helps people raise themselves up out of poverty and starvation. All over the world Heifer promotes education, sustainable agriculture, and local industry. They don’t just keep kids from starving, they make it so families can take care of themselves. They give goats, sheep, and chickens to families so their children have milk to drink, warm clothes to wear, and eggs to eat.

It was only at about $200 when I posted it yesterday. I guess there's a lot of interest in it. It is the only one of the 400 on ebay right now. I'd imagine it would be hard to get ahold of after the initial release. Is yours signed? I wasn't sure if all 400 were or if this one was specially.

I would imagine they are paying just as much for being able to assist Patrick Rothfuss(who is an insanely popular author in his own right) be able to raise money and be a part of saying I helped Patrick Rothfuss give X dollars to Heifer International. He's done Worldbuilders before and people pay crazy amounts for stuff in the name of charity. The same thing happens at Penny Arcade's charity auction for their Child's Play charity every year.

Yep I finally received a reply yesterday. Here is what I was told:

"we had several delays at the bindery and received the books late last week.

The books are shipping this entire week. We are a small press and each order
is packed and addressed one at a time and we have more than 600 orders to
process . . . . We thank you for your patience."

This is the only ordering experience I've had with BP and it took them a month and four emails from me to get a reply. This may be an isolated incident however this is not the type of communication I like or expect from any company I have dealings with.

Merry Christmas to me -- A Screenplay S/L (500 numbered and 52 lettered). This screenplay based on Good Omens was never made available for sale to the public. It was only offered to subscribers of the Author's Preferred Series. The charity auction for this item listed upthread finished at $2000. Not even close to what I paid for mine, and I'm thrilled to own a copy of what I consider one of the scarcer Gaiman books to find.

I just mentioned this in another thread, but I ordered the S/L of SHADOW SHOW with slipcase. The jump in price to the edition with Bradbury's autograph was too high a hurdle for me.

Saw a signed copy of this at Half Price Books. I would have bought it if I had the money for it. They were selling for $85. Hoping to get the money at a later date and hoping it isn't sold by then.

If it was for this edition, I think $85 might be a little too high. I only paid $45 for mine a few months ago. Keep shopping around, you can probably do better.

I do also think $200 is a bit high for that book, but not exorbitantly. The book is a bona fide modern classic, beloved by many, and won pretty much every major award in the field the year it came out. It just celebrated its tenth anniversary, will soon be a major HBO series, and even was recently issued as one of those Barnes and Noble "Leather" bound Classics! It's the true first edition, and first "limited" edition. I think it should command a good premium. I judge it by- "If I didn't have it, what would I be willing to pay for it?", and I'd go $150.

I had almost forgotten I had this. It's a special charity book issued by Waterstone's, I think back in 2009. It contains a number of VERY short stories by various authors, including J.K.Rowling and Neil Gaiman, all written in the authors' handwriting, in what approximates a post card size and card stock. The J.K.Rowling story is a "prequel" to the HP series, featuring James Potter (Harry's father) and Sirius Black, back when they were teenagers. I'd estimate its length at about 1000 words.

I receive flyers and catalogs from Easton frequently. Most of the time, they go straight into the recycle bin as soon as I open them. Opening yet another Easton mailer and seeing this flyer surprised me! At a higher cost I might have declined, but at this price, I ordered one.

Having said that, this will be something like the 5th edition of this novel I will have bought. Even though I don't care much for the generic cover stamping, and lack of illustrations (really the only two ways to make an Easton book stand out from all their other "regular" editions)- I still think I'll like this edition. It is real leather (unlike the Barnes & Noble edition) with great fabric endsheets and good paper. As it's one of my all time favorite novels, I'm sure I'll take it for a spin at some point down the line.

Wow. Exactly the same here. That's weird for me- I ALWAYS open everything, and even (gasp!) READ my limited editions. For some reason, I'm just not motivated to crack the wrap on this. I guess it's a couple reasons: First, it's an Easton book, and thus I know exactly what it looks like on the inside, and since there are no illustrations to check out... and also- Eric has provided such beautiful photos of the book and sig page- I don't really need to even open it! I'm sure I will one day, though. It's already starting to gnaw at me....:unsure:

I loved Sandman, and I love the DC Absolute Editions...but I never bought any of the 4 pictured above. Not sure why. I guess I always found something else to by instead. But still very nice!

Technically, I didn't buy them either. My wife gets me one for either Christmas or Valentine's. They're really nice, each one has an introduction by some big shot writter (A. Moore etc), Gaiman's writting and notes, sketches, covers, promotional materials etc. Worth the money. I think Dreamhaven Books has signed editions but at full price. These were $75 each from Amazon with free shipping.

Bio, Brice.. get on it. Sandman doesn't read like a comic book at all. It's basically one very long Gaiman novel fully illustrated. The lettering in it is absolutely fantastic. I hope I'm not the only one who geeks over that stuff but each character from The Dreaming has his/her own style of lettering and then you end up voicing their lines differently in your head.

Each of those books took me almost a solid month to finish, they're in the 400 page range. I could take more pictures of the inside if there is any interest.

I just ordered a copy of this via Subterranean Press' website.

Since Amazon packs books so poorly, I didn't want to risk smashed corners, etc. and have to deal with the risk of sending things back, etc.

No Amazon discount, but the peace of mind is worth it on collectible book purchases.

Amazon has been better lately. I think I'll take my chances for now. I read that Neil signed 1000 signature pages, so I don't think there will be any shortage of books. If Amazon screws up, I'm sure I'll find it somewhere else for issue price.

Threadless Shirts (google it) have printed up a short story by Geiman in a series of 4 t-shirts. They're pretty expensive ($25 each) but seem to be nicer quality than Teefury.

Good question - the limiteds are listed for 600-750 on ABE, but not selling. I think I paid around 350 for my numbered copy, so maybe the lettered is somewhere around 800-1000? I'm not very good at the whole valuation thing.

Limited: 500 numbered copies, bound in cloth and marbled paper, slipcased, signed by author and artist.

Lettered: 26 copies, signed by author and artist, hand bound in the finest materials, with an original remarque by Dave McKean in each copy, housed in a custom traycase.
