This showed up yesterday - nothing flashy, exactly what you'd expect from Easton Press. I really love the look of the leather books.

Is it blue or black? It looks blue on the Easton Press website and in their mailer.

It's blue - I took the picture at night and the room lighting was not the best

Does it have that single colour illustration at the front like most Easton books do? I like their uniform look. Less is more.

Also, I'm looking for some signed trades: M is for Magic, Anansi Boys, Angels and Visitations.

Nope, no color illustration at the front on this one.

Call Dreamhaven books in Minneapolis for the signed trades. Neil was in the store last week.

Glad you enjoyed AFP last night, Chad. Any photos to share?

Unfortunately no - I know lame...we had a box of books - steph bought one for all of her directors - and it was late - so we just got through as best we could. But amanda did take a picture of steph and her box of books - I know a lot of good that does. It was still great and steph laughed out loud several times - well worth the time
Cool.

My matching set of Interworld/The Silver Dream arrived too. Like you, Eric, I had forgotten all about them.

Barnes and Noble had a bunch of signed titles available for Blck Friday, including the Anniversary Edition of American Gods. I went at about noon local time and they still had 1/2 dozen copies left. It took some searching to find a dust cover in good shape, but I found one that wasn't too dinged up. It has a special limitation page for the signature- it doesn't mention how many copies were signed. It started at cover price, but I was able to knock it down to $17 with my member discount and a coupon.

Apparently some books had higher limitations - somewhere online it said 5k-10k of the various books. When I went at 0805 all 4 copies were gone - and in my basket

Ok that's absurd and I can't believe any will sell at that price. The first set of 6 prints recently sold on eBay for $150 - I think the original prints were sold at $50 each so $300 for that set - to double that price is crazy. If anyone is trying to buy the prints to resell individually they'll never get that price or any return - well that's my opinion...

I love Neil's writing, I really do, but I just can't handle all of these signed prints, broadsides, posters, etc. There must be hundreds of thousands of items out there with his signature on it. I see some folks on his Twitter feed complaining when a signed book is available for $100, saying it is too much and how can anyone spend that money on a book. $1200 for 12 prints is ridiculous. I'm sure someone will buy them.

I'm going to be more selective with what signed items I get from Neil and others going forward. I don't need any more flat-signed books from Neil, Joe Hill, Justin Cronin, etc. I like having one or two examples of each signature. Kind of makes for a more unique collection. Limited Editions are different. It is time to re-focus my collecting goals.

I feel much the same way about Joe Hill. It's getting so that an UNsigned book of his is less common than the signed ones.

I third that. I have a few signed items by neil which I got in person but otherwise I'm not chasing anything. To me the only stuff with monetary value would be anything that is a S/L or getting his sig on some sandman stuff. I'd love to have a Sandman #1 signed by him in good condition or even one of the omnibus. Those are not on the top of my list though. I'm actually getting very interested in acquiring some McKean art.

I picked up a copy of Sandman #50 signed from a local comic book shop. They just had it in their regular bin of back issues and I think I paid $5 for it. That was a major score for me!! Still bagged and unopened and it was a number under 5000 also. Since I'll doubt I'll ever run into Neil with a CGC rep present, this is as close as I can get to an authentic Neil Sig on a comic book. Great find!

Neil Gaiman had a reading/signing event last night at B&N in NYC. I planned to go, but work wouldn't allow me...BUT - my NY friend decided to go regardless. I shipped her 5 of my books, you know, just in case (event instructions allowed only 1 additional item to be signed by Gaiman). Well, not so many people showed up, so she managed to sign 4 !!! she also told me it was the best signing she have been to - funny, smart and now she want to read all his books....

Coming soon from PS Publishing:

BEST NEW HORROR #25
The reaction to PS becoming the home to Stephen Jones’s BEST NEW HORROR, the flagship of dark literature, has been as stunning as it was unexpected. Many thanks for all those folks who took the trouble to write and say so. We’re delighted, Steve is delighted and, clearly, you’re delighted too. It’s so great to be delighted—I think I’m gonna spend the entire year this way. But before I get too spaced, here’s the contributor listing for the signed and slipcased hardcover edition of BEST NEW HORROR 25 (£60):

KIM NEWMAN,
 NEIL GAIMAN, NICHOLAS ROYLE,
DANIEL MILLS, ANGELA SLATTER,
 RAMSEY CAMPBELL,
JOEL LANE (unable to sign), REGGIE OLIVER, MICHAEL CHISLETT,
SIMON KURT UNSWORTH, LYNDA E. RUCKER,

 HALLI VILLEGAS,
 TANITH LEE
CLIVE BARKER (unable to sign),
ROBERT SHEARMAN
, SIMON STRANTZAS, MICHAEL MARSHALL SMITH,
THANA NIVEAU,
 STEPHEN VOLK

The sheets are still doing the rounds at the moment so we decided to hold off putting up an order page. But they’re more than halfway done so it won’t be long.

Hi Chad,
Thank you for your order! We will be getting signed copies from the publisher, so there won't be an opportunity for personalization. We have definitely ordered signed copies, so we should be able to fill your order. And we will take care to pack your book well.

Thanks for the followup! I'm still trying to figure out if there is any direct evidence of a special presigned page edition even planned, like a twitter pic or mention from him. There's this quote from his Facebook page of Jan 7:

"Because I'll be in Australia I can't pre-sign these copies of TRIGGER WARNING. But Porter Square books will have a 1,000 signed copies, which I'll do once I'm back. They will ship about three weeks after the book comes out"

Which makes me think that if anybody could snag a bunch of the presigned copies- it would be Porter Square... (here is the link to Porter Square info: http://www.portersquarebooks.com/product/trigger-warning-neil-gaiman-signed-first-edition)

More thoughts...?

When I've seen gaiman, Roth, howey, hill, rothfuss in the past few years - it was always at one of those shops or in a theater sponsored by them. True, especially when I wasn't there to have it signed in front of me. However, I did get my copy from old firehouse today - and I had asked it to be signed to chad and Caleb - and neil did actually write both calebs and my name in the book (I've been getting that done in a few of my books lately) so I'm happy to add that copy as well as the one with the tipped in page.

I think I did this for my copy of golden son too - but since that's on its way to pierce to actually get signed I can't recall…reminds me of the Seinfeld car rental episode about taking a reservation…

I'm not trying to sound like a jerk here, and if I do, I apologize. I'm just getting a little jaded at the whole signed book thing. The tipped in signature page is now becoming a regular part of collecting. To be honest, even limited editions are for most part done with tipped in signature pages. You can even buy pre-signed books at Target. They're losing their luster a little bit in my eyes. Of course, it is always better when you can meet the author and have it signed in front of you. That certainly makes the book more special. But the mail order option where the author "inscribes" it to me...I on the fence about it. I'm not really there, so it isn't really for "me." They just take a bunch of signed copies and then the author adds your name. But that's just the way I am feeling lately. I'm glad that everyone got the books from his signing, and the Chad and Caleb collection will hopefully mean a lot to both of you as he gets older.

Don't get me started on Golden Son :-)

I had Trigger Warning inscribed because I thought it'd be "neat". I'm not going to spring for a limited edition when it comes out so to have it inscribed to me and my girls was cool. No extra added value but to me it's a little special than a flatsigned. If we had any local stores with tipped-in pages, I'd have gotten that one instead.

Also, buying flatsigned (I really don't like this term) Gaiman books on eBay is tricky business. I bought only one from a seller I trust 100%. I bought a flatsigned book from Eric (thanks again!) on here but other than that, buying signed trades on eBay is just asking for trouble. An extra inscription by Gaiman adds a little authenticity I think.

I kind of think Neil has signed so much that he has almost devalued his own signature.

I also kind of think that Neil is the closest author to sai King when it comes to capturing the imagination of the masses in a mythic fashion.

I'm pretty susceptible to wanting to own signed Gaiman books, though. It doesnt matter to me if its flatsigned, personalized or S/N LE. I think I want one of each, LOL

I'm just fine with my tipped in copy. Matches my other books from Neil that have similar pages. Having a signed book where he just writes your name on the top of the page doesn't really feel like an inscription to me.

I prefer flatsigned over inscribed. In this case I already had the tipped in book and Chad mentioned Gaiman will inscribe if requested, so why not ? I'm at my early stage of collecting, so maybe I'm still excited every time I'm getting signed Gaiman book :)

But that's just the way I am feeling lately.

Eric - you worries me..... :)

Thanks for the concern

I remember how I felt when I first started collecting. Every new book I got was a joy. I'm glad you got the inscribed book, Shac. Its nice that authors still have the time do that for their fans. Its not like they have time to write formal inscriptions in thousands of books.

Just going through a collector's rut lately. Trying to figure out what to aim for next. I'm trying to avoid the "buy something just because" feeling I get sometimes. But when I go for a while without something new...you guys know how that feels. Trying to be a smart collector and not a hoarder.

Maybe I'll start collecting inscribed but not signed books like the copy of Golden Son I got :-)

I guess should fill you guys in on that since it has come up in a few posts. A few of us ordered copies of Golden Son by Pierce Brown from a website which I won't name. Pierce was nice enough to date in inscribe the books, but he didn't sign them. A few of us have sent the books directly to Pierce to have them signed. No word form him yet, but hopefully, he will sign them and send them back.

Sorry Eric - I knew I'd opened up a can of worms (:)) slipping that one in. Although that might be a new collection to start - imagine that conversation with the author - please just write my name and the date, but don't sign it - thanks. That would really throw them.

I agree - very distinct - I have most of his books on audio too - I enjoy listening to him read. I have yet to read the ocean - but I listened (first time I ever heard a story before reading it) while I was traveling. I got the audio books for my wife since hardly has any time for reading - but she's seen neil a few times and loved his story telling. I really hope the deluxe cave story includes a dvd from either the SF or ny event (or any of the other ones for that matter).

Eric, from time to time I take breather for varying periods as well. Nothing wrong with that.

Also, to keep things fresh, more and more I find other random authors that I enjoy (even if only for a single book) and attend a signing or order their book signed/inscribed. Nothing to do with market values, but just for the love of signed editions of books I enjoy.

Almost a year later than expected, yesterday I finally received a copy of the "Grains of Sand: 25 Years of The Sandman exhibition catalog" from the Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco! Did anyone else get a copy (I dont think they are on sale anymore)?

"The Cartoon Art Museum proudly presents the official Grains of Sand: 25 Years of The Sandman exhibition catalog. This 144-page full-color catalog showcases over 100 pieces from the museum exhibition, reproduced in full color to capture every detail of the original artwork. Highlights include more than 20 pages from the groundbreaking first issue of Sandman; eight pages from “The Sound of Her Wings,” featuring the first appearance of Death from Sandman #8; full-color paintings by Yoshitaka Amano, Barron Storey, J.H. Williams III, and series cover artist Dave McKean; beautiful, unretouched pencil artwork by famed illustrator Michael Zulli; and highlights from Neil Gaiman‘s personal collection of Sandman artwork. Grains of Sand features new text pieces by Sandman co-creators Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth, and Mike Dringenberg as well as Sandman: Overture artist J.H. Williams III"

I think the variation is due to 3 different 'states' :

- the original numbered, limited signed edition goes for the highest price, but fluctuates wildly. I missed a UK ebay auction that ended at £72, which I guess is around $100-$110? But have seen them go for a lot more than that in the past.

Due to demand, an unsigned edition was later released. I have one of these and paid about £30 for it a few years ago so thats about $45/50 I think. Personally I dont think it is worth any more than that.

Some people then get the unsigned edition signed, and sell it a signed edition!...I guess prices here vary depending on whether the bidders realise it is not the original signed/limited edition.

There were 2 versions of the book. A signed limited edition and an unsigned trade edition. The unsigned trade has been selling for $60-$90. Signed limited is worth $175-200

I guess the publishers weren't telling the whole truth when they said the prior copy would be the only HC version printed of the story - maybe they meant in 2014? Or figured another quick way to make money - on a story just reprinted in trigger warning???

It is not a new edition of the Sandman. It is a special edition that focuses on the Art. These high quality "Artist Editions" are meant to focus on the comic art alone vs the story and are usually B&W only and full sized. IDW was the first publishing house to put out these types of books and they sell out quickly with the OOP ones commanding higher prices on the secondary market.

It looks like Graphitti Designs has gained the contract to put out a similar type publication based on the Sandman series.

I'm aware that it won't have new material, as I have the Artist Edition of Born Again from IDW. I still think they have milked The Sandman for every penny they can. How many different books can you have of one series - regular comics, hardcover collections, trade paperbacks, the paperback slipcased set of the first three books, the trade paperback slipcased set of all ten books, Absolute Editions, the Annotated Sandman, Omnibus Editions, the limited edition Omnibus set, Artist Editions....did I leave anything out?

Well the regular comcs later had an essential line - ;) but yes this has been beaten to death. I own a few IDW big ass books - like the watchmen which are pretty neat (and signed) - but not sure about this one. Oh - you forgot the dust covers book and multiple books discussing the series itself - if you want to include those. It's not sold out because of how its announced - just their regular email that came out at 0807 PST on a Monday - or 11 am est - which is around 4pm in the UK - basically a time when most people are at work and might not check their email too often - like us. So this one can easily be missed. Plus it sounds like they have their stock (sale date is today) and only 250 - so unlikely that neil will sign 250 more once these sell out. Although I'm sure someone here would make you an offer - gotta agree with Eric - wouldn't ever split that up - just too rare to have all the same number (we'd love to see a picture though). And a nice complete set. I'm just happy my AG number is #95 - which makes it easier for me to pass this one by. But if someone has that number AG - I'm sure they'll be paying for it

Yeah, most likely if I ever sell any of the Hill House stuff it'll be as a set. Especially since I have a low number. #47

Also, A SCREENPLAY, which, if you were a subscriber, was sent to you FREE- in a matching number as the rest of your books, et al.

For that, if you also have Melinda, Anansi Boys, and the Anansi boys chapbook- they should all be the same number. Can't remember if the Anansi Boys Notebook was numbered as well... think so.

Yeah I have all of those. And my slipcase on Anansi Boys may be unique. I was communicating with the Hill House owner and he mentioned a slipcase he was working on to hold the book in its slipcase plus the bonus chapbook of Gaiman's notes. He wanted my opinion on it and sent me one. It's essentially a double slipcase. Shortly afterwards they went under. So as far as I know these were never offered to anyone else.

You have what is somewhat of a mini Holy Grail to me: that very prototype slipcase. I tried like hell to get Pete to get back to me with one, but the timing- as you say- was right as they were imploding, and I never got one. Might not be a big deal to some, but I wish that I had gotten one of those. The only other thing from them that I really wished I had is Only The Gods Are Real, the small companion book to the AG Lettered. That little book and the super-overkill wooden box/marbled door were not enough to justify a Lettered purchase for me.

I think I saw the combined slipcase once in an auction - it might have been one from Gregg at dreamhaven. Since I already had the book and notebook (not combined slipcase though) - I didn't bother. And I only saw one of the lettered AG up on Abe's a while back - I think they were asking close to $2200 or more. All nice things to look at - alas they won't be in my collection anytime soon.

Does the combined slipcase have the wood cut spider inlay as well?

A few questions.

Has anyone looked at Neil's older signature on Sandman comics? Is it just me or does it vary a lot from his signature in his books? Specifically I was looking at the Sandman #50 where there were 5000 signed editions with a CoA. Does anyone else have this issue and have they compared that to his signatures elsewhere?

Also.. what is the market value for the S/L American Gods... both the Hill House version and the Eastman Press version?

Thanks

I checked my Sandman 50 against Trigger Warning. It is somewhat different. There is only an N for Neil where in his books it looks like at least an Ne. Last name looks a little different too. But I don't worry about that too much. The comic was signed 22 years ago. My signature looks different now compared to how I signed my name in 1993.

and i think his signature probably varied from #1 through #5000 in that lot as well. I have some of his s/n chapbooks - actually 2 of the same one (that one with the black and white cover - drawing blank of the name)- and the signature's look completely different - I think that was a 1500 run.

Just got my goldsboro Trigger warning in the mail today - #223

Hi all,
I have a very rare edition of Fortunately The Milk. I used to work in Waterstones (UK bookseller chain) and as part of a promotion shortly before publication Bloomsbury sent advanced copies to randomly selected employees. They're hardback with a unique cover, the signatures of both Neil Gaiman and Chris Riddell as well as being numbered 65/100. These editions were only ever made available to Waterstones employees.

I was hoping to find out how much something like this is worth? :)

That is a really cool copy of Milk. I have never seen it before, so I'm having a hard time coming up with a value. On the good side, it is a unique cover, or at least it is one I have never seen. But it is signed on a bookplate, which I personally am not a fan of. Also, are there only 100 copies of this book, or did they just take 100 from the print run, number them, and slap a bookplate in? All in all, still a unique and interesting item. Maybe some others would like to throw an estimate out there? Thanks for sharing.

i remember seeing those covers (and trying to get one) - when they first came out there were a few on eBay. But I think they all were in the $65-85 range. As for the book plate - that is similar to the one in the paperback ARC that I have - but those were only signed by Gaiman .That ARC is a fair bit more rare. The regular edition - signed goes for around $35-45; those double signed and various editions would run between those two prices - $45-65. And the signed ARC's right around $100 - maybe $85-125 - realistically. I think this copy would fall right below the ARC in value/price - so right in the $65-85 range - does that sound about right?

these are all my estimation/guesses. i.e. I would not be paying more than those prices if I were looking for a copy personally - nor would I expect much more than that if selling - but that all depends upon the buyer :)

viperdesmith
03-23-2015, 03:49 PM
Thank you for the advice cit :) I may have been wrong about the rarity of these; it's interesting others went on sale. From the communications we received at work it sounded like these were exclusives for us and as selling these things on while still employed often ends with dismissal I assumed most would still be in the original owners hands. I'm only selling mine because I've left and need money. I'm actually quite sad to be letting it go but from what I've seen in this thread it will hopefully end up in a good home :)

I've put a price of £70 on it for now, does that sound fair? The auction is here - http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=281638118391 if anyone is interested. Feel free to make me an offer as I would much rather take a bit less money and know that it's going somewhere it will be appreciated :) if anyone is willing to offer payment as a bank transfer and cut eBay out I can offer free postage and shipping.

Like I said I'm actually sad to be parting with it. As well as a sealed, double signed and numbered special first edition of The Long Earth by Pratchett and Baxter. For the same reason as the Gaiman book above; knowing that will go to someone for whom it will be special makes me feel much better about selling it.

Patrick

Someone just made me an offer for the book; I'm fine with shipping it overseas but that's not something I can afford to do myself until the 20th of next month. If whoever offered is willing to pay by bank transfer I can negotiate the most appropriate form of shipping with you :)

I'm fairly new to eBay so PayPal holds funds from me until shipments are complete, which I can't afford to do right now overseas. Sorry to disappoint.

I'm just curious - what do you all think of this signature up on ebay -

Personally it just doesn't seem right to me - just curious as to what others think

Just announced the deluxe sandman overture will go on sale in November - although I haven't seen any live pre-order links. I imagine TFAW - things from another world or midtown comics will have something up soon.
