Jeez, what a deal! Sorry you had to let go so "cheap". I simply cannot understand how these books haven't skyrocketed like some other (lesser) books out there. These are some of the most gorgeous books ever produced- by one of "our" finest authors. They should run at least $1K each, to my mind. (There's a few of these head-scratchers for me out there: The Charnel House edition of Garton's THE NEW NEIGHBOR is another. That absolutely gorgeous book is still easily had for cover price ($150)- or less- all these years later. Even as Charnel House continues to cement itself as one of the most important genre small presses ever. Go figure).

Anyway, best of luck with everything.

Ron

It is odd to see what does and does not go way up in value. I just purchased a hill house Ray Bradbury signed/#d on eBay for $40. I think that book was $200 new. I don't care really what it winds up being worth. I now own something signed by one of my childhood idols.

Received my signed illustrated NEVERWHERE from Barnes & Noble yesterday. Typical less-than-perfect copy from B&N. As much as they and I go way back, and as much of a soft spot I have for them as virtually the LAST chain bookstore out there- I've given up on them mailing me a decent copy of anything over the last several years.

Curiously, the US edition is unjacketed. I like the UK better.

My copy went through several carries plus dreaded UPS to get to me in Canada, and it was in perfect condition. I get books from B&N a few times a year, always these signed editions, and I've never had a problem of one being damaged or less than pristine.

I have a pretty unusual bit of Gaiman ephemera for sale. It's called Alan Moore's Songbook and features a poem illustrated by Gaiman. The book is a 64 page paperback (standard comic book dimensions), the story Gaiman illustrated is 7 pages. How's $12 shipped sound?

That's a gorgeous book! Sub Press has done some really beautiful lettered editions, but it's hard to tell when they are going to pull out all the stops or when they are going to phone it in (e.g. produce lettered editions that are no different from the numbered, just with slightly nicer materials and a traycase). I guess one clue is in the price, like this one listed at $900 versus the $250 books. But the descriptions are always the same: "hand bound in the finest materials with a custom traycase"...

Anyway, great grab - I'd love to have a copy on my shelf one day!!

This was quite a December for me with Gaiman.
Smoke and Mirrors and The Graveyard book in lettered state were super difficult to find the last two years. I hope someone on this forum owns a copy because in my mind both books are the pinnacle of publishing creativity and craftsmanship.
And I do agree that sometimes the only way to determine if Lettered edition is much more than a Limited with a traycase is to look at the issue price.

Sandman Overture is (of course) getting the Absolute treatment. Amazon product description has it at just north of 400 pages. The hardcover is 224 pages and that already includes around 30 pages of bonus material.

This also means an updated Sandman all-in-one compendium. And an annotated Overture. And then an anniversary edition of Overture. And then an anniversary of the new compendium. Heck, let's not forget the instocktrades.com variants.

I can't think of a single working writer who publishes so little new material and still manages to have a "new" book hit the shelves every few months. And on that tip, the most recent noir-styled paperbacks are now out in a slipcase.

Collecting Gaiman, Hill, and Rowling has stopped being fun and it's now exhausting and defeating.

I am right there with you. I have pretty much stopped collecting Joe Hill. His latest writing is not as good as his earlier work to me. Sometimes I wish I had never started collecting him in the first place. As for Gaiman, I'm only looking to buy new work in the future. No more reprints, no more Sandman, etc. I have enough Gaiman sigs in my collection to last me.

I totally agree with this. I understand that he is very busy in a lot of different directions and mediums and medias, but- i wish he'd write more freaking "grown up" novels. Even counting 2013's slim "Ocean", it's been over a dozen years since the one before that (Anansi Boys). I don't think we can even call him a "novelist" at this point- which is fine. It's not my career. But, it does almost feel like he's purposely been avoiding a proper American God's sequel, for whatever reasons. I believe he is finally going to do it next, but- people might not care as much anymore if he waits much longer.

I will pick up the absolute edition, to complete the set. (and in my mind these are the best quality editions of the sandman work) I wont worry about any other reprints/variants though. I dont feel the need to collect everything!

I can see the point in some of them though..i didnt pick up the 'noir style' PBs at the time, but if I wanted them now I would probably pick up a nice slipcase edition - but if already had them I wouldnt bother.

Add GRRM to the list of endless reprints though.. I am not sure how many versions of GOT anyone really needs now!

I am pretty sure a sequel to neverwhere ('seven sisters') was touted as his next book. I guess its hard to find time for full on novel writing at the moment - he has been writing for American Gods, script writing and showrunning for the current filming of the Good Omens series in the UK and then before those we had Norse Mythology - and a bit earlier he had the View from the cheap seats collections (and a new son arriving!).

Hopefully after the Neverwhere sequel more books will follow and I wouldnt be surprise if a return to the AG world was on the cards

tbh I was never really taken with Joe's writing. I sold on the few s/l's that I had and I cant say that I miss them! But we all have different tastes and clearly a lot of people do like his work.

What's the view on the Sandman series from the Gaiman fans?

I've just finished, and thoroughly enjoyed, Joe Hill's Locke & Key, so i'm looking for another graphic novel series to sink my teeth into and wondering if Sandman might be a good place to start.

Personally, no, but i thought I would try them from someone else's recommendation. As this book is relatively low cost (and shipped free to a US address) I figured it was a good purchase to try them on!
I would be happy to provide feedback afterwards though.

One interesting option they offer is to repack to smaller boxes! I figure this is aimed more at purchases from somewhere like Amazon but it could be dangerous if someone tries to save a small amount on an expensive item that really warrants the extra packing!

Not a book, but this is something pretty cool I added to my collection recently - its an artist proof copy of the recent print offered by Neverwear, signed by both Neil and the artist David Mack.

I must get round to starting a 'my non-king collection' thread soon, but at the moment most of my books are in boxes whilst we decorate a couple of rooms...but they will be heading into new bookcases when we are finished :-)

In regards to my use of a mail-forwarding company (Stackry) to ship this from the US to the UK, a few people had asked about my experience - on this first use of their service, I would have to give them 5*. No hassle at all.

I thought it might be useful to breakdown the process (and the costs) for anyone that was interested

After creating an account with Stackry I was issued a mailing address and I then used this as the shipping address for my Easton Press order.

The book was shipped from Easton Press on May23. It arrived at my Stackry account on May 29 (but there was a 3 day holiday weekend during this period)

I received a notification from Stackry the same day. They confirmed the pacel size/weight (12 x 7 x 2 inches / 2lb weight) and asked my to provide an item description and value. I found this useful as it meant I could make sure the item was correctly described as BOOK/PRINTED MATERIAL in order to not pay import duty (books are not taxable in the UK but I have to pay customs on some before due to badly worded custom label!)

At this stage I could select for them to repack my item to a smaller box for a fee of $5, or indicate if I wanted them to ship in the original packaging. In this case I retained the original packing.

I was then presented with numerous shipping options with estimated delivery time and costs as outlined below:

Global Mail Direct / 6-15 days / $15.64
DHL Worldwide Express / 3-8 days / $36.04
FedEX Intl Economy / 3-8 days / $50.84
FedEX Intl Priority / 2-5 days / $55.10
USPS Priority / 8-14 days / $66.13
USPS Express / 4-8 days / $79.42

As I signed up via a recomendation link, I had a $10 shipping voucher to use. I selected the Global Mail Direct option and therefore paid $5.64 for shipping.

After completing all this (and making payment by PayPal) , I received a shipping notice the next day (30th) with tracking links.
The parcel cleared customs in the UK on June 3rd and arrived to me on June 5th, so in all it only took 1 week to ship.
(note - international shipping was managed by DHL, UK delivery by Yodel)

So as far as a test run went, this was very succesful. They would have held my parcel for 45days at no charge, so if I had multiple orders to manage, I could stockpile them to one consignment and in theory save on postage by shipping them all as one delivery. My online account gives me access to all my order information and communication from them was very good indeed.

Stackry are also open about their shipping costs. see the calcualtor here: https://www.stackry.com/en/shipping-calculator

(and if anyone wants to sign up via a referal link, if you use this we both get a $10 voucher!: https://www.stackry.com/register?referral=7126903 )

Plus his involvement in American Gods Series 2 (and presumably now working on S3), and his 'overseeing' role on a new TV adaptation of Gormenghast.

We know he has the Neverwhere sequel on the go ('Seven Sisters') so I assume that will be the next fiction book we get, but I am not really expecting that for some time yet.

Not sure how this new Folio edition of Anansi Boys snuck in (along with a very cool looking Something Wicked This Way Comes and a new Jules Verne- don't they usually do big teaser lead ups to new books?)- it looks pretty great, but I hate when they double the price on the Gaiman titles. Fair point but there are five editions, regardless of what we call them, only two of them signed by Gaiman. That's a pretty good mindset though; it doesn't interest me, ergo it doesn't exist.

I think I'm a little bitter because I'm jonesing for a new Gaiman book. I've read his recent graphic novels but it's just not the same.

True - there are 5 books - but again I looked at those lower 2 tier books as the regular publisher editions...since theyíre releasing the ďdefinitiveĒ text or authors preferred, whatever you want to call it. But true thereís been many versions released but this the only one tied with a signed version. Sounds like after good omens show he plans to get back to writing...kids, marriage, 2 shows, etc will take away from writing I guess.

Canít wait to see him this May - maybe then heíll mention new writing projects

No, NOT signed, either of the Gaiman Folio editions. Still, AG is quite lovely, and AB looks equally so. Wish they wouldn't price them so high, as I said.

If anyone is on the fence about this, I received mine this past week and itís really a beauty. If youíre intrigued by the art, itís even cooler in person. Both the slipcase and the book have multiple textures, ranging from a slick gloss to a coarse fiber. And the black page edges with the green spiderwebs are just a cool idea (but, admittedly, Iím a sucker for stuff like that).
