There's some funny pics on Neil's Twitter feed of him signing 3500 blank pages for Norse Mythology. No "pre-signed publisher" page or any specific text. Just looks like an image and his signature. He signed 1000 with one bottle of ink and is moving on to the next bottle.

Saw that. Is there any indication which edition this is for? US or UK? Looking at the deckled edge of the paper I'm thinking US...

*edited to add: actually- in one photo the signed pages look deckled, and in the other- not...

I couldn't tell either. I know Waterstones has a preorder for a signed edition, so maybe they are for the U.K. Version?

I just got my 3 books today from Foyles (all except AG - that is coming separately) - and all 3 of those books have a single "1" centered under the headline publishing group line as you mentioned. So looks like they are into a second printing.

I think that it only cost me about $80 including shipping for those three from Foyles.

You can find lots of gaiman prints from various artists, often some are signed. So the neverwear portfolio is a bunch of these prints - I actually have two of them - and my favorite by Roman dirge - Neil and the little dead girl - the one I have is signed by both gaiman and Roman.

The Strand is an in store event - looks like he is physically only there and then a few days later in London. It might just be a speaking engagement with pre-signed copies. Then he will be at some smaller venues for meet n greet and Q&A over the next few months.

Wow, those (Mysterious Bookshop) copies went fast. Those had to be pre-signed copies, right? I only keep harping on this because I prefer the pre-signed, tip-in sheet "editions", whenever offered. For 2 reasons: They are (seemingly) more "limited" than a regular trade copy (signed or not), and- the signatures are de facto confirmed "authentic" by their nature. There's never a question.

Incidentally- and sort of unrelated- I'm curious as to why some of you would chase the UK pre-signed copies, and not necessarily the US editions (or, as an after-thought). Keeping with standard (old-school) book collecting principals, you collect the edition from which county the author is primarily associated with. Admittedly, this is a really tough call with Neil, with his dual nationalities, but when it's a toss up (as it might be here), you go with the "better" edition, and just down to quality of raw materials- that's nearly always US. So- thoughts?

Typically in past for pre-signed tipped in books he's signed about 2K-5K - but this seems less than that - since signed copies haven't been that publicized and small Indy shops are only getting a handful of copies.

Hmm. Even though deckled edges are traditionally a hallmark of fine press books- I tend to agree with you; they're a pain to "thumb" through.

I still write checks - the kid's schools won't take credit cards for field trips, etc. I also still use Quicken to balance and track everything. Some habits die hard... :-)

I still balance all my payment (even those e-checks) in the old fashioned check book - and I have to still write a few - our landscaper for one and as Eric mentioned some school things - but between landscaping debt there are very few written checks. I've tried some online/app products for balancing the bills/checks/purchases - but I find I always come back to the checkbook and written ledger - I like doing the basic math ;) - the last app I used always screwed up after each update. Anyone have a favorite?

You sound like my wife - I don't balance hers (neither does she - nor does she look too closely) apparently that's my job. I check hers every time I balance mine (but mine has the mortgage auto pay and bigger bills - hence the importance). That's how I caught some recurring nursing bill that she never noticed - which needed to be stopped. Plus I gotta double check all those anonymous PayPal charges for all those mysterious books that keep arriving

Saw that, and gotta say- was a bit disappointed. I enjoyed Neverwhere, but a new Neverwhere novel before an American Gods? Starz is going to air the adaptation of the first book with no new material for additional "seasons"...

Tracking on my copy from the Strand has been updated to show it is en route since yesterday.

My UK copy came from Waterstones; it was shipped on the 6th and arrived on the 10th at home in Canada, which was amazingly fast.

Is anybody here interested in buying a UK first print hardback of Stardust (the novel version published by Headline)? I've been going through some old boxes and found a few As New/As New copies that I've had probably since they were published. £25 each plus shipping at cost.

You can occasionally find them on eBay - I have the green cover one - second edition. I've looked for signed red/blue ones in past and then just forgot about it (didn't need to be that complete - I have the 4 individual illustrated books - signed by both) - but of course a nice double signed one sold for about $65 a few weeks back - that's what I got for removing that search.

As for the strand just got notification it was shipped today - will see which gets to the door first

My uk signed copy from Waterstones was signed on a front paper but it seems the Foyles edition (with black page edges) has an extra tipped in signature page. Not a limitation page as such, but different to the other editions.

Neil answered this at the London event yesterday. He thinks season one is only about 25% of the novel, so they have plenty to be going on with!
'The Seven Sisters' will be the name of the new Neverwhere book (and he is 3 chapters through writing it!)

Not that I'd ever sell a (flat)signed Gaiman book (the minimum profit isn't worth the hassle IMO) but if I ever wanted to, a tipped-in sheet would go a long way to provide legitimacy of the signature. This also works the other way too; I'd rather pay a little extra to be 100% sure the signature isn't a forgery.

To be honest, in this case I don't think the tipped in sheet helps with authenticity as it still doesn't say in print that it's a signed edition....and most people wouldn't even realise it was a tipped in page anyway!
For a £20 I don't think it matters either way but I do like the look of the foyles 'black' edition

I included a front shot only of Neverwhere with Thinner and Running Man on my collection post and have added some additional pics here after discovering Gaiman thread. Was advertised as Absolutely Fine Condition and Gaiman is one of my favorites. Since i recently added a bookshelf in office to make desk exclusively DT, I've had more space to get more books and stuff i'm reading (It's next to Straub and the Bachman books). The Condition was as advertised, for Signed limited edition 387/500 bookplate to FEP and i'm thrilled/feel lucky to have run across it.

Glad to hear you on the forum - we are pretty good about announcing signings, etc and when/where tickets might be available - for future events. Although gaiman events are getting much fewer and farther between. I mean when ocean came out - I think I saw gaiman at 3 separate events within a year. You probably won't like it more the more you read.
It is a very odd book, I just re-listened to it and it was much better the second time around but I wouldn't say I love it now. He did say in the new intro that he wanted to write a book that meandered and it totally does and I actually appreciated that the second time.

My wife loves mythology and lore and she loved it so maybe if you know all the gods and those stories it's more of a blast of a read.

My favorite by him is the Ocean at the End of the Lane.

Just got settled in from another fun evening. Met up with Steve, Patrick and Khegan at local brewery before the Gaiman meet n greet:

After a couple of beers we headed to a local Puerto Rican restaurant for some good food and conversation. Then it was off to the Luther Burbank center

The VIP event was very small in number - maybe 50 people - in a nice room with some tables, food and beverages. Initially they had a table set off to the side and the hostess told us how the evening would go - and it sounded like he'd stay there and she'd bring groups up to meet him for pictures. She said no flash photography and he'd probably not be signing anything. My ears pricked up at probably - was there a chance...maybe

Well actually Neil didn't follow that plan - he just made his way around the room, talking with each group of people and taking pictures with everyone. And my mind went kinda numb as he was in the room, just a mere feet away from me - so if my memory is not correct - Steve & Patrick please feel free to correct me.

So when we were on deck we all stood up to get our chance. Since the event people said we were moving along since Neil didn't have much time left, they got all of our cameras - ready to get our pictures. Here's one example:

What I failed to mention - prior to the photo op - I placed my two books on our table - in plain view, these were stacked on top of each other (it was a tiny table):

I don't think I saw Neil sign any books prior to coming to our side but f the room. He did sign a picture from the nose picker (I'll let Steve and Patrick share that story if they like - since they witnessed the horror, not me).

So when Neil took his pictures with us, my books were on the table. I didn't hand them to him, nor did I even ask if he'd sign them. After the pictures he started taking with us - and noticed the books on the table and asked if those were indeed Duran Duran books and whose were they. Of course I couldn't hold back and said they were mine. And he goes - we'll bring them over here and let me sign them - as he pulled a sharpie out from his inside jacket pocket. I bring them over and he notices there are 2 and then he saw the HC - and I'm not sure exactly what he said but I think it was along the lines of wow - don't see that too often. And he goes on to tell us that he had to spend $800 to buy his own copy of the HC online. He talked a little about the book - he was unsure how many HC were made - but he thought maybe a 100 send to distributors. And then he said these will probably be the rarest books he signs for awhile.

So as he's signing the books I could only hope to someday get signed - my brain went to mush. I was star struck and able to thank him and shake his hand after he signed both books.

Steve was able to get in a question as well - asking about how his quote made it into a recent episode of criminal minds. He mentioned someone involved in the show (I didn't catch the name - I swore he said Kirsten dunst- but I must be mistaken) had seen him at an event and mentioned the got that into the show. I can't say exactly how long he spoke with us - maybe 5 minutes or so, maybe a little more - but so worth it. The VIP area was really nice, well run and a small crowd.

He mentioned he's working on the sequel to Neverwhere (which most of us knew), as well as another Odd story - so revisiting his mythology roots. There might be a book about frogs down the road. And something that excited me was starting the casting on the 6 hour TV program - a joint venture between the BBC and Amazon - for Good Omens :)

And he shared how he collaborated with Sir terry pratchett on writing good omens. I didn't get a chance to submit a question. But as I was sitting there listening to him read a Poem (he did ask us in the VIP gathering if we had a poem we wanted him to read) and I only wished I asked him to read one of the poems framed in my office - the day the saucers came - so my evening was complete when he ended the evening by reading that exact poem.

So that's my recounting of the evening, it might not be exactly 100% correct, but that's the version that I'll remember best.

I think the only thing I would have changed in your accounting of the evening would be to start with “The evening was an ‘Adventure’!”. Other than that it was well said.

For me the two high points were hearing Neil talk about the upcoming American Gods TV series and that his favorite episode (for now) is #4, which contains nothing he has written. There was a question about his feeling on having his work adapted. Neil told a story about selling an early story for a stage production and seeing it opening night. He soon realized that they were performing it word for word and he even started mouthing along with the dialogue. Half way thru the performance he came to the conclusion that the show was terrible because of this. So it was very exciting to then hear how pleased he is with the new TV show and how much he is enjoying what others are expanding on from his work.

The other high point was the Duran Duran adventure. Hearing Neil ask for the books so he could sign them was so unexpected. Seeing his delight when he saw that one was a hardcover was amazing. All of that pales in comparison to my enjoyment of watching Chad’s reaction throughout the whole event. It was pure shock and awe and for a solid 10 minutes Chad was clearly in an alternate state of consciousness.

Drinks and dinner before the show was a great time and I am looking forward to the next event.

A family showed up late to the VIP event and as it happen walked in to be the next group for Neil to meet. Being a small event everyone that was already there were good natured and no one seem to take too much notice of this. Our group had a brief laugh and waited our turn. Then it happened. The daughter, about 9 or 10 years old, started to pick her nose just inches in font of Neil Gaiman! I say started because it was not a quick poke and pick, it was a legitimate exploration event. I was truly in shock at seeing this and could not believe it. I said something to our group and they all dismissed it as I must have been mistaken in what I saw. Then we all watched as she went for round two. This time she had found her target and gave it a good inspection once it was out. I think you all know what is coming next, I started saying no please don’t, but there was no stopping it, she ate it. We were all stunned, not that a child would do this but that it was happening right in front of Neil. He didn’t show any indication that this was happening and I hope that her being so close that she was too short for him to notice. Thankfully this was over and we were distracted with our turn to meet Neil.

Sadly this is not the end of the story. As we sat enjoying the VIP setting and talking about our encounter with Neil I glanced over my shoulder and saw the true horror, the father was now picking his nose! I quickly turned away and said oh my god. Patrick and Khegan said what, I told them, and they both said nooo! Unfortunately for them they had a direct view. We said no wonder the girl had no issue doing what she had done with the example her father was setting. As was talked there was an ongoing tally and when it reached #5 we all agreed we were no longer in a VIP event and should make our way to our seats for the show.

The three events were each from charity auctions or purchases for "tea with Neil" or the like. With the first my family (wife and two children) and I had dinner with Neil at a restaurant. Surprisingly, no one seemed to recognize him, or at least, no one bothered us. The other two were lunches at restaurants, my wife accompanying me, and again each time was for about two hours. We invited his editor Jennifer Brehl along, who we are friends with. All three times it was a lot of laughs and great conversation. Each time, when it was clear that the time with Neil was ending, I'd pull out a knapsack full of all unsigned books and comics, upwards of 50-60 things. My wife would be shaking her head in horror, saying "Chris, no, this is so embarrassing," and Neil would say, "no, it's OK, I understand, I've been there too." And he'd patiently - quickly - sign everything and even take time to inscribe some things or draw in them. And then take more time for goodbye hugs and photos.

People had warned me not to try to meet famous people whom I admire because they might turn out to be jerks in real life. This is not the case for Neil. He is very friendly and personable, and I'm delighted and honored to have met and had occasions to interact with him.

Neil's signatures vary a ton from his book signatures and some of his Sandman signatures. Some of his Sandman stuff is really rushed and has a very pronounced G... that being said, that signature is one of the worst I've seen and I wouldn't A. Full y trust it and B. wouldn't want it. Also that drawing is a tiny bit suspect also.

That's definitely not his signature. Doesn't look like it belongs to any of the artists in the book either. I do get the impression that it ends in a "y" but it's definitely not Samuel Delany's signature either. His is very neat.

If not a deliberate forgery, it might be a gift inscription from one person to the recipient.

He hasn't written the sequel yet. But there are two novellas involving the main character, titled "Monarch of the Glen" and "Black Dog." Plus the novel Anansi Boys shares some characters but isn't a sequel per se.

I wil probably have a few of the indie bookstore day covered Norse Mythology books - I will know better by next week when they all arrive (and I figure out how much they actually cost). I was able to order one from several of the local Indie shops - and they all were kind enough to ship. Although one shop "followed" the rules and would not sell over the phone the day of - instead they said to call back the next day and if they had any they would sell it then - which they did have and did sell. So I did my part by supporting most of the Copperfield stores around town - plus I have been to a bunch of the events that they have sponsored - so I figured it was the right thing to do.

Fantastic listing, Booknutt. Great description of just how rare- and nearly impossible to obtain- this complete set is. I truly consider it one of the absolute best "sets" of a particular publisher- and author- in this field of collecting. In the description you say that the Anansi Boys double-slipcase is rare and you know of only one other copy out there. But the double-slipcase is what subscribers received, and i have that. My number was #27 and I have a complete set.

One thing missing in your listing is the small companion to American Gods, two books in one, Only The Gods Are Real / An Astonishingly Incomplete Bibliography, which was mainly released with the lettered edition but some copies were also released alone.

Some of the items that were issued unsigned, such as the reader's copy of American Gods, and the unsigned Anansi promo, I did get signed later.

I've also got all the lettered editions that Hill House released, which included American Gods, Anansi Boys, A Screenplay, and Melinda. I think that's all of them.

That's odd. I had my folio edition signed at hay too but they had a policy of Norse gods plus one other only to be signed. I did see a few people with this on the queue so I can only think he had a group of friends queuing with 1 copy each (which annoys me a bit as that just made the queue even longer for the real fans)

Personally I got my folio edition signed and dedicated and also my 'Calendar of tales' - I had it tucked under my arm due to the one other book policy, but Neil saw it and said 'wow you've got one of those' and gladly signed it too.

Agree completely with your assessment - even I passed on these signed and Remarque copies - they are nice, but I'm not a completist (although it doesn't seem that way at times). I did bring the folio AG with me when I met Neil in Santa Rosa in march - but I left it in my car - since I only brought my copies of Duran Duran with me - since I really wanted those signed (and this was billed as a non-signing event, just a meet n greet). But I too wondered the ties Steve (analecta has to get several Remarque books - he must be friends or neighbors with McKean).

I didn't get one of these- too $$$- but, I will say that I recently re-read the book, and was alternating between 3 or 4 different editions, just because (well, why have 10 different editions if you're not even going to crack the damn things!). And, as lovely as that Hill House edition is- and it truly is- I just found myself a bit more comfortable with the Folio. It just feels and reads extremely well. So- a signed copy of what may well be the "best" edition of a seminal (Multiple award winning) novel- is hard not to put a high premium on. Congrats on those who got one.

Also, re: Folio: Between this and their recent gorgeous Lovecraft volume- they are doing some great work lately...

At least I presume this'll be the same as the UK version - which I think I have at home (have to double check once I get back) - and those were signed by riddell and Gaiman if memory serves me anything...anymore
