There are enough McCammon collectors here that I figured a separate thread was warranted.

Robert McCammon's The Hunter from the Woods is now available for pre-ordering from Subterranean Press (http://www.subterraneanpress.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=McCammon05&Category_Code=PRE&Product_Count=24)

The Hunter from the Woods is a brand-new collection of short stories and novellas featuring Michael Gallatin, the lycanthropic hero of The Wolf's Hour.

I have three pre-orders with subpress and was wondering what the quality of their books were like. I would also like to know if anyone has ever had any major issues with this publisher before I order anymore books.

Regardless of the comments (about subpress) I personally think that it is wonderful that they are republishing McCammons books. He is one of the most overlooked contemporary authors out there today (imo).

Ben, I haven't ordered a whole lot from them (I have been specializing in Stephen King almost exclusively) but what I HAVE gotten from them are top-rate. Absolutely no complaints.

Subterranean Press does nice quality books. I think you will be pleased. I've got a bunch of pre-orders with them too. I've not had any major issues and have been a customer for several years. A couple of mistakes have been made over the years but they went out of their way to correct them. You won't have any problems with your orders.

I've never ever had any problems with them.

my mcCammon's collection is definitely growing...
I've got orders for letter editions for Mr Slaughter, Baal, The Five,
plus a Baal deluxed signed, and a couple of signed first editions of Baal (from CD)

already have:
limited slipcased #'d swan song
limited #'d Wolf's Hour

signed 1st editions of:
Queen of Bedlam
Mister Slaughter
Speaks the Nightbird

and 1st eds (unsigned) of:
Ushers Passing
Mine

My girlfriend likes McCammon alot too, so I've been buying signed firsts for her too when offered by the publishers... I think she has 3 so far.

I'm intrigued, Eric. Why do you wish to trade down from a lettered Swan Song to a limited Swan Song.......?

Comes down to money really. I want to finish my Masters degree without anymore student loans.

I've rationalized it that the lettered is an unnecessary luxury, while the limited will satisfy my collector's compulsion!

Does anyone have the Wolf's Hour re-release, I'd like to see some pics.
I thought it would have been easy to find it in the secondary market after release but I haven't seen it.
thanks.
I'm glad he's writing again.

Mike, check the 'Other Authors You Collect' thread. If you go to the last page of the thread and work your way back I'm pretty sure you'll find a couple of pics of the lettered edition not too far back. I have the new trade edition but haven't taken a pic yet.

A couple more details about The Hunter from the Woods: Vincent Chong will be contributing an original cover, plus a full-color illustration for each of the stories in the book.

And there will be a trade edition released at a later date.

This forum is primarily dedicated to collecting related to Stephen King. To my knowledge the only author thread we have is the Joe Hill thread. I'm not certain we are ready to have dedicated threads to any and every author in the Collecting market.
We have the "Other Authors You Collect" thread. I am open to listening to members opinions, but this thread will likely be merged today.

I debated about that when I opened it, but there was so much recent discussion both in "Other Authors You Collect" and in "Your New Pride & Joy" that I thought things might be getting lost. Whatever you decide is, of course, fine with me....

And Bob, I'm from Kentucky, which most people would probably consider the woods....

I've not had Paducah Pink, which I'm guessing is a BBQ?

And no, the title of the new book is not a reference to me (though it is fun for me to type it). ;)

I've added these photos to the Book Cover Gallery on RobertMcCammon.com (http://www.robertmccammon.com/gallery.html) and thought you might like to see them.

Randall has already posted photos of the lettered edition of The Wolf's Hour, but here's one showing the black book (along with the dustjacket and traycase):

And I don't think anyone posted photos of the red-leather lettered edition of Mister Slaughter:

Unfortunately, the populace-at-large needs to be told which authors are "bestselling authors," apparently....

It's a good thing that I'm not going to start collecting McCammon proofs. As is the case with King, just too many complications!

I actually thought I had a proof copy of Mr. Slaughter, but when I pulled it out, it turned out to be the trade edition. I think I'll start looking for a proof copy, just to complete the set. I'm not really interested in the different varieties of the Speaks the Nightbird proof. From the picture, I think I have the thinner version.

Subterranean Press: Early Word on Robert McCammon's THE FIVE from STEPHEN KING and PUBLISHERS WEEKLY (http://subterraneanpress.com/index.php/2011/03/14/early-word-on-robert-mccammons-the-five-from-stephen-king-and-publishers-weekly/)

You can click on the link above to read it all, but I thought this was worth posting here:

The first, an unsolicited note from Stephen King:
“The Five isn’t just Robert McCammon’s best novel in years; it’s his best novel ever. Terrifying, suspenseful, unputdownable, and full of rock and roll energy. It’s also uplifting, a book you’ll finish feeling better about your world, your friends, and your music. Here’s one you’ll beg friends to read.”

I don't know if there's another subforum here where this would be appropriate; feel free to copy it....

I like pretty much everything McCammon has written. For some reason I felt let down with GONE SOUTH, though. I probably need to reread it. I remember at the time really liking the beginning and getting to know the characters. It seemed to have a lot of potential but just didn't deliver (for me anyway).

I thought of it as "popcorn". Enjoyable, hard to stop, but leaving no lasting "deep" impression. At the time it was a refreshing change from McCammon's serious novels. Almost the same impression that "Fires of Eden" by Dan Simmons provided.

I would agree with you that there wasn't any real depth to the story although there were a few aspects that have stuck with me over the years. I thought he did a great job in giving a fast paced and fun piece with enough characterization to move the story along.

I started reading Robert McCammon's books thanks to this thread and i have enjoyed all of the books so far. I really enjoyed the Matthew Corbertt series and was glad to hear another book will be coming out next year.

My question to those you collect his books is why is it so had to find a hardcover copy of "The Queen of Bedlam"? I was able to find a hardcover copy, signed, of the first book "Speaks the Nighbird" for a very reasonable price. The second book is very hard to come by.

That is a very good question. I pre-ordered a signed copy in 2007 from an Alabama bookstore where McCammon was doing a signing and have never really thought about it since. I did a quick search on ABE and found that hardcover editions were listed at $100 and up. From looking at the other listings it appears that Pocket Books issued a hardcover edition and a trade paperback simultaneously. Both editions carry the number line on the copyright page that goes down to "1." In my experience when publishers do that they print large amounts of the trade paperback and relatively few of the hardcovers. I'm not sure of the reasoning behind issuing the dual editions but it appears that the hardcover print run was relatively small. Thanks for bring that up. Maybe Hunter Goatley has some more insight into this and will add his thoughts.

Sorry for my delay in replying. I'm not sure how I missed the last few posts here.

Regarding the hardcover of The Queen of Bedlam: Pocket Books intended to publish the book as a trade paperback, but I was told they were going to publish a "limited number" (not a limited edition, just a smaller print run) of hardcovers "for the collectors." Both books were published at the same time. The ARC they published was an extremely nice trade paperback with high-quality paper. Unfortunately, when the actual book was published, the hardcover turned out to be one of the cheapest-looking hardcovers I've ever seen. It was ridiculous. The paper was incredibly cheap---cheaper, even, than the paper used in the trade paperback (and both many grades below the paper used for the ARCs). In fact, the hardcover actually weighed less than the trade paperback. It was embarrassing how cheaply-produced the hardcover was.

Even the dustjacket was made as cheaply as possible, without the raised-lettering or shiny gold paint of the title on the trade paperback edition. The dustjacket looks like a bad scan of the trade paperback cover (and for all I know, may well be).

On top of that, for reasons known only to Pocket, about one month after the book's release, Pocket dumped the entire unsold hardcover stock to a discount book wholesaler. Those hardbacks were sold as remainders via overstock.com and a couple of other places and disappeared within days.

My understanding is that they printed about 3,000 hardcover copies of The Queen of Bedlam, and about 2,000 of those were dumped as remainders (again, only one month after the book was released). To make matters worse, Pocket lied about what they had done. When booksellers initially tried to re-order the books, Pocket told them they were sold out. But that was actually before they showed up on the remaindered-book sites. To this day, we have no idea why they dumped the books so quickly after the release or why they went as cheaply as they could (for hardcovers priced at around $30).

The low print-run and the subsequent dumping has resulted in exorbitant prices for the hardcover edition, if you can even find one.

Needless to say, this experience is one of many reasons that McCammon moved away from Pocket for a second time. Unfortunately, the initial contracts for several of the books means that Pocket still has control and is still doing screwed-up things, like not releasing Speaks the Nightbird as an ebook, even though they released The Queen of Bedlam as an ebook; refusing to record unabridged versions or sublicense audio rights to Boy's Life and Gone South and instead re-releasing their 3-hour abridged audio versions originally released in 1991 and 1992; reprinting several of the books in new trade paperback editions, but doing nothing to ensure that they made it to bookstores....

The first four books will be released as ebooks by Subterranean Press in the coming months, with Baal due later this month, I think. With these releases, all of McCammon's books will be available in ebook format except for Speaks the Nightbird.

And on November 15, Audible will be releasing an unabridged audio recording of Swan Song, read by Tom Stechschulte.

It's weird how things work out. For years, I thought I knew about all of the Russian editions of Robert McCammon's novels. Then, a couple of years ago, out of the blue, I discovered a 1994 translation of Gone South that I had not known about. All of the Russian sites I knew about had never made any mention of this book. And as of today, I actually own a copy of it.

So I went from not knowing about it for some 15 years, to knowing about it but assuming I'd never see one, to actually owning one.

Hunter your the Mccammon expert, do you know if any of the upcoming Subpress reprints are going to feature extra content other than artwork ala Wolfs Hour? Also does Mccammon have any plans for any sequels to his previous horror novels?

goathunter
12-06-2011, 12:21 PM
The answer to both questions is: No, not as far as I know. The main reason for doing the limiteds (aside from the fact that Bill wanted to do them) of those first four books is that they've never had limited editions before (well, They Thirst had the Dark Harvest limited, but the others didn't, and in fact, there were never U.S. hardcovers of any of the first three (Baal, Bethany's Sin, and The Night Boat).

As for sequels, McCammon didn't really plan to write a sequel to The Wolf's Hour. When Subterranean wanted to do the limited of the The Wolf's Hour, they wanted McCammon to write a new introduction for the book. He started to do so, but was bored by that, as he'd written a couple of introductions already. He thought it would be more fun for the reader if he wrote a new story featuring Michael Gallatin, and what he anticipated would be a 20- or 30-page short story became the much-longer "The Room at the Bottom of the Stairs." He had so much fun doing that, that he decided to write more short stories, and that's how The Hunter from the Woods was born. Back when The Wolf's Hour was first published, he had envisioned a series of books, but Pocket wasn't interested in a series, so he put the idea aside. The short stories in The Hunter from the Woods allowed him to explore some other facets of Michael's life.

In general, though, he's all about going forward, and he has numerous ideas for the Matthew Corbett books and contemporary novels (including the horror/sci-fi "hellzapoppin'" novel he's working on now) and has no interest (at this time) in writing a sequel to any of his other, earlier books.

From the McCammon website:

A few months ago, we announced that a new Robert McCammon short story would be published in a new anthology celebrating the work of Ray Bradbury. The title of the anthology is Shadow Show: All-New Stories in Celebration of Ray Bradbury, and it is edited by Sam Weller and Mort Castle. The book will be published in trade paperback by HarperCollins on July 17, 2011. It can be pre-ordered from Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Shadow-Show-All-New-Celebration-Bradbury/dp/0062122681/tag=theroberrmcca-20).

A signed, limited edition of the book will be co-published by Guantlet Press and Borderlands Press. The limited edition is available for pre-ordering now. It comes in two states: a limited edition signed by all authors except Mr. Bradbury ($75) and a lettered edition signed by all authors including Mr. Bradbury ($500). You can read more about the book and place your order on the Gauntlet website (http://www.gauntletpress.com/cgi-bin/gauntletpress/perlshop.cgi?ACTION=ENTER&thispage=ShadowShow).

A new vampire novella by Robert McCammon, I Travel by Night, has been announced by Subterranean Press. You can pre-order it and read an excerpt here (http://subterraneanpress.com/store/product_detail/i_travel_by_night).

I think the reason there are copies available is due to the fact that they have so many different editions. Lettered, signed/numbered, trade signed with end papers, trade regular, ebook etc etc.

Any idea if Sub Press will be doing limiteds of the first 2 Corbett novels?

They'd like to, and McCammon would like for them to, but Pocket holds the rights to them, and they'd have to agree to allow Subterranean to do it. There have been discussions, but nothing decided yet....

Not that I would have the funds for the lettered but I thought that was odd as well. I almost picked up a signed copy but the price was a bit much (for me) considering that this is a novella. Cool sounding and looking book and I will probably buy the unsigned version in the future.

Hopefully will be able to provide details and photos later this week. I lost out on one of these about 10 years ago on eBay because I was stupid. And have never seen another until today. Unfortunately, no. The last time I talked with him about it (a few months ago), he said that thinking about that right now would be a step back, and he was more interested in finishing the new books. I've only re-read two books in my lifetime...THE STAND and THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE. Beginning today with the reading of SWAN SONG, that list now has a third book on it. I think the first time I read this was back in the early '90s, so it's been around twenty years. Not coincidentally, these three books make up three of my top five books of all time.
