I'm in Vine and I could get a copy of "The Border" if I wanted, but I'm not motivated enough...plus other books to read.

I actually haven't read McCammon in years. I read all his books up to "Gone South" but then when he went on his hiatus, I guess I did too.

"Usher's Passing" is a very underrated example of his earlier work.

You really should read "Speaks The Nightbird." I can't recommend it highly enough.

Agreed. Speaks the Nightbird is the best of the Matthew Corbett novels. I can't think of too many of McCammon's books I'd rate higher. Boy's Life for sure, but that's about it.

I'll add my praise to that book, and all the Matthew Corbett books by McCammon. Speaks the Nightbird was the first McCammon I read, and that turned me on to the rest of his older stuff, which is recommended as well!

Thanks very much to biomieg here, these Dutch paperbacks arrived in the mail today. Robert McCammon's Boy's Life and MINE.

Also in today's mail, this Czech edition of Stalkers, which includes the McCammon short story "Lizardman." It took almost three months to make the trek from the Czech Republic to Kentucky. As often happens, I finally emailed the book dealer last week to verify that the package really had been shipped on January 22. A week later, it shows up. (But he really did ship it on January 22.)

Cool, why did they change the font? All the others have the same font.

It always blows my mind that these book companies spend all this money on new illustrations, great covers, awesome paper and the title font is always a big turd. Why not have the title illustrated or something.
Pay the illustrator to do a painted/illustrated title treatment and use that. Sorry pet peeve of mine.

Thanks for the blue world info guys.

Blue World is one of my all-time favorite short story collections. I read it when it was published way back, in 1989, and was terribly impressed.
Stinger didn't impress me half as much, but the limited is a must-buy of course. After King, McCammon's my #2 favorite author. No wait, that's Stephen -Thomas Covenant- Donaldson. No-no, I meant Dan Simmons.
Steven Erikson?? GRRM???

You're not the only one; that's been bugging me for a while as well. Seems like Sub Press et al used to be more consistently creative with their title fonts than they are these days. A shame.

Thanks Hunter!! I got my order in for the numbered and the lettered edition before the latter sold out!
The artwork on the cover of the S/L edition more than makes up for the ridiculous Times New Roman font they used. I actually really dug the original font Pocket Books used on the mass market PBO!

I can't believe the lettered sold out already. Thank goodness i got my order in as I would hate to have the set broken up. Weird how they sell out quickly when announced, but then do not move quickly or for much more on the after-market. Also, BlueWorld took a long time to sell out for Sub Press as lettered. Not sure what any of this amounts too...other than I am happy I secured my copy!

NoahM
05-06-2015, 06:21 PM
Yeah, Phalucha - - such are the vagaries of the small press! You'd think that in the case of lettered editions for a given author, the same 26 or 52 people would consistently buy these books, or at least a fairly large percentage of them would. . .interesting that one run of lettered editions sells out in a day, and another takes months!

frik

BlueWorld took a long time to sell out for Sub Press as lettered.

Not sold out yet: still 11 copies left.
Which I find unbelievable, as it's one of McCammon's best.
Must be because it's a short story collection.

Yes Blue World is the only one I bought, since it is one of my favorites as well.
I just watched all of the 80s Twilight Zones and Nightcrawlers still holds up. It;s interesting that they point out to that episode is what turned people off to that revival, not sure if that's true or not. It is a shame that they don't get the respect they deserve bc there are some truly awesome episodes from that era.

I guess SubPress didn't want a repeat performance of the way McCammon's Blue World is selling - or isn't, really: still, after many months, 11 lettereds left. Undoubtedly because it's a short story collection.
Too bad really, as Blue World is a much better book than Stinger.

It's annoying to those of us (myself included) who got in on the first batch of 26 copies. . . .but if I had missed out on those 26, I'd be overjoyed at the second 26 being offered. Guess it depends on where you stand. If I end up getting a double letter copy, after having secured one of the original 26, I'll be pretty peeved for sure. . .

3 illustrations for WH? That's kind of a waste. Especially for such a long book. Why even have any? Just do illustrated endpapers and be done with it.
Thanks for the info, I always think SP doesn't add all the illustrations to the purchase page but it seems they did this time.

Anyone got their copy of the limited of The Border from CD? I got a shipment confirmation from them the got another email saying that "We accidentally emailed shipping notices to collectors who ordered THE BORDER Limited Edition. We do not have this edition yet, but we’ve been told to expect it in a few months when the slipcases are completed. You can ignore the shipping notice you received." That was on 6/22.
Then I got the email from SP stating that they'd finished shipping them and were offering the extras for sale. Left me a bit confused that we'd need to wait "a few months" for something that was already shipped out.

goathunter

On June 22, Subterranean did not have an expected delivery time for the limiteds, hence the "a few months." That turned out to be a much shorter time. I assume that Subterranean has now shipped the books to Cemetery Dance, so CD will have them before long. However, Dan Hocker posted this in response to a similar question on Horror Drive-In:

Most of the signed trade's for The Border have shipped. There was a bit of a shipping mixup which has since been fixed and the rest will hopefully be shipping soon. The Deluxe Limited edition of The Border has not arrived from Sub Press yet. We are pretty bogged down in the warehouse at the moment shipping December Park, Dark Advent and two more books that just arrived, plus all the orders from our 4th of July sale, so things are gonna be a little slow for a bit.

Yeah, I don't understand the rationale behind the email stating that it was shipped (including a tracking number) and the later email three days later which retracted the shipping notice and stated "but we’ve been told to expect it in a few months when the slipcases are completed." :orely: Weren't the slipcases completed when SP shipped theirs? Something just seems really weird with the whole situation.

Will post back for sure with an update.

I'm curious if a delay here is in any way related to the shipping issue in June a couple of people have mentioned. I was affected by the issue, where the trade edition was accidentally shipped to those who'd ordered the limited, but CD caught it quickly it seems, stopped shipment and contacted those whose packages had already shipped, providing return labels to send back. Was beginning to wonder if their system showed my order as delivered, somehow related to this initial issue but if others are still waiting that's probably not the case.

When I looked at the e-mail flyer that I got with the shipping notice, I saw there were a couple of lettered editions available. I bought one of them since that was the edition I had wanted when I originally did the preorder (but was sold out at the time), but there is still one left, if anybody is interested. Stinger was the first McCammon book I read when I was a little kid, so I've got a soft spot for it.

I bought one of them since that was the edition I had wanted when I originally did the preorder (but was sold out at the time), but there is still one left, if anybody is interested. Stinger was the first McCammon book I read when I was a little kid, so I've got a soft spot for it.

I ordered a lettered edition of Stinger today. A little surprised it was still available.

I know, right? I had just been planning on buying it on ebay whenever someone listed one, but I'm always happy to get it through the publisher if I can. I actually received my numbered S/L Stinger yesterday and I'm pretty pleased with it. But now I'm really looking forward to the lettered edition. If anybody gets a shipping notice for their lettered or knows when they are generally expected to go out, please post it here!

I just bought signed copies of four of the Corbett novels from the bookstore in Alabama that carries his books. All were retail price but they have Queen of Bedlam listed for $269. Any clue why that one is ten times more than the others?

There was a limited number of hardcovers published by Pocket. Note that it was not a limited edition in the normal collector's sense, but only a few hundred? thousand? copies were printed. Then Pocket remaindered the books after they'd only been for sale for about a month. That meant that there are not that many hardcover copies of The Queen of Bedlam out there, and prices for the existing copies went up. Unsigned copies were very rare on eBay before Subterranean Press published their limited edition. They tend to show up now for considerably less than the $200+ they used to command.

The hardcover edition is crap. It is quite possibly the most cheaply-produced hardcover that I own. The paper was really low-quality---it's shocking how light the 700-page book is---and the dust jacket looks like a bad photocopy of the trade paperback cover. Just a terrible production and not worth even the list price Pocket originally charged for it.

Even thought it's not a first edition, I would urge you to pick up the Subterranean limited instead. Camelot Books has copies for $175, which is still expensive (the original list price was $125, but it's sold out from Subterranean), but a much nicer edition.

One of the best, IMO. Coincidentally, I just posted a link to this review on the Robert McCammon FB page (https://www.facebook.com/author.robert.mccammon). From the closing paragraph of the review:

BOY’S LIFE is a special novel. It is beyond excellent. Beyond a classic. In my opinion, BOY’S LIFE is one of the best novels ever.

No spoilers.

Probably one of the best books mccammon ever wrote. It's like a book of short stories that interweaves into a whole novel. It's very well done. It kind of has that 'power of lost youth' feel of IT, but without Pennywise. A great read.

I've been working my way through a number of his books and would say that for King fans they might like "Swan Song" and "They Thirst" if you prefer horror. "Stinger" for sci if. And "Mine" or "The Five" for the less supernaturally inclined. I've really enjoyed them all though. The great thing about discovering McCammon so late is that there is an entire body of work to catch up on.

My memory is hazy on this (as it is for many things these days, it seems). Wasn't the trade hardcover with the low publishing numbers published simultaneously with a trade paperback? Didn't that partially explain the relatively low numbers produced and sold for the hardcover edition?

And the Sub Press limited may be a nicer production but I don't think it replaces the Pocket Books hardcover. First is first and the Sub Press edition ain't the first.

Yes, the trade hardcover was published simultaneously with the trade paperback. Pocket planned to do only a trade paperback, but near publication date, they told me, "We're going to do a limited number of hardcovers for the collectors." And then they published the junk that was the hardcover. So yes, it was simultaneous, but the low numbers produced were because Pocket never planned to do a hardcover. And the even-lower numbers sold were due to Pocket remaindering the books about a month after publishing them. (I discovered they'd done that when I found 100 copies on Overstock or Book Closeouts (I can't remember which) for something like $5.)

And the Sub Press limited may be a nicer production but I don't think it replaces the Pocket Books hardcover. First is first and the Sub Press edition ain't the first.

That's true. It depends on if you want the true first or the nicest book. I would never pay $269 for the Pocket hardcover, true first or not (of course, I already have a copy and can say that easily).

As someone who discovered McCammon this year (via SubPress's ebook Humble Bundle offering,) I'm still trying to complete my collection (albeit VERY slowly.)

When it comes to nice hardcover editions of the Corbett series, did Sub Press offer trade versions (signed numbered aren't a necessity, and my wallet says NO anyway) of them all. I found a bookstore in Alabama that seems to have quite a few HC versions signed (probably the same one that's not mentioned by name above.) I haven't looked too hard at eBay yet (although I did score a Sub Press copy of Blue World for a sweet price (the signed/numbered version) awhile back.)

Not as busy as this year was, I hope - that was insane: The Border, Stinger, Blue World - a grand total of 7 books, counting each and every state.
Mind you, I'm not complaining, but these lettered editions don't come cheap.

Interesting to note that there is no pre-order period for the lettered edition stated. I understand that since copies of the numbered edition still remain for The Providence Rider there is no need for that edition. But the lettered edition of The Providence Rider is long sold out and with only 26 copies for Freedom Of The Mask I wonder if some lettered copy holders of The Providence Rider will be disappointed?

BTW, I am really looking forward to reading this one. The last one had a cliff hanger ending and, truth be told, I am a bit worried for Matthew's safety.

This SubPress Queen is a reprint from the Pocket Books edition. Don't really understand why that would make a difference. I mean, if you're collecting the Corbett lettereds, Queen's part of the set.

It was just announced formally this morning. frik alerted the forum that the pre-order page was up yesterday. I suspect it will sell out and probably soon. Lettered editions of The Providence Rider have been sold out for quite some time and sequentially Freedom of the Mask follows The Providence Rider. Usually there is a period of time (at least a week or so) for owners of the current lettered book to order the next one. Not everyone checks websites daily like a lot of us do.

For completeness, here's the announcement and cover for Freedom of the Mask. The art is by Vincent Chong.

Matthew Corbett is back in Robert McCammon’s Freedom of the Mask (http://subterraneanpress.com/store/product_detail/freedom_of_the_mask), an over 500 page adventure set in 1700s England. McCammon’s books are our most popular releases each year. Read on for the full details.

About the Book:

Important Note:As we have copies of the limited edition of River of Souls still available, there is no exclusive preorder period for Freedom of the Mask. If you want a matching number copy, please order ASAP, and mention your number in the comments section when checking out.

The year is 1703, and Matthew Corbett, professional “problem solver,” is missing. Last seen by his friends in New York before he departed on a lucrative, seemingly straightforward mission for the Herrald Agency in Charles Town, he’s been too long absent. His comrade-in-arms Hudson Greathouse has an increasing sense the young friend he thinks of as a son must have met with some unexpected peril.

Following his hunch, Greathouse retraces Matthew’s steps only to find him first presumed dead, then accused of murdering a young woman and apparently en route to London with a devious Prussian count last encountered on Professor Fell’s Pendulum Island.

Little does he know that Matthews’s circumstances are growing worse by the second. For when Matthew arrives in the bustling squalor of Londontown, he’s come shackled, charged for the murder of Count Anton Mannerheim Dahlgren. No matter the lack of body, presumed lost to the ocean. He soon finds himself locked up in the infamous Newgate prison, and has drawn the interest of a mysterious mask-wearing vigilante accused of several gruesome murders. Greathouse and the woman Matthew loves, Berry Grigsby, travel across the high seas to England to aid their friend, but it is impossible to know whether they will reach him in time to save his life.

Freedom of the Mask is the sixth installment in bestselling author Robert McCammon’s acclaimed series of standalone historical thrillers featuring the exploits of a young hero the USA Character Approved Blog has called “the Early American James Bond.” The most surprising and ambitious volume to date, this is a novel filled with unpredictable twists and a note-perfect depiction of early 1700s London. Fans will not want to miss Matthew Corbett’s most dangerous adventure yet.

The Limited Edition will contain an exclusive bonus novella-over 22,000 words long-featuring Hudson Greathouse’s visit to “The House at the Edge of the World.”

Lettered: 26 signed, deluxe bound copies, housed in a custom traycase: $500
Limited: 474 signed numbered copies, bound in leather, with the bonus story, artwork not in the trade hardcover, and housed in a custom slipcase: $125
Trade: Fully cloth bound hardcover copies: $26.95
Trade (signed): 1000 copies of the trade edition have been signed by the author: $26.95

Minor correction:

sequentially Freedom of the Mask follows The Providence Rider.

Freedom of the Mask sequentially follows The River of Souls (which I know you knew).

Thanks, Hunter. Of course you are right. My mistake. My wife and I are really excited that the new Corbett novel is nearly here. Any length of time after a cliff hanger ending is too long. Of course I waited over six years for King to get the ka-tet off of that damn train Blaine so this wait really hasn't been too long.

Should be a good and busy year for McCammon collecting!

Not as busy as this year was, I hope - that was insane: The Border, Stinger, Blue World - a grand total of 7 books, counting each and every state.
Mind you, I'm not complaining, but these lettered editions don't come cheap.

From what I've read, we'll be getting the Matthew Corbett book, the second I Travel By Night plus one of the previously published, older McCammons.
Boy's Life would be awesome.

sk

I know this is a late response, but I was just reading this and I totally agree: a S/L Boy's Life would be awesome. I would shell out the money for a lettered one if it was produced. Hint hint, Sub Press...

The $500 price for the lettered seems a bit high. I think I paid half that for the lettered Stinger, but good for McCammon if his books are heating up. Curious why none have been turned into movies.

RichardX - the reason the lettered Mask is pricier than Stinger is because the print run is smaller - 26 copies vs. 52 of Stinger. Nightcrawlers was a TV episode way back when, but I agree, McCammon is criminally unmined as far as film/TV adaptations go!

I went ahead and ordered signed trade editions of all of the Corbett hardcovers (except a signed PB of Bedlam.)

While the fancier signed numbered ones are more prestigious, I still want to read them. Maybe one day I'll track down the S/N versions but they aren't a required. Kind of like how I, trying to collect Lansdale and have to keep away from from the limiteds to stretch my dollars further.

Good luck, TacomaDiver, in your McCammon quest. You have many, many amazing worlds to discover.

Probably because there already is a trade edition. The Five, The Border and the last few Matthew Corbett novels were all first editions of the book as far as I know. SP did a trade for those because there wasn't a previous trade edition.

I think your reasoning is sound. Still, with the new illustrations an affordable trade edition would probably have sold well. I wonder if there are contractual issues that we don't know about, previous rights, etc.?

WeDealInLead is correct, Subterranean doesn't normally do trade editions of books that aren't original publications. On top of that, Bob is correct that any trade edition would have to be done with the cooperation of Simon & Schuster, who probably wouldn't have allowed them to do one, even if they'd wanted to. As it is, this limited edition is being done by arrangement with S&S.

Regarding River of Souls:

I liked it but it really didn't advance the narrative of Matthew, Professor Fell, Hudson, etc. much at all. More of a side story it seemed to me. And the cliffhanger ending didn't help any. Freedom of the Mask on the other hand gets us right back to the main story and I like it a lot.

They are expensive. I had not checked prices on this book in years but I just looked on ABE and saw some for sale at prices that surprised me. But isn't that what the word limited means? When do we draw the line on "anniversary" editions which are essentially reprints no matter what you call them?

Ask the King publishers. ;) A Subterranean limited shouldn't affect the value of the Dark Harvest limited, but it probably will.

Right now, this is all speculation, but Subterranean did published a new limited edition of They Thirst, and as far as I've seen, it hasn't affected the prices of the Dark Harvest limited in any way.

I'm sure I would buy a new edition of Swan Song too. IMO, it is a great topic for discussion. It is discussed often in the threads dealing with Stephen King. A lot of it is a pure money grab by the publishers. This seems especially true with some of the recent, very expensive, signed copies by PS Publishing. Skeleton Crew and Thinner are not anyone's favorite King books and yet they are selling out at over $3,000 per copy. At least Swan Song is one of most McCammon fans' favorites.

I'm sure it is, 3k is stupid money to me, but I don't have $500 to spend on a book.
I was tempted to buy the Summer of Night book which is high up on my list of all-timers but even at $250 it's too much. But if I could get prints of the artwork on archival paper in a nice portfolio (non-of that glossy prints that are really just extras when they printed the book, that makes me sick called them "prints") with a good limited number I wouldn't blink. Plus I don't really give a crap about autographs.
Sorry that was a little off topic.
But yea, after getting the PS 20th Century Ghosts I am hesitant to order from them again. The book is "OK" but I don't want just "ok" I want "wow!".

If you don't care what number you get, can you order the limited "Last Train" now or do you have to wait?

You're only allowed to pre-order the lettered or the limited if you own the lettered/limited first book.
I thought there was a two-week period for this....One week to go.

sk

Ordered my copy today!

What is a reasonable price on a limited "I Travel by Night?" Anyone know where one is available?

I found a limited "I Travel by Night." Was a bit surprised how small it is. Even though it is small mine is a real tight fit into the slipcase. In fact I can barely get it in. Is that normal?

Mine's fairly tight as well.

Mine doesn't have any extra room but slides smoothly. Gravity is enough to slowly remove the book with no brodart on DJ.

According to amazon, they will be releasing Blue World stories individually on cd around $10 a piece in July, which is just nonsense. I know they are also on itunes individually hopefully they release a full set at some point.

Interesting. Thanks. I hadn't heard about this. Once before, they announced some CD release that never happened. I can't remember now what it was. I'll see what I can find out.

Thanks, mikeC. I was informed that there will be a Blue World: The Complete Collection CD, it just doesn't have an Amazon listing yet. I expect it'll show up in the next day or so. It will be cheaper than buying all of the individual CDs. Just as there are separate Audible listings for the stories, they're making the separate CDs available for anyone who only wants a story or two.

Thanks Hunter, that's awesome news!
The amazon listing did remind me how much I love the Red House story though, gonna re-read that one.
Thanks again

Does anybody have a slipcase that fits a UK 1st edition of Baal from Chivers Press? Just curious if there's one that's commercially available and/or if somebody has a spare:) Thanks for any help.

I just noticed that the sub press Boy's Life is officially sold out. I think that was relatively fast. Now they just need to make it and send it to me!

Yes, the lettered was sold out practically instantly and the limited last week. Which was totally unexpected as there were roughly 100 copies left last time I checked and they hadn't really moved too fast the last couple of weeks. Then, all of a sudden, sold out.
Like you, really looking forwards to it.

Haha, it's good to know that I'm not the only one that does that. You're right, the last time I looked there were over a hundred copies left. When I saw they were sold out I thought it was strange and just figured I hadn't checked in a while. But maybe they had overestimated their stock or something and then corrected it? Or maybe somebody with deep pockets decided to buy like 80 copies of their favorite book? :)

And the lettered sold out waaaay too fast! I still can't believe I missed it. Damnit!

My copy came with one, but I believe it's a custom job (i.e. not "commercially available")...however, it suggests that perhaps there are more out there to be had.

I believe they sent out an email saying something along the lines of, "We have a distribute that will be buying the rest of our copies, so this is the last chance to buy from us." That may be incorrect, but it is also a good explanation of the sudden "sold out" status.

The complete Blue World collection still isn't listed yet, but the list price on most of the individual story CDs has dropped from $9.99 to $6.99 each.

Thanks Hunter. I bit and bought Red House the other day. Great narrator. Love that story.
Was the last MCorbett book a cliff hanger bc of how long the new one is? My wife was none to happy about that cliff hanger, haha.

As I've said before, every now and then something pops up that I never knew about. Here's the latest example, which is in my collection now. :) It's the size of a MMPB and is the first chapter of MINE.

Anyone ever been to a signing at the Alabama Booksmith? I have a couple older books to be signed and just wondered how accommodating they and McCammon are. Do they get much of a crowd? After my recent King experiences just thought I would ask.

McCammon will sign anything you bring. The Alabama Booksmith is happy for people to bring other books to get signed, too.

For the past few signings, there hasn't been much of a crowd. Thirty people or so, I think.

Freedom of the Mask was officially released Tuesday. It's available in trade hardcover, audiobook, and ebook editions.

Rick McCammon signed books at the Alabama Booksmith yesterday afternoon. Earlier that day, he was interviewed by Alabama Public Television host Don Noble. The 27-minute video interview can be seen on YouTube:

McCammon signed my copies of "Swan Song", "Usher's Passing" and "Mine." Also got a signed copy of the new book. A banner day for my McCammon collection. In the interview, he said the Matthew Corbett series will end with the ninth book and McCammon suggested he would like to take Corbett to Russia before it is done.

I wish I had gone to the signing in Birmingham like last year. I got 9 books plus a poster inscribed. Was a real thrill to meet someone I have admired for so long and he is so generous with readers. Total class act.
