That's good news and band news... but I'll take it! I have the signed edition on order through CD so I'm guessing it's going to be a conservative 8-9 weeks until it finds its way to Canada.
RF, nice score. I'm working my way through McCammon more or less chronologically. The Night Boat is next.

Any value in McCammon ARCs? I don't collect ARCs -- regardless of author -- and don't even like them in my collection, but couldn't help but wonder about the value of an ARC of PROVIDENCE RIDER that I saw at a local used bookstore. I didn't buy it (for the reasons stated earlier), but am wondering if I missed out on a potentially lucrative flip opportunity.

As with all things, the value depends on if you can find somebody to pay you what you want. ;-) That said, that particular ARC isn't particularly valuable (yet). Watching ARCs on eBay, sometimes they sell quickly for a lot, sometimes they don't sell at what I would consider a bargain price. In general, McCammon ARCs sell for less now than they did in the late '80s/early '90s when he enjoyed much greater name recognition.

Yesterday I received my I Travel By Night numbered. I'm not too happy with the fact that the only difference with the lettered edition is the traycase - plus of course the letter.
There should be at least a different dj, and binding.

Frik, I addressed this in my collection thread. SubPress are really into cutting corners to maximize profit. Glued binding on a $75 book? GTFO! That's why I stopped bothering with their signed editions, the signature in itself is worthless to me if there isn't some sort of "upgrade" to the trade edition. At least with I Travel by Night you get a brand new story and two Whelan pieces. With their recent Simmons REPRINTS there are no extras but the new (photoshopped) covers. No slipcase, no illustrations, no introduction. You get a fancy trade for $175 or a novella reprint for $75.
That said, I can't wait to read a new stand-alone story by McCammon.
goathunter
05-23-2013, 06:10 AM
The description on the Subterranean site indicated that only the lettered edition would be leatherbound, but the limited edition is also leatherbound; the trade edition is clothbound. The traycase is a really nice leather traycase, but otherwise, the books do appear to be the same between the lettered and the limited. Whether or not the editions are worth the cost to you is up to you, but the limited and trade editions are bound in different materials.
I'm neither criticizing nor defending, just making additional observations.

I recently found something I didn't even know existed until I saw someone selling it. A promotional poster that Avon put out when they published They Thirst in 1981.
The front:
http://www.robertmccammon.com/images/tt_06_pb_poster1.jpg
The back (sorry for the glare; with the folds, it was impossible to get a glare-free photo):
http://www.robertmccammon.com/images/tt_06_pb_poster2.jpg
If you have trouble reading it, see the post about it on the McCammon site (http://www.robertmccammon.com/2013/06/05/a-blast-from-the-past-marketing-they-thirst-in-1981/).
Look at all that publicity! Now, authors are lucky if a publishers lists a book on sales sheet when it's released....

Forgive the iPhone photo, but I just received one of my remaining McCammon Holy Grails: the 1985 Italian book club edition of Baal. It's generally accepted that the the Firecrest/Chivers Press UK edition is the first hardcover, but they were both published in 1985, and I don't know which actually appeared first. Anyway, this is only the second copy of this book that I've ever found for sale (and even with the exorbitant shipping from Europe, this one was cheaper than the other and in much better condition; it's like-new, and the bag that it's in is apparently its original bag, as it was sealed).

And yes, that cover has absolutely nothing to do with the story!

Some of my recent finds.
Top L->R: The Hungarian edition of Shadow Show (the Bradbury tribue), the UK book The Giant Book of Best New Horror, US paperback of Bad Seeds.
Middle L->R: Hollywood Ghosts, Japanese paperback edition of Boy's Life, Japanese paperback of Swan Song
Bottom L->R: Japanese paperback of Mystery Walk, a different Japanese paperback of Mystery Walk
http://hunter.goatley.com/books/130906-1.jpg
Top L->R: Italian TPB of The Book of the Dead, the previously-posted Italian book club hardcover of Baal, a French werewolf anthology
Bottom L->R: Italian TPB of Hot Blood, French paperback of Boy's Life
http://hunter.goatley.com/books/130906-2.jpg
Two really nifty bits: this copy of Hollywood Ghosts belonged to Karl Edward Wagner; it was his contributor copy. And the copy of Erotic Horror belonged to Robert Bloch; it was his contributor copy, and it has his name stamped on the inside. Both books also include their contributor cover letters.

Lack of information on their website is the least of River City's issues.... ;-)
You can find photos of the limited on the McCammon website here (http://robertmccammon.com/gallery/speaks_the_nightbird.html).
A warning: it's a nice book, but the publisher had never done a limited before, and it shows in the final product. The artwork that's included peters out partway through because they only commissioned a certain number of them. The bigger problem is that the book is big, and the binding didn't always support the book. There were several reports from buyers that their books came with the book separating from the binding. So it's a pretty book, but it's also pretty delicate.
Because they'd never done a limited before, they knew nothing about a numbered limitation. I'm not entirely sure how many limited editions they published, but the books are simply numbered with a number and no limitation (e.g, "No. 38", with no indication of how many there were). I believe 500 were printed, but I don't know for sure.

Happens all the time in the small press
goathunter
11-11-2013, 01:57 PM
That's interesting. I wonder how that happens.
All presses print more copies of the books than the stated limitation, because some of them will be damaged in shipping, some may have printing errors, they need extra copies to provide to the author and/or contributors, review copies, etc. In River City's case, they initially told me they planned to do 1000 copies of the signed limited. I told them I thought that was extremely ambitious, given that McCammon had been away for 10 years and because River City was a small, unknown publisher. I suggested they do 300, but I think they settled on 500. But they never actually told me how many they printed, and when I asked, no one there seemed to really know.
I saw you posted photos of your copy on the CD forum. Since your number was 252, that would suggest that they may still have almost 250 copies of the signed limited sitting around....
Hunter
Joe315
11-11-2013, 05:28 PM
I can't imagine they'd have that many still sitting around but it seems like they didn't have a strong advertising push, and it took me awhile to actually locate their website via google. And when i did it was their old site.
goathunter
11-11-2013, 05:50 PM
AFAIK, the only advertising they did when the book was released was the image from their catalog shown a few posts above and my announcements via the McCammon website. As I said, this was their first limited edition, and they're a very small press. They don't (or didn't) have a large, loyal customer base like Subterranean or CD. They may not have that many sitting around, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if they did.
On top of that, the problems with some of the books that I mentioned earlier (the books separating from the binding) caused some fans to not bother with it.

Been looking for a hardcover copy of The Queen of Bedlam for a reasonable price for a while now. Got the unsigned copy on the left on abebooks. Not 24 hours later a signed copy showed up on ebay for $5 more. Both came in the mail today.
People weren't kidding when they said this was a poorly manufactured book. The paper is crap and the spine looks like it wasn't made wide enough to accommodate all the pages. Terrible quality.

Yep! Fortunately, a limited edition of The Queen of Bedlam will be published by Subterranean Press sometime this year! They mentioned it in an update this morning.

I, too, used to rely on my memory. Unfortunately, I never really started a spreadsheet before my memory starting going, so I have on occasion bought a foreign edition only to go put it on the shelf and find there's already one there. ;) I did recently print out all of the book covers in the gallery on the McCammon site and check off all the books I have---but I've already added another dozen or so that I'm not sure I checked off. So when I count them all (again), I plan to create a spreadsheet.
What makes getting the international books so problematic is the shipping. It's outrageous.
I just ordered that Spanish edition from an ABE seller. :)

The Border is Robert McCammon's new horror/SF novel. Here is what he wrote about it back in May:
Hello, all. I finished The Border about a month ago, but I wanted to wait to announce that until the book was out on the marketplace. I think it’s pretty good, and it’s certainly different from anything I’ve ever written. Hunter has read it and says he thinks it will appeal to fans of Swan Song and Stinger, so that sounds good to me.

I was the publisher of Lights Out! which had a six-issue run, as indicated in the auction.
A little trivia: the sixth and final issue of Lights Out! included part of The Address, a novel McCammon started in 1990 but abandoned because it was too dark. When I decided that the sixth issue would be the last, I wanted to make it special for subscribers who had paid for more issues but weren't going to get them. Production costs had risen to the point that I couldn't offer refunds, so Rick gave me 50 manuscript pages of The Address, and that final issue was sent only to subscribers; no issues were available from the book dealers who'd carried the previous issues.
The point is that there were fewer than 250 copies printed, and who knows how many of those still exist?
Not to take away from the auction, but if you're interested, the first five issues are available as downloadable PDFs on the McCammon website:
http://www.robertmccammon.com/lights_out.html

Vincent Chong's interior art for The Queen of Bedlam can be found on the McCammon site (http://www.robertmccammon.com/2014/08/29/vincent-chong-interior-art-for-the-queen-of-bedlam/).

I try setting my book collecting limit at under $100 per book and this one was over my limit. Do you think you could give me a general idea of where these pictures are in this edition? That way when I'm reading my copy I'll have a little bookmark that says "Check out McCammon's page from Aug 29 for illustration" And only if you have time to do that.
Thanks

Interesting cover. I like it. I am also intrigued as Mr. Hunter stated (over on the McCammon website) that this book would be appealing to fans of Swan Song and Stinger...I Loved Swan Song so I will certainly be keeping an eye out for this book.
I loved Swan Song, but wasn't too impressed with Stinger.
Still, looking forwards to The Border.

Sub Press posted the art for the official dustjacket yesterday...I had to groan a little, not because I don't like it, but because the artist they used is presumably the same one that Centipede uses for so many of their releases, and so it looks like a Centipede book. Not that there's anything wrong with that, per se, but I don't know, I guess I just kind of like each publisher to have their own visual identity, and to use an artist who is that distinct and immediately recognizable...it kind of muddles the separation. Plus, as early as his pbos in the '80s, McCammon's horror fiction has always been textually rich but always fun, in the way that well-done B-movie popcorn movies are. The above proof cover -- which is the one I now wish they would've used, if I'm honest, even if it's not as well-done or visually impressive -- communicates that element of fun...the official one, as seen below, even down to the font, is much on the serious end of the spectrum, which just doesn't scream McCammon to me. I'm kind of nitpicking, I know, and a strong argument could be made for the value of the official one...I was just a bit disappointed, though, for the two reasons I mention. Oh well, one thing remains the same: I'm *very* excited to read it!

8-) No worries! Thanks!
Nice photos, Sir_Boomme!
Yes, David Ho is the artist for The Border, and Centipede has used him for (at least) their Rats trilogy and The Shaft, and yes, they all look the same.
Note that the image above is only the art for the signed, limited edition (and the lettered editions). The trade hardcover edition has the art shown on the previously-posted proof. The limiteds and lettered are supposed to include the trade hardcover art as a frontispiece.
And here's my latest arrival, which came yesterday. Robert McCammon's "Strange Candy" is included. (It's very shiny, and I couldn't get a photo that didn't reflect something, so enjoy my mess of an office! ;-))

Phalucha - wow, does that mean you're actually going to read your lettered edition?? Don't think I've ever met anyone who's actually done that! With The Border, as with all new S/Ls, I order a lettered copy, a numbered copy, and two copies of the trade edition (one to read and one for the shelf). That way, I can spill barbeque sauce or get chocolate fingerprints on my reading copy without worry.

I'm the kind of person who takes a book everywhere. . .out to dinner, on the train, to the movies, etc. Not that I don't think lettered editions SHOULD be read; I'd just know for sure that I would drop mine, spill ketchup on it, or water, or whatever. The book would not survive a reading unscathed. That what reading copies are for! But I'm very impressed by your fearlessness!

I'm in Vine and I could get a copy of "The Border" if I wanted, but I'm not motivated enough...plus other books to read.
I actually haven't read McCammon in years. I read all his books up to "Gone South" but then when he went on his hiatus, I guess I did too.
"Usher's Passing" is a very underrated example of his earlier work.
