This thread is for anything and everything having to do with games. What are your favorites? which ones are you currently playing?

Currently playing Samurai Warriors 2 Empires. It's kind of addictive.

We got stuck on this weird "storm the beach for WWII" game. I can't remember the name, it was pretty fun.

My 14 year old son is chomping at the bit right now to get Spider-Man 3 for the PS2. I think the kid would literally do anything for 50 bucks at this point. :cyclops:

I'm the stereotypical girl when it comes to games - I love me some RPGs most of all. FF, Kingdom Hearts, that sort of thing. However, I also like God of War, GTAs, and Bond games. (Anybody remember Slaps Only mode in, what was it? Goldeneye? OMGhilarious.) I like puzzlers, too - Myst 3: Exile drove me nuts for a while, but I got it now and am working my way through it after having owned it for five years or something. Katamari Damacy cracks me the hell up, too. I mean, really. What the hell? I ask you. Royal Rainbow, indeed.

Ooh, I dig driving games too. Midnight Racer, Gran Turismo, that sort of thing.

Oh hell yeah, little kids go crazy when they see the ads for the Spider Man 3 game. Just look at their faces while they're watching it, it feels like if they'll tear your arm off if you interrupt it.

Rjeso, what's your favorite FF? (and God of War kicks ass, btw)

One of the Medal of Honor games had as its very first board the beach storming battle.

Many video game "experts" consider FF VI to be the best FF of all time.

Right now I'm spreading myself out across three video games : FF 12, Manhunt (BRUTAL game), and Dirge of Cerberus.

I'm the stereotypical girl when it comes to games - I love me some RPGs most of all. FF, Kingdom Hearts, that sort of thing.
Oh Gods! Kingdom Hearts is like some bad fan fiction-turned-game. I mean, honestly? Disney characters mixed with FF characters mixed with original characters? Yuck. The minute I saw Goofy and Donald running around with some girly-boy and Cloud Strife I decided I hated the game. I mean, I saw the storyline, I know it, and I don't like it. Ew.

Aside from that, which is more a rant than anything (and for which I express no appologies, since its my opinion and I am entitled to it) I'm a big Final Fantasy Freak. I've got 4 (American 2, I think), and 5 (American 3, I'm pretty sure), and I had 7, 8, and 9, and now I have 12, as well. (The only ones I hate are X and X-2, which shouldn't exist, because it was supposed to be the final fantasy of that universe.)
I love the Chrono games, too. Chrono Cross, Radical Dreamers, and Chrono Trigger. Oh how I love them. <3
Also, the Mana, or Seiken Densetsu series is awesome as hell. My favorite, of course, being Legend of Mana, the unofficial 4th in the series.

Jeez, this is too big a post for me. XD I'll stop here.

fernandito
05-08-2007, 01:45 PM
I personally love the KH series, and I think that whoever came up with the idea of FF and Disney coming together to form something like this not only has balls, but is a genius.

On another note, I'm about 47 hours into FFXII, and I feel like i still have a lot to go. Anybody here pass FF12 yet?

Candice Dionysus
05-08-2007, 01:48 PM
Well, its your opinion. I still hate it. XD

Nah, I've only clocked 5 hours max on 12. I been playing 4/2. I actually haven't been playing at all, the past few weeks. I've been working and writing and sleeping. ^^;; I should play later.

fernandito
05-08-2007, 02:02 PM
So you just started 12 , eh? The only advice I can give you is - LEVEL UP , LEVEL UP, LEVEL UP

Candice Dionysus
05-09-2007, 05:03 AM
I do that anyways, hon. XD By the time I have 6 hours in on 4/2 I was at level 30. Most of the six hours was leveling. XD

fernandito
05-09-2007, 10:48 AM
Excellent. I can't level up for more than 3 consecutive hours at a time, I get anxious to continue with the story/bored.

Yesterday I poured a couple of hours into Manhunt, and I got to a stage in the game where you shove a meat cleaver into an enemy's balls. Violence <3

I'm the kind of person who has to know what's next in the story. I run through at breakneck pace until I reach some impasse, then I start a new game file and actually take time to level up.

For those who've played FF8 : the junction system....yay or nay?

Fall of Gilead
05-11-2007, 08:25 AM
Junction system for me was the most confusing, giant learning curve to get it right. On the other hand, I thought the X's node board was great.

Anybody play the Fatal Frame serieson PS2?? That's some scary games right there!

fernandito
05-11-2007, 08:39 AM
At first I thought the junction system sucked, but as I progressed through the game I appreciated it more and more. It's also good for those obsessed with micro managing their characters.

Candice Dionysus
05-12-2007, 02:00 PM
Oh my GOD!
I adored the Junction system! I had the hang of it within ten minutes! <333 It was my bitch, for reelz!!
Seriously, I adored the Junction system, I had no problem with it. Everyone always says it sucked, or it was impossible to get the hang of, or it was annoying, blah blah blah, but I really, really loved it. I mean, sure, it was slightly more complex than most equip systems, on certain levels, but that was what made me love it! I had to stop and think, but after a while I was so great with it that I started having trouble with most of the other equip systems. XD Because I played 8 for so long I forgot there was a such thing as a regular equip system. XD
And I still never beat the damned game. I really miss it. My copy of 8 went to gaming heaven when someone borrowed it and I got it back scratched to shit.
And! And someone stole my copy 7, can you believe it?? And I had Tactics, too, but someone stole that one as well. Probably the same someone. [sighs]
And my copy of Chrono Cross, which took my brother and I about a year and a half to find a copy of, also got scratched when someone who borrowed it's sister got ahold of it. I could have kill the lil' bee-yatch, because I never got to beat the game! Rawr!

fernandito
05-12-2007, 02:57 PM
Yeah, I hate lending out games and then getting them back scratched beyond recognition. I let someone borrow FFIX and when I got it back it looked like if it had been used as a frisbee.

I think the easiest leveling up system for any FF game so far has been X, it's just a matter of choosing which techniques you want and select "yes".

Candice Dionysus
05-12-2007, 03:07 PM
I didn't like ten. I don't know. For some reason I totally hated it. I know I hate ten-2 because there should never be a sequel to an FF game, ever, for any reason(!).
But I guess I just hated the plot and the simplicity of everything. I play four hours of it when I rented it a while back, and I never rented it again. Plus I deleted the save file when I gave it back to the video rental place.
Just not my style, I guess.

fernandito
05-12-2007, 03:11 PM
No!! You have to give X a chance! I hated it at first, but then curiosity got the better of me and I ended up playing it all the way through...and I'm glad I did. There's a plot twist in that X that will make your mind implode.

Candice Dionysus
05-12-2007, 03:36 PM
If I don't like the beginning of a game, I won't like the rest of it.
I don't like the characters, I don't like the gameplay, I don't like the storyline, and what I've heard of the rest of it, and I don't like the battle system.
Plus, I have absolutely no curiosity towards anything in the plot, or how it ends, or anything. I simply don't care. So, then, why would I begin to play again?
That was the main reason, I think, that I stopped playing and such. I didn't give a shit about the characters or plot. Hell, I hated the characters, never mind not caring for them!
Its just not a good game, in my opinion. I mean, thats just me.

Candice Dionysus
05-14-2007, 08:35 AM
Haha, very funny.
No, I do feel weird, though.
I mean, I just hated X. I hated it and hated it and still hate it.
But I loved VIII, and adored VII, and didn't really mind IX, and I love IV and V (American 2 and 3?), and XII is pretty awesome (considering I've waited to get it for the last, lets say 5 years, when I saw a teaser for it in a gaming magazine!)...
But X turns me off.

Hannah
05-14-2007, 08:50 AM
FFX was the first FF game I played, so I'm partial to it. But after playing FFX, then FFX-2, then FFXI, then FFXII, I can see how people may like/dislike some of the games.

Candice Dionysus
05-14-2007, 08:53 AM
I started with VII. So I'm in love with that one. But VIII, oh, I adored that one so much.

FFX kicked ass. 9 was the only shitty one. 8 is my all time fav. though. I didn't understand the thought process behind FF9.
"people are sick of all the great graphics"
"So...we should make our games shitty?"
"...erm.maybe..less, umm..ermm..Spaceships?"
"yes, and then a dude with a tail"
"A stupid story about space monkeys with tails and a guy that looks like a Goth Mysterio?"
"perfect...does anyone here still know how to make SNES graphics?"

A year later they came to realize people only think they want shit, but will act suprised and dissapointed if given what they had asked them for ever since 7 came out.

My first email addy/SN was FFX based, it was "GhostofAuron" and my little nerd heart about exploded with how awesome the name was.

I don't think FF9 is as bad as people make it out to be. Lots complain about the graphics, but to my memory, 7 and 8 weren't exactly visual feasts either (excluding the CGI cinemas of course).

Anyway, switching gears a little bit: Resident Evil fans, where you at?

R.E. was good, but I like Silent Hill more, personally. XD Those games scared the shit out of me, whereas with R.E. I was more "Oh, look, zombies. Teehee."
Then again, I've been watching horror movies since I was 4 or 5, so I'm pretty much desensitized.

I was really trying to avoid having to get it through ebay because I have a lingering paranoia when it comes to that site, but I couldn't find it in any of the other billions places that I checked at, so I had no choice but to bid...I have to have this game

I'm a Castlevania fan. Original cartridges of all three NES ones, looking for the original GameBoy ones, have Super IV, looking for Dracula X or Rondo, both N64 ones in original cartridges, and then all the GBA ones in original ones--not the reissues.

Nice. Yeah, CV64 wasn't half bad. I got pissed off at the fucking magic nitro part, but except for that it was great. And Legacy of Darkness was actually pretty fun. The opening level was awesome, and the different version of the hedge maze was nice.

That might get you in trouble in the last fight(s). The quickenings are practically uses against the last string of bosses. You should try to have at least 4 or 5 characters that are at around the same level, you may need 'substitutions'.

I bought Kingdom Hearts to finish it, someone stole it. Never played the second one. Is Kingdom Hearts II worthwhile?

Final Fantasy XII though is awesome. I love the new battle system and how you can see everything and how it's fully 3-d. Definitely infinitely better than the crapfest that was X. Sucks I had to wait eight years since IX for a good final fantasy game. XIII had better not disappoint.

I just didn't like it. My first final fantasy Experience was a little bit of FF8 on the PC when in 98. Then I played seven and IX when I got a playstation, then eight.

Of course, being as I the entire genre of RPG was new to me I was really looking forward to X. I was really into it at first. As the game drug on I realized how much I disliked all of the characters. IX had my favourite characters, I felt their personalities were readily-apparent and I enjoyed how you found more about them as it went. Way to much time was spent on the history of Spira. Auron made these segments boring with long, mono-toned tangents on the history of a field. Almost as bad as Tolkien.

Besides the characters being weak and lacking depth, it felt you had to play for 20-30 hours before the plot really got started. The last five-ten hours of the game were pretty decent. A lot of it felt really uninspired. The battle system was the worst of them all, the sphere system as well. I hated how if you wanted to level people up you had to switch everyone in the battle to do one thing to get EXP points. Tidus was a horrible main character. The whole 'anti-religion' angle was a little over done. Seymour wasn't the least bit intimidating.

XII really isn't much better in terms of characters (although the voice acting is leagues better) but I felt the huge advances in gameplay were great. Doing away with random battles and large 3D environments. I also enjoy the heavy political undertones in XII and how they created a whole new world without overly explaining everything (Auron) and actually letting you explore everything yourself. XII is a massive game and I highly enjoy it.

There's ways to get around steam, and Bioshock is only single player anyway, so there would probably be no issues with needing to go through steam verification for multiplayer.

It is actually quite an amazing game. I bought it for xbox 360. I have been really busy with school and haven't been able to play it as much as I'd like. My roommate bought it for PC and beat it in two days because he couldn't stop playing it. I wish the game would have had multiplayer, but it doesn't at all. The system would be interesting in multiplayer, but the game enviroment really lends itself to a single player experience.

Online multiplayer has killed enough good games. Halo 2 was hailed as amazing BECAUSE of the online play while the game itself was obviously inferior to the original. In EGM they had a 15 page spread on Halo 3's multiplayer. I don't care! I want to know about the game itself!

Ah, multiplayer shooters *reminisces* i played in clans for Quake, TF, CS, tribes and tribes 2 for about 5 years :P our tribes 2 clan was 2nd in the Asia/Pacific ladder, so it wasnt newbie gaming i mean. These games were all awesome and it was when multiplayer FPS games were at their peak, but due to evolving world networks the gaming communities have really changed - FPS gaming suits local communities due to the low pings you need to play smoothly, and local communities dont really exist anymore due to the availability of high speed broadband everywhere. The massive online RPGs are the big boys now and theres not much room for the FPS communities anymore, which probably need a decent 200-300 regular players in the same area to be successful. But i loved em :)

Despite me not liking Metroid Prime for the Gamecube (my only Metroid experience) I wasn't expecting much from Metroid. I can see why people love the games they were just never suited to my tastes. For one, headshots are worth nil which sucks as I always headhunt. The satisfaction of seeing an enemies head exploding is gone, big downer for me. On the Gamecube I found it annoying having to scan things and overall I just got bored with it. Didn't hold my attention longer than a few hours.

However, Metroid Corruption grasped my attention. I think the Wii controls have a lot to do it with. Scanning used to pissed me off but with a simple point it's done. I've played every shooter on the Wii and this one (not as good as RE4 so far) is good. Only an hour or so in I've at least enjoyed myself and I've heard it just gets better. However, as of now, the lack of difficulty is appauling. I watched my friend playing ahead of me and it looked harder, can't wait.

It's good so far. With Medal of Honour, RE: Umbrella Chronicles and Black (FUCKING AYE BEST SHOOTER I'VE PLAYED) coming out it's only going to get better.

Sad no NHL 08 for the Wii. The EGM people who don't like hockey games had a blast with it and is said to be the best ever. Damn.

My favorites would have to be rpgs and shooters. Final Fantasy X is my favorite rpg, second would be Radiata Stories, and third would be Final Fantasy VII, which many of my friends has been harrassing me for the last couple years to sell to them, considering the game isn't made anymore. al'Lan Mandragoran

That's very true. Many of my friends didn't much care for X, said it was "too emo". But... how many spin offs does VII have? I know there's DOC, Chrono Trigger (or some game with Chrono for the first part of the name), and I think a few more. Even one for a cell phone. Besides the movie, and having the game remade for the PSP or DS one.

 Yeah, the mood in FFX did tend to get a bit emo at times, and the fact that Tidus frequently whined about things in an insanely annoying voice didn't help out either. But overall, I think that X had the advantage over VII as far as plot and character development are concerned.

Mattrick
09-25-2007, 12:54 AM
I disagree with you on that. The plot of X was disjointed, went very slow. Parts of it dragged and other parts didn't last long enough. I thought Seymour was a horrible main villain. SIN was kind of cool. The only character I thought did any developing at all was Yuna. The rest of them may have learned a lesson or two each, but she changed the most. Tidus is the worst main character ever, even worse than Van in XII

My favourite (and I know I'm in the minority) is IX. I felt that each character in that game served it's own purpose. Each of them had strong characters all battling their own demons without going over the top. It the most most laughs, the most destructive villain and it was a perfect homage to the old games. I think that's why I enjoy XII as they share a lot of similarities; political story-lines, defined characters and designs and a mix of futuristic and medival overtones.

I think, aside from all my criticisms about the finer qualities of the game it all comes down to one thing; entertainment. FFXII and the new battle system and massive worlds to explore. FFIX blended lighted-hearted escapades with a philisophic storyline. FF8 offered a unique, realism previous games had not.

Mattrick - Seymour wasn't the main villian, Sin was. And although I agree that Tidus was rather annoying at times, I don't think he was that bad a main character. He confronted his ghosts and in the end he did what had to be done, even if it meant killing his father in the process, don't you think that deserves some merit? :)

Oh yeah, and Final Fantasy IX is my favorite FF also. Hell, it's one of my favorite games period, I could never get tired of it. Vivi is the shit!

Yeah, but his father had turned into a freak of nature bent on destroying all of Spira. And all Auron could do was talk about a field for 20 mins.

Damn right Vivi is the shit. I'm pissed because a year or so ago I was playing through it agan when my disc three (best disc in the game) stopped working. I seen a copy at a flea market and this foreign woman was seriously selling a used greatest hits copy of the game for 80 dollars, no word of a lie. 80 dollars for an outdated game, on an outdated system that cost 30 dollars brand new one.

I went to play FFIX a while back and realized that my disc 1 was missing, so I pretty much can't play any of it at all. I guess it got lost in one of my moves. It makes me want to punch a baby in the throat.

Well, shit, Auron had to say something! He only said about 3 other words the rest of the game

Try finding FFIX on Amazon.com, you can probably find it for $20 (excluding shipping and handling)

Nope, but I have heard of them. Fable is that game for XBox right? Some dude with blonde hair that wields a blade, right? And I think Elder Scrolls is that Medieval-ish looking game. Correct me if I'm wrong...

Well, Fable is more of a pick and choose kinda game. You can be evil or good, and your appearance matches your decision. And Morrowind is a medieval sorta game. But its huge... its hard to explain.

I've always wanted to play Fable, it looks like an intriguing game. However my alliance lies with Sony and Nintendo, so

I have to ask... is Tidus really that horrible? Everyone I've ever talked to about FFX says he is the worst FF charactor they've ever seen. Or at least the second worst.

fernandito
10-03-2007, 10:30 AM
I don't think he was a bad character, structurally speaking. I think most people just get annoyed by him because of his constant complaining and bothersome voice. For me , the worst FF character is Yuffie from 7. There is nothing even remotely cool about her, nothing.

Cloud, Squall, Auron and Vincent. Shit, i wanted to put a different list down there to be different, but I can't. that's a great group right there. if there was a fifth spot, I might put ol' Barrett in there. Or Tifa, because she kicks ass and has huge jugs.

Cloud, Fran, Zidane, Vivi

Then again, they're from different systems etc so it's hard to tell exactly.

I loved FFIX's system the best. Problem with the other systems is that eventually (or immediately) every character can use every attack besides perhaps limit breaks. IX only had Vivi able to use black magic, only Eiko/Garnet could use summons and it made battles that much more strategic. Bring back that kind of system. Much better.
