Hi team,
After seeing the recent collection thread by timthegreat, I thought he did such a cool job posting his collection, that I should get off my bum and get some pics of my collection up for you to check out.

I was only introduced to the world of Gift & S/L editions after coming across CD when they released Blockade Billy earlier this year. Prior to that, all I was really doing with my collection was trying to get US 1st editions, which is hard in New Zealand as we only get the UK editions released here in the book stores.

So the following is where I have got to so far. I'm probably the kind of collector who at best will look to complete a set of Gift editions, as I expect the S/L's will be too far out of reach. That being said, maybe, just maybe, I'll convince my wife we really do need a copy of the coffin S/L Stand lol

UK 1st/1st Salem's Lot, and a 1st/1st US Shining. The US isn't in the best condition, but I'm happy its a first

One of my absolute pride and joys, 1993 Easton Press Dead Zone. I love this edition. I need to pick myself up a slipcase from The Collector. The UK standard edition with it.

A later printing 1st edition FireStarter with it's UK companion. The US copy is an OK placeholder until I find a 1st/1st.

The 1st/1st US copy of Cujo does have a couple of small tears in the dustjacket, but perhaps a Brodart cover may help hide those. But then I can always do with an excuse to get a better copy...

Christine is one of my favourite King stories, and so I was please when I picked up this 1st/1st US copy just this year.
On a side note, I was watching the Rodney Dangerfield movie, Back to School the other night, and noticed that actor who played his son was also the actor who played Arnie Cunningham in the movie of Christine. There is a useless bit of trivia for ya.

I think this is a UK 1st/1st of Talisman, and is just a standard Cycle of the Warewolf

A 1st/1st of the US edition Skeleton Crew (that could do with a nice new dustjacket) and a UK book club edition.

I think Tommyknockers (seen here with a 1st edition and a later printing with gold writing that wants to come off), was the first story of King's that I read where I picked up on him making reference to himself. I love it when he does stuff like that.

Word of caution, Measure the Easton Press edition before you buy the slipcase and email Tom first. I know both the US and UK editions fit in his case as I have one for each, but the leatherbound Easton edition may be a hair too big.

I love the Koontz Odd Thomas books. I'm a big fan of those as well.

Also I forgot I had this in another bookshelf.
I grabbed a signed copy from the Overlook Connection (I see they have had some bad press on the forum lately, but they did right by me with this)

Can anyone let me know what the norm is with signed bookplates, in that do most people stick them in to the book, or just leave them loose?

And lastly for today, I wanted to post a picture of this.

Back in 2005 I went to an Alice Cooper concert in Melbourne, and purchased a special package that included 1st/2nd row seats, a backstage pass, and an opportunity to meet Alice after the show and hang out. The picture is of the photo of me and Alice, my backstage pass, my concert ticket, and my favourite album I got him to sign, all framed up. (Well I actually got the Billion dollar note signed as you can see, from the album Billion Dollar Babies)

Now the reason I wanted to post this, is Tim recently posted a picture of a favourite old paperback that he had signed by the author, and it made me think of this album. I too thought of buying something new for Alice to sign for me, but thought it would have more meaning if I got him to sign my favourite album that had actually been listened too.

So Tim, I totally understand why you got your old paperback signed and think that was a much better idea than a new book...

Cheers Tim.

That must have been a heck of an evening! It was such a blast. I'm glad I didn't hit the sauce until after meeting him, as there a few blank spots from the rest of the evening lol

Again slightly off topic, but this is my only other signed album I've managed to get.

Its The Kinks, Low Budget, and was signed by Ray Davies when he came to New Zealand recently for a solo show. I'd love to see him back with his brother playing as The Kinks, but Ray on his own was still amazing.

Haven't read "Born Bad" but if memory serves..Barry Hoffman is the owner/publisher of Gauntlet Press. Among others they produced "He Is Legend" (w/ Joe Hill & SK). I think Barry had a story in that book ....... It seems surprising to me that he did a S/L through CD.......or is that a normal practice?

I think that it is fairly standard for publisher/owners of small presses release their own S/L work through other small presses. For example Pete Crowther (of PS Publishing) has a number of S/L novels and collections published via Subterranean Press, as well as Richard Chizmar (of CD) who has published a couple of chapbooks with SubPress. I think to do otherwise screams of narcissism?

Hi team,

In the photo, which one is Alice Cooper?
Let's just say I'm the short balding guy and Alice is the cool looking rocker

Like your collection, jimimick..........shipping must get AWFUL expensive!!
Tell me about it! Sometimes the shipping is just as much as the book as I want to buy. I have found some good ebay sellers that use the Flat rate international envelops or boxes, but the cheapest I've found for one book is about $15USD (which isn't too bad I guess for a 1st trade I don't have), but CD and Betts need to charge a LOT more for the Gift editions I enquire about. For example Betts has a gift Talisman/Blackhouse I want for only $90, but the shipping is another $79!
When I was in the States last year, I tried to find books I wanted for sale to avoid shipping, and managed a few 1st editions I didn't have. You guys in the States are very lucky, but then you probably think the same of me when you're trying to get UK copies....

I've bought from both Scott and Paul, and keep in touch with Scott quite often. I'm hanging out for the next time I am in Auckland so we can catch up for a beer.

I wish I had figured out this collecting business ages ago, as I've been reading King for about 21 years, and could have picked up some amazing pieces for a lot lower purchase prices if I had of known about S/L etc back then. You must have some gems in your midst if you've been collecting for that long.

I'm in Christchurch. You local?

I've got #159, and the signature is very similar. You have to remember that King does not sign the numbered books--he just signs the limitation page (or, in this instance, the card) which is then placed inside the book.

And congratulations on getting your first signed limited!

It has now been a couple of months since the big earthquake in town. My wife and I have moved in to a new home, while our old one waits for the insurance company to get around and confirm it will need to be rebuilt. Life has pretty much got back to normal, so a week ago I was able to get the King books all unpacked and put back on their shelf. I've removed a few non-King items to make room for future purchases. Here is a snapshot of how things look now.

Thanks to all the thoughts and support I received after the quake.

I think that it is fun to cover my books. Whenever I buy a book and it comes with a cover, I always take it off and replace it with a cover of my own! (For me it has to be Brodart and the cover can not have any writing on the back.)

Hah! That may take a while although I plan on visiting your beautiful country one day. A bit of useless trivia - The Netherlands is divided in twelve 'provinces' and the one I grew up in is called 'Zeeland'.

Wiki quote:

Abel Tasman sighted New Zealand in 1642 and named it Staten Landt, assuming it was connected to land off the southern tip of South America. In 1645 Dutch cartographers renamed the land Nova Zeelandia after the Dutch province of Zeeland. British explorer James Cook subsequently anglicised the name to New Zealand

I am glad to know that I am not the only one who enjoys covering their books. (96 Brodart covers, that is amazing.) I once covered books for 3 hours straight (9pm to midnight) and my husband yelled at me to stop! He that he was afraid my book "obsession" was getting way out of control.

Now I specifically asked the seller if it had any damage, and told him I was aware many arrived with this kind of damage from poor shipping. I was told he purchased this one in a store, and so it had no defects. The shipping he sent it to me in seems suitable to avoid this kind of damage, but i guess it could be possible (hell, anything is possible).

What are peoples thoughts? I'm thinking I need to contact him first and see what he says, but if it turns out he says it was in perfect condition when he sent it, can I try and recover funds from the shipping company? I'm sure he said it would be insured for international deliver...

Randall Flagg
06-14-2011, 04:48 PM
I think you have a noticeably damaged slipcase. Hard to tell if the book or cards are damaged, but I would recommend you promptly and politely contact the seller asking how the situation can be resolved. Just a ballpark #, but the book is designated as a "Collector's Set". To me that means damage that I have seen in your picture significantly lowers the value of the "Set". Perhaps as high as 50%. Issue price was £100.00. I don't see a mention of what you paid.

Jimimck
06-14-2011, 04:54 PM
I actually only paid £125 including shipping to New Zealand, which I thought was a good price. The book doesn't look damaged, but the card package seems to be squished a little. Unsure if they are damaged though. I'm tempted to take the shrink wrap off, but if I have to return it, I should probably do so in the same condition I received it.

So perhaps look to accept a partial refund, and keep the book? Yeah I could live with that...

Thanks Jerome

When my paperback set of UTD arrived from the UK it looked like someone had driven a hi-lo fork into it. After a LOT of back and forth with UPS customer relations in which the bookseller ordered another set and sent it to me, UPS paid the bookseller and said they'd get back to me about taking back the damaged set. They never did and I now have both sets. Don't know if this helps but if the seller has another copy of the book you could try this route.

biomieg
06-15-2011, 03:40 AM
I also got a cheap copy of this book some time ago from a UK seller (I paid £80 + some shipping). It was shrinkwrapped and it came with the exact same type of damage as yours, James. In all fairness, the seller did tell me there was some damage but it turned out to be more extensive than I thought. I didn't try to get my money back as the book and cards were fine and I was happy to get a King S/L for a low price. But yes, maybe I should have done something about it.

I hope this gets resolved!

Jimimck
06-15-2011, 01:28 PM
The seller has confirmed that that damage wasn't there when he sent it, and so it must have happened in the recent shipping. The packaging looked pretty good, but I have no reason to doubt him. He says he is going to talk to Royal Mail, as it was indeed insured. He also suggested I contact my local post office, as I may need to lodge a complaint/issue with thm as well. Not sure if my post office will take any responsibility since it was insured through the overseas carrier, but I'll pop down today and have a chat.

Thanks for the advice guys, will let ya know how I get on.

I do have to say though, I am happy to have another S/L in my collection, and think the UK UTD is much better than the US one!

Jimimck
06-16-2011, 01:43 AM
Update: Seller has been in touch with Royal Mail to lodge a claim. Their website says it can take up to 90 days??? He is guessing that 90 days is for lost mail, and is hoping it will be a lot quicker for damaged items. He still expects the process to take a few weeks.

I just wanted to know from anyone who has gone through this process if this time frame is typical? Just worried that if I let this time go by, if the result is not favourable, I may have waited too long to follow other options (paypal/credit card).

ur2ndbiggestfan
06-16-2011, 01:52 AM
90 days sounds right to me, that's at least how long my UTD paperback problem took to get sorted out. And now I'm working on getting a UK FAITHFUL problem sorted out, the book never even got here!

Jimimck
06-17-2011, 02:03 PM
If its likely to take that long, I'm really tempted to remove the shrink wrap. I really want to see the book/cards etc.
I'm not sure if I want to go through the hassle of returning the book, if that's what I need to do to get a refund. I'd rather keep the book and just get a partial refund.

Hmmm, what to do, what to do.

I just picked up a set of the Grant slipcases for the DT set, and wanted to pass on a HUGE thank you to Karen.

The set was posted from the US on Fri 29th July and arrived here in town on Monday 1st August. That's just AMAZING service, and I wanted to pass on my appreciation.

(I couldn't find a dedicated Grant thread to post in)

Oh BTW - for those interested in my damaged UK UTD - the shipping company offered a partial refund of 30pounds for the damage to the corner of the slipcase, which I was happy with. So in the end, I paid 70pounds for it, which I think was a great deal.

Glad that got resolved. I also like the UK S/L version of UTD, I have it and desire for the US version.
Cheers pal.

I've actually decided I don't want the US version of the signed edition, since it doesn't have a true limited page, isn't numbered, nor comes with a slipcase. I'm just gonna pick up a collectors edition to fit in my slipcase form The Collector.

LOL ordered mine tonight, only got the collector's edition cause I found it on ebay for $6 a couple months ago, slipcase was 3x more than the book.

I ordered one of the $6 collectors editions, when it showed the seller had 7 left, and a month after the auction I got a "we stuffed up" email and they refunded my money. I was so pissed off!

Hey guys. Been a while since I posted anything new in my collection, but this was just recently finished for me, and so I thought I'd pop it on here for you guys to check out.

This is by no means as fancy/awesome as the Dolso cases we see here, but I wanted something to protect my DT set on the book case and had it made by a local carpenter.

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f257/jimimck/Stephen%20King%20Books/DTCase2.jpg

It is lined with black felt and is Rimu stained pine.

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f257/jimimck/Stephen%20King%20Books/DTCase1.jpg

I am going to get some engraving done on the back, like the Dark Tower Series or something. I think it will look really cool once it has something along the back of it (not that you'll see it that often, being on the back I guess...)

I prefer dark woods myself, such as mahogany, but that is definitely a sharp-looking case, despite its simple lines. Possibly its very simplicity and fine craftsmanship is what makes it such a striking piece. Don't forget to take another picture after the engraving is done.

Jimimck
10-10-2011, 01:15 PM
Thanks guys. Yeah it quite simple, but like you point out, I think that is what makes it quite cool. I just gave the guy who made it a simple description of what I was after, and so for someone who knows nothing about book collecting, I think he did a great job.

Will post picks once it's 100% fin.

This is an extremely well made and handsome case, but if I may be so bold, I would have compartmentalized each Edition and gone vertical rather than horizontal. I would also have worked a theme into it for TDT. Dick and I have tossed idea's for this around and never landed on a definitive design. Size and shipping being the biggest factors.

Nevertheless, that is one freaking handsome looking case, my friend!!! Well done!!!!

No it's just lying on a black background.
It's loose (like jagger)

I'm a little annoyed cos the seller rolled it up, but then put it in a box with other items that crushed it, so now it has crease markes every couple of inches right along from edge to edge. I'm trying to get it flat by letting it sit under my Knowing Darknmess for a while...

Yeah all OK at our place, but a heap of the suburbs in town that were hit bad with liquefaction (the mud/water that bubbles out of the ground) have been hit again. I feel so bad for those families, all this happening at Christmas. They'll have to start shovelling the mud out of their properties for a theird time. It's not a pleasent job.

All the shopping malls were closed yesterday - two days before Christmas! talk about an impact on the economy too.
But if the worst thing you can talk about is a bit of mud, closed shops, and a damaged Stephen King book - I guess we have to count ourselves lucky again.

carlosdetweiller
12-23-2011, 03:08 PM
Is it just the slipcase that got damaged? If so, it wouldn't hurt to contact Jerad at Centipede Press. He might have a spare one. That would beat buying a new book. It never hurts to ask. I've had good luck in the past replacing slipcases with damage even at a later date.

The Cujo poster is an original from when the movie was realesed, not sure if NZ or otherwise. The Creepshow is just a modern reprint.

That's my "official" full series DVD box set from Asia. Took me 2 years to watch every episode in order. I missed the last two seasons on TV here in NZ when they played, and so bought that about 6 years ago and took for ever watching from the start. I love the X Files too. Big Fringe fan now.

I am just amazed at how cool this is! Will post pics once it is framed. Speaking of which, any suggestions from you seasoned artwork collectors re waht type of frame would suit this?

Garrell
01-06-2012, 11:04 PM
I would suggest a brown streaked frame around a layed-in mirror frame, then the art work. The mirror subframe would be neat because of the art piece itself:) Basically: brownish frame, camel color matte, mirror sub matte, very light cream matte then artwork. Won't be cheap but very sweet!

Afterthought, mirror part should be smoked mirror as not to detract from the art itself.
