The title of this thread speaks for itself. I freely admit that it is born from boredom and influenced by the same old end-of-year-top-whatever lists that start popping up again these days but at the same time I'm genuinely interested in what you guys have to 'offer'. So here's the premise: just make a list of your favorite collectibles from your collection (anywhere between, say, three and ten items) and feel free to elaborate, add pictures et cetera.

My Top collectibles in no particular order:

UK 'Big Five' (Carrie, 'Salem's Lot, The Shining, The Stand, Night Shift)
Dead Zone Viking proof
Firestarter proof
Danse Macabre proof
Cujo proof
Different Seasons proof
Christine proof
Pet Sematary 1st/2nd state proofs
The Talisman proof
Skeleton Crew proof
Bachman Books proof

*edit: I changed my list recently to reflect changes in my collection (my sort-of high-end items are all sold).

I like the list Bio! And I loooove the 2 Vol. Talisman books, that is such a nice looking production. I'll have to think of my top 5 for a bit. They will not all be King, I think though.

The Gunslinger 1st signed by Whelan
The Stand 1st in a white case from theskcollector
Horns and Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill. Both inscribed to me.
'Salem's Lot in a traycase w/ prints. Not signed by a great looking book nonetheless
The Dead Zone 1st from Easton

Nothing too hard to find but very dear to me.

*edit* Of course your list can also be in 'no particular order' and it may also be your 'ever-changing-list-of-the-day'.

OH MAN!!!!!!!! You have a UK "The Stand"??????? Envy, envy, envy. It's one of 2 or 3 missing from a complete UK collection that I have chosen to "forget" about!!!!

Gee, my UK THE STAND is in mint condition...anyway, my top five favorite or dearest King collectibles are:

1. My MINT 1st/1st of NIGHT SHIFT (just 'cause it looks so pretty)
2. My DOLAN'S CADILLAC proof ( because I got it for nothing as an apology from the publisher for forgetting to send me the limited edition)
3. My SALEM'S LOT 1st/1st with the original unclipped dust jacket (I don't think I have to explain any reasons for this pick)
4. My signed limited THE GUNSLINGER (because I've read that book about 3 times and only paid $75 for it and why I didn't get two more copies I'll
never know....calm down now...)
5. My galley proofs of PET SEMETARY (because of the interesting conversation I had with the dealer I bought it from; neither of us had any idea what
exactly it was or how many had been made. I love mysteries like that!)

Top 5?

1) Signed 1st editions of "Headhunter" by Michael Slade. I have one signed and inscribed to myself, and another that is the first copy ever signed - dated in the month of publication with an inscription and signed by all three authors that made up the pen name at the time.

2) Dark Tower set - I have DTII-VII + LSOE as PC editions of the signed limited. My place filler for the Gunslinger is a 3rd edition with a beautiful remarque by Michael Whelan.

3) Lettered edition of "Trolley No. 1852" by Edward Lee. Published by Bloodletting Press and just an awesome production.

4) Lettered edition of "Swan Song" by Robert McCammon. Published by Dark Harvest Press, its nothing too get excited about aesthetically, but nice to have!

5) Artwork. I have a limited edition lithograph from artist Lasse Hoile (Danish artist who is big in the progressive rock scene); the Phil Hale print from Insomnia en route; and two original paintings en route that have me tickled pink! (One from Alan Clark and one from Alex McVey - more on those in the new year!)

Blimey...

...so many favourites...but here goes (allowing myself only one King item)

1. Grant Gunslinger 1/1 signed by Donald Grant, signed, dated and inscribed by Michael Whelan with a drawing of the Ka symbol and signed, dated and inscribed to me by SK.

2. Scarfeland: A Lost World of Fabulous Beasts and Monsters 1/1 by Gerald Scarfe (fabulously talented cartoonist)... signed to me with a drawing of one of his wonderful 'creatures'.

3. 35th Anniversary Limited Edition (500) of Psycho signed by Robert Bloch, Richard Matheson and, unusually, signed by Janet Leigh + a replica (unfortunately) Psycho lobby card also signed by Leigh.

4. The original painting by Tim White that was to used by the publisher of The Fog by James Herbert.

5. My Scarlett Thomas books (signed, lined and dated) and proofs.

Of course, apart from #1, that will probably change as my mood does.

I would have to say my favorites out what I have right now would be my set of signed Gunslingers. 1st, 2nd and 3rd edition all signed by King !
I have owned (and sold) many of the S/L editions listed here and liked all of them, i actually miss some of them, just decided I liked the 1syeditions better, and signed (not inscribed) 1sts are even better. To me anyway!

Would love to say S/L The Stand (Coffin Book), but Alas, I cannot, nor do i expect to have it in the foreseeable future - could never convince my wife to let me spend the $$$ needed to obtian one. I'd also like to have the S/L Eyes of the Dragon and Skeleton Crew, but they are also in the same category.

Thus my faves are my

Well, there was so much to choose from in my collection between books, art work etc. Some stuff I don't have pictures loaded. Anyway...here is my list (in no particular favorite order):

(1) Michael Whelan remarque of Roland carrying Jake at the Temple of the Oracle done in one of my S/L Gunslingers
(2) S/L New Lieutenant's Rap WITH peace sign necklace, envelope, signed Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon and 2 copies of the SK trivia quiz all issued at the 1999 Tavern on the Green celebration for "Carrie"
(3) Preliminary charcoal sketch of Temple of the Oracle illustration from the original Gunslinger book done by Michael Whelan. The prelim obviously is a concept drawing way before the book was published.
(4) Gunslinger Orange Plume Proof
(5) "Plaster Man" remarque done in a 1st trade of The Waste Lands by artist Ned Dameron
(6) Roland and Aunt Talitha remarque done for me personally by Ned Dameron...before Tippy's project with Ned.
(7) UK Carrie 1st edition signed by King
(8) US Carrie ARC signed by King
(9) US Carrie 1st edition inscribed by King in 1977
(10) Roland remarque done by artist Michael Whelan as part of his Dark Tower remarque project in 1994...started current "craze" of remarques by other artists. This one was done in a S/L copy of DT VII: The Dark Tower

and bonus (11) Michael Whelan's new rendition of Father Callahan...used in King's website Discordia game, using me as the model.

Thanks. The colors in the painting have never been reproduced correctly, IMO. The weird greenish yellow hue is supposed to represent Roland experiencing the early hallucinatory effects of the mescaline. Jerad Walters scanned the painting directly but his very high dollar printer did not have the proper colors to do it so it still isn't quite right in his art book. Jerad said he would have had to invest another $40 grand to get the proper equipment to get the colors just right so, of course, he didn't do that.

Ooooooo very nice. I'm liking this thread. Man, think what you would have if you put all of out stuff together!!!!

I'm thinking The Stephen King Collector's Guild, Museum and coffee shop!

This would actually be an amazing project for someone with the right computer skills: creating a virtual (online?) library/museum with all these great items. This would require a tremendous investment from everyone in terms of photographing/scanning things of course so the chances of it actually happening are infinitesimally small... But still!

Hmmm... before I finish my masters degree I have to complete a "Digital Libraries" course in which we create just that on any topic of our choice. Perhaps I could tackle a project such as this when the time comes!

Hello all. I know we have a few different threads going in order to show off what we have, but I think it would be nice to have everyone's favorite items all in one place. So, what are your five favorite Stephen King items currently in your collection? Include pictures, a small description, why they are in your top five, etc.

Here are Shannon's top five, in no particular order:

I don't believe I have ever contributed to this thread...so here are my favorites in my collection...I like the books I was able to get signed in person...
Carrie, Salem's Lot, The Gunslinger (1st, 2nd and 3rd editions) and last but not least is The New Leiutenants Rap.
I never thought I would get one of those, its not one of the original signed ones but I was able to get an unsigned copy for a great price and then get it signed at the George Mason event !
I also like the loose signature sheets from Six Stories and The Stand that I was able to get.
One more would be my 3rd state Salem's Lot, not an easy book to find but a member here gave me a great deal on one !

This is pretty easy for me. My top 3 would be:

1. Cujo Taylor Guitar
2. Cycle of the Werewolf S/L below 100 with original Wrightson drawing of the werewolf
3. Original Evil Dead one sheet signed by the entire cast and Stephen King

Rahfa

1. "Brave Men," signed by Ernie Pyle
2. "Dispatches," personal copy owned and heavily annotated by Gustav Hasford, screenwriter for "Full Metal Jacket."
3. Original, personalized, and 100 pecent unique art signed by Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fame.
4. My own pre-proof looseleaf proofreader's copy of Dark Tower VII.
5. Personally inscribed to me books by Obama and Hillary Clinton (and Bill too, but he didn't put my name...and I guess Rudy Giuliani)
6. Signed "Full Dark/No Stars" and "Best American Short Stories," which are the two SK book actually signed in front of me, if not inscribed to me...
7. Signed and pretty creatively inscribed Dan Brown books - "DaVinci," "Angels" "Deception Pt." and one other.
8. Dark Tower II s/l "Author's Copy," bought for just $56 and the s/l book that truly got me into SK collecting.
9. Signed "Modern Masters of Horror," a mundane anthology, but the only one I've ever seen signed by SK.
10. Pat Conroy signed 1st editions, my favorite author of all time.

Seeing that list actually impresses me....some neat items there...haha.

Rahfa, just curiious--how do you store the pre-proof copy?

I have a few of these, but I have just been putting them in archival plastic bags, which is okay, I guess, but I wonder if there's a better way.

It's basically a stack of looseleaf papers - so 600 pages (or whatever) that I just keep in the box Robert gave it to me in. I couldn't put it in a bag if I wanted to - at least not one bag for the whole thing.

Firstly, some wonderful items out there. Topped by the first state Salem's Lot no doubt (was that from David Aronovitch by any chance?).

Slightly off-topic, not a top ten list of SK books, but a top five list of books I've encountered over the last year or so.

1. A pristine collection of Philip K. Dick books. The seller inherited the books from a guy who bought three of each of PKD's novels when they were first published in hardback in the UK because he wanted a book collection. He wasn't a fan of PKD but had just heard good things. The books were all fine and the rarest of titles. I spent a pretty penny that day.

2. The Signed Frankenstein...signed by Shelley to Lord Byron. That was a book to behold!

3. A signed copy of Thea Von Harbou's first book, inscribed to her hairdresser. This was actually my copy and for long enough the only signed Von Harbou on the market.

4. A complete set of Terry Pratchett proofs - just nice to see together.

5. Manuscripts for David Gemmell's first two books that remain unpublished.

I'm just curious, but do you maintain a collection at all nowadays? (I'm not talking about reading copies but special/collectible books). Or are you exclusively buying to sell? I know that David @ Betts always says 'you can't fall in love with the inventory' but I assume that virtually every bookseller cherry-picks from his stash at times. Confess! ;)

hyraxia

Nope, none at all now. Maybe when my business is where I want it to be in terms of stock I can start taking pieces out, but with a wife and two kids to support I plough everything back in. My Murakami books are my last books from my collection to become stock (which will be my first catalogue). Surprisingly, my SK collection was the first to go. I figured it would be fairly easy to put back together if I so wished...it really hasn't turned out like that...not by a long shot...half the books I haven't had back in even as stock...

my personal top X collectibles:

1 Salem's Lot Gift Edition in the traycase from The Collector signed, in my presence, by both Stephen King and Jerry Uelsmann on the title page. I really need to get a set of Jerry's photos to go with this. It is #1 because it is one of my two favorite Books and a really cool edition.

2 Forrest J Ackerman's copy of Different Seasons signed in the month of publication, my favorite king collection and my only association copy.

3 The Shining First edition inscribed to me in and in an awesome Doslo art case. This is my favorite book and along with the next book on the list were my first 2 books I was able to get signed by King back when he accepted books in the mail for signing.

4 The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger First inscribed to me by both Author and artist

5 Salem's Lot First Second State jacket in another awesome Doslo art case. Inscribed to me at my first King book signing.

6 The Stand Signed Limited a stunning production

7 Salem's Lot Signed Limited # another stunning production

8 Carrie First an immaculate copy signed at the 1980 World Fantasy Convention

9 Night Shift First signed

10 Firestarter Signed Limited also signed by Whelan, My favorite dust jacket.

Would you consider starting a collection thread or do you have one I missed?

Just for the record people, when I created the thread I called it 'Top X', meaning 'Top Whatever', not 'Top Roman Numeral Ten' (I have seen lots of Top 10s, which is perfectly fine of course... but I don't want people having to struggle to come up with ten items - or having to restrain themselves when they want to make a Top 50) ;)

Good to see some action in this thread!! And you guys have the most amazing books!

Hard to choose 10 and because I want to include pictures, some of them do not make the list (like my set of The Plant all inscribed to same person, or My New Lieutenant's Rap set (S/L with envelope, peace necklace, 2 sets of quiz, invitation, Tom Gordon signed book + both proof variations)...in last 10 years, I've really gone gonzo over artwork and remarques....so, in no particular order here they are:

#1 Regulators S/L prototype (1 of 1)

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/519/medium/Regulators_Prototype_001.jpg

#2 Father Callahan original oil painting - Michael Whelan; MW used me as his model and this Callahan version is on SK's website game "Discordia"

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/519/CALLAHAN1.jpg

#3 Plaster Man Remarque by Ned Dameron in Waste Lands edition

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/519/medium/Plaster_Man.jpg

#4 Orange Gunslinger proof (I believe it to be the only signed copy that exists)

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/519/medium/Orange_Gunslinger4.jpg

#5 One of the "original" Michael Whelan Gunslinger remarques; this one done in S/L version and is the most "finished" of any of the original remarques

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/519/medium/wizremarque1.jpg

#6 Lettered Regulators with check made out to Betts Books

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/519/medium/Regulators_Lettered_Betts_check.jpg

#7 Father Callahan (me again as model) done by Ned Dameron

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/519/medium/Callahan_Susan.jpg

#8 Green Mile Lettered "LL" - all 6 books are remarqued by Mark Geyer

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/519/Letter_LL_2.jpg
http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/519/Letter_LL_3.jpg

#9 Gunslinger S/L remarqued by Michael Whelan (he has only remarqued 4 Gunslinger S/Ls)

http://www.thedarktower.org/gallery/data/519/medium/Whelan_Temple.JPG

#10 Original Roland oil by Michael Whelan....appeared in Little Sisters of Eluria S/L

And a bonus......Jae Lee inscribed this to me....

I've always loved my S/L Skeleton Crew, but I think it's been replaced by Duma Key. One of my favorite King books in years, and this copy is signed by King and remarqued by Mark Stutzman. Of all my remarques, this one is definitely tops all the others.

And then I have other none SK items which I think are excellent. Signed stuff by Peter Clines, Kealan Patrick Burke, and Signed/remarqued items from Ronald Kelly.

I don't know. I haven't looked back through this thread in a long time so I don't know what is on the list I posted. Probably it would be the same. I don't think I have added much of note in the past few years.

Here are my current "Top 10."

Whelan painting from THE GUNSLINGER. My favorite painting from my favorite specialty press book.

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb54/carlosdetweiller/whelantempleoracle-1.jpg

Final galley proof of THE SHINING. My favorite King novel.

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb54/carlosdetweiller/shininggalley1-1.jpg

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb54/carlosdetweiller/shininggalley2-1.jpg

"Wimsey" manuscript. 15 typewritten pages of unpublished manuscript.

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb54/carlosdetweiller/wimsey.jpg

Letter written by King to Forrest Ackerman at age 14.

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb54/carlosdetweiller/lettertoforry-1.jpg

First state dust jacket for 'SALEM'S LOT.

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb54/carlosdetweiller/salemslotdj1ststate.jpg

Lettered (asbestos) FIRESTARTER.

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb54/carlosdetweiller/firestarterasbestos.jpg

Comics Review #3 with two chapters from "I Was a Teen-Age Graverobber." I got King to sign this in 1998.

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb54/carlosdetweiller/comrev1.jpg

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb54/carlosdetweiller/comrev3.jpg

Stephen Gervais' artwork for the dust jacket for Grant's edition of CHRISTINE.

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb54/carlosdetweiller/christinedj.jpg

Salt Hill #1 with King's poem "Dino." I think because this is relatively new and I had so much trouble finding one that this is a current favorite.

http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb54/carlosdetweiller/salthillcover.jpg

A couple of signed/inscribed copies of CARRIE from King's first "official" book signing.

Hmmmm. I would replace the Comics Review #3 with the complete set that I bought a while back. I might replace something with copies of The Stand and 'Salem's Lot with lengthy and very personal inscriptions to his daughter Naomi. Otherwise I would probably keep most everything else. I still am really proud of the Salt Hill. I couldn't find a copy to buy at any price and stumbled on to that copy for $20 late one Saturday afternoon on ABE. One of my best finds.
