Hey all,

to make this more international (hope thats ok...) I start this thread. The reason? Simple! Of course I read all King books in german and I was so impressed to see all the englisch terms in here. They are so much different but so close to me...

This is why I start this thread. to present the famous phrases of DT in my language and I hope others will do so aswell. Perhaps Letti may provide some terms in hungarian. :)

btw: I translate the terms in my words... you may forgive and correct me...

Well, first one has to be the one and only, the greatest sentence ever, symbol of entire DT-world and perhaps the only phrase of a book I will never forget in my life:

Der Mann in Schwarz floh durch die Wüste und der Revolermann folgte ihm.
The man in black fleed through the desert and the gunslinger followed him.

Than my second favorite:
Dann geh. Es gibt andere Welten als diese.
Leave, there are other worlds than this

And more:
Ka ist wie der Wind
Ka is like the wind

...das Gesicht seines Vaters vergessen
...forget fathers countenance

Aye, das ist es
Aye, thats it

lange Tage und angehme Nächte
long days and pleasent nights

I love this!

Great idea for a thread RDR, I can't wait to see some more of the translations.

Have you read the series in English?
What's the German translation like? Is its quality good?

RolandDerRevolvermann

No, I read it in german.
Well, I can´t draw comparisons, cause I´ve just read it in german. Luckily the translator of most SK books translated DT aswell. And thats good for sure. I think, that guy feels like SK does, so he is predastinated to translate SK books. His work is absolutly brilliant!
Everytime i read a SK book I can feel the atmosphere of SK. To transport this atmosphere to the reader, you need to ba a damn good translator. If you´re not, the book will be trash. nevermind the story is great.
So pray that this fucking guy is alive as long as SK writes books :)
*edit* His name is Wulf Bergner. I Love You Wulf! :)

I can say the same about the Hungarian translation - damn good -, absolutely the same but I think you should read the series in English, too.
King's words are King's words you know. :)

English -
The man in black fled across the desert and the gunslinger followed.

Hungarian -
A feketébe öltözött ember a sivatagon át menekült, a harcos pedig követte.

:rose:

English -
Time is a face on the water.

Hungarian -
Az idő egy arc a vízen.

:rose:

English -
Go then, there are other worlds than these.

Hungarian -
Menj hát! Még vannak más világok is!

Sometimes there are very big differences between the Hungarian and the English one.

In german the little "wave" above the "n" is called tilde. But we don´t use ist.

It's also called a tilde here, or sometimes "that squiggle above the N," depending on who you're talking to.

Pistoleros! Pa Mi!

:)

Is The Gunslinger called El Pistolero in the Spanish versions? I've never seen one before. I would love to read the series in Spanish....maybe I will have to look on B & N. :)

I have to say, that if you can read a book in the language it was originally written in, you're better off. You can just never get a really accurate translation, no matter how hard you try. :D

Especially in the Dark Tower books, because you have all the variations on English vernacular and colloquialisms to deal with. :D

I have no idea, I've never seen any of the spanish versions. I'm going to Mexico this january for about 2 weeks, I'm going to look for the DT books and buy them all so that I can compare and contrast. :)

Of course Daggers but that is true of an entire language, not just with a book translation. Futhermore, that is no reason not to read it in another language. It is impossible to translate one language to another and get the exact sentiment all of the time. :)

I am looking forward to reading the DT in Spanish and reading what the "translations" are.

And after that I could translate your translation into Hungarian and from that into English again.
I think after awhile we would have new books. :D

Yes! The Gunslinger is El Pistolero in the Spanish version.

By the way, the GREAT quote:

"El hombre de negro huía a través del desierto, y el pistolero iba en pos de él".
(The man in black flew accross the....)

I think I'd prefer it this way.

Anyway, cool! I totally want El Pistolero and the rest of them in Spanish. That would be a cool experience. :)

The title of first edition in the spanish version was "La hierba del diablo" very bad traslate "devi´s weed"

Now, the new re-editions (revised) the title is correct.

"El Pistolero" = "The gunslinger"

Ooh, I like this thread.

:nana:

This reminds me, there's a wonderful new translation of War & Peace that's just been released. It's done by a Russo-American husband-wife team.

They really capture the essense of Tolstoy.

"Drops dripped"

It's intriguing to see how my favorite epic tale reads in another language.

And why did they make such a big change in the title at the first time??

DAMN, this is awesome, i wish we had slovene translations of The Dark Tower =< well i'll translate this one myself
Leave, there are other worlds than these:
Pojdi, še drugi svetovi so.

And omg we suck, i just realized we dont have a proper word for a gunslinger!
only "kavboj" which means cowboy...
