Happiness Is a Warm Gun - Marc Ribot

This is a great example of Marc's idea of a cover, which is to take the essence of the song and make the rest your own. It's informed much of the way I play a lot of songs. I also do a pretty fair rendition of this one which is something of a hybrid of Marc's version, the original, and part which is all me.

I've heard many artists attempt to cover "Jealous Guy" but E.S. is one of only two that I've ever heard do it well. The other is the short-lived band Vida Blue which was a side project of Page McConnell, pianist/keyboardist for the band Phish.

Cool! He definitely chooses some interesting stuff to cover. "Waterloo Sunset" is a longtime favorite of mine (I love The Kinks).

NP: The Wind Cries Mary* - Marc Ribot

This bears little more than a lyrical resemblance to Hendrix' original. Everyone and their brother covers this song and they all do it almost exactly like Hendrix. This cover is SO refreshing. If it weren't for the recognizable lyrics, you'd never know it was the same song.

Though I love the band as a whole I'd go so far as to say they were all replaceable excluding Jim.

Can't argue with that. He was a great song-writer and even though I don't care for his singing, it's still undeniably good singing. That's why Marc's cover is so interesting to me, because he can't sing and he knows he can't sing but he does it anyway and doesn't really care about the results. At first it can throw you, but then you focus on how exceptional he and the other two guys in that band are and you forget there even is singing going on.

He plays in any number of situations live. He often does solo performances, which I've yet to see but feel I must at some point. He'll also have a couple of his own projects going at any given time and is given to playing shows with one of them such as Marc Ribot y Los Cubanos Postizos, Spiritual Unity, or Ceramic Dog (also his past bands Shrek, Rootless Cosmopolitans, etc). In addition, he does a lot of shows for the various projects of John Zorn's in which he is a member (Bar Kokhba, Electric Masada, The Gift/The Dreamers, etc.). Unfortunately, he rarely plays in the US outside of NYC, though he plays quite often in Europe. When I would travel to NY in the past, I'd make a point of seeing him play if it were at all possible.

Ok, so here's another incarnation, Marc as part of John Zorn's Bar Kokhba band (one of many bands which interpret Zorn's Masada songbooks).

So I've been trying recently to shuffle my Elliott in iTunes so I can learn lyrics to more than two albums (ha, guess which two), but I'm not liking it much.
Each album has such a different sound... Kind of like I'm in a very acoustic mood so I listen to Either/Or or his self-titled, then all of a sudden Son of Sam is playing and it's too, well, happy. Know what I mean?
I guess I just need to stick to whole albums. :shrugs:

I know what you mean. Elliott had a real sense of a certain aesthetic he was going for with an album. I think he picked it up from the Beatles. His first three were recorded on an 8 track at his house and all the instruments are played by him. The later ones a lot "bigger" and polished with the financial backing of Dreamworks.

Have you bought Roman Candle? Its his very first album and all acoustic. He made it when he was still in Heatmiser.

Awesome! I see that you are in Croatia. I had no idea you guys had surf music over there, but this band showed me that wasn't the case. Well, we don't have any surf music apart from The Bambi Molesters. But they are cool, yeah. When I was meeting Surfraptor from the TW forum I brought him as a present their very first release which was released by my friend who owns a small label here. So, I've been into them from their very beginnings. Peter Buck of R.E.M. is their no.1 fan apparently.

The latest official release of archival live material from Mr. Young, and like the previous two, this one does not disappoint. The included DVD is not quite what I was hoping for, but the CD alone was more than worth the purchase.

I won't ask. It's a band I almost forgot even existed. The guy who lived in the dorm room next door to me my freshmen year listened to nothing but that hair-band fake metal stuff 24 hours a day. Luckily I had a louder stereo and music that could easily make him back off the volume. Someone for whom the height of music was Motley Crue was in no way prepared for Last Exit or Ornette Coleman's Prime Time band.
