I've been thinking about how to handle this and I believe that the various Illustrations for King books should have a separate sub forum that is wikified and can be cross referenced.

We will divide by book as we did in the other and then subdivide by author so either can be searched effectively.

Also--we can put links on the books in our current King catalog that will take a person to the illustrations for that book. Why are we doing this?

-some images are the same even though the collectible book is different

-some illustrations are so long and complex-adding them to the current book article would make it too long

-people should be allowed to view just illustrations for the books without viewing the actual book and it would be hard to find what you were looking for if we only put them in one book (because they are the same across many), people wouldn't know where they were.

-We can break it up by Artist (which is the part I really like)

So here is what I need if anyone would like to help.

The images of course, we have a lot of those already
A way to distinguish them from one another--seems like artist is the best way to go in this case
Standard text for each entry that tells about it
PostingI can create the sub forum for this and call it "The King Illustrations Catalog" and put it right under the current one.

I hate to do a whole bunch of work in a direction that we are not going so I wanted to put this out here for suggestions.

Obviously the illustration "articles" (threads) will also contain a link back to the books they appear in. Lot of work but I think its the best way to go.

That works fine with me :)

This sounds great, Matt, and addresses my concerns on the subject.

Feel free to move (or cut-and-paste the content from) my illustration posts in the Discussion threads in the King Catalog for WIZARD AND GLASS and SONG OF SUSANNAH into their new proper places. Or once I understand the new set-up, I can do it if you haven't already.

Do we need some template, similar to the book catalogue?

Artist:
Book: (I.E. Eyes of the Dragon Signed Limited)

Matt
10-10-2007, 01:58 PM
I would love that Jerome. I am going to set up the forum and all we need to do is have a thread per illustration.

Then we can wikifi it

We also need to make sure these entries include a link the the collectible book they are from in the catalog.

I agree that we should.

Also to the extent that we are using photolinks directly to an artist's website, I think the right thing to do would be to acknowledge that site. If linked to a member's personal collection of scans/photos, then we should acknowledge that member instead.

For example:

I think that's a great idea, I want to give credit where it is due for sure.

Where would the actual link back to the catalog go in that format?

Patrick

I think that's a great idea, I want to give credit where it is due for sure.

Where would the actual link back to the catalog go in that format?

I think we would state those four lines of information, with the link right there in the third line in the book title. Then the images would follow.

Would that work, WikiMaster? :)

Here is what I'm thinking in terms of what an entry might look like. If it is not of interest, we could delete that middle paragraph (the one in quotation marks). As always, please share your thoughts.

Stanzas (Chapter Illustrations) by Darrel Anderson from SONG OF SUSANNAH

Darrel Anderson's illustrations for The Dark Tower VI: Song of Susannah, are available in very limited editions.

"These prints are pulled using our archival Roland Digital printer . Unlike mass reproductions, these are unique works of art, finely tuned by the artists. In the case of Darrel's work (primarily digital), there are no physical originals. While they may differ slightly from the book images, this direct control of the print medium by the artists produces the best possible representations of their vision. Prints are created on 100% rag, acid free paper with archival pigment inks. All prints include generous paper borders, depending on image size."

All prints are signed and numbered by the artist. The edition for each print is limited to 30 plus 5 artist's proofs.

So under "images courtesy of" ?

What I am hoping for is a wiki link that will show the entry for the book on the pop up. Like this.

'Salem's Lot-Gift Edition

Just realized I mis-read your earlier post. I agree the wiki links should be the book titles in the "Editions:" entry.

In my "Images courtesy of:" examples above, braid.com is Rick Berry and Darryl Anderson's actual website. If it were, for example, Jerome's own scans from copies of his books, we would link to his personal profile like the King Catalog does now.

Ah, got it.

That works great for me. To get that link we just have to surround the book text with [*autolink]book title[*/autolink] without the asterisks.

Matt
10-10-2007, 02:28 PM
Love it you guys, I say we roll with it.

I am going to add the forum now.

You want it linked to the actual book in the Catalog?
Clarify-unless you just highlight the title and use the hyperlink button with the right URL

Patrick

You want it linked to the actual book in the Catalog? ...
I think that's it.

Matt
10-10-2007, 02:45 PM
Yep, that is what I would like. We need to use the autolink code so it knows what it is looking for.

Patrick
10-10-2007, 02:45 PM
So it would look something like this if Jerome scanned in the photos from his actual book.

That would be fine but as opposed to the URL for the books. We simply need to put the title inbetween these BBCODES

[*autolink]Book Title[*/autolink]

Its actually much easier and it will force the wiki's to talk to each other.

The forum is there now. All we have to do is start a thread for each set of illustrations by book.

Patrick

D'oh! >< I just figured that out before I saw your post.

It works now!

My post above now shows the two different links: URL vs. autolink

Patrick
10-10-2007, 02:57 PM
This sure seems to be coming together. :)

I would like to clarify that we want these autolinks in the entry for "Editions", as the "Book Title" will be the same for most editions.

Also there may be multiple illustration entries for a "Book Title" as different editions may have different pictures.

For example, the original S/L edition of The Talisman has artwork from many artists while the more recent Gift Slipcased edition has more recent artwork all of which is from Rick Berry.

Randall Flagg
10-10-2007, 05:41 PM
I am a little slow here. Does the title to be auto linked to have to be perfect?
As in just how it's spelled in the Catalog?

Patrick
10-10-2007, 11:27 PM

Yes. For the autolink function to work the title has to match an entry name (i.e. thread name which is a book title) in the wiki/Catalog.

As I said, I'd suggest to make a folder where we can put the images.
I've been linking some images from the artist's websites (darrel anderson, Rick berry, Michael Whelan), but I'd suggest to upload all here, since when the artist modify their websites, the images will no longer be available.
Just a thought. :)

Matt
10-11-2007, 06:03 AM
That sounds good to me. I am fine with uploading images to the site as long as credit is given where due to the artist or website, that can be put in the description in the gallery.

Hi,

This thread was starting to have two important related, but separate, discussions going on.

So that this thread could stay on the topic of building the new King Illustration Catalog, I moved the related but off-topic discussion to its own thread:

King Catalog - Naming Convention (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?t=1166)

:)

Randall Flagg
10-11-2007, 02:21 PM
Thanks Patrick.

I moved this thread in here so we could use it to discuss this specific catalog.

I actually have numerous sketches from the last two DT books and Talisman/BH on my hard drive. We were using them when designing the programs for PalaverCon and Mik let me download the lot of 'em. I'll see about separating them out by book and will then post.

Matt
10-31-2007, 08:41 AM
Sounds great Aaron, I know we talked about that a bit this weekend. Can't wait to see them.

And thanks Ari, for posting stuff in here. I love to see new "articles" (threads) going up and can't wait for the wikification of this forum.

Matt
11-13-2007, 03:33 PM
Do I need to up the amount of images you can put in a post Ari--I think the "second post" images are going to get lost when we wikifi this thing.

EDIT--not lost, they just won't be on the "article" first page

Ari_Racing
11-13-2007, 04:28 PM
Thatīs okay with me. Tell me when it's done and I'll modify all.
:)

Matt
11-14-2007, 07:12 AM
Thanks Ari--I have changed the maximum images per post on the site to 20.

Let me know if that isn't enough to get them all in one post. :couple:

Randall Flagg
11-14-2007, 08:58 AM
Thanks Matt.
So, before we get to far we should go back and edit any post where all the pics were not contained in their entirety, and just physically remove the follow up posts where the overflow pics where-correct?

Matt
11-14-2007, 09:01 AM
I think that would be a really good idea Jerome. I have been looking at them and it looks like only a few have overflowed.

The "second" post should be deleted for sure--once the pictures have been moved to the first of course

Ari_Racing
11-15-2007, 04:58 AM
Alright, I've just fixed all my posts (I can't edit those that I didn't start).

There's an issue with Skeleton Crew. I need to be able to post more than 20 images for it.

Matt
11-15-2007, 07:30 AM
Hmmmm...let me pop it up to 30.

I can't imagine anyone would ever take advantage of this in the main forum so I can't see any reason to not make it available

Edit--

This has been done

Ari_Racing
11-15-2007, 09:03 AM

hope being able to get the list back to being able to do this kind of threads for every single illustratd book...

Matt

I don't mind an overall list at all, when this is completed it will essentially be a different thread for each set of illustrations like the King Catalog. :nana:

Well we can still add/edit/and delete stuff after its done--just works a little differently.

I really need someone to come up with "main article page" for the display when it goes live.

Aaron
12-14-2007, 12:46 PM
I have an idea for the main page, but will need an image. Can anyone post or send me a full-size copy of this image:

Its basically just going to be exactly like the King Catalog once we flip the switch.

Aaron
12-18-2007, 12:01 PM

I put a copy in the thread so when you have it the way you like, just replace the one in there.

The "front page" for this will be the thread that is the exact same name as the forum in here. I think its on the second page.

Edit the first post in that thread however you like and it will represent the front page when the switch gets flipped.

I will create the following threads for the missing illustrations :

- Desperation (Grant). Can someone please share the illustrations and details ???
- One for the Road (PS Publishing). I dont think that we can share the illustrations just now... but we can put the details of it.
- Riding the Bullet (deluxe special edition). Will need Brian Freeman's approval prior to share the pix.
- Blockade Billy (CD). I guess that we can share the pictures as this edition is sold out.
- Full Dark, No Stars. Brian Freeman told me that he will send the pictures as the book is almost sold out, there is no problem about sharing them.
