Have to go with Boyle on this one.

Boy, but I seem to be a fan of the underdogs....I agree, Jean. Scorsese seems to have the advantage here.

Boyle.

Seriously tough one, especially considering how much I've loved Scorsese's work...but I've loved Boyle's work even more.

Danny Boyle.

I had to think about this for a while.

Oh man, these polls are already getting too hard for me
Boyle is one of my personal favorite directors. I love his films. But Scorsese! I feel he's a much better director.

I'll be back in a little bit...

I'm going to literally flip a coin for this one...heads boyle, tails scorsese.

vote your personal favorite, then. I think it's fairer than trying to assess someone's greatness; what are the criteria, anyway, unless they are in your heart?

Yeah, comparing directors can be hard. I still think the weirdest comparison we've had so far was Del Toro and Howard....you can't get any more opposite than that.

Boyle

Yes, I know he is going to lose to Scorsese.

I'm sure he's going to lose, as well, but I have to go with Boyle. Sunshine and 28 Days Later are two of the finest films I've seen.

I desperately want to see Sunshine again. The last 20 minutes through me for a loop so I have to check it out again. In top five space movies of the decade, along with Moon and Pandorum imo.

I chose Scorsese. Just cuz. I'm actually glad it's this close though.

You're right. I've been thinking about it, and I think I'm going to go with Boyle. But I do think Scorsese is amazing :)

I voted Boyle too. Trainspotting was ground breaking, I was blown away by it when it first came out. Much like Pulp Fiction, I think you need to remember the impact these films had on you when you first saw them.

I agree that Trainspotting was groundbreaking... and I love it.

But ... it wasn't more groundbreaking than, say, Taxi Driver. Or Raging Bull.

Seymour_Glass

Yeah. Taxi Driver is crazy.

some more Boyle votes are needed here

I agree with this, which is precisely why I voted for Marty. I still remember the first time I watched Taxi Driver, Raging Bull and Goodfellas, being in the grip of their raw power and Scorsese's story telling deftness. That's probably why I count them all amongst my favorite films.

I can't emphasize enough how blown away I was by Taxi Driver. It completely hollowed me out. I might enjoy watching Trainspotting more, but in terms of power, Taxi Driver is pretty much unrivaled. Except by Raging Bull.

And After Hours had so much more punch than any "comedy" I've ever seen. And The Departed had so much subtext and pitch perfect scenes. And Mean Streets felt so real.

But I do love Danny Boyle.
