QT....and that was easy.

fernandito

It wasn't an easy choice for me ... Tarantino is, well, Tarantino, and I love his films to death, but there's something about PTA's films that always manage to strike a chord with me on a deeper level (most notably Magnolia)...

They both have excellent films though.

BROWNINGS CHILDE

Well, unlike several of these polls where I like one director and am somewhat indifferent to the other. I love QT movies, and hated There Will Be Blood, Punch-Drunk Love and Boogie Nights.

My av/sig.

We gonna lose, ain't we?

Jean
09-04-2010, 07:05 AM
just like everybody else

hopefully, in the end we're losing to Hitchcock... but since Anderson is losing to Tarantino, I wish I could vote for Anderson as many times as it took. He needs 5 more votes now.

pathoftheturtle
09-04-2010, 07:24 AM
Tough. This reminds me that QT is not all bad 'cause PTA is not all great. Voting for Anderson, just doubt he'll get my vote again if he should happen to advance.

Jean
09-04-2010, 07:27 AM
if he should happen to advance, it's not Tarantino he will face

if it is Spielberg, though, then Anderson will have my voice again

pathoftheturtle
09-04-2010, 07:31 AM
I understand. I'm only saying that he'd be more likely to face someone who I prefer, statistically.

Jean
09-04-2010, 07:57 AM
statistically, everybody I prefer is about to face everybody I prefer very soon

(except Tarantino and Spielberg; hope they face each other and cancel out)

How is Tarantino beating PT Anderson? HOW? This was an absolute no brainer and I love Tarantino. Tarantino, however, will always be a better script writer than a director. Always. I love his movies but they are not near the quality movies nor can he get the performances out of his actors like PT Anderson can.

For those that don't know, PT Anderson has a new movie coming out called 'The Master'...AMAZING CAST:

The Master will be the seminal event of my life when it comes out. And Tarantino, as much as I love him, never really directs anything with any sort of thematic or emotional heft. He's a clever man who directs fun movies. Paul Thomas Anderson is a clever man who directs movies that can be fun, heart-wrenching, and awe-inspiring.

Easiest poll yet.

For me at least and a few others I suppose.

I enjoy most of the films from both QT and PTA.

That being said, if I had 2+ hours to kill and I want to watch a movie, I would choose Pulp Fiction over There Will Be Blood.

I would choose Reservoir Dogs over Magnolia.

I just think QT makes more entertaining films(to me of course.) For those of you who love There Will Be Blood, you have to admit, that is not exactly an easy film to watch. You can't just sit down and watch that film. You have to be in the mood.

Also, I can't help but feel Punch Drunk Love is a tad overrated.

Seymour_Glass

You do have a point. But when I get up from watching There Will Be Blood I definitely feel more than when I get up from watching Pulp Fiction.

I would choose Reservoir Dogs over Magnolia.

What? Reservoir Dogs isn't even that strong of a movie.

Also, I can't help but feel Punch Drunk Love is a tad overrated.

Yeah, it's a tad overrated in the sense it's absolutely amazing. One of my favourite movies, EVER.

These results make me cry. I'm also curious as to why everyone who voted for Tarantino has fallen back on Pulp Fiction and not even mentioned Ingorious Basterds, which was his best film.

I really enjoyed Pulp Fiction, but couldn't stand Inglourious Basterds. I just thought it couldn't decide whether it wanted to be a serious war film, with all the little moments of long dialogue, or a dumb, stupid action movie that took the piss out of history, especially with that really dumb ending. Really, too much of the time it was just too stupid for me to enjoy.

And for a film to be too stupid for me, a guy who enjoys Scott Pilgrim and really wants to see Machete, is saying a lot!

Regarding on who's a better director, whilst I've heard nothing but great things from PTA, especially There Will Be Blood, I've yet to see any of his films, so I'm not gonna make a vote on this one. I do agree with others that Tarantino is an amazing scriptwriter - after all, the really long, classic quotes are what Tarantino's films are remembered for best - I'm not entirely sure he's a great director. That's not me saying he's a crap or great director, just that his scripts seem to make more impact to me than than his directing ability...unless, of course, he's not directing his own screenplay and it gets radically altered, so perhaps I should give him props for being 100% faithful to his own source and making great films out of it!

I was just using Reservoir Dogs as an example. You can plug in IB or Kill Bill if you want.

I would disagree though, I think Reservoir Dogs is a strong movie.

Jean is right, being "an easy film to watch" isn't a good or bad thing. I was mainly trying to say if you are looking to just watch a fun, entertaining film, There Will Be Blood might not be the film I'd choose.

I'm sure other people would disagree, but as somebody who likes both films. I'd go with something from QT instead.

It is for me. Hell , I own the DVD, and every time I flip through the movie channels and see it's on, I just have to sit down and watch it, such is my fascination with that film.

Also, I can't help but feel Punch Drunk Love is a tad overrated.

If anything I feel that film is underrated. It gets better with each subsequent viewing.

It was a strong script with a few good performances; most notably Michael Madsen and Steve Buschemi although Tim roth (who I love) was also good. Magnolia had much better acting and characters and direction and more to say. Who doesn't love Frank T.J. Mackey?

You can't really compared Edgar Wright to Paul Thomas Anderson. Like comparing the Farrelly Brothers to the Coen Brothers.

Wright is more comparable to Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino than Paul Thomas Anderson, I will say that.

yes, like King Arthur in First Knight:

"I have no pride left in me. What I do, now I do for my people and for Camelot. And may they forgive me. This is my last act as your king. Do not be afraid. All things change. I am Arthur of Camelot, and I command you now... all... To fight! Fight like you've never fought before! Never surrender! Never Surrender! Fight as you never... "
[Arthur is shot by several crossbow bolts]

If I didn't hate that movie so totally, it might bother me to see such a big spoiler for everyone. Anyone who hasn't seen it, however, and picks it up wondering whether she'll end up with Richard Gere must be awfully thick-headed, anyway. ><
