As much as i can.

Some explainations about my collection.
The following pictures are PART of my collections. Those books (and therefore those pictures) were taken at my parents, where most of my collection currently is.
I however have another big part in my flat next to Paris... and i dont have any pictures of it just now. I'll may take some later on.

The focus of my collection is french items. I started about 4 years ago, and at the time i didnt have much money.
Therefore i decided to collect french books because it was cheaper, "easier", there are less items (lazy bum :P )... but also i've been looking all around the place and have found LOTS of stuff that were unknown for most of the collectors. That includes magazines, and other writings misc published in France.

I am part of the french king community since about 8 years (i think). Since the beginning i was managing a forum, then over the years, a webmaster gave me his website because he didnt have enough time anymore.
Thanks to it, i have been on touch with a lot of french publishers, recieved freebies, got on touch with quite a few collectors, and people related to King in France.

Because i am still student (final year : gonne get a Master's Degree in Marketing), i traveled a lot over the last few years... and didnt have much space in my different flats.
That's why my collection stayed at my parents, but therefore, the lack of money, the lack of place, made that i didnt really buy everything i wanted.
At first, when i was quite younger, and didnt have any money AT ALL, my aim was to have all the books in mass paperback editions. I have quite a lot now... but i am also upgrading them to 1st eds (and keeping the paperback for reading)

I didnt look for all the 1st eds so far (will do!), but i managed to grab the earliest 1st eds, and the "rarest". I still have a lack of place where i currently live, but i am gonne bring my collection back with me..

Now that it's explained, i will put the pictures online (tonite i think)

I collect another author : Bernard Werber.
A french author that is very popular in France. But also in Russia, Korea, where he is considered as a superstar.

I have met him quite a few times, i have plenty of scarces items (and i got some signed), and i am working on a project related to him.
So you'll only see a few items, as i keep some of them "secret" so far, as some items will be "revealed" in my project, if nobody does it before :-)

@frik : unfortunately those covers are only available in paperbacks. However i did gather the STAND ones in a single file (printed it, n put it with my copy of KNOWING DARKNESS)
Its so nice

Btw, about the way books are called in english.
- paperbacks are books of a normal
Size, which covers are in paper
It also means the smaller book right?
Dont u have another word for the smaller books? (mass paperback?)
I am always a wee bit confused when i want to talk about a "smaller"
Book

In french we call the smaller bookd "livre de poche" (pocket books), whixh is also the name of the major publisher for "pocket books"

frik
07-21-2010, 01:05 AM
Yes, I also find this confusing.
In my country we call the smaller softcovers pockets - paperbacks, I presume.
The larger sized softcovers are the trade..paperbacks??

sk

Dutch 'pockets' are US/UK mass-market paperbacks.
Dutch 'paperbacks' are US/UK trade paperbacks.

These books are all VERY interesting! And very enjoyable to look at, especially the vatious types of artwork on the covers (some familiar and some not at all).

The term sacrebleau is a bastardization of a famous incident which occured in the French quarter (or was it half-dollar) of Poughkeepsie, where an extremely tyranical foreman ran a gang of bricklayers so hard they almost died from overwork. His name, of course, was Ray Blu, and the bricklayers were always making threats behind his back to the tune of "I'm gonna sock that Ray Blu one day so hard he'll think he's back in the old country!"

JOYLAND gets published on the 2nd of May in France (so in about 1 week).
I've just recieved a copy of the book, as well as the french proof :)

Here is a picture of the french proof for JOYLAND. I dont know how many proofs are made by the french publisher but i think that it's a really low number as i've never seen any proofs for sale.
http://club-stephenking.fr/img/DIVERS/proofs/avril2014/Proof-Joyland-FR.jpg

Actually, I know of 3 copies of the french BAG OF BONES (including mine, that I bought on ebay a couple of years ago), which is quite cool, because it is not a normal plain proof. There is a text starting by "Dear friend bookseller"
Here is a picture :
http://club-stephenking.fr/img/DIVERS/proofs/avril2014/Proof-BagOfBones-FR.jpg

There is also the french DOCTEUR SLEEP which isnt a plain proof but is quite similar to the final book.
The proof is on the left in those 2 pictures.
http://club-stephenking.fr/img/DIVERS/proofs/avril2014/Proof-DoctorSleep-FR
http://club-stephenking.fr/img/DIVERS/proofs/avril2014/Proof-DoctorSleep2-FR

Except those 2 other french proofs of BAG OF BONES, I dont know of any other proofs out there that are NOT in my collection.
I have ALL of the recent books in proof since BLAZE. The only one that I dont have is TWTTKH, as it was released by another published who apparently didnt do any proofs for this title.
Here is a picture of a part of my shelf, on which I put the proofs next to the final books. UNDER THE DOME was plit in 2 books, hence the 2 proofs next to each other. As I dont have much space and am now really running out of space to follow my organisation, it starts to be piling on top of each other between shelves....

A list of my french proofs :
- Bag of bones (i know of 3 copies)
- Blaze
- Duma Key
- Just after sunset
- Under the dome (split in 2 books)
- FD,NS
- 11/22/63
- Doctor Sleep
- Joyland

In my collection, I also collect another author. The french Bernard Werber, who writes what he calls "philosophical-fiction". Being published by the same publisher, I have proofs for 7 of his books and that includes 2 duplicate proofs.

New pride and joy : an officially printed version of the french version of BAD LITTLE KID.

There were 30 copies given away during a contest organised by the french publisher. In this contest, 30 copies of the books were available, and if the winner was saying that they didnt have the material to read an ebook, a printed version would be sent to them.
I was told that I would be getting one, and then, that they had just enough copies for the winners so that I wouldnt be getting one.

Imagine my surprise when, 1-2 months later I recieve one from the publisher, totally unexpected :)

A personnalised-doodled-one !

Signed : "For Jeremy, Friendly, Bernard". The doodle represents GAIA, which is a main character of this book titled "The voice of Earth", by Bernard Werber.

Yesterday I attended to a french signing by Neil Gaiman.
There was about 300 people I guess, and the signing last about three hours and half.

It was a nice opportunity to meet him, speak to him a bit, and getting 3 books signed. He is nice enough to sign pretty much anything you put on front of him (one of the bookshop staff said that he would only sign 1 book + as many copies of OCEAN which is his latest book here).

So I got him to sign a copy of AMERICAN GODS, a copy of OCEAN as well as an ARC copy of SHADOW SHOW (dedicated to Ray Bradbury). When I asked him if he remembered it, he said he did and he looked at a copy (being surprised to see a prepublication copy), talked a bit about Ray Bradbury...

Two things stroke me the most :
1) I knew it, but he has such a nice / peculiar voice. It is so easily recognisable. I really love his voice. If you never heard him, I SO encourage you to listen his inspirational speech "Make good art" which he did at a university of arts a few years back. It's really a nice speech. Really moving and touching
>>> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikAb-NYkseI
2) Somehow, I thought that he was writing and signing quite elegantly. I know it sounds weird, but the way that someone holds a pen make it sliding on a page can be... rough or, contrarily, sort of elegant. He was the latter, taking his time to write and speak with everyone. Obviously the fact that I got him to sign 3 books also makes him spending more time, so it's better to chat a bit :)

I'll meet him again on monday for a press conference :)

Anansi Boys : I didnt pay attention, but the dedication of the book says that as always the reader take the book, seek for the dedication and of course is not dedicated to us. Neil underlined the part where it says that this time, the book is dedicated to YOU (the reader). Which is a nice dedication !

Sort of not King related, but last night, a french author (who was on stage with King in Paris last year), was asked to present a movie in theater. So his choice was THE SHINING, and the evening first had a book signing.
So, I had the opportunity to discuss a bit more with him, get books signed, and watch THE SHINING in theater again :)

He signed an anthology to which he contributed : "For Jeremy, because you know the importance of short stories... friendly."

Recieved a signed copy of a book that will be available in 2 weeks. Recieved it directly from the author.
The next book from the author that was on stage with Stephen King in Paris. The literal translation of the title is : "thy will be done", and the dedication says :
"To Jeremy Guerineau, thy will be done, my story the most inspired by Stephen King! Impatient to have your opinion. Friendly."

It's always complicated, because usually, litterature is english > other languages, and very rarely foreign language > english.
Which means that before even promoting the book, the publisher has translation cost, while for an english novelist, the publisher can already promote with this budget.

I believe that only one of his novels has been translated, and one that is different from his recent work, and definitely not his best one. He once told me that the sales in the UK were OK (like 70 000 copies), but were low for US standards and therefore the publisher decided not to continue.

According to wikipedia, some of his books has been translated to german & italian

"Die Gaia-Hypothese" was quite good too.

Yeah, I see the challenge. Makes you wonder how many good foreign authors don't get a shot here like Stieg Larsson did...

THere are also a few other spanish authors that get translated. But then there is a whole hispano-world in the USA.
It sometimes bugs me that publishers would not necessarily give a chance to some foreign authors. I mean, I am a huge fan of Bernard Werber, which is french. Only his first book was translated into english (Empire of the ants), but it isn't his best book.
Why not giving him another chance and publish his other books, WHEN his other books are best sellers in Korea & Russia for instance, where he is considered as a superstar?
For me, if someone is selling millions of copies, it should be intriguing, especially when the author writes about universal themes...

The french translation of MR MERCEDES will be released on wednesday, and today I recieved the book in two status (the final version and a proof).

I must admit that I am a bit surprised by this proof, printed in january, since I know that the author that was on stage with King in Paris got a proof of the same book by christmas, therefore printed in december. This is the second time that it seem to me that there are two status of french proof.
The other time was a few months ago when someone shared with me a picture of a french proof of JOYLAND that was different from mine as had (what seemed to be a random picture) on it, which, at first I thought was for hiding contact details...

http://club-stephenking.fr/img/collection-herbertwest/mr-mercedes--french--proof.jpg

NB: the books are of the same size. It doesnt look that way, but it is just an illusion. However, the height of the book is different, despite the same number of pages. I guess that the final version has a thicker paper...

I follow closely two authors (Steve and the french Bernard Werber). I Have done extensive bibliographic researches about the later : he had been a scientific journalist for over 7 years and I hunted every single essay he wrote at that time. So it's always nice when, every so often I find something that I didnt know from him (short stories, essays, excerpts...)

Last week I found, accidentally, an advertising on which I couldnt help but notice that it was mentionning a pre-publication of his first graphic novel in a french magazine. So I couldnt help by hunting those, today, at the french national library. In the end, I found the whole graphic novel (45 pages), published 1 page per day, a few months prior to the actual publication !

I think that this is a sort of "heritage" from Rocky Wood & Justin Brooks bibliographic work and researches that led me to do a similar thing for this author !

One thing that i quite like as well, is that he usually doodle his books : usually a character of his books (ants, trees, angels, people, etc)

A few years back, I discovered a french author, Maxime Chattam, who was on stage in Paris with King at the saturday event (I discovered about that author a couple f years prior to that).
Because I like collecting books (why wouldnt I be here otherwise), I like hunting essays and everything written by an author.

Last year or so, I heard about a book for which he wrote an introduction (a very small printing as it was for an antology, published by a city council). I previously managed to get photocopies & photos from the copy availalbe at the national library, but today I recieved a copy I found a couple of days ago !

So, here it is : a very fine copy. Low printing I guess although I dont know how many were printed.

Now, our flat has a corner where I could literally put more of those shelves if needed, although need to be careful with the sunlight. Plus we also have a big garage literally below our flat.

We wanted to get custom fitted bookshelves but would not financially be able to do that, so I just come back from a shop were I bought 4 more bookshelves that are classier & bigger. I'll start building them next weekend, but it's good to feel like settling more!
I'll have those bookshelves in the leaving room with my most important books. And the current cheap bookshelves will go down the garage for cheap books such as pocket books and other storage.

EXCITED at the idea of getting my books out of the boxes they've been in for the past 6 months! I will also have more space for books : in the past I did limit my books purchase because I literally had no more space. The books were ridiculously starting to piling each other on top of the bookshelves !

Before (mess + books were still mostly in the garage) :
http://club-stephenking.fr/img/collection-herbertwest/shelves/flat1.jpg http://club-stephenking.fr/img/collection-herbertwest/shelves/2015/avant01.JPG

Now :

http://club-stephenking.fr/img/collection-herbertwest/shelves/2015/apres03.JPG

I am considering buying another bookcase because I'll be already running out of space when i'd put the other box of books + I plan on buying some more :)

Valueless items (DVDs and pocket books) in the garage. I havent noticed any humidity but also the raining season only starts now. I hope they'll be OK, but i'll also buy humidity absorbers, just in case.

Also, I always loved the old french covers for the mass paperback edition of THE STAND. I recently decided to buy 2 additional sets to mine, and put them together so that I could display the entire artwork.
I recently a third one today, so here it is (and yes, it's not matching unfortunately. I will try to return this red set to buy a matching one).

So, tonight was a signing by Werber, my second favorite author.
I didnt do like everybody else, who mostly got signatures on his latest book, because following closely what he publishes, I decided to get 4 different items signed. His latest book will be next time.

1) An anthology with a story by him. I previously got another author to sign

http://club-stephenking.fr/img/collection-herbertwest/BW/14102015/13-a-table.JPG

2) "welcome to paradise", a play that was published as a mass paperback in june

http://club-stephenking.fr/img/collection-herbertwest/BW/14102015/bienvenue-au-paradis.JPG

3) "Us, the books", a story published in a magazine this year

http://club-stephenking.fr/img/collection-herbertwest/BW/14102015/bw-nous-les-livres.JPG

4) And finally : a first edition / first print of his very first book "Empire of the ants". I found this copy earlier this year, after hunting one for quite a long time !

http://club-stephenking.fr/img/collection-herbertwest/BW/14102015/les-fourmis-1-1st.JPG

His latest book will be signed another time. Tonight he told me several times that I need to go to his place to pick up the proof, so that will be the opportunity to get it signed, whenever that will be.

Well, yes and no.

I have been using many many times in the past an option from the post office for sending books and magazines abroad. It is called "books and magazines", and it's a LOT CHEAPER than anything else and perfect for nothing valuable...

However, the last time I went to the post office, the woman had been annoying saying that this option can only being used within a 'transparent' enveloppe. Which had never been mentionned to me in the past.
I need to print the page from the website for the next time i'll go there, as it doesnt say so.

> The cheapest shipping cost she quoted me last time, was $21 with signature etc for Germany. According to the website, it's more likely to be $13 or less for USA with this option!

Some new pictures of my collection (those pix do not show the mass paperbacks in the garage)

Shelf that we can see at the bottom is a mix of numerous authors, in no order at all.
http://club-stephenking.fr/img/collection-herbertwest/shelves/08112015/00.JPG

The second row of books is basically THE PASSAGE (french/english books) + Neil Gaiman + Joe Hill + Henri Loevenbruck, a french author.
The next row is only Maxime Chattam, a french author that was on stage with Steve when he was in Paris : books + essays.
http://club-stephenking.fr/img/collection-herbertwest/shelves/08112015/01.JPG

Not much : mostly King audiobooks + some non-king graphic novels (including LOCKE & KEY)
http://club-stephenking.fr/img/collection-herbertwest/shelves/08112015/02.JPG

King's first french editions (first four shelves), then 2 shelves of short stories / anthologies by King, and bottom two shelves of books ABOUT King.
http://club-stephenking.fr/img/collection-herbertwest/shelves/08112015/03.JPG

On the left + first shelf on the right = Bernard Werber, a french author who is my favorite after King.
Right shelf under the skulls : King related graphic novels + Frankensteins (intro by Steve)
Then a shelf related to The Dark Tower, and under it some King movie press kits.

Some of my birthday gifts

- From Gollancz, a UK sampler of the upcoming Joe Hill's THE FIREMAN

http://club-stephenking.fr/img/collection-herbertwest/shelves/05122015/05122015__000.jpg

- Neil Gaiman's limited edition : the truth is in the black cave
My wife didn't notice it is actually signed (and not only a fac simile on the slipcase), but she originally bought it cause it is a nice display book + the story takes places on the isle of Skye (Scotland) where a few years ago we did a hike during a roadtrip in Scotland. And i absolutely LOVED our hike at the Old Man of Storr : wonderful scenry of mountains and the sea.

http://club-stephenking.fr/img/collection-herbertwest/shelves/05122015/05122015__001.jpg

- some bottles that goes perfectly in the bookshelves.
A skull on the left (with Jack Daniels), and a bottle with Absinthe on the right. I think that it goes perfectly with the early 1900s books (Frankenstein, Hyde & Jekyll)

http://club-stephenking.fr/img/collection-herbertwest/shelves/20122015/IMG_8249.JPG

My secret santa sent me two things:
- an uncorrected proof of SCREAMPLAYS
- amazingly nice gunslingers bookends !

The other gifts were :

Some creepy masks :
http://club-stephenking.fr/img/collection-herbertwest/shelves/20122015/IMG_8250.JPG

I dont know if you remember it, but a couple of months ago (?), I shared a link to an artist that creates great bottles related to Lovecraft.
Some exemple of his work : http://www.crowsnbones.com/2015/06/creepy-lovecraftian-bottles-by-andrea-falaschi/
https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/aa/16/60/aa16607104ba32d2c6b86717a7c990cd.jpg
Somehow I knew that my wife would try to get one. She wasnt sure that I liked the ones that are Cthulu (of course I do!) and since she broke an absinthe glass that I had since the beginning of when we started seeing each other year, she wanted to replace it.
So the artist created sent this one :

http://club-stephenking.fr/img/collection-herbertwest/shelves/20122015/IMG_8251.JPG
http://club-stephenking.fr/img/collection-herbertwest/shelves/20122015/IMG_8252.JPG

Which goes well with my older books and different bottles that I recieved at my birthdays :
http://club-stephenking.fr/img/collection-herbertwest/shelves/20122015/IMG_8255.JPG

Secret santas bookends, which i LOVE!
Wish I could put it with the Dark Tower books, but then it would break my shelf dedicated to it...

http://club-stephenking.fr/img/collection-herbertwest/shelves/20122015/IMG_8248.JPG

And since I 'proposed' to year in june, on her birthday during a hot air balloon, when the other day I saw this 3D cart I simply couldn't resist :
http://club-stephenking.fr/img/collection-herbertwest/shelves/20122015/IMG_8259.JPG

We exchanged our rings a month ago in Montreux, in front of the Freddie Mercury statue (she is a huge fan of him, and Queen's music as been an important part of her life and her family's), so I gave her an official replica of Freddie Mercury's statue :
http://club-stephenking.fr/img/collection-herbertwest/shelves/20122015/IMG_8258.JPG

So, now the bookshelves look like that (they need to be reorganised a bit, and I will be getting new books to get in so...) :
http://club-stephenking.fr/img/collection-herbertwest/shelves/20122015/IMG_8260.JPG

Since I have moved flat and now has new shelves, I want to develop my collection as in the past I restrained myself because of a lack of space.
I was recently contacted by a belgium collector that wanted to sell her collection, so I grabbed a few books of hers and recieved them today : 30 books, after making sure she sent me the details and confirmed that those that I wouldnt plan to resell but keeping are actually first french editions.

So here are the 30 books that i have recieved :

Every single french edition of RAGE, in pretty good condition ! I originally wanted to resell them, but now cannot decide if I actually want to sell them all or not...
http://club-stephenking.fr/img/collection-herbertwest/shelves/2016/16012016/01.jpg

For selling : COLORADO KID (who was only printed once in France, the publisher told me 10 000 copies I believe, and can only be found as used now as it is not reprinted). It is weird though, because I believe that the english version gets reprints, right?
Also available for sale, is an unnumbered french limited edition of THE GREEN MILE 1 with fac simile message and signature by Steve.
http://club-stephenking.fr/img/collection-herbertwest/shelves/2016/16012016/02.jpg

A set of mass paperbacks for IT
http://club-stephenking.fr/img/collection-herbertwest/shelves/2016/16012016/03.jpg

Bunch of 1st french editions I was lacking.

http://club-stephenking.fr/img/collection-herbertwest/shelves/2016/16012016/05.jpg

Also, among the books is one that I have never heard about before : in France, IT was released in 2 volumes by Albin Michel. I now have what seem to be the canadian version which is 1 big book of 1120 pages. Printed in canada, mine has a sticker price in dollars (canadian I guess). The odd thing is that the book opens with a "1" like in book 1, but I dont see any "2" at the middle or anywhere actually. Sort of odd, but the book is complete.

Nothing fancy. Just something I never heard about.

Sometimes, when I have some spare time, I go to some websites and check the 40 pages or so of auctions & ads related to Stephen King.
Most of the time, it's just a waste of time. And some other time, you get lucky and accidently discover some item you never heard about.

That was the case last weekend when an auction listed Stephen King in a (french) magazine from 1986, and was mentionning an essay written by King.
I ordered it, and it's true. It's a translation of the introduction to JimThompson's NOW AND ON EARTH

My second favorite author is Bernard Werber, a french author that is literally considered as a superstar in Korea & Russia (only his first book has been translated in english, as EMPIRE OF THE ANTS. As a side note, while King was in front of 2500 people in France, the same evening he was in front of 10,000 in korea).

I personally know that author since about a decade, after meeting him in a signing and presenting my research about his work, which I am trying to turn into a book.
I know that he regularly invite some friends over on sundays for talking and playing a game (a werewolf card game, where villagers are trying to find out who are the werewolves decimating the village : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Werewolves_of_Millers_Hollow ) and today was the first time I was actually invited to take part of it.

Before other people arrived, he gave me a copy of his next book to be published (in a month), as a proof copy (which he signed) & a final copy.
His next book is titled DEMAIN LES CHATS (lit : TOMORROW THE CATS)

http://club-stephenking.fr/img/collection-herbertwest/BW/2016/sept/demain-chats--0.JPG http://club-stephenking.fr/img/collection-herbertwest/BW/2016/sept/demain-chats--1.JPG

At the end of the afternoon, we chatted a bit more, and he invited me to his other flat to get a couple of more proofs he forgot to give me and chatted some more (including about King).

He asked me if I needed any other books, and I replied/made the mistake of mentionning I started collecting EMPIRE OF THE ANTS in foreign languages. At that point, he started handing me over many books in different languages (he was also pleased to clear out a bit of space).
So instead of leaving with only 3-4 books, I actually left with an entire boxful off books and 4-5 extra proofs I already had!
Oh, and I guess that my foreign collection will not solely focus on 1 specific book anymore.
I actually need to sort that box I had to carry for 1h in the metro. I didn't take a good picture, but i'd say there is about 20 books...

http://club-stephenking.fr/img/collection-herbertwest/BW/2016/sept/IMG_9733.JPG

On top of that, he also handed me that one :

http://club-stephenking.fr/img/collection-herbertwest/BW/2016/sept/IMG_9736.JPG

A printed version of his previous book, with his working title (as printed : the kingdom of dreams, which would become "THE SIXTH SLEEP")... so a version of a book BEFORE even the proof! Told me that he probably got it back from the person to whom he dedicated the book.
So, for me, this one is quite a gem!

THE BAZAAR OF BAD DREAMS got released on wednesday in France.

I was a bit worried that I wouldnt get a proof, because my contact told me in september she was going to send one. Never recieved it, and when I contacted her back I noticed that she left the company (she was doin an internship).
Worried that I would get a hole in my french proof collection, I contacted some previous contact, and now I got it as well as the final copy :)

Slippery rope for my collection : not too long ago, I was offered a "journalist" copy of a french King book. Exactly the same than the Proof copy I got, except that "Proof copy" was hidden by having a random/arty picture glued on the cover.

I've been offered a similar one for the french version of THE BAZAAR. It's not a lot of money (basically the price of the finished book) so i'll take it, but man, this is a sloppery rope if i have to hunt them down now! I already dont have THAT MUCH space left in my bookshelves!

Dont know if i'll try to get others as well, if offered for sale.
I bet that you guys would though! Most of you hunt down multiple variants, including printing variants sometimes! But having the same proof with a random picture glued on?

So a couple of months ago, I was literally gutted because I accidentally found a copy of a first french edition of DRACULA.
It was a bit pricey, but reasonnable for the book.
It seemed in good / very good condition, but I emailed the seller with a question because i thought i saw that pages were becoming loose.
Waiting for a reply from the seller, the book was sold.

I was gutted because it was the first copy i ever saw for sale, and technically I could have bought it but I was stupid to not rush on it.
Furthermore, I could have gotten it "cheapish" because I remembered I have a 100e voucher since december !

Anyway, I was on my laptop by 2am this week when I recieved an alert that a copy was available.
The seller provided some pictures showing some damages, described the copy thoroughly and it was a bit cheaper because of the lower state compared to that previous damn copy that I missed.

I literally jumped on the occasion : reading a bit the lenghtly description to be sure that I do not miss any important details because it was several hundred euros, but do not want that someone else jumps in the meantime if they got the alert !

So, here is my french first edition of DRACULA !

There interior is a bit damaged, but I was looking for a copy since awhile.
On the front cover is written "3000th". The seller discussed it with me as he is quite a savy librarian and keen of vampires among other stuff, and explained that this was a common practice back in the day to pretend that books were selling well, but that may not mean that this is a third printing as nothing else is different from copies without that mention (and yes, the copy i missed a couple of months ago DIDNT have that mention!)

http://club-stephenking.fr/img/collection-herbertwest/Collecting/misc/2017/dracula-first/dracula-fr-1st--01.jpg

So this copy joins this part of my library, which contains a first french edition of JEKYLL & a second french edition of Frankenstein.
Interestingly, I discovered through that seller something i didn't know about frankenstein. I always thought that the only known copy of the first french edition is at the national library. Well he proved me that a copy was sold a year or so ago through an auction house and went for 15,000€.
Unfortunately there are no actual pictures of the copy.
He also told me that over the course of years he seem to have noticed about 6 copies about the 1st french Frankenstein.

Anyway, here is the spot of my collection surrounded by a skull of JD, and bottle of absinthe and a freaky glass!

I'll try to put some new pictures of my collection this weekend.
In the meantime, here is something quite cool.

My second favorite author is Bernard Werber, a french writer unknown in the english world as only his first book was released in english.
Tonight was the signing for his latest book. I got that book signed but also, another one that I brought : a very rare first printing (1/12,000 copies) from his very first book. I already had another one that I got signed couple of years ago, but I wanted to get my second copy signed.

He showed it to him, and he told me something that I didnt know after checking it out : that the first phrase of the 1st printing is different from the subsequent printings who have an added sentence at the start!
So he signed the book and made a point to mention that specificity by writing (in french) : "this is the 1st sentence of the 1st version !!"

http://club-stephenking.fr/img/collection-herbertwest/BW/2017/october/IMG_3579.jpg http://club-stephenking.fr/img/collection-herbertwest/BW/2017/october/IMG_3580.jpg http://club-stephenking.fr/img/collection-herbertwest/BW/2017/october/IMG_3581.jpg

Posted on early october in the new P&J thread :

I've recently and accidentally came accross the following book (on the left).

This is a second french edition of FRANKENSTEIN.
The first edition contains 3 volumes is extremely rare. I recently found out that a copy sold for 15K€ about a year or so ago, so extremely unlikely.

What is cool about that new copy is that :
- well it's in much better shape than the copy that I already (have on the right), and I mean really more,
- this is a rare numbered version, and only 15 were printed on special paper! Who knows how many survived from 1922?

Very nice copy, but I am not sure yet. I may try to sell it.

Leave the tape alone. It's unlikely you could find matching paper to replace the FFE. Unless of course, the FFE have already been changed.

FFE?

Front free endpaper.

I think it would be impossible to remove the glue stains as they seem very old. Replacing the the FFE is an option but I think it would be better to keep the original.

Here is the french proof for SLEEPING BEAUTIES to be released on march 1st
Unfortunately, the cover is a bit damaged, but I only know of 5 copies so far : mine, another King fan + 3 that are being given away in a contest by the publisher

Here is the coolest acquisition I have recieved in awhile, which I accidentally came accross the other day, and cheaply.
It's not King related, but related to Bernard Werber, my second favorite author which I collect. He is a french collector who is not known in the english world because only his first book was translated into english : EMPIRE OF THE ANTS, but he sold millions of books and is considered as a superstar in Russia & Korea.

Well I've just recieved was the first issue of the second magazine he founded in high school. I don't how many copies were printed but I am guessing that there werent many of them!

I will need to get it signed next time I'll meet him.

Nice one, Jeremy...I may look for Werber's English translated novel.. is Empire pf the Ants generally regarded as his best?

Hey Stockerlone, if you find a german proof, I would LOVE to see it !
Or to get it from you if you don't plan on keeping it :)

@peripheral : it's not necessarily his best, but it gives a good overview of his style I believe. And dont fear the title : the book is not ONLY about ants. There are actually two sides of it : the world from the sight of ants, as well as some mystery from the point of view of humans :)

I still wish that an english speaking publisher would give Werber another chance

Do you know what is better than having a proof from a best-selling author?

Getting his name in the thank you note from a best-selling author :)

I recieved something I was looking for YEARS and never expected to find. Because it's an obscure fanzine type / publications, and because there are only 5 copies of it.

What is it?
Nothing fancy : in the 90s, a french guy created some bootleg copies of some books, only in an handful copies for his friend.
He made literally photocopies of the french publications of The Gunslinger in the french equivalent of the mag of Science Fiction and put them together.
There are only 5 copies, and I know of another copy in the hands of my friend, which told me about it about 15 years ago.

Oh, and I got it at a reasonable price.
Last year, I once had an alert about it, twice as expensive. Contacted the seller, which apologised cause told me he didnt have it anymore since YEARS and abebooks had a technical glitch showing for sale hundreds if not thousands of products that were sold years ago.

Long story short.
I accidentallly came accross those last week, jumped on it. Waited impatiently the seller to confirm the sale and sending it

Here it comes
