Wow.

I'm going back and forth between Cronenberg and Stone.

Gonna have to think on this one.

( because though I absolutely loved Star Wars and American Graffitti is wonderful ... George Lucas, not such a great director in my eyes; and I have never been greatly impressed with Fincher )

I love Eastern Promises & A History of Violence by Cronenberg, but I did't like Videodrome.

I like some of Stone's stuff, especially Platoon. I've never been a huge Star Wars fan, but I respect the impact they've had on pop culture and cinema alike.

Since I nominated Fincher, I will have to vote for him. I just feel he's a really underrated director. I've yet to see a bad film by him. Alien 3 was not great, but it was his first big film and there were so many problems with it that had nothing to do with him.

Se7en is a modern day classic. The Game is a very underrated film. If you haven't seen it, you should do so as soon as possible. Fight Club is such a great film. It's so fresh and different. Another underrated film is Zodiac. I'm not sure why it doesn't get a lot of attention, but it's such a great movie.

Keep your eyes out for David Fincher. He's directing the much talked about The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

Went with David Fincher, too. Fight Club was very impressive, but it's just so different that it becomes hard to describe. Over used words like "dark" and "violent" don't cover it, really. "Fucked up" might be better, but it's still doesn't come close enough. Also, have to agree with Still Servant that The Game is definitely an underrated classic. A classic "wtf?!?" film if ever there was one!

Regarding George Lucas: good at story ideas, not so good a director. Bear in mind that of the original trilogy, he only directed the first one - Irvin Kershner and Richard Marquand directed the sequels, respectively. And of the prequel trilogy, I only really enjoyed Revenge of the Sith, and even that was rushed in a few places. So, I must admit, as much of a Star Wars fan as I am, I am surprised to see him getting votes!

Admittedly, Star Wars did forever change the face of cinema and show what really could be done, so I suppose we've gotta be thankful for that. Just not so much for being responsible for creating Jar Jar Binks!

Lucas is only getting votes because of people's knee-jerk Star Wars fanboy response. Truth be told, he is an excellent producer and a horrible director. His source material going into the Star Wars prequels was superb. It was a much-loved franchise with wide appeal; there is no reason a good director shouldnt have been able to knock it out of the park. But instead they pretty much sucked. Not to mention that his "directing" produced some of the worst acting I have ever seen from Natalie Portman and Ewan McGregor, who are usually excellent actors. If he can't direct talent like that, his name shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence as the words "best" and "director."

I went with Fincher. :pirate:

On the plus side, feev: still over 6 days to go! It's definitely too early to tell if GL will even advance or not, especially considering there is a general dislike of him as a director.

Still...7 votes already?!?

Jean, I just meant I cant easily decide between any of Lucas's competitors. In an alternate universe in which Lucas is the world's greatest director Keanu and his facial expression can be considered the world's greatest actor, Stephanie Meyer the greatest writer, and Everybody Wang Chung Tonight the greatest musical contribution to society. Looking at this threads options seems like looking at one of those pictures where you're supposed to determine which doesn't belong.

Never a truer word spoken, SS. I used to be a fan of the Star Wars franchise, especially the Expanded Universe such as the comics and the New Jedi Order novels, but now Lucas has dragged it out and squeezed out so much money out of it that i'm just incredibly disillusioned by it all now. I can't even be bothered to check out a single ep of The Clone Wars computer animated series, and I loved the mini 2d eps they did a few years ago!

(Seriously, it was worth it just to see Mace Windu kick droid arse both with and without a lightsaber in 6 minutes! Best 6 minutes in the history of anything Star Wars ever!)

Absolutely, because one of those two votes is mine. Arguably one of the best American directors of the last twenty five years or so.

Oliver Stone is very hit and miss for me, although Platoon is probably my most favorite war movie ever.

Actually went with Oliver Stone on this one ...

SS - Nice call on Zodiac, btw. It's a very under-rated and textured film, IMHO, and I'm not even a Fincher fan.

re: Lucas - I guess I can see the Star Wars fanboy response - but him having the most votes, well that's surprising given the limited amount of actual directing that George Lucas has done. While I really enjoyed THX-1138 and American Graffitti, and they were both well directed, that's about it. I mean, Star Wars is one of my favorite all time films, but it's no directing masterpiece.

Could Lucas have handled a Dead Ringers ( one of my favorite Cronenberg films ) or a Talk Radio ? No way, I say.

I haven't seen The Fly, but I've seen almost all of Cronenberg's bigger films. Like I said before, I loved A History of Violence & Eastern Promises. I really didn't enjoy Videodrome.

I do feel that Fincher has a better body of work. I know Cronenberg is picky about what he shoots, but he hasn't made a film since 2007's Eastern Promises.

As for Stone, I know a ton of people who just hate the guy. Most don't even know why.

I would like to ask WHY is Lucas tied for the lead people?? I'm one of the biggest Star Wars geeks out there and even I don't think Lucas deserves this much accolades as a director. His only saving grace is having good actors to help him get out of the mess his stilted directing puts him in. He can write, he can produce wonderful films, but he can't direct a film to the QuikieMart. If you think otherwise, forget about Star Wars (the original film I mean) and look at Star Wars II: Attack of the Clones. Look at horrible dialogue between Hayden Christensen and Natalie Portman. (Who ever thought Portman could deliver such stilted dialogue?) Lucas is pretty good with the action part of his films, but he's spectacularly horrible with the softer side. The greatest part of the entire Star Wars franchise (The Empire Strikes Back) wasn't directed by Lucas. It was directed by Irvin Kershner.

DoctorDodge
07-08-2010, 05:32 PM
Couldn't have put it better myself, Sam. That's why he had to label the 1997 versions of his original trilogy as "Special Editions" and not "Directors Cuts": aside from the first one, he was mucking about with other people's films!

ROFL! Jean, I'm not sure your sign will encourage many to reveal their faces.

IMO, Lucas's best work was American Graffiti.

(Very young and very hot Harrison Ford as Bob Falfa, the drag racer that challenges John (Paul Le Mat).)

ETA: Ooops.

A brief listing of notable cast members of American Graffiti:

Richard Dreyfuss - Curt
Ron Howard - Steve (as Ronny Howard)
Paul Le Mat - John
Charles Martin Smith - Terry (as Charlie Martin Smith)
Cindy Williams - Laurie
Candy Clark - Debbie
Mackenzie Phillips - Carol
Wolfman Jack - Disc Jockey
Bo Hopkins - Joe
Harrison Ford - Bob Falfa

And, of course, Suzanne Somers as "the blonde in the Cadillac"
