Didn't see this one anywhere, maybe I missed it. If I did, cry pardon.
Who would be the best actor(past or present) to play Roland if you could have a fantasy casting call? Who do you think out of the people we have now could fill his shoes?

My thoughts for any actor would have to lie with Clint Eastwood, King just uses too much of his energy in Roland. Sadly, Clint is too old now.

My vote for anyone right now has to lie with Josh Brolin. He looks very Rolandish and I have seen him in a couple of westerns. I think he would be good for the role.

monte and i were just talking about this last night in chat.

since i don't have a time machine, my vote is still firmly in the adam baldwin box.

If we can't build a time machine and get Fistful of Dollars Clint Eastwood, then no one.

This is Roland:

no, he's too muscular for eddie.

OchrisO

He could drop weight. Ever seen how much weight Christian Bale lost for The Machinist?

I like my actors to earn their money by putting their health at risk.

i love the machinist. i'm just saying, he's not how i see eddie at all.

Can you post a pic of Adam Baldwin - I don't know what he looks like.

I'm another Clint voter - I don't think he has to be too young though, I picture Roland as looking in his 50's.

When he gets a bit older I think Viggo Mortensen in his Aragorn get up, would be passable.

This wasn't my idea, so I can't take credit for it, but some guy posted at the .net that he thought Hugh Laurie (from House) would make a good Roland. I think it was an excellent idea. He's much how I pictured him in my head.

and for those who asked...here's a picture of Adam Baldwin, he was Jayne on Firefly.

Someone else said this in another DT forum and I agree with him : I don't think there is any actor who could play the character Roland and give it the justice it deserves, including Clint Eastwood in his Fistful of Dollars days.

MonteGss
10-24-2007, 07:49 AM
That is very negative and cynical feev, don't you think? :P

NOBODY is going to be perfect, that is impossible. So, we have to go off of looks and/or acting ability. :)

I never said the word perfect. :)

Bullshit.

Clint Eastwood would obviously make the best Roland, but it's just not possible now, considering the age. I think Thomas Jane would make a good Roland. But I don't think he has the eyes for it.

Yeah, but that's not why. It's funny. I catch myself constantly studying actors in movies now. I'm always picking people out and telling my husband: "He would make a good Roland." He just laughs at me.

fernandito
10-24-2007, 10:48 AM
It's weird, because when I first started the series I logged onto a forum and someone said "Ewan Mcgregor could play Eddie!"...I was only a couple of pages into DoTT when I read that, so when I finally got to meet Eddie I pictured him as E.M then and throughout the rest of the series

MWAHAHAHAHAAAAA!!!!

Ok, I can't not stand Hugh Laurie, in fact I think he's fab - but he's primarily known as a comedian in the UK and I'd have a lot of trouble believing in him as Roland...that being said this photo of him is great and very Roland-esque (imdb won't let me copy the image)
http://www.imdb.com/gallery/granitz/5103/Events/5103/HughLaurie_Grani_10081514_400.jpg.html?hint=nm0491 402

But...he also played Bertie Wooster in the televised series and also many roles in "Black Adder", one of his incarnations being Prince George - the wigged link I provided before. I've never seen House, but Prince George was a great role...heres a clip...Monte - DON'T CLICK THE LINK :D

Actually...do, its cool :P

Harrald
10-24-2007, 11:49 AM
I think in his day Clint Eastwood was the only choice for the role. Now Hugh Laurie is probably the best choice. I've been a fan of his since his Black Adder days and especially the Jeeves and Wooster series he did. Out of all the actors out there I think he has the chops to pull it off.

As for Eddie That should be an entirely different thread.

And other main characters too?

The girl who initially got me into DT always pictured Eddie as Ed Norton, which I could see working. I always picture (even though lookswise I know he's wrong) Eric Stoltz as Eddie, the way he looked in Pulp Fiction. And Suze as Lauryn Hill. I'm totally stumped on Jake.

I watched the clip. It doesn't even seem like the same person. If that was the person I was thinking for Roland, I'd shoot myself. Why don't we just ignore his past and pretend it didn't happen? That way, he would make a great Roland in his present appearance. :D

Good Ideas one and all! The Hugh Laurie thing is kind of funny, I would have never thought of him as Roland. He is a chameleon however, he played the nerdy dad in the ooey-gooey stuart little movies, now he plays the disgruntled Dr. on House. Here are some Josh Brolin pics for anyone who doesn't know what he looks like. He is young in these, but I can see him as Roland 20 years later.

see i'm all for a computer animation using the drawings of Jae Lee. I can't think of any actor who wouldn't mess it up. It is such topic of debate...who would, or could...or should it or shouldn't it. I have to say that i just can't see it being made right by using real actors. The comics were so amazingly well done that I think they should take that and make it into seven to ten computer animated movies.

Clint Eastwood in his 30's, 40's and 50's even was perfect, but now that he's in his 70's I am afraid he's too old.
I think Viggo Mortensen might work for Roland:

Not sure yet about Eddie, but I know this is wierd, but Whoopi Goldberg for Susannah works for me. They almost would have to shoot her in two hair do's-the dread lock look for the Detta, and more of a bun hair job for Susannah.

I think Leto could be a good Eddie, and not just from his acting in Requiem, but also from his acting in Lord of War. He's pretty damn funny in that movie, very Eddie-like. For instance, he made a map of the Ukraine out of a kilo of cocaine. Would Eddie and the eminent junkie do that? I think so.

Roland is so hard to cast. I'm still undecided on that one. House is to small physically to do it for me.

OK I am going to make one more plea for this guy. I haven't even seen this movie yet, but my cousin had the new Grindhouse videos from Tarantino. Look at the one with Rose McGowen on the cover. Freaking Roland is to the right of her. I am telling you, Josh Brolin looks very much the part of Roland in my mind, and he looked very much the part on the cover of that movie as well. I have found a pic of him in a movie called "No Country For Old Men" tell me this doesn't look like Roland!:arg:

OK I gotta say it, Hugh Laurie looks about as Rolandish as a little bitty kitty does a tiger. The characteristic I am looking for when it comes to Roland is GRIT. Look it up. You will see a definition of Clint Eastwood beside it with something referencing John Wayne as well. I don't see an ounce of GRIT anywhere around Hugh Laurie. As I said before he is a great actor and has the ability to be a chameleon, but would you expect Hugh Laurie to come out guns blazing and save you from the baddies? I am thinking a big NO on that one. He may talk them to death, but certainly not shoot them to death.

I am sorry - I hadn't watched too many westerns before I read TDT (or after, for that matter), and that may be the reason I never ever imagined Roland as Eastwood, or the whole setting as western-ish. Sorry Jean if you thought I was pickin' on ya. I think that we all will be surprised when they pick Roland. I just don't want some Hollywood pretty boy to get it who can't act his way out of a paper bag. Hugh Laurie is a good actor, but I can't see him as Roland. Now Hugh Jackman, my eyes were opened to that possibility when I saw him in "Oklahoma" yesterday. I think he would be as good a candidate as Josh Brolin.

I see some serious grit when he is dry chewing that vicodin

I just think the man has the indifferent, dry type humor that the part needs. Weather or not he could shoot em up and kill em all remains to be seen because I don't think his House character will ever have to do that.

I think he has the depth to play it for sure, no question.

And I agree with Jean, Clint was never my choice for it. Too easy for one thing

I never thought of Hugh Laurie in that way, and at first I was just like "No, now way could he be Roland." But now that I think about it I guess he would be alright, I don't think his voice is right though (lol I just happen to be watching House at the moment.)*shrugs*I always imagine Roland with a deep and commanding voice and Hugh doesn't sound right.

I have given this a lot of thought over time, like most DT fans have I am sure. There are only two characters in mind that I have casted. So here is my defense of Hugh Laurie as Roland.

Roland - Hugh Laurie
He is tall, thin, has very blue eyes, wears the scruffy unshaven look very well, has already played a character who everyone thinks is an prick, but at the same time immensely talented, and is a terrific actor

Eddie - Ed Burns
He might be a little too old now, but my defense for this one is Saving Private Ryan. Watch it again and you will see that Ed Burns has already played Eddie Dean, he just didn't know it.

Ok, bear with me on this, but I'm kinda of shocked that no one has mentioned Kurt Russell as a good choice for Roland. He has the eyes and the intensity. In my opinion, he is a great actor. He has done a little bit of everythng and has a broad range. And, although it isn't my absolute favorite western, he did well in Tombstone. I understand why people would like to see the Clint Eastwood from 40 years ago, but that is pointless. He is too old to do it now. And now there are rumors of a film adaption of the Dark Tower series. I truly hope that they don't make it into one of those crappy tv mini-series jobs. I hope they do feature film(s) with A-list actors and a healthy budget. Roland deserves no less. That leads me back to Kurt Russell! I don't really have any solid ideas for Eddie or Suzanna, but there are plenty of talented people to choose from these days.
Personally, I've actually been dreading a film version of the Dark Tower series. Dreading because, in my opinion, all previous film and TV versions of King's books have truly sucked. Thats especially hard to swallow since many of them had the potential to be great.

Or lets add Misery to that list--Kathy Bates won an Oscar didn't she?

But I think Kurt is a little too blond and also too old :(

Guys gotta be 60. I understand my guy Hugh is also up there a bit but he could at least pull off a little younger for the flash back imo.

I've decided Mac (from the PC/Mac commercials and recently Die Hard 4) should be Eddie.

 Sorry, I wasn't thinking of those specific movies when I said that. That was too general of a comment on my part. Not all of King's movies are terrible. When I said that, I was thinking of movies like Pet Cemetary, Night Shift, Needful Things, Salem's Lot (both versions, but especially the newest), Ride the Bullet, Room 1308, Sleepwalkers, Dreamcatcher, Secret Window, ect. The movies Brice mentioned didn't really focus on the supernatural elements (except for The Green Mile) so I tend to forget about them when I think of King. Btw, I do think the movies on Brice's list are all excellent. I also love Kubrick's "The Shining." I guess I wish there were more hits like those than misses like the movies I listed. :D

All this talk of people being too old, yet Roland is over 1000 years old and has debilitating arthritis by book 5. :P

Oh, and though the rest of the remake mostly sucked, I really liked how James Cromwell (http://imdb.com/name/nm0000342/) played Callahan in the newer miniseries version of Salem's Lot.

That might be true for his chronological age but I always got the sense that Roland was in late 40's early 50's by the series. (The same age as King at the time). And Eddie is about 24/25 when we first met him in "The Drawing of the Three"

I already mentioned it on the other movie thread but I now think they should use motion-capture animation to create The Dark Tower movies like they did for Beowulf. That movie looked pretty awesome and animation would fix the problem with Jake aging as well as some of the special effects. If they decide to do this then whatever actor they pick to voice Roland will not have to look 100% like him but just be able to pull off the voice and the movements.

If there is a small screen or big screen adaption, it would be great if Scott Weiland (lead singer for Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver) played Roland. In the Velvet Revolver video for "She Builds Quick Machines", Weiland looks like a 30ish Clint Eastwood. Make-up could give him the weathered look and maybe some acting lessons and they would be all set!

Crimson King - Cristopher Walken (just plain evil!)
Randall Flagg - Roger Daltry (he was a great villain in "Highlander:The Series!)

Jay Hernandez-Too much of a pretty boy metro-sexual. When we first meet Eddie, he's described as "cute" but barely so by the stewardess who gets him a gin.

Thin, yes. Almost gaunt. And red-haired. That's how I picture him. *shrug*

Get that kid that plays Percy Weasley to play Sheemie, hee.

This is sad. Most of the guys that I've watched growing up that I figure could take Eastwood's place (Kilmer, Estevez, etc.), have all gotten fat. And as much as I hate to say it, the one actor that has that closeness in profile to Eastwood (even though I don't want to see him diminish another good role), to play as Roland Deschain is Tom Cruise:

http://www.beautyanalysis.com/images/pg42RF---Tom-Cruise-%5BB%5D-.jpg

As far as the rest of his ka-tet goes though... that's not as hard to figure.

Eddie Dean/Christian Bale:

Jake "Bama" Chambers/Nathan Gamble:

(Unless they find some unknown, he's really the only one that looks good enough for it)

Oy of course would have to be something made of CGI.

I think nathan Gamble would be good as Jake, he is still very young, but we had to watch Jake grow up in the books, and if they did make 7 movies Jake would have to start out pretty young. Then we could watch him grow on film.

I don't know why I haven't, I loved (most of) the Batman films. I think the fact that the kids follow me into every room that I go into and demand lengthy explanations for what I'm doing...might have something to do with my lack of film watching :D

Clancy Brown's too old for the Tick Tock Man. I think he'd be better suited to Flagg, or even Steven Deschain.

Has anyone said Kurt Russell for Roland yet? He's been good in westerns and far out sci-fi. He was Snake Plisken and Wyatt Earp for god's sake. That's Roland all rolled into one.

I think I found a good candidate for Eddie Dean. I have been watching the CW show... I know not much good on there, but I really like "Supernatural" the guy who plays the character of Dean seems to have the wisecracking abilities of Eddie in the book . Here is his pic and bio.
