In the original version (can't think of the page number, but it's during the palaver with Brown), the narrator says the line that is in the title.

What questions was the gunslinger waiting for?

Questions about him, questions about what he was doing, where he was going and what he was looking for. The usual questions that someone asks of another on the road basically

Well if you meet people once in a blue moon because you live in the middle of nowhere questions should come at an out of the blue meeting.

I guess, though, that's fair enough, then. I should've guessed it wouldn't have been anything too much more complex than that.
