I know Stephen King is very high on Shirley Jackson, and I know she's written some classic works, but alas I've never read any. If you're like me, perhaps this book should suffice:

I've always like Jackson. Don't forget that she also wrote the original story "The Birds" (remember the movie?). The story has a different ending than the movie.

I thought it was Daphne du Maurier?

Jean is correct, The Birds was written by Daphne du Maurier.

True Mrs. Jackson did not write The Birds, as previously stated Du Maurier did so. Maybe you got Jackson's The Bird's Nest confused with The Birds, John. Anyhow, everything BOTH ladies wrote is marvelous so you can't go wrong with either one of them. :)

Just ordered that volume of Shirley Jackson, along with the new volume of Philip Roth coming out in September. I do love me some LOA! :nana:

Another senior moment! I seem to be having more of these more often recently. Maybe I'd better slow down.

The Haunting of Hill House is wonderful. The only other Jackson story I've read so far is The Lottery, which is like written perfectly.

don't miss We Have Always Lived in the Castle.

I've also read her short stories (unfortunately, not the best known collection: still can't find a readable format). The ones that are creepy are creepy beyond belief. The way she uses hints and omission... it's just the kind of creepy bears love

Bears, which volume is this? Let me see if I can improve things for you...

it's The Lottery and Other Stories: I found only a pdf in the Treasury, and when I converted it to .mobi with Calibre, it was with such awful misprints (much more than their usual rate in converted books) that it wasn't readable...

on the plus side, there are tons of other treasures in the goblins' cave!

on the minus side, it won't open for bears today...

ETA:

and immediately after I posted this, it opened!!! WOW!!! goblins do possess powerful magic!!!

yes, sorry. The Cave has many other doors (there are other worlds than these...) Some of those "Other Worlds" have caused the cave to misbehave and close doors which should always remain open. Goblins apologise and believe all is now well.

how should goblins apologize??? they opened the door to miracles and wonders and treasures beyond compare!

bears should look again in the cave for the book he seeks. look for "The Lottery and Other Stories (Penguin Modern Classics)"
(The Librarian goblin has been notified of other books that interest bears)

great!!! bears will immediately see if azw3 works for their kindle, they had never known about this format before!

stroppygoblin

azw3 is the kindle format :) (it's basically mobi with Amazon DRM)

The library goblin wishes bears to know that their requests have been fulfilled....

Jean

it worked! it worked!!!! and goblins opened bears' eyes on a new kindle format!!!!!!!!

now bears will definitely stop doing whatever else they were pretended to be doing, and at last start doing nothing but reading!!!!!!!!!!

Depressing, Disturbing and Delightful

have just finished The Lottery and Other Stories. Every one of them is a gem, all delightful, ranging from profoundly depressing to deeply disturbing; talking about the latter, The Renegade is the most disturbing story I've ever read in English. I wish I could unread it.

Wanting to unread a story because of its emotional impact is pretty high praise.

I'm starting The Haunting... as soon as I'm done with this post.
