View Full Version : How to display oversized books-My Pretty Pony, SOD, Knowing Darkness

What do you guys do with these?

I have customer built shelves in my home (Very old pictures (http://www.trunzos.com/main.php?g2_itemId=501)) that 12" deep which is overkill for just about every other book.

These guys don't even fit, depth-wise on the 12" shelves, and I'm not sure I want to dedicate 14"+ of vertical space so I can stand them upright.

How do y'all handle your exceptionally large books?

Craig, I have one shelf that is large enough for Pretty Pony (Knopf edition) and SOD. I still have no idea on how to adequately display the two Knowing Darkness volumes, especially the traycased edition. That baby is just massive! I also have the same size problem with the s/l of Eyes of the Dragon. It's just big. I actually have that stored in its original mailing box.

Many of my bound manuscripts are also of a larger size. I store these laying down, on top of each other, actually. Each, of course, is in its own archival plastic bag.

My SOD, Pretty Pony and Centipede Salem's Lot gift editions are horizontally stacked on top of each other. My slipcased Knowing Darkness is standing upright on a side table (back to the wall).

I have them siting upright on a bottom shelf. The bookcase is deep enough to hold the books and the shelves are adjustable, so I have one huge shelf with only a few large books.

Same here - except for the traycased Knowing Darkness. That one is parked right beside my bookcase, on the floor.

Raising the shelf, provided you can, will provide storage (spine only viewable), but if you wanted to actually display some of these behemoths, it will take massive amounts of space.

Over the holidays I built a custom case to fit SOD and Knowing Darkness slipcased books with the plan to display them. However, I have since bought a few other big books and they are starting to crowd. The traycased Knowing Darkness sits on top of my mantle right now until I can figure out where it will go.

I customized my bookcase slightly by drilling four extra holes so I could raise a shelf just enough to store the tall books on the bottom shelf.

This is an old photo at this point, but you get the idea:

http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j158/JHPatrick/Books/030709Bookcase-6c.jpg

That height also allows for non-King large editions such as Gaiman's ABSOLUTE SANDMAN and Joe Hill-featured IDW: THE FIRST DECADE.

I don't own the massive KNOWING DARKNESS as yet, so I can't address that particular storage issue.

I'm using the bottom shelf of a curio cabinet to display my Knowing darkness facing out. The whole shelf is just for that one book.

Thanks for all the tips folks. Guess I have to just adjust the shelf up for now. I'm out of storage space, so they'll have to stay flat horizontally as they are now, but eventually I plan on building another set of shelves for just my SK stuff and will make sure they are deep enough to hold all of these.

jeez RF, how many copies of each book do you have?! hehe.

Do those stands you have the books leaning on prevent spine lean?

Randall Flagg

The stands just display the books. They don't really contribute to or prevent spine lean.

I lied in my earlier post, kinda, lol.

A couple of days ago I moved my large books including Knowing Darkness and 'Salem's Lot to now sit on top of one of my bookshelves. The bookshelf is next to a cabinet that rises higher that the bookshelf. So I have the books rested against the cabinet and on top of the bookshelf. The books are now pretty high and no longer a focus of my collection, but they look pretty good up there and it clears up space in my shelves below.

You can always get a very cool "Dolso" case and put it on top of the book shelf or a table:

That one fits exactly on top of one of my bookcases, with just a few inches to spare between it and the ceiling. A bit too high to admire daily, but I just don't know where else to put it.
My Knowing Darkness editions I put on the floor next to the case.

HA! You might want to get it while I still have 2 hands & 10 fingers to work with!!

Let's see - been building 'woodies' for about 7 years or so, to date I've only lost the USE of three fingers -- means I have 5 fingers & two thumbs to go -- Quick math in the head means I have around 10-12 years to go before they're all useless............ by that time I might be too senile to read, much less build a case. :scared::panic:

My motto?? - 'I HAVE A WOODIE FOR YOUR BOOK' :nana: :nana:

Are books (like the general population) just growing too large?
From back to front: Knowing Darkness S/L, The Secretary of Dreams Volume One (Lettered), 'Salem's Lot S/L, The Eyes of the Dragon S/L, Blockade Billy Lettered, The Stand S/L, Dolan's Cadillac S/L, Carrie 1st Edition, The Long Walk, The Colorado Kid.

I really think it just depends on the book. Knowing Darkness and SOD are the sizes they are, because of the type of book they are. Focusing on the artwork. I can't really speak for most of the other one's as I haven't seen many of them in person, except for the Billy, which I didn't really think was all that big. It's size is however determined by the art portfolio. I love the traycased Knowing Darkness. I wish I had one, even though it is gigantic.

Not a "book", but how the heck do you display your "Taylor Cujo" guitar? I can't play mine (despite 6 months of lessons) worth a darn. I know that most collectors, myself included don't really read their S/L book, but the guitar just seems so lonesome shoved in my closet, and seems to be a waste by not being carefully played. My guitar instructor (who owns >100 guitars) says it's the best sounding acoustic he's ever heard.

I may have said something to this effect earlier in the thread, but one of the tragic things about collecting is being able to actually "display" the collectible. Art, generally hangs on a wall, autographed balls go in cases and shirts/jerseys on the wall again, but what do you do to display a treasured book(s)? That is what inspired me to seek out "Dolso" in the first place and work with him (mostly him) to create this piece:

http://a.imageshack.us/img812/922/lotrcase001.jpg

To display my prized 2nd edition LOTR books. Now the pic does not do it justice, but it is accessible and visible, just like some other folks collections. If you can't display it, its almost like why have it right? At least that's my humble opinion, FWIW. Now, If I can just get the wife to allow the LOTR books case in a common area with Mick Jagger, I'm gold!!!!! LOL LOL LOL

Jerome, even if you don't actually play your guitar you can very easily 'display' it by placing it on a guitar stand in a nice spot in your book room, living room or wherever you fancy.

This is just a very basic model but there are many options:

http://images.musicalads.co.uk/stand.jpg

For what it's worth, I would gladly take the guitar off your hands (I've been playing for over twenty years) but I can't afford it.

*edit: I just noticed that the guitar is actually on a stand already in the pic. Is it yours?

If you have the wall space you can get a guitar hanger which is basically the top portion of your guitar stand that can be mounted on the wall.

Agreed. Personally I like the look of the guitar on the stand in a nice corner better but hanging it from the wall works equally well.

Thats a pretty cool idea. Would love to see end result from anyone who engages Dick to do something like this...

I was looking through my IT portfolio the other day and realised that some of the art seems to be on different quality (thickness) paper. I can't recall details of its release, but does that sound right to others? I think the colour pieces were on thicker paper than the rest.... I mention it as I was unsure if the thinner pieces would display as well (last as long, not discolour etc)

I'm the same. I enjoy the fact that I have the portfolio, but to open it up and look at each piece when, as clumsy as I am, I have a very good chance of damaging it, I'd just rather not take the chance. I can enjoy the pictures on the web just as much.

I am the exact opposite I suppose. In fact, the basis on my friendship with, Dick Olson, is that I wanted to be able to display my LOTR books. If you can't show them off, then what's the point? It became the impetus of the "Dolso Case Editions". I love to point and show them off, but that's just me I guess.

Books upto 14" will fit in the expedit - SOD is in there near bottom right.

Anything larger would have to go on the shelves, tons of space between the top shelf and ceiling.

I've got various random photos in my photobucket thing taken over the last few years that I can stick up, most are from when I still lived with my folks and had all my books just literally strewn all over the room, I could stick those up for now then when I've finished organising (next up is some more shelves - just small floating ones then I'm putting in another of those expedit units) the place properly I could take some more updated shots in a few months so you can see what it looks like a bit neater.

Nothing overly expensive and all budget shelving etc but hey you just do the best with what you've got right and try to make it look tidy.

Hi All,

I recently bought the Lettered edition of Full Dark No Stars. The traycase has hinges on the top and a latch on the bottom. I don't like standing it on the latch, and it seems a shame to leave it flat. Any body have any recomdations on a book stand to use for this?

Thanks,
