Because of the ending, which I disagree with but accept, I can't give this one a 5, so it gets a 4. The characters drove this tale more than the story itself, and I really liked that about it.

meh! may feel different on a reread, but one of my least favourites

I agree about the ending, it really seemed rushed to me and its a shame after such a brilliant build-up ... 4

Was thinking either 4 or 5, but went with 5. Really does have that lucid feel of a vintage King novel.

Waiting for the paperback to come out so I can read it. GRRR.

ditto, though, since the paperback isn't very likely to come out in time to meet me in Paris, I am beginning to think I'll buy whatever edition I see first...

The hardcover is a beautiful piece of book.

I can forgive the ending being less than 100% satisfying simply because the rest of the book was so enjoyable. Five from me, and I went into it thinking it was just going to be OK-ish.

Agreed! It was the reason I started collecting hardcovers. I've been buying hardcovers of paperbacks I already have! ;)

I gave it a 5, mashed with gravy.

That's what I loved most about this one. I've been so disappointed with his books for the last few years (probably everything since DTVII, although having said that, I haven't felt compelled to read a lot of his stuff since then) that when I got into this one, I REALLY got into it. Best book I've read of King's since I first found The Dark Tower

Wavered b/t 4 and 5...and going with 4. Very enjoyable read. Good story with good characters but just not in the rarefied air of my absolute favorites.

I really liked it. Moves superfast, hardly anything but quick descriptions and dialogue but still ended up being 1000+ pages.
I like how SK explained how his editor helped him cut the fat in the authors note.

On a side note it is THE WORST narrarted audiobook.
I hope that guy never reads another King book.

I'm way behind on my reading, so have to give this a NEVER READ. Ask me again in two years.

That's a shame. But I can't say anything, because I just became a King fan about 2 or 3 years ago, so there's books out there that are really old that I've never read. Keep Under the Dome on your list. It's really good!

It was the ending that kept me from giving this the top vote.

Yeah, the ending had alot of veracity issues, from a scientific perspective. I just didn't believe it. Although, I still enjoyed reading the novel, and as that is what I use as my tool for ranking, it still got a 5.

Loved it. Definitely restored my faith in King (although Duma Key did that a bit too).

liked it a lot...had kind of a "the stand" kinda thing goin on. i can see why most give it a 4 tho...the ending does seem pretty rushed. but it's all about the story, right? if there's one thing stephen king can do, whether a certain story/book is good or not, he's able to suck you in til the end.

amazon.com. got the hardcover for 8 bucks used, and it was practically brand new. amazon = the way to go for books.
