View Full Version : Best Supporting Character--Nominations Closed

Jean

This thread is for members to nominate characters for the Award for Best Supporting Character. In order for a character to be eligible for nomination they must satisfy the definition of a supporting character listed below, and they must be a character from one of Stephen King's published works, including any of his novels, novellas, and short stories. Characters from titles published under the pseudonym Richard Bachman are also eligible.

To nominate a character for this category, simply post your choice in this thread. In order for a character to be placed onto the voting ballot for the Award the nominated character must be seconded and thirded, also in this thread. This is to ensure that we do not have an overly long list of contenders for the Award, and that--by virtue of the nomination process--each character listed on the ballot is guaranteed to have at least something of a following come voting time. Please note that you MUST clearly state in your post that you are seconding or thirding a nomination for it to count. Feel free to deliberate and discuss your choices in this thread.

While you may second or third a nomination more than once, we ask that there be only one new nomination per member.

Supporting Character- Any character in a literary work whose contribution to the advancement of the plot, protagonist, or antogonist is significant, without being the main villain or hero/heroine of the story.

That's a good question. I think we considered him a protagonist last time (I'll go have a look), but it's always hard when the protagonist is more or less collective, as in It or Desperation. Now in the Protagonist thread I see Larry Underwood nominated separately, and the Losers collectively. Got to think about it.

I think it's because there can be a bit of ambiguity in who is or isn't a protagonist or antagonist and arguments can be made in many cases for multiple characters (or even no character...or a thing or place even fulfilling those roles). I say let it remain ambiguous and popular opinion can decide who is or isn't.

Ladies and gentlemen who nominated or seconded Marinville and/or David Carver: who do you consider the Protagonist of Desperation? Can either of these nominations be moved to Protagonist? Or maybe a collective Protagonist should be considered, as we did in the case of It?

pathoftheturtle

... maybe a collective Protagonist should be considered, as we did in the case of It?I could support that. I think it would be a real honor to David to be nominated for Protagonist, and I hate to be petty in this game, where the real point is to have fun. I'm just concerned for all of us to fully appreciate the book.

Every good story involves some form of conflict. As I see it, a protagonist is the character in a given story who overcomes its main obstacles.

IMO, in Desperationthe key obstacles turn out to be Marinville's own personal flaws. David leads him to overcome them, making the man a hero. Such function is often displayed by a common, major type of secondary character.

This is not like DT 7, where Oy's sacrifice supports the protagonist's continuing quest.

Sure, Tak antagonizes all the people in this book, but that, too, is a catalyst to Johnny's development, in my view. Could the antagonist have been otherwise defeated? Perhaps... but that would have been a different story.

Would Red (Shawshank) be considered the protagonist or would that be Andy? Since the story is told by Red, I'm guessing that Andy would be the secondary character, thus leading me to cast my vote for him.

I'll fifth Cuthbert
I'll fifth Wireman

...Since the story is told by Red, I'm guessing that Andy would be the secondary character...I don't think that's a rule at all. Narrator doesn't have to be the protagonist. Such conventions of form are mostly separate matters.

For what its worth, I see the protagonist is the character that meets with, struggles with, and overcomes adversity/antagonists.

Thus I see it as follows:

Andy: major protagonist
Red: Minor protagonist
Warden: Major Antagonist
Hadley: Minor antagonist
Bogs: Minor antagonist
