Heya guys! Last year, The Constant Reader Awards were, as Borat would say, "great success", and it was decided we would hold them on an annual basis. Well, the time you all no doubt have been waiting for so anxiously is at hand!

Aaron, who really was the mastermind behind last year's CRAs (I only came up with the general concept), is inundated with life and so has given the reins over to me. Hopefully, like last time, Jean will be able to lend a hand.

The format will be largely the same. The first polls of Round One will open up March 1st. The first four brackets will go up, and will be open for a week. There will be a total of 12 brackets in the first round, so it will take three weeks. All King books will be graded on a scale of 1-5, inlcuding Under the Dome.

Alongside, we will also begin nomination threads for our various Appended Categories.

Thank you for taking the reins on this one, pablo! :)

I'm excited to see if the winners this year will be different from last year.

I am so glad to see these back. I am going to make sure everyone on SKMB knows we are doing it too.

I'll make sure notices go up like we did last year.

I know my votes will be a bit different this year than they were last year. I've done a few re-reads and found that I like some better than I used to and some less! Thanks for doing all this, pablo - should be fun!

Aaaand we're underway! Go to the Round 1--Ranking sub-forum to vote NOW.

Like last time, polls will be open exactly for one week, after which they'll automatically close, and we'll reveal the Final Average Score (or "FAS") for each book. As per our rules, the two books with the best FAS move onto Round 2.

Have fun, everyone!

mae

I'd also like to remind you (and let the newcomers know) that while the bracket winner and runner-up will automatically progress to the second round, after all the voting of the first round is completed the top six "losing" books will also move on, as the so-called wildcards. Quick note on a small change in the roster of our pollable books: I decided to remove Nightmares in the Sky from voting (if you don't know which book I'm talking about that's exactly the reason why), and replace it with Under the Dome, causing a small shift in how books are seeded in brackets as compared with last year's tournament.

Just like last year, the next brackets will go up three days after the previous, to cut down on overall time spent on this tournament, which will take a considerable time to complete as it is (last time we commenced with Round 1 on November 11, 2008 and finished the last of the voting on March 5, 2009: 3 months and 23 days).

Now I just need to look over all our data from the first CRAs (available here (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/forumdisplay.php?f=181), if you're curious, especially those that will be participating in this for the first time), and remember how we calculated and tabulated everything. It was pretty thorough :)

Sure thing. If anyone's not clear on anything dealing for the Constant Reader Awards, feel free to ask me (or Matt, or Hannah, or Jean...). Also, the 2009 Constant Reader Awards forum is an archive of all the deliberations, polls, and stats from last time. A good thread to look at is 2009: Final Overall Standings (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?t=7219), which is a table of all the important data collected during the entire 2009 CRA. Another useful thread is 2009: Overview of the Awards (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?p=416580), which is a list of all Constant Reader Awards winners.

Aaron's original How to Vote (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?t=5807) thread from last time is a good sort of FAQ, in case anyone's totally confused about the whole thing.

Yes! Jean's opened up the Appended Categories nomination threads. These Constant Reader Awards are not just about the books themselves, though that's the focus point. We're also deciding on a multitude of other "best" awards (and in some cases "worst"!), just like at the Oscars. So head on over to that sub-forum and check out all the threads! Thank you.

The Directors decided to allow guests to the site to vote in these polls. For these only, guests can see notices and vote for best book.

The reason is because there are plenty of people that view the site but don't sign up (for whatever reason) and it would be great to have their vote. Mostly SKMBer's :D

A little notice for anyone that cares: Some minor inconsistencies were detected in last year's Round 1 scores and I will be going through the Round 1 overview thread (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?t=5965) and updating it. Apologies... It's nothing really major, no books were denied advancement into Round 2. But for fans of "Rage", good news, it goes from 58th to around 46th or so... Like I said, nothing major.

Just a little reminder: Round 2 of our 2010 Constant Reader Awards gets underway on Monday, May 3. For those that didn't participate last year, or just needing a refresher, take a look at Aaron's How to Vote (http://www.thedarktower.org/palaver/showthread.php?t=6740) thread from 2009, which details how voting in Round 2 works better than I could. If there are any questions, please feel free to post them here, not there.

My apologies, guys and gals, but announcing the scores for Group 1 and opening up Group 3 will have to wait till tomorrow. I was at the hospital all day as my mom was having surgery. All is well, and I'll be right back at it tomorrow.

Jean
05-10-2010, 10:18 PM
pablo, I so hope everything went well and your mom will be back home soon!

Thank you, Jean!

Group 1 results have been added to the polls and the overview thread. Group 3 polls are now open, with a one-day delay (they'll run the regular seven days, of course). Group 2 polls are closing tomorrow, please vote if you haven't yet! We're experiencing a sizable decrease in voter turnout, which is quite unfortunate, as this results in potentially incorrect overall scores. The more people vote, the more correct the scores. PLEASE VOTE!

mae
05-12-2010, 03:08 PM
The scores for Group 2 are being delayed a bit, because we've run into the problem I discussed above, where people were making more (or less) than a single vote in each grading area. Since it's a multiple choice poll with ten selectable choices, it's easy to make a mistake. Thus I'd like to reiterate that when you're voting, please check your selections carefully before submitting. If you see that you screwed up (your choices show up in italics) and selected more (or less) than a single choice in each grading area, please let us know so we can fix it.

mae
05-19-2010, 07:45 AM
Well the last group, Group 6, is up for voting! Get to your polling stations :) When it closes, so will our Round 2, and the top ten books will move on to the third and final found!

Bad news, though. As a lot of people have been voting (thank you), there have cropped up some understandable mistakes, as these second round polls are not super straightforward I'm afraid. No real way around that. So I'll be working on weeding out the mis-votes and putting up the final scores as I count them, which can take a few days. So please excuse these delays, but understand I'm trying to get through them as quickly as possible.

mae

The final results for Round 2 have all been posted. The following ten books advance to the the third and final face-off round, which commences on June 7:

1: The Stand - 7.699695122 (96.25%) - 1st in R2
2: The Drawing of the Three - 7.458128079 (93.23%) - 3rd in R2
3: It - 7.441979950 (93.02%) - 2nd in R2
4: The Shining - 7.418167267 (92.73%) - 7th in R2
5: The Green Mile - 7.358091787 (91.98%) - 6th in R2
6: The Waste Lands - 7.354834055 (91.94%) - 4th in R2
7: 'Salem's Lot - 7.345284238 (91.82%) - 8th in R2
8: Different Seasons - 7.324465812 (91.56%) - 10th in R2
9: The Talisman - 7.306523264 (91.33%) - 5th in R2
10: Pet Sematary - 7.258059778 (90.73%) - 14th in R2

Round 3 is a simple process where you'll be given a choice of two books. Given the choice, please vote on which of the two books you would rather re-read (there will be a "never read either or both" option too). Each of the ten finalists will face-off against all the other books in this round. For each victory the winner will receive an additional 0.1 to its Final Average Score.

mae
05-29-2010, 07:36 AM
For the record, last year's finalists looked like this:

1. The Drawing of the Three
2. The Stand
3. It
4. The Waste Lands
5. The Dark Tower
6. The Talisman
7. Different Seasons
8. The Green Mile
9. The Long Walk
10. The Shining

So 'Salem's Lot and Pet Sematary make this year's Finals, and The Dark Tower and The Long Walk are out.
