I thought this would be a good place to post trailers from upcoming films. It could also be a place to post a trailer from our favorite films.

If you're like me, then you love to watch trailers. I'm the kind of person that must be in the movie theater before the trailers start. I hate missing the trailers. To me, they are part of the movie experience.

As somebody who edits video, I've always been fascinated by movie trailers. It's not an easy task to cut a 2 minute trailer from a 2 hour film and make it look exciting and interesting.

A movie trailer is incredibly important. For most people, it's the first time they're learning about a new film. A trailer can literally make or break a film.

The fun thing about trailers is that a really good film might have a bad trailer. On the flip side, a bad movie can have a really awesome trailers. This is something we have come pretty used to nowadays.

A trailer can also ruin a movie by giving away too much of the plot. A perfect example of this is the film What Lies Beneath. The trailer gave away too much of the plot and took away from the twist ending.

Wow, I just realized my love for a good trailer borders on creepy.:orely:

Anyway, I think this movie looks good. It's called Brooklyn's Finest.

Nice thread. i also really love a good trailer. This is maybe my favorite trailer ever, even thought the film is about ten years old.magnolia

And, other movies which are more current.

Magnolia had a great trailer. What a task it must have been to make a trailer out of such a complicating story. In the end, I think they did a great job of giving the viewer a good feel for each character. I also like the line, "and it will all make sense in the end." It basically tells the viewer what they are getting into before they even sit down.

Afterschool looks really interesting. I will have to remember that one. I doubt it will open anywhere around here. I'm also looking forward to Greenburg. I think that role is perfect for Stiller

I read the first three issues. They were pretty great. Over the top bloody action. The movie looks like a pretty faithful adaptation. I'm gonna pick up the trade paperback when I can, which should be out soon cause the first series just wrapped up.

Inception looks like one of the more interesting films of the year. In my opinion, Christopher Nolan has yet to make a bad film, so I have high hopes for Inception.

The trailer I just posted is The Losers. Most comic books fans should be familiar with it. I haven't been reading comic books very long, but The Losers is easily one of my favorites.

There are definitely some similarities between The Losers and the A-Team, but I think The Losers might be the more entertaining film come Summer.

Shit, i NEED to at least start trying to get back in touch with reality, as I had never seen this trailer or even heard of this film before. Looks amazing, though.

The Cloverfield trailer reminds me of the biggest reason I went and saw Cloverfield, and that was to see a trailer to one of my fav tv shows that you couldn't see anywhere else. Cloverfield was fucking brilliant, but it was just seeing my fav show on the big screen, even just for a minute...man, I really do hope they make an actual film one day!

Anyway, to get back on topic, i think this would have to be one of my fav teaser trailers ever:
YouTube- Official Watchmen Trailer

Ok, i know everyone has seen this one a million times, and you can say what you like about the actual film, but it's a classic example of how being ultra simplistic and revealing nothing (which goes double for Dr. Manhattan, naturally) and using a really cool song can leave one hell of a good impression!

Wow, Dracula and dinosaurs:wtf: Never thought of those together, somebody should make a movie where dinosaurs are vampires, and have that somehow be linked to why they became extinct (or maybe not extinct at all, but living among us in hiding, muah-ah-ah). That wouldn't be completely retarded in any way, shape, or form.
I have to see Blood into Wine, that looks like a great documentary, Maynard's awesome, and I love Tim and Eric.
But anyway, I found this Maximum Overdrive trailer that's just hilarious. Not current at all, but this is the most appropriate thread I could find to put it in so Jean won't get after me (just kiddin, Jean;) you do a good job:clap:).

My only worry is that it took Arnold everything he had to defeat just one Predator. How in gods name are a bunch of people (people who look way less badass than the people Arnold was running with) going to defeat armies of Predators?

A couple of weeks ago, I heard about this movie, and it caught my interest. I didn't have a clue what it was about, but it caught my interest.

Now the trailer's been released, and it's gone from just grabbing my interest, to becoming the most anticipated film of the year for me.

YouTube- Scott Pilgrim vs. The World - Official Trailer

I have yet to read the comics, but I will do now. The reason why this film grabbed my interest, though? Edgar Wright. Director of Spaced, Shaun of the Dead, and Hot Fuzz. To say that the trailer for his new film has surprised me is saying a lot. Bloody hell, this film can't come out soon enough!

I have a couple gripes with this:

WHY is everything in fucking 3D now?

I love how Eustace was entirely ignored except for a couple quick shots.

For God's sake, why do they keep bringing back the White Witch? She's only in book one, she's annoying, and all she does is show up for five seconds to proposition a teenage boy, which is pretty disturbing and would never fly if a wizard was propositioning Lucy. I swear if they make Silver Chair and she's in it I'm going to pitch a fit.

Thank you ka-mai. I'm glad I'm not alone! This has really been irritating me lately too. I'm hoping it's just a passing phase. I don't mind a movie here or there in 3D, but do we really need every film released in 3D now? Plus the additional charges to see the movie are ridiculous.

Me too, Heather! One thing I do find promising to hear is that The Walking Dead will only be 6 episodes long for its first series - with the kind of scale the series needs, a high budget over just 6 episodes would look far more impressive than over 20, that's for sure!

Also, Danny Boyle's film looks interesting to watch! I could say that it looks different, but let's be honest - any film by Danny Boyle is automatically going to be different, even by his own past movies! No - especially by his own past movies!

The Walking Dead is an amazing series, Heather. Don't know how big you are on comics, but even if you're not a particularly big comic book nut you'll most likely fall in love with the series.

True that. Have either of you seen The Last Exorcism, though? It's one of those rare types of films where it's actually an excellent character piece and horror movie in its own right, perhaps because there's less "shaky cam" ruining it due to the initial documentary premise. I need to watch that again, actually.

This is basically CBS telling us, in way before the 4 minutes are even finished:

Everything you thought...everything you suspected...everything you FEARED...has come to pass.

Elementary. The way Sherlock should be done: by "fixing" everything the BBC series got "wrong"!

Shannon
05-31-2012, 04:52 PM
Nah, I don't see that from the trailer. Although, I'll pass on this show. Not a fan of either of the leads and althogh I think it is possible to enjoy two different tv shows about the same subject/person, I don't think this one quite has the feel of Sherlock Holmes and John/Joan Watson.

mystima
05-31-2012, 08:19 PM
interesting....(even though I will not be watching this as I haven't seen the BBC version...I have enough police procedural shows in my pocket...lol...)having a female Watson was cool....but that is just me.

DoctorDodge
05-31-2012, 11:52 PM
It could be a cool idea, but there are so many unnecessary changes, including making Watson a "former surgeon" rather than a former Army doctor, and being "Holmes's sober companion", that you can't help but wonder: why? And then of course there's the completely predictable romantic tension...ok, here's the thing, I probably wouldn't have a problem with a show like this if it was just another crime show that's loosely inspired by Holmes like so many are, like The Mentalist, for example, in fact I wouldn't pay any attention to it in the slightest. It's just insulting to everyone's intelligence that what these guys have done is make another crime show, only this time, one that exploits the Holmes name rather than embrace it, clearly using the Holmes mythology in name only.

Like I said, this just seems to be getting wrong what a lot of people feared would be wrong with BBC's Sherlock. Through a miracle (and the writing of Steven Moffat, of course), it somehow avoided being shit and turned into one of the best Holmes adaptations in a very long time while still being a fantastic tv series in its own right. Elementary looks to be as forgettable as not only a bad Holmes adaptation but also a number of crimes shows out there.

Nah, I don't see that from the trailer. Although, I'll pass on this show. Not a fan of either of the leads and althogh I think it is possible to enjoy two different tv shows about the same subject/person, I don't think this one quite has the feel of Sherlock Holmes and John/Joan Watson.

That's exactly it. The Holmes and Watson relationship is a very unique relationship with a unique dynamic, and I'm just not feeling it here.

And mystima: you haven't watched Sherlock yet? Correct that, asap!

DoctorDodge
06-04-2012, 04:16 AM
Ugh. You know, I still can't get over just how obviously it is of being a total ripoff of Sherlock. Not a remake, just a ripoff. It's not that the idea of modernizing Sherlock Holmes is new - the guys who made Sherlock have in fact said the Basil Rathbone movies were what they were inspired by - but as different as CBS is trying to make Elementary by comparison, there's no question where they got their idea of "modernising" Holmes from. Especially when they asked Sherlock co-creator Steven Moffat if they could specifically remake his version first.

Just...no. No. I mean official remakes of great British shows is one thing, people behind the original sold their rights to that. But this...this is just a whole new low. I do not predict great things for this series.

Heather19
06-04-2012, 10:16 AM
But why is it not just another remake? That's what I'd classify it as. Did they actually talk to Steven Moffat? That's really weird. Things like this happen all the time. There's so many instances where 2 very similar films get created at the same time. For example, there's the 2 new Snow White films coming out soon. Plus you also have both Once Upon a Time and Grimm which both premiered this past fall. If you think about it, it's not really surprising also considering that Guy Ritchie released the Sherlock Holmes film a year or so ago as well.

Oh and just to settle your mind a bit, don't worry, I have no intentions of watching it

That's exactly what they did, and he said no. You raise a fair point with those others, but this wasn't something developed coincidentally, like Guy Ritchie's Holmes and Moffat's.. This was seeing how popular the UK series was and trying to copy that success. It's that simple. It could be interesting to watch another interpretation, but after watching the perfection that is the BBC version, neither the writing nor acting looks to be half as good.

fernandito
06-04-2012, 01:28 PM
Eh, don't agree with your statement that a different approach shouldn't be taken just because a great version of that story exists already.

Example : Christopher Nolan's Batman films. Probably the greatest set of live action dark knight tales we'll ever see, right ? Does that mean that other directors shouldn't try their hand at adding to the lore ? Of course not. I will be excited to see what the next director can do with a such a wonderfully complex character. And the director after that. And the director after that. And so forth, and so on.

There are always more tales to tell. Characters as revered as the two in question don't belong to any one group or era.

DoctorDodge
06-04-2012, 01:44 PM
Oh, that's entirely true, feev. But would you want to see another Batman trilogy by another director being made at the same time as Nolan's? Yes, as I pointed out, there is always more tales to tell, but just how likely is it that this version of the series will be as good as what it's been inspired by? I'm not saying another modern version of Holmes is unnecessary - as I said before, Sherlock is not even the first modernisation of the story. I'm just saying that it's unnecessary now.

Shannon
06-04-2012, 02:05 PM

Well I haven't been in that situation, but I wouldn't mind it. Hell, why would I ? More of what I love is always a good thing.

...just how likely is it that this version of the series will be as good as what it's been inspired by?

Don't know, why don't we wait and see first before coming to pre emptive conclusions ? It could go either way. Don't think that the time frame it's being released in has any bearing on it's overall quality.

Well, it's less the time frame and more...Lucy Liu as Watson and the clear UST that's coming off from the trailer. It's coming off as wrong as a love story between Bruce Wayne and Alfred. Bear in mind, I'm only skeptical of it because of how 99% of Americanisations of great British classics have sucked. I'm aware of the exceptions, of course, such as the Office (which had a lot of support from the creators), and Sanford and Son, and...nope, that's about it.

fernandito
06-04-2012, 02:31 PM
Well, let's remain cautiously optimistic it's that 1% , shall we ?

I know I'm doing a bit of cross examination here, but Robin's sex was changed from male to female in The Dark Knight Returns and the change actually enhanced certain aspects of the story.

If this version of Sherlock sucks, I'll gladly hold up a pitchfork along with everyone else. Well maybe not becuase I'll be too lazy. I'll be there with everyone in spirit though. If I'm not stoned.

Glad to hear it. Looking forward to reading your thoughts, anyway.

As for Elementary...I'll try and be a little less skeptical about it. I won't be cautiously optimistic, but I will be cautious, at least. True, it's a ripoff, but it could be a good one. It's not likely in the slightest - say what you like, a female Watson is a way bigger change to the story than to a female Robin, unless Sherlock was a woman as well - but I'll watch an ep or two at least. In the meantime, I've got plenty of the original stories to read. Not to mention the Reichenbach Fall to watch over and over again! :D

I love trailers for movies, but then again I also hate them. There is a line most advertisers cross when giving away too much of the movie; sometimes a 30 second tv spot tells me the entire movie and thus, making it pointless for me to watch. Some trailers leave us with mystery or shock us and make us want to see the movie, others get us intimately involved with the characters or the situation. To me a great trailer entices us with a promise to come, with a gist of the plot and some connection to it. I know there is already a trailer thread for new trailers, but I'd like this thread to be dedicated to great trailers, that go above and beyond what most trailers do.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4kLizDXLY0

I love this trailer because it's stylish and eye catching, we get find ourselves already invested in their relationship and it leaves us hanging with her kidnapping and a small taste of what Cready might do to get her back.

Between the score, the great use of editing and the subject material I was wanting to see this movie immediately.

Some would say the inventor of viral marketing for a movie. By giving us this trailer, the sudden intensity of it, the head of the statue of liberty but really showing you nothing about what is actually happening, nor giving a title to a movie instantly had the internet set ablaze for quite a long time, people dissected the trailer to theorize what it could actually be. No trailer has accomplished what this one has imo.

Hope you don't mind, but I merged the two together. Feel free to post as many trailers old or new as you want. :)

This is hands down, one of the best trailers ever! I was already curious about this film to begin with, but once I saw this I needed to see the film immediately!

I forgot about that one! So, my top three (in no special order) are Cloverfield, The Prestige, Star Trek (2009). Got another one or two new ones for you guys:

Wreck-It Ralph (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COC8W8uLdI8) (Disney)

Saving Hope (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ab4vNphOgak) (TV, NBC - looks to be in the same vein as Grey's Anatomy)

I love the art of a good trailer. If I were to make a movie I would want to be make the trailer myself as well. Advertisers can kill a movie with it's trailers...make the audience think they are getting one type of movie and get something totally different. A glaring example of this was the TV spots for The Matador; 30 seconds of guns and explosions and talks of hitmen etc and people think, 'hey an action movie' when, if you've seen it, is anything but - people would probably dislike a movie as it is not what they wanted to watch, and I feel this happens a lot.

I agree. Depending on how you cut it and put it together you can make it feel like various types of films. Scary Poppins...
And most of the time I feel they give away too much.

Just remembered this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbHtkHqpknk

Hmmm. What do I think? Well, I'm a bit of a fan of the tv series, (yes, this is based on a show), and...honestly, I don't think this film will work out quite as well, judging from the trailer. One thing I loved about the tv show is that it had this 70s charm, this police brutality to it that was just fun to watch. It's one of the reasons why I loved Life on Mars so much: not only did it kind of act as a spiritual successor to the Sweeney in some aspects, taking place in a 70s world, it also had the twist of seeing it through a modern day copper's eyes. Without that 70s charm...I'm really not sure this could work, even with Ray Winstone and Plan B, who was pretty solid in Harry Brown. Will I give it a watch? Maybe. Most likely with dad. Tenner says we're both complaining afterwards, though.

Fingers crossed the trailer for Dredd looks a lot better!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyywumlnhdw

I am PSYCHED to see this! Of course, I wish they were able to get Robert Downey Jr. like they originally planned, but I can deal. The reason I'm psyched: it's not a remake. Like Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, this is another part of the more famous story... and like Alice, this shows more promise than the cartoonish versions. Children's stories are often scarier than some of the things King writes, but we don't realize it. Adaptations of the original stories cover the vein of freight throughout the body of the story with a heavy dose of colorful makeup. As adults, the aspects of the stories that prevented us from sleeping as children now seem silly. Flying monkeys, a field of flowers that make you sleep forever, a wicked witch... laughable and safe.

My grandmother had a rule about movies. If it was based on a book, I had to read it first. This held true from the moment I was born. Before I would watch the Wizard of Oz, my grandmother read me every Oz book in the series. When it was time to see the movie, I was excited and scared. Excited, because I loved the story and the characters and I wanted to go on that adventure again. Scared, because that shit was fucked up. Forget about how terrifying the idea of the wicked witch is... the BEGINNING of the story set the scene for me. This is a little girl with no parents, she has to live on a farm with her aunt and uncle. She loves her dog, but a mean old lady wants to take him away and kill him. A tornado is coming and she can't get to the shelter in time. Now we know the story has a happy ending, so we don't freak out about that stuff. But as a kid, hearing the story for the first time, landing in Oz didn't even seem safe. Sure, it was beautiful and magical, but put yourself in Dorothy's shoes (right before she switches them). Where the fuck are you? Who are these tiny people? There was an underlying fear throughout the entire book for me. And when I saw the movie... as much as I loved it... I was disappointed. Just like when I saw Cinderella and no one had their foot cut, when I saw Snow White and no pig was slaughtered, when I saw Sleeping Beauty and everyone woke up at the end... I felt cheated, but I also felt proud to know the "real" story that none of the other kids did.

When I saw this trailer, I thought, "Please let the monkeys talk!" The scariest fucking thing in the world is knowing that those winged monkeys are not evil animal hybrids created by the wicked witch, but a race of intelligent creatures that was once free and has been enslaved by the witch to commit terrible acts. AND they can speak. Knowing they are NOT evil made me even more frightened of them, because it made me think... normal people do terrible things when they have to do whatever an evil person tells them to.

Anyway. I'm rambling... I'm just stoked to see this movie. And it makes me extra excited to have a kid someday so they can experience all these great and powerful stories for the first time.

Lizzie Borden was okay. Especially for a Lifetime film. I wasn't blown away, but nothing else was on and it filled the time nicely. Ricci was pretty good. The film's biggest problem was the overuse of the same shots. They showed the same blood splatter and axe being wielded like 20 times. Could they have shot some more B-role for god's sake?

This is one I'm pretty excited about.

http://youtu.be/KjiCQgiM7-I

It's from the makers of practical and animatronic effects of a number of horror films, including The Thing prequel. "What practical effects?" you ask? Yep, that was the question I asked myself when I saw it - hearing that it wasn't going to be so CGI focused was the one thing that got me excited before seeing nothing but CGI throughout the film. Then I found out that practical effects had been made, but had all been virtually replaced by CGI in the finished film. Hearing that the guys behind those original practical effects were pissed off enough to start working on an independent film of their own has really got my hopes up. The story doesn't look very original, but if the effects and the make-up is great and echoes the great horrors of the 80s when they really knew how to be nasty, then I'm certainly more keen to see this than a lot of Hollywood horror being released these days. :)
